This is bigger than a hole in the wall but not by much. There are six booths available that comfortably fit four people each. we waited for a brief few minutes before we were able to sit down. The service was friendly and accommodating. The food was fresh and homemade. The coconut chicken strips were some of the best I've ever had. The tomato soup (soup of the day) was fresh tastingly good. My gf ordered the breakfast...the bacon is a little extra smokey, eggs done nicely, potatoes a little bland. This place is a classic old school diner. It's a small restaurant with tables that can seat up to 4 and a long row if stools at the counter. We got there right when they opened at 8:30am with nobody inside. Within the first 15 minutes of being open (on a weekday) the entire place was full. I thought the one server that was working would get overwhelmed, but she was awesome. Attentive and friendly service makes a great dining experience and the food was really good too. We had the eggs Benedict and the big ass breakfast, oh and the soup of the day was borscht - so my Polish husband had to get a cup even in the morning. It was all awesome. We were staying close by and looking for vegan options. This place showed up on every list that we found so we figured we better check it out! It's a super cute diner place. It certainly does fill up fast and we saw lineups for most of the weekend. Sadly the food was just okay. What a beautiful relic! I've been coming to the Templeton for years, and I'm such a fan of its completely relaxed atmosphere. My last visit was after Happy Hour down the street, and we had a hunger brewing! I would love to tell you everything I ate, but honestly I have no idea... All I remember is being swallowed into a vat of garlic mashed potatoes, and I have no regrets! The beer is good, the food is great, and the service is always swift and helpful - and hella laid back! Don't expect peppy, prissy servers in tight clothes trying to get more tips - these are super chill folks who are happy to help and always have suggestions, but they treat you like you're a regular, not like you're a god, and I LOVE IT! I ordered the Trucker's Breakfast, which comes with 3 eggs, rosemary potatoes, 3 slices of veggie bacon, and choice of toast (I got sourdough). Everything was delicious. I liked that there was peanut butter and jelly flavors on the table, and that the menus stayed on the table. What a novel idea! Our waitress was super competent and running the small cafe. First Impression: Visited on a Sunday, breakfast. Let me preface by saying that I constantly go to diners and I love breakfast food. The place was full except for some seats at the "bar" Service: Pleasant. We were offered some seats at the "bar" immediately and then a booth opened up so we were immediately moved there. The server was there and definitely present, asking us if everything was okay and on top of everything. Atmosphere: This place is like walking into a time machine (disregarding waitresses who look like quite hip and modern people). Nearly everything has been left how it would have been in the 50s/60s. Gives it a lot of character and allows for some leeway with minor nuances, like the short stools at the "bar". Music was playing, nothing to note other than it was not overwhelming, nice calm breakfast vibes. Feels like your typical diner, and it is obviously popular as people were waiting for booths throughout the time we were eating. Food: I had the "Big Ass Breakfast" (3 eggs, turkey sausage or bacon or veggie bacon, cinnamon raisin french toast or blueberry banana pancakes, rosemary potatoes and toast) I went with the veggie bacon, french toast and some sourdough toast. Veggie bacon, something I have never had, I'm indifferent, it's like a veggie hot dog, not the real thing but it's okay and I can eat it. I do not like raisins, I still devoured the french toast like no other, very nice. Perfect sunny-side up eggs, complimented by the potatoes. Last but not least, the toast, buttered to perfection, it came pre-buttered which I thought was awesome (they have peanut butter and jam as well). I like a lot of food, I hate leaving somewhere still hungry for more food, this was the perfect amount for me. I didn't feel I needed to take a nap nor eat any more. Drinks: Ordered Oso Negro (locally roasted in BC) fair trade coffee, it was pretty good coffee. Also, a free refill! How nice. I noticed they also serve beer, although I wasn't in the mood for an early beezy. Restrooms: I didn't really have to go, so I didn't use it. No comment there. Overall: Great breakfast, seems to get busy, luckily we came a little earlier for a Sunday (around 9:45am). The waitress was attentive but definitely had attitude. A small family walked in behind us and asked for water for their two young children immediately after they were seated. The server didn't give them water until she took our drink order because she explained we were first in line for service. We told her we didn't mind if she served them water first but that didn't go over well with her...I hope the next time I go to this restaurant there's a different server working. Cool setting with original furniture from the 1950's, and random comics at the various tables to prove it: We got to look at the life of Wonder Woman (and what a hot number she was). Matt got the Mangled Eggs, which was comprised of eggs with Brie cheese on a croissant, with Canadian bacon (veggie or the real deal). I, however, opted for the Tofu Scramble and it had a