While in Vancouver, one of my favorite breakfast haunts is this little diner in Downtown known as THE TEMPLETON. Opened in 1996, the Templeton boasts a wide range of falvors to enjoy and while it's open all for dinner as well, to me, breakfast is where the Templeton shines. I've been a fan of their morning nosh for years but my favorites tend to lean towards the TRUCKERS BREAKFAST (3 eggs any style, turkey sausage or bacon or veggie bacon, rosemary potatoes and toast), BIG ASS BREAKFAST (3 eggs any style, french toast or pancakes, turkey sausage or bacon or veggie bacon, side rosemary potatoes and toast), FARMERS BREAKFAST (rosemary potatoes sautéed with veggies, melted aged white cheddar, two eggs any style, fresh salsa and sour cream), MANGLED EGGS (real or veggie bacon, 3 eggs scrambled, Montreal brie inside a toasted croissant, side rosemary potatoes) and the CINNAMON RAISIN FRENCH TOAST (a classic). Prices are reasonable and when you ask for a mug of coffee, you get a big mug of coffee and better yet, their coffee is great! Located in the somewhat sketchy yet getting cleaned up section of Granville Street, THE TEMPLETON is a blink-and-you'll-miss-it slice of heaven. The food is fantastic, the staff is friendly and the prices cant be beat. It is always busy so be prepared to wait for a few minutes and I do not suggest coming with more than 4 people as it is a small place and the odds of you all sitting together are slim to none. That shouldn't stop you though because with good breakfast nosh like this, the last thing you will be doing is talking to your friends with your mouth full! read more

A bunch of us decided to grab some poutine before the Bella Gelateria tweetup. It was the first non-breakfast I've had there. Our waitress was a bit surly to us before warming up when she heard Dennis had downed a massive two-pound burger at Yew. The poutine, which most of us ordered, comes with aged white cheddar, topped with vegan mushroom gravy. It was good and very filling. The fries were crisp and the plate ample. I prefer the darker meat gravy, but this vegetarian alternative was fine. May strayed from us and got the chili fries. They were good and hearty on another massive plate. It was a stopover that certainly quelled our hunger pangs. read more

This is one of my favorite diners in Vancouver. It is a small place. It can get pretty full. I pretty much always get the 777 Burger or the BBB Burger. The 777 is a straightforward burger. It has quality beef, fresh condiments, and is served on a nice Kaiser. When I am looking for a bit more, I would go for the BBB. It adds BBQ sauce and bacon. Their fries are pretty good. They are fresh cut. They also carry Jones sodas and have pretty good shakes. The service is usually friendly. I've been there a couple of times though when it was rushed and a little brusk. Overall though, it is a great small throwback diner. It is an icon on Granville St. read more

I always looked askance at this place because it's kind of in a seedy part of Granville, right next to a cheesy looking sex shop, and I assumed it was just some hole-in-the-wall dive bar. Well now I know how wrong I've been, and I regret not giving this little gem a chance sooner. I arrived with the girls for Friday brunch. We had to wait about 20/30 minutes for a table but there was a little waiting area and one of the servers gave us frequent check ins on our wait time - she was funny too! The place is dim even in the daytime, which helps hide the grungier parts of the retro style diner. The table are adorable - sunflower vinyl cover and vintage-y postcards under the glass, there are individual jukeboxes on the table for 25cent play - I wonder if they work and how loud it would play?! You have a good view of the bar from most seats, and can watch the servers bustling about keeping everything clean and tidy - the staff really does an excellent job! The food is great too - the prices are generally quite reasonable and the portions are generous. The only thing is that some lunch/brunch items are in the 12-15$ range, which is a bit pricey when you compare Twisted Fork just down the block serving up fancier things for 13.50 tax included. But, the food here IS good - its simple but not boring - I had the farmer's breakfast - great potatoes, nice sautéed veggies. It comes with salsa and sour cream and the salsa was rather weak, more in the style of a pico, but heavy on tomatoes. My friends both got the Mangled Eggs - scrambled eggs with Brie in a croissant, and potatoes on the side - it looks great, tastes great, and it's a really big meal for your buck (but also very rich!). I'm definitely going to come back and try more dishes, as well as check out their 10$ beer jug days on Tues and Thurs. read more

