I bookmarked this place ages ago and stumbled into it today without even realizing it. This store totally has that retro/vintage vibe without the really high prices. I saw some cute things but didn't end up buying anything. I did notice a section just dedicated to records/cowboy boots and vintage clothing. Man, there is lots to see inside!! Owner is real chill, knows his stuff, just ask and he can point you in an area to look for something specific. Tons, of records/CDs. He'll negotiate, but also understandably needs to pay rent and stay in business, so he'll give you his best price and then you can decide. It's not your average used "thrift" store. It's more of a used collectables super hip shop. You will not be able to see everything in one visit. We're from out of town, and we're definitely coming back. Don't miss this store. A lot to look through and worth every delicious minute. There are many treasures to uncover here and the owners Monique and Sam are awesome. The atmosphere is very relaxed but this store is filled with many authentic one of a kind pieces so be respectful to the "will you take this for it" amount as you are already getting a price well below what it's worth. It's a thrift store, not a record store. But there a lot of records. Are the prices reasonable? Sure. I've pulled some great, cheap records out of here. Are there others that are overpriced, scratched up, etc.? Sure. You know what the option is? Don't buy them. Or ask for a better price. Chances are, you'll get it. Some people seem to think the prices are out of line with the location of the shop. I disagree. Petaluma is an hour outside most of the Bay, and on the weekends is crawling with hipsters in search of "vinyls." If they were all a dollar, the shop would be bereft of stock in a week. Love the staff and LOVE the variety in the store! This isn't a "thrift store" so don't expect the prices to compare to Goodwill. It's a locally owned, highly curated treasure hunt and gold mine for music collectors, people who like unique things, old concert T's, etc. They have a FREE room for kids, too--no purchase required. The owners are happy, helpful people who support the community. This is an amazing place in a great location, and they'll always get my business. read more

Strolled in here with the husband looking for some vintage furniture. Didn't find any furniture but left with 8 of some of my favorite vinyls from the 70s & 80s. They have the biggest selection of records I've ever seen and they were all somewhat organized. I was looking for something in particular and the store owner actually found what I was looking for pretty quickly. And since we bought 3 of their more collectible albums, we got the other 5 for only $1 each. Great selection, reasonably priced, nice & friendly service. I'm a fan! I'll be back! I love the store. You can stand in one spot and look all around and discover hundreds of wonderful & interesting things. It's fun because there's a little bit of everything including vintage music and very cool vintage T-shirts. Sam, the owner, is always helpful and friendly. Took a trip all the way up and back down California and shopped for records along the way. This was by far the best resource for great vinyl at a great price. I was reserved when I first saw the listed prices on the records, but when I spoke to Seth he assured me that I wouldn't overspend. When I brought him my stack of albums, he shaved prices off of every one and I bought at least fifteen records (a few listed at $20-$30 each) for $100. If you don't talk to the employees, you're bound to think this place is overpriced, but it definitely isn't. This place is vintage magic. It's like the trifecta of vintage stores - reasonable prices, quality merchandise, and so, so many cute dresses. I've even found some homemade vintage pieces here - and it really is kind of cool owning a piece of clothing that you can't just go out and buy resale. I always get nice comments when I wear something that I bought here. The owner is also a heck of a guy without the snobby elitist attitude that sometimes makes vintage shopping uncomfortable. He's a real down-to-earth kind of person, and if that weren't enough, he also offers free childrens' clothing AND donates unsold clothing to community outreach programs that help the homeless. The Thrifty Hippy is a great example of what business can be - friendly staff invested in their customers, and the community they are located in. You can trust me, for as long as the doors are open, I will be giving my patronage to this store. read more

I walked into this store shortly after 12pm yesterday and was excited to finally explore. I've been driving by for months and wanted to see what treasures they might have. As I got there I was surprised not to see their typical street set up, which is what had drawn me in in the first place on many drives by. Then I realized they were just opening even though Yelp says they open at 11. I didn't think much of it and started browsing. First, I noticed the dust. There's a lot of it. They're asking $16 for used, plastic beaded necklaces you can buy new for way less. Then, I noticed that MANY items were not priced. I have grown up in a family consignment/estate sale business and I know that if you aren't tagging everything religiously, then your pricing is probably all over the place. Just saying. I'm not even going to ask you how much it is, I'm not buying it if you don't price it before I walk in the door. The man working was pulling all kinds of items from different areas to pull outside. I went up to him with TWO items in my hands and asked if I could try them on. He casually waved me to the dressing room. They didn't fit and there was no designated rack for "go backs" so I hung both items on a rack just outside the dressing room and headed for the door. As I walked out he gave me an awkward look but I said bye and continued out. I walked into the neighboring store, made a round about to see what they had and then walked out to go to my car. THIS IS WHAT EARNED THIS REVIEW: As I walk out of the store the employee of The Thrifty Hippy comes up to me and says "Hey, where did you put those things you tried on?" - "Me?" I said "I hung them on the rack right outside the dressing room" - Employee: "Oh well, can you come show me? I know you had a bunch of stuff and I just can't find it" Me:"I had two things" Him: "OH, well you know, you have a really big bag and we have been having problems". I turn around and start to walk away shaking my head as he is still talking because I realize a) I've done nothing wrong b) this guy is basically accusing me of stealing AFTER I've left the store. That's illegal buddy. If you had a problem with my bag you could have easily asked me to put it at the front as soon as I walked in and I happily would have done so. Approaching some one OUTSIDE of the store AFTER they have left is unprofessional beyond words. Terrible impression made on a first time customer. And I know from your previous responses to Yelp reviews "you dont need my business because you have thousands of loyal customers" so don't you worry, I won't be back and I won't ever send any of my customers over after that encounter. read more

