Wow! What a gem! The atmosphere is laid back with great music. The owner is super friendly and knowledgeable. There is something for everyone here. This is a true thrift shop. She has high end vintage pieces as well as regular treasures, all very fairly priced. I found three great items, included a super cool coat, and walked out under $40. Three attempts to go here. One was successful. A bit over priced. The place posts ads on Craigslist of times and some sale yet when you venture into downtown Petaluma find parking and walk to the store front you are greeted with a locked door, closed sign and a hand written note about sometimes we are open Mondays, sometimes it's 11 sometimes it's noon. How in the world can a business stay in business with this horrible work ethic? You call the number on the sign and it rings and goes to voicemail. Send a text that doesn't get a response. Decided to walk the four blocks away and got my thrift on happily. I guess I will call before attempting to go in again because it's such a let down to make the trip for nothing. Vast collection of used vinyl, spanning many genres, but there's so much more. They also have household items, Jewelry, clothes, toys, cds, dvds, cassettes, collectibles, shoes, vintage audio gear, clothes, new collectible posters, stickers, back patches, and more. I saw a Mickey Mouse bank that was exactly like the one I used to own, and other items like cornflower blue Corningware that my parents have. We walked over from a late lunch at Zazzle's around the corner, and I was too full to bend over and look at all of the records (I'm not exaggerating, they have a ton). Btw, their apricot chicken wrap with cole slaw at Zazzle's is to die for. I highly recommend it. However, I spotted Night Ranger's debut album, "Dawn Patrol", and I had to have it. I got it for steal, at 5 dollars. Go visit these guys! I believe they're open only on the weekends right now. It's like your parents garage, but much cooler, with stuff that you'll actually want. Even though he lost his former downstairs nook he still has room for furniture (for sale)...you just have to look carefully because the pieces are integrated into various displays. This place is a MASSIVE rip off. There's nothing "thrifty" about the prices they charge here. I went in with my mom and she asked about the cost of an album they had for sale. They told her $60 and she almost bought it until I looked it up on ebay and found the same album for $23, still shrink wrapped and unused, and an autographed copy of the album for sale for $50. I'd highly recommend checking ebay before buying anything here or you'll definitely overpay. read more

I inquired about a shirt on the wall and the woman working there said it was $250 which is out of my price range, so she directed me to a rack of shirts that she said were around $10 each. So I find a shirt on the rack priced at $14 and take it up to pay. But apparently it was actually not supposed to be labeled as $14 and was one of the more expensive shirts that had been misplaced she said?? The store is really chaotic and unorganized and pricing seems really odd and inconsistent. Don't waste your time coming here. read more

There is a huge collection of stuff and I wouldn't call it a thrift store as far as prices. When there is a sale, buying vinyl albums is at least reasonably priced. The store is disheveled and chaotic. There is consistently new inventory that isn't catalogued or put away. Today I spent over an hour goIng through items they hadn't put away. I came across several albums in great shape and when I presented them at the counter I was told, "oh, no, these are part of my personal collection, can't sell them." This was despite being in a cardboard clasped box. It's disorganized, it's disheveled, it's randomly priced, you do a lot of the work going through his stuff, and he doesn't pay you for the hours spent finding the nuggets inside his collection he doesn't know about. If there's a sale it's reasonable pricing but otherwise it's inconsistent at best. read more

This review is primarily based on their selection of men's clothing. I was let down pretty quickly by the pricing and lack of variety. Many items are not individually priced, which I do not think is fair to the customer. A few things that I thought were cool were over $100. This is definitely a pricier thrift store than most. The fact that is has a single dollar sign on Yelp is bearing on misleading. I did glance around at other stuff and I saw some interesting things here and there. Many times I thought to myself: "Oh this is kinda cool...oh...it's $50". I went back later to pick it up and the woman who works there couldn't find it. I left my number in case it turned up and left. I walked my dogs and was almost home when she calls to say she found it, but doesn't know the price (?). Won't sell it to me until I contact my friend and ask her the price she was quoted by the owner. My gf wasn't available and I was over it by then. Called today to see if by chance it's still there. The owner answers and it's still there, only he's bumped up the price to $100 now. Lol I reminded him he quoted 60 originally to which he replied, 'well, it's $100.' I love THRIFTY HIPPY! Monique, the owner, is THE BEST. I went there with my peoples and only had a few minutes before closing to be in there technically. I found this time oversize cheetah-print button up for like $10 and some retro shades for $6 or something like that. And because we were new to the area she also gave us tips on the best spot to eat nearby that would have plant-based food and live music and it was dope. She even met us there when she was off to hang out. And did I mention she gave us free wine out her shop too? Haha Thank YOU for your great customer service... I'm coming back soon. read more