Very retro with the 70's bar stools and jukebox. Food is great and my other friends were raving on about how good the milkshakes were here. The place was busy on a weekend and we had to wait for about 30mins. However as soon as we were seated, our waitress who looked like she had a hang over came up to take our orders but told us that she won't make us any milkshakes as she was too busy. The 3 of us had the very standard eggs with toast with other bits and pieces and I ordered the side of chilli. It was pretty average and to be honest can probably find better breakfast elsewhere if I looked hard enough. read more

Can't get enough of this place. On Monday nights, they show a movie on their giant screen, which felt a little out of place (going with the old-school diner vibe), until we asked. They have a huge menu. Definitely veggie-friendly. And not just one or two items, but many. I had the mangled eggs -- 3 scrambled, with brie. The eggs are completely overflowing and the croissant is warm, so this was a fork and knife endeavor. The potatoes seemed like any other potatoes, but the rosemary made it more exciting. I had a bite of my friend's baked grapefruit, which was topped with brown sugar and pecans. Yummy, and something I'll make at home! The brown sugar tones down the sourness of the grapes. Love the decor, obviously. All the tables have their own jukebox, and there's vintage postcards to look at while waiting for your food. read more

Any time I'm in town, I'll stop by there for brunch... at least once but maybe twice. Food may not be a full 5 just because it's a "regular" American brunch and they don't use any fantasy on making it special. Although, it's a very good one! Delicious. I came here the morning after an epic dance party and ordered the raisin french toast, poached eggs, and fruit. I think this is the first time I'd ever had raisins in my french toast. The egg was farm-raised from happy chickens, so the yolk was orange and not a pale yellow -- something I noticed and thought was cool. I wholeheartedly enjoyed my food. I mostly wanted to write this review, not because of the food, but because of the waitress who helped us. What do you get when you mix old diner appeal with home made, classic veg food? Guy Feiri. Just kidding. I've only been here for dinner and it's definitely a repeat offender! I love the food and the cheap beer which is not a standard for Granville St. Located beside an xxx shop, with every day changing funny quote signs, The Templeton is a classic. Lets see, I've had the portobello mushroom burger with a thin layer of cheese crust around it (just melt in your mouth amazing!!), the Med Quesadilla (simple but fresh and delicious), but what sends me back over again is the Vegan Lentil Loaf. They really nailed that one! The garlic mashed potatoes and the mushroom gravy mixed with the loaf is superb. You could put that on a flip flop any day!! Good job Templeton! read more

This is a great spot for breakfast in the heart of Vancouver. I went with the Mangled Eggs which exhibited the French influence that is apparent in the city (in my opinion). It was basically some eggs and bacon in a croissant. I mean, I am sure you can get this somewhere in the US (where I am from), but I'd like think that it was a better experience since I'm across the northern US border. I liked the whole old-fashioned diner feel. The service was mediocre at best--the workers didn't look too happy. There were a couple hostels on the same street so I imagine lots of other foreigners drop by this joint too. Note: If it's your first breakfast meal in Vancouver, I'd actually recommend going to the Twisted Fork instead which is just a few-minute walk away because I think it's more of a "Canadian feel" (serving novel things to Americans). read more