It had been a while since I had been here but I decided to come back to check out their vinyl. They had really expanded their vinyl selection and I found quite a few good records. I thought the prices were a little high, especially for some of the standard records you can find anywhere. However, the owner was really friendly and let me listen to whatever I wanted. He was also willing to barter with me a bit on the price and sold me some solid records for a decent deal. I would recommend this place for vinyl, just gotta dig a bit to find the good stuff. Went in here randomly and was excited to see vinyl. Decent selection but the prices on any of the good records were much higher than prices in any other record shop I've been to, and I've been to a lot. Nope. Call it a Retro vintage store, great. Not a Thrift store. Super over priced for the name and expectation. Simply not my style of Thrift shopping. OMG! This thrift store is stocked with tons of AWESOME items! You could seriously find anything anyone would desire! All good stuff too! I could stay in there all day finding treasures! I would say its the best place in town to gift shop for something unique. Also, great store for picking up deals on women's and men's clothes and FREE baby clothes. All the clothes are stylish and in great condition! The people running the place couldn't be friendlier and helpful in finding specific things I was looking for. I shopped here recently and scored some beautiful sterling silver jewelry and some super cute vintage clothes. I will definitely make this a frequent stop because I love treasure hunting and buying resale items at great prices. This store is a one of a kind! read more

BEST RECORD STORE in Petaluma and a great place to shop for Christmas! Crazy amazing vintage records and great prices. Sam's record collection is amazing. I bought my super rare Grateful Dead, Rolling Stones, Doors, Jimi Hendrix and favorite live Chicago blues records here and they were cheap too. I love spending hours and hours here and I always find something I've never seen before and just can't live without. Go now and go often. read more

The pricing here across the board is pretty absurd, But my main gripe is with the prices on records. Prices 2-3x what they're worth, tons of junk records being sold for 5-10x their value, high-priced classic rock albums that are a dime a dozen, etc. There are several outstanding record stores in the area; I would recommend skipping this one. read more

The thrifty Hippie is the bomb!!! I love how sweet the owners are . They are so helpful if you're looking for something that's almost impossible to find. Great prices. Clean merchandise. All kinds of goodies. I really like the fact that all the children s items are free. Clothes , shoes and toys! So nice for families affected by the economy. I will do my best to encourage my family and friends to shop there but also to donate their lovingly use childrens items. I can't say enough good things about the Thrifty Hippy. Out of the countless shops I went to in Petaluma this was one of my favorites. The environment is so cool and relaxed and the owner is as sweet as they come. Such a genuinely nice guy; bent over backwards just to find a little item for me and was more then willing to go totally out of his way to make me happy. The room in the back with all of the free kids stuff impressed me a lot. All he asks is that for every item you take you hang something else back up so others will have a chance to take what they need. I simply can't give enough praise. Good selection.. although I found a few items overpriced .. I came looking for a leather jacket and found them to be too expensive for me..common around Petaluma i have found. Some of things like shoes seemed more reasonably priced. They did have a great free kids section i noticed.. although it was mostly baby clothing for under 1year old. I love this new store! It's exactly what I've been wishing for. It's in a great location, the employees are awesome and they have great thrift store finds. My favorite part was dropping off a bag of outgrown kid's clothes to find out their policy is that I get a free bag full of children's clothes in return! I just replaced all my donated kids clothes with ones that they love for free! They have great finds there from antique jewelry to hip clothes. I know I'll be a regular customer. You may have thought that all the heart centered, re-use because it's good for the earth 'thrift' shops have been killed off by vintage, antique over-priced up-cycled stores,,, but no - here is the real deal. The Thrifty Hippy is owned by a very cool, nice guy who cares alot... so much so that there are free clothes for kids and a clothing exchange. Also amazing music playing, very well organized jeans (under 10 bucks!), and wonderful people who work here and smile. Makes me want to call it the Happy Hippy Thrift!! Love. read more

What a GEM of a store :) I stumbled upon this place while doing some antique hunting in the Petaluma/Sonoma area. By far one of the more reasonable places to find fun treasures. Unlike other consignment places who tend to be overly picky with clothing trade-in's- the owner welcomed my donations/trade-in's like they were actually appreciated. The name speaks for itself! The owner was helpful, welcoming, and definitely added to the extra flare to the unique surrounding. Great guy! I found an array of awesome items here- he has a wonderful collection of Mid Century furniture as well as a stellar collection of records. Prices are fair and this is one thrifty business that will continue to have my support. I live in the San Jose area and will definitely say this place is worth coming to while in the downtown Petaluma area! read more

Love this place. It's a hidden treasure with lots of hidden treasures. Came in looking for tea cups for a tea party and not only did I find everything I needed for a great price (a whole set) but found more things that I just fell in love with. The salesperson was so nice and very helpful. The back room with the children's clothing is fabulous. Overall, I will definitely be coming back. They have a new returning costumer. read more

Great Shop! I randomly decided to stumble in one day last month just for the heck of it. Let me tell you-best decision ever! As soon as you walk in, you can tell it has a great environment! Music playing on classic systems. Clothes and antiques greet you upon entry. I am a vinyl lover. I was amazed at the turntable collection there was for sale and in such good condition. The owner told me he is an enthusiast as well and he always puts work into the stuff that comes into the store so it's worth your buy. I was looking for some records and he was right there offering suggestions and help. Real pleasure being in there. I spent like 25 minutes in the vinyl selection alone. Lot's of great clothes. I needed a kitchen table and chairs for my son's first apartment, and told him the price range, and woohoo, there he found one. Anything you need, you can find there for good prices.
