Beet & Pistachio Salad

Came for lunch. The Colgate Inn Tavern once was very good. Haven't been here in years, but decided to give it a try since there are limited dining choices in Hamilton, NY. My friend and I started with the soup of the day, loaded potato soup. Arrived luke warm after a 20 minute wait. Decided not to send it back to reheat, because we had already waited 20 minutes! If it had been HOT, it would have been really tasty, if it had been hot. We also ordered the endive and golden beet salad, which showed up 15 minutes after the soup. Fortunately it was supposed to be served cold and was delicious. See photo

When not familiar with food establishments in a town, I always seek a place with a 4+ rating in Yelp, and have never been disappointed! That includes this place! Oh my! The soup of the day for lunch was French Onion, and I think it was the best I've ever had! Definitely top 3. The turkey panini was excellent also. And the chocolate chip cookie skillet dessert was just the right size - and fantastic! I will be back here! My server was Shannon, and she was also fantastic- attentive, and served the food with perfect timing - I wasn't rushed to finish any part of my meal, and the next item was served upon completion of the former. I can't wait to return!

Maple glazed salmon (so good!), delish house cut fries with garlic aoli, and scallops and risotto in the back

Limited menu but very well executed. The best poutine I've ever had! Absolutely delicious food and friendly service.

My daughter and I had an early dinner here on a summer afternoon. Beautiful view of the golf…read morecourse, and past the course to the Colgate campus. Since the parking lot is also used for the golf course, the lot was jammed and we needed to wait a few minutes for someone to leave. The menu was pretty good, but I didn't see anything that jumped out and grabbed me. Our wait staff suggested the Shrimp Po' Boy or Crab Cake Sandwich. I chose the Crab Cake, which was good, but maybe not great. The spicy fries were good. She did suggest it would be a littler more filling than the Shrimp Po' Boy. Daughter had a cheeseburger and fries, which appeared to be just like any other burger and fries. Great location and view were the best attributes for us that night, but we didn't get to try the dinner menu or drinks.

Seating affords a nice view of the course, so we were able to watch them teeing off, with a view of the University in the background. Good wine and draft beer list. Deputy Yelper raved about the Santa Fe chicken ("would order it again in a heart beat"). The veggie burger (black bean) was nicely dressed with aioli, LTO. Not too dry, which is often a problem with these things. Definitely should be on your list if looking for a good meal in Hamilton.

They serve up standard breakfast fare including eggs, pancakes, French toast, Belgian waffles, breakfast sandwiches, breakfast burritos, omelets, breakfast sides, and US Foods coffee. For lunch, they serve up sandwich platters, burgers, wraps, soup, salads, chicken tenders, hand cut fries, sweet potato fries, fried cheese curds, desserts (pies, ice cream, strawberry shortcake, cookies), and Pepsifountain drinks. They also post daily specials. The place is pretty casual with stained glass overhanging lighting, table seating and stools up at the lunch counter. I stopped by here for a lunch break recently on my way out to Syracuse. The place was fairly busy just before 1pm. I got an ice water and decided on a posted special, which was the Country, Fried Chicken ($15.99 plus tax) served with mashed potatoes and veg of day. My entrée was served in 18 minutes after ordering. The portion of food was just right. The breaded cutlet smothered in a thick cream gravy was thick and actually a medium rare beefsteak inside. I was going a steak knife too. The homemade chunky mashed potatoes were also smothered in a thick cream gravy. The veg of day was cream of spinach. I finished my plate of food and requested the check shortly afterwards. The check was $17.27 with tax and before tip. Overall, I enjoyed good comfort food in a busy local restaurant. The service was hectic as the place was quite busy and the staff was working together to get things done before they closed up for the day at 2pm.

Sat at the bar as I was alone but there were tables inside and picnic tables outside for a variety of seating options. I was offered water immediately with my menu. I sampled the Berry Sour Seltzer which tasted great. Not too fruity and too bitter. I ordered a glass. The food offerings were limited to one side of the menu, half being appetizers and half being meals. I was a bit surprised by the cost of the Elk Burger ($29) but made that my choice as I wanted more than an appetizer but good comfort food. It came with smoked gouda, lettuce, tomato, onion and mayo on a thick yet soft bun. Salad greens coated with balsamic dressing accompanied the burger (fries were available for an up charge). One bite told me I'd made the correct choice and the price was worth it. The burger (ordered medium well) was hot and juicy and the bun did a great job of balancing that without falling apart or getting soggy. The Gouda cheese had such great flavor and it was in the perfect state of warm but not melt-coated into the burger. My water was consistently refilled and I sat there and enjoyed every bite of that burger and salad while I drank my Seltzer.

The menu is a mix of a chophouse with a large selection of chef selections from paella, pasta and schnitzel. The chef is a CIA graduate which is surprising to find in Central NY. The food was fresh and i noted that the chef makes his own bread, dressing, aioli's and desserts. It's clear the chef puts care into his work. We ordered - house salad - solid salad with house dressing. nice, nothing crazy - onion soup, this was excellent. really well done, from the croutons, cheese and flavor. wow - calamari - the only thing we didnt love - chicken schnitzle - excellent, authentic - scallops - fresh, perfectly cooked. a bit too sauced, but great - creamy garlic and spinach pasta - our kids didnt love, but decent The desserts were great as well. The restaurant was very accommodating to our casual attire and 3 young kids. Amazingly kind. The entire experience is a bit like going back in time, the historic nature of the setting is hard to explain, but you really feel it.