Cute hole-in-the-wall diner with a table-side jukebox belting out some classic oldies -- what bettter way to enjoy your eggs? Do get here kind of early cause it's a tiny restaurant with maybe 6-7 tables and some bar seating.. and when we went around 10 am on a Friday morning, every seat was occupied. No worries though -- we got seated in less than 10 minutes. I got the truckers breakfast (3 eggs cooked any way, rosemary potatoes, toast, and homemade breakfast sausage). The star of the meal? A tie between the rosemary potatoes and the breakfast sausages! My mom got the Hakai omelet (red onions, smoked salmon, and cream cheese) and twas delicious! I only had a few bites and I would imagine that a whole plate may be kind of overwhelming -- unless, of course, you enjoy cream cheese, in which case, you'll find the Hakai omelet to be just perfect! They had a "people love us on Yelp" sticker on their door, and wow, do they mean it. So many reviews! The baked grapefruit on the breakfast menu looked intriguing, but, alas, I was there for dinner. The three-cheese macaroni was not what I had hoped. But then, it was probably my fault for being used to bechamel. I got a free Italian Cream Soda with my Travellers Deck card (I forgot to get the card back to use the other side, but oh well, it's almost expired). It was fresh for me to see them mix Italian syrup and soda (which I've seen before), then add cream into it from a milk dispenser with the heavy silver ball on the handle. With the cream in addition to the soda, I wish there was a bit more flavour. Cool authentic old diner complete with a big jukebox and individual booth jukeboxes. Round stools line the counter and they have old fashioned milkshake machine - all my favourite features in a diner. The bf and I had breakfast. I had a 3 egg breakfast which came with 4! pieces of perfectly cooked bacon, rosemary potatoes and sourdough toast. My boyfriend had eggs benny and a fruit salad. The portion sizes were great, we left with full bellies and not a big dent in our pocketbooks. Now here's a no frills bang-for-your-buck staple of the Granville strip that never ceases to amaze me. It's consistently the best deal around, but not usually crowded, so I've always managed to walked right in. The specials board changes often, and right now I'm craving the chocolate sundae, with its ample supply of peanuts. Cheap and delicious. A friend of mine texted me this morning asking me what I was doing this morning. I said I had no plans so he offered to come downtown so that we could have breakfast and do some pre-Black Friday shopping! My first choice was to try the Twisted Fork on Granville. It was around 11 am so I thought it won't be busy. I was wrong! It was super busy at the Twisted Fork! The line up was pretty much out the door. My friend and I are not waiters so we headed down the street and ran into the Templeton. I like the Templeton. It's got the look and feel of an old time diner. Too bad I didn't take some interior pictures! Anyways, the Templeton wasn't too busy. My friend and I sat at the counter on bar stools. We both ended up ordering the Trucker's breakfast... 3 eggs, 2 turkey sausages, hash browns and toast. Overall, thumbs up! I have to admit it would be difficult to screw up breakfast! Hahaha! The only slight negative comment I have is that there was only 1 waitress for the whole restaurant. She was pretty much hopping all day long! It has an unfaltering authentic Vancouver vibe with great rock n rock highlighting every visit, a compelling history, unwaveringly tasty dishes, affordable prices and down to earth sharp and witty service. EDIT: This was a 2 star review, but now that I've found out that the owners are flagging other non-elite negative reviews of their horribly run restaurant, I have to go one star. Yelp needs to go through the not-recommended reviews and clear some of those 1-2 star reviews, which are clearly legit. Meanwhile, knowing this badly run restaurant is run by horrible people, I can comfortably recommend you avoid it entirely. Eat brunch ANYWHERE else. ------ For varying reasons I honed in on this place for a weekend brunch. I got there on a Saturday shortly after they opened at 9am, and a few people were already seated. The lone waitress was somewhat passive aggressively rude towards me throughout my visit, and made it a point once I was ready to tell me that she would serve me last, even though others who entered before me were still thinking about what to order while I was clearly ready to order. The wait wasn't too terribly long once she got around to me, but after being treated like that even the best meal ever wasn't going to salvage this visit. Alas, the Trucker Breakfast was alright and the only reason I didn't just drop a 1 star rating on this hipper than thou dive. The hipster attitude from service staff is so 1998, guys. The days of this sort of attitude being anything other than snotty bullshit best left to hip baristas are long gone. If you wouldn't treat someone you love like that, you shouldn't treat a guest like that. I could understand if I had given her a hard time, but I minded my own business and was polite. There was no justifiable reason for her to act like that. I understand hating a job or having to work a crappy opening brunch shift by yourself. It honestly wasn't that crowded and by server standards it was an easily manageable crowd even given that some people showed up after me. If this waitress doesn't like her job, she should just find another job. Even if The Templeton's management is treating her badly she can probably find a dozen other joints that'll give her hours and treat her better. She should not go looking for targets to passive aggressively take out her unhappiness with having to open a Saturday shift. read more