I don't mind the chaotic clutter. That just increases the thrill of the hunt. I can even tolerate the unpredictable hours. But the pricing methods and the prices in general are absurd. Went in on a Sunday and bought a few cassette tapes at $3 each. Some were marked at higher prices, "all others are $3" I was informed. Since I didn't have the time to dig around that day, I went back 4 days later on Thursday and found some more $3 tapes that looked good to me. I get to the counter and pull out a credit card (probably where I made my mistake) and am told, "No, they're $5 each now because people are buying them and reselling them". What? The store was closed for the three days between my first and second visit, but the cassette prices went up 67% ? It almost seems like prices are set based on how much money the customer appears to have available. Paying with a credit card? The sky's the limit.... Regardless, most items are around or above top end eBay prices. you're better off shopping on eBay because you can target your purchases as opposed to maybe stumbling across something that looks interesting. There's nothing "thrifty" about this place. I won't be going back. read more

Thrifty Hippy is one of my favorite shops in Petaluma. There really is nothing else like it in the city. There are traditional thrift shops like Sacks Hospice and Alphabet Soup, but those stores sell mostly standard furniture and clothes. Whereas, the Thirty Hippy sells items that appeal to a person who is "younger at heart". Someone who loves all types of music, but especially rock and punk. They have a ton of clothes, comic books, vintage concert t-shirts, household items, furniture, and all kinds of eclectic off beat items. This store also would appeal to people of almost any age. From 20-30 year old hipsters, to people from 40-50 who still revel in their punk past, buying cool clothes from vintage stores like Aardvarks on Melrose, to girls looking to find cute vintage clothes and jewelry from the 50s and 60s, to those even older who remember and love the 70s. It is all here. My favorite part of the store is that you can literally get lost at all the stuff they have. Just when you think you have thoroughly peruse the entire store, your eye will still catch things you missed. read more

I really like this place! Great variety of selection, and I found these beautiful Japanese ceramic plates and vintage Coke bottles for my dad. The shop is dog friendly, and the owner/shopkeeper was very nice. I love being able to support local businesses. One star taken off because most items were not labeled with price (which is rare in my experience vintage shopping), and it makes the shopping experience a little inconvenient. But I'll definitely return to check out what's new in store. :) read more

A couple weeks ago I went to Thrifty Hippie to see what type of clothing they have. I found a really lovely 1960s lurex cocktail dress with no price. I asked the owner, the man with the dreadlocks for the price. He said he wanted $75 but if it didn't sell to come in the following week and he would sell for $50. I couldn't make it in the next week but the following week I did, and it was still there. I mentioned to him what he had said and he said no way would he have offered me that dress for $50. I looked and he had now tagged it at $125. I said "I see you raised it and that is fine, and I won't hold you to it, but you did say that." He immediately said in a VERY loud voice "Now way did I tell you that. No, I never said that!" O.k., I have no objection to the fact he raised the price to $125. That is his prerogative. And I am not upset that he failed to live up to his offer. What I object to is BEING CALLED A LIAR. I have advice for store owners. Its NEVER a good idea to imply a customer is making things up. If would have said "I might have said that but I changed my mind." FINE. But to make out like I am lying is very rude and unprofessional. I actually have a text I sent my friend the day he offered me the $50 option as I wanted her advice. I did not show it to him because it doesn't matter. You don't talk to people that way. I will never go in that store again. read more