nice touch of curry to it. The rosemary potatoes were outstanding (though I have to say I prefer American ketchup so I did not obtain as many sugary calories as I would've had I been in the U.S... Guess that is a good thing?!). The multi-grain bread had the perfect amount of butter on it and was delectable. To conclude our chosen food groups, Matt's sandwich was not the only thing getting mangled: we split a Baked Grapefruit with brown sugar and pecans and devoured it. Overall, really great spot. The service was a bit slow but friendly. I ordered a Mangled Eggs ($11) mostly because I don't remember ever seeing croissants on a diner menu before. It was basically a croissant sandwich with scrambled eggs, thick bacon, and brie (also when have I ever seen brie in a diner?). It was served with a side of rosemary potatoes. It was extremely satisfying to eat in the cold rainy weather, enough so that my friend and I split a chocolate hazelnut milkshake (I believe in eating ice cream and ice cream related foods in all weather). They were kind enough to split it for us into two glasses, which was good for me because I was with someone who has a history of hogging desserts/sweets. The customers were mostly hip, tattooed, slightly grungy-looking people in their 20s and 30s with edgy hairstyles. I felt too clean-skinned and boring-haired, but that's OK with me. Came here for brunch over the weekend around 1pm and they were packed. It was about a 20 minute wait for 2 people. Menus are available on top of the jukeboxe in the booths s for quick access and service is friendly. It took a while for our food to arrive. We shared the smoked salmon eggs Benny and the vegetarian lasagna. The winner was the vegetarian lasagna although I was expecting the portion to be a bit bigger considering the price. It came out piping hot, loaded with feta cheese, and great flavour. It came with a nice little side spring mix salad with vinaigrette dressing. The smoked salmon eggs Benny was ok - the eggs were perfectly poached (lots of runny, ooey yolk - yum!). The hollandaise's consistency was nice (not too thick) but needed seasoning. The side of potatoes were a bit stale. The décor is 60's diner-style with personal jukeboxes at each booth. I'm not sure if they actually function though because we put a quarter in and selected a song but I don't think our song ever came on! Food is average and portions could be a little bit more considerate for the price. I'm guessing it's so busy here due to the popular Granville location. I'm not sure what happened to my first review of The Templeton but I think it was user error. :( so this will be shorter and not quite as fun as my previous review. I liked the ambiance of The Templeton despite my distaste for diners. Perhaps I've been to one too many bad diners with the oily heavy greasy frozen food. Normally it's just good for a cheap bite. But the Templeton far exceeded my expectations of a diner. The inside most certainly looked like a diner but was clean and spotless unlike the sticky rundown places I've been to on my travels in the North East, including NYC. The lone waitress was friendly and considerate. She gave us the entire carton when we asked for soy milk and when a booth opened up (all were full when we walked in so we sat at the bar) she offered us the option to move there. Much more comfortable by the way. The food was fresh & you could taste the good quality of the ingredients. The breakfast menu was impressive with the Tofu Scrambler. Very vegetarian friendly. I had the Farmers Breakfast with eggs over medium. The eggs tasted free range and very fresh. The rosemary potatoes were perfectly seasoned. The salsa was definitely fresh & complimented the entire dish well. The toast I ordered on the side was yummy. It was a huge portion but I think I did pretty well. He had the Mangled Eggs w/ veggie bacon. Oh my that croissant was fresh. He loved it. He also ordered french toast on the side. I'm a french toast snob so I thought it was great for diner french toast but not the best french toast I've had. We were stuffed by the end of our meal. I've been to Twisted Fork and personally don't like people comparing the two. You don't compare a self-proclaimed diner with a place like Twisted Fork. While in Vancouver, one of my favorite breakfast haunts is this little diner in Downtown known as THE TEMPLETON. Opened in 1996, the Templeton boasts a wide range of falvors to enjoy and while it's open all for dinner as well, to me, breakfast is where the Templeton shines. I've been a fan of their morning nosh for years but my favorites tend to lean towards the TRUCKERS BREAKFAST (3 eggs any style, turkey sausage or bacon or veggie bacon, rosemary potatoes and toast), BIG ASS BREAKFAST (3 eggs any style, french toast or pancakes, turkey sausage or bacon or veggie bacon, side rosemary potatoes and toast), FARMERS BREAKFAST (rosemary potatoes sautéed with veggies, melted aged white cheddar, two eggs any style, fresh salsa and sour cream), MANGLED EGGS (real or veggie bacon, 3 eggs scrambled, Montreal brie inside a toasted croissant, side rosemary potatoes) and the CINNAMON RAISIN FRENCH TOAST (a classic). Prices are reasonable and when you ask for a mug of coffee, you get a big mug of coffee and better yet, their coffee is great! Located in the somewhat sketchy yet getting cleaned up section of Granville Street, THE TEMPLETON is a blink-and-you'll-miss-it slice of heaven. The food is fantastic, the staff is friendly and the prices cant be beat.