Great burger and Ceasar salad. I ordered the BBB Burger (organic beef, cheddar cheese, bacon and BBQ sauce) with a side of Caesar salad (and free range chicken) and it was delicious. The bun was perfect, the meat nicely cooked, fresh vegetables. The side was big and with that meal I was stuffed. Also another good point the happy hour from 4 to 7pm with tap beers at 3.5$. I should have flushed my cash down the toilet. I normally regret having to give even 1 star but it's ok as the server was so sweet and worked her butt off. Like seriously none of the food had any flavor. The pancake was undercooked and just a weird mushy yet tough texture. Yuck! The toast was dry and stale. I asked for water and realized it was unfiltered and had a bad taste. I asked for a straw, she grabbed it from a random place and stuck it in my glass uncovered. This girl did everything from handling money, to bussing tables, to serving everyone, making every drink and making the toast. Cleaning and wiping behind the counter, managing tickets, writing down orders etc....NEVER washing her hands. Yes she was handling money, ink pens, dirty items behind the counter, grabbing random straws and preparing toast with the same filthy hands. I know the place is small but the girl needed help. This contributed to the delayed and slow service as well. I was forced to buy orange juice just to wash this stuff down. It was gross. Maybe this place is best for hungover peeps on a weekend night, but not for someone wanting a tasty or sanitary breakfast. read more

It was our last day in Vancouver and we wanted breakfast to fill our stomachs after our bike ride around Stanley Park. After perusing through Yelp, we decided to check out Templeton after the raving reviews. I must admit, it did take a while for the food to come out. But don't worry - our server was entertaining to watch the entire time. She's literally the jill of all trades. Aside from the people in the kitchen, she looked after the entire restaurant on her own: she made several pots of coffee, buttered and toasted slices of bread (fyi- all orders come with 2 slices of bread), fill everyone's water, continue to take people's orders, cash people out, all while having a great attitude. I wish I got her name. Anyway, the food was good. Not amazing, but hit the spot on my breakfast craving. If you don't mind waiting 10-15 minutes, and just want a good mom & pop shop for eggs, bacon and toast, then I recommend checking this place out! read more

What is it about that grilled cheese sandwich?!?! Is it the bread? The butter? The open face? The perfectly sliced onions? Is it the gruyere?! I've yet to have a better sandwich out of my mom's kitchen. We arrived at 6:50pm with hopes of making a 7:30 movie at Scotiabank on Burrard. The speedy kitchen and friendly but no-nonsense server took care of business: got us in, fed, and out like the quick diner style we were hoping for! Wonder Woman table, vanilla cola, and tunes rocking from the jukes sealed the deal for a great experience, but the bit of dark chocolate as a parting gift was the true key to my heart. It is our favourite spot because the diner-like atmosphere is great, the food is awesome, and Danielle (the server during the week) is super personable. It is a smaller space so sometimes you do have to wait for a table but it is well worth it! Came here when our first breakfast choice had a three hour wait. We put our names in and hung by the cool open window area in the front. Sat within 30 minutes which seemed fast compared to all the other breakfast place wait times on a busy Saturday. Lots of choices, like LOTS! We enjoyed the mimosas and split one of the bigger breakfast choices which was perfect for two not but breakfast eaters. Five stars on the "diner scale ". Not fancy, but a really good place for breakfast. The pancake and the salmon omelette were both really good, the rosemary potatoes were great (if you like them super crispy, which I do). They grind their coffee beans, and the coffee is definitely significantly better than the typical diner brown swill.
