Chew 62 - Fresh haddock, broccoli and baked potato

Chew 62

We went here for an early dinner on our 48 marriage anniversary (yeah, I know; we can't believe it…read moreeither). We were told to seat. Ourselves, and as it was a great day, we sat outside, which is undercover. I saw they had Guinness, but as it turned out only in cans, so I settled for water. The first time we try a new place that has whole belly clams, I tend to get them, but in this case I was determined to try something different.so i ordered the veggie kebabs and add shrimp to the order for some protein. It was excellent with a subtle Smokey taste Beth's peppers, onions, mushrooms and zucchini cooked just right: not too soft or too crisp. I had excellent mashed potato with real flavor as one side, and the best onion rings I have had in a long time for the second side. My wife had the bomb.com steak sandwich and the sample I tasted proved it to be good also. The chopped steak wasn't chewy as it often seems to be in sandwiches. She had a side of mac and cheese which was a rather unique curly pasta rather than just a small macaroni. It also came with a small serving of cole slaw. I wanted to have the basic sundae for dessert, my wife disapproved I of their using mere Hershey chocolate syrup and vowed she would make us better sundaes here at home. So we had fried ice cream instead. We shared one and it was fine, but not destined to be a favorite of mine. Still. I know we will go back to Chew 62 at some point. It was that good.

This was another pleasant surprise on a rambling motorcycle ride. We tried to go to the Mill Cafe,…read morebut it closes at 2pm on Saturdays. We saw that Chew 62 was .1 miles away so headed over there. When walking in, there was no one there and I questioned if it was actually open but thankfully it was! The ambiance is a bit odd, but I bet it's better when the place is busier. We each got a hamburger- they are very big patties but really good and super juicy. I got onion rings and they were homemade!! And well-seasoned. I would definitely get those, though I saw the fries were also fresh-cut too. I would definitely go back.

Lake Parlin Lodge & Cabins

Fantastic place to vacation. Peaceful and yet there's lots to do! We come about once a year…read more Staying here is the best sleep I get all year. We've been here to visit many times: seeing friends, family reunions and a wedding!! Lots of outdoor activities around as well. Highly recommend! A+++

We were thrilled to stay here! This was a last minute decision and it was a perfect blessing! The…read morecabins were spotless, roomy and had the exact log cabin feel and look. The cabins faced the lake which was breath taking in the morning! It is directly in front of the cabins, so even a morning coffee or a night cap is divine! They have fire pits set up, one with Adirondack chairs and another with a pergola of swings around it overlooking the lake. Kayaks and paddle boats are also free to use. There was a boat also that you can take out but the lake was low so we didn't chance it! Kitchen is beautiful and beds are really comfy! There is NO AIR CONDITIONERS. NO FANS. So if you get hot, have hot flashes or sweat like a pig at night, you can bring a fan or jump in the lake to cool off. We opened windows but still was warm inside. As far as supplies, Skowhegan is an hour away, go there for groceries from a name brand business, Walmart, Hannafords. If you have been to NH, (White Mts area), you will not find the cute little popular breakfast nooks here like you do there even in Jackman (the next town over). You will need to head back toward Skowhegan but only abt 10 mins from the cabins. This place is called The Hawks Nest, see my review! We visited Moxie Falls which is an ideal trip. it takes abt 15 mins to get there from the cabins. WELL WORTH IT! We also rented ATV's and went out on the trails. You can white water raft but not sure which months that includes. We went in Sept and they were still rafting! There are plenty of snow mobile trails as well and scenic places that are amazing! This place is in the WOODS! Expect to travel for miles for quick snacks or drinks, no big gas stations like multiple gas pumps, but there are some mom and pop places, no big grocery stores, just plain woods! There are a few restaurants that looked ok. The Hawks Nest was the best looking, cleanest place that we saw. Mama Bears is in Jackman and we were referred to eat there but after driving by, we felt we should go the other direction. it was quite small and not so attractive. Liz was wonderful and answered every question we had before during our stay. We will be back there and this time bringing all 5 kids! We cant wait!

La Rochelle Mansion & Museum

Bottom Line: A guilded age mansion that gives a glimpse into the history of Bar Harbor and the…read moreearly 1900s. La Rochelle is a large, historical home overlooking Frenchman Bay. While it was once the 41-room summer cottage for the Bowdoin family today it serves as the headquarters of the the Bar Harbor Historical Society. The mansion is also a wedding venue. If, when visiting La Rochelle you are hoping to feel like you are stepping into a time machine to 1903, you'll need a lot of imagination. The mansion has been the home to various families and it has served several purposes since it was the Bowdoin's summer cottage. So, the physical structure is original but very little else is. Also, a lot of the rooms are closed and serve as private offices or storage for the Bar Harbor Historical Society. But, as a bonus, there is a lot of Bar Harbor history and artifacts displayed throughout. What I found most interesting about La Rochelle was the Flower Room including the placement of it. I can recall visiting mansions with a designated area of the kitchen or butler's pantry for assembling flower arrangements but I can't recall one that had a dedicated Flower Room. I also thought it was interesting that the Flower Room was placed adjacent to the main foyer instead of closer to where the servants would be working. La Rochelle is a wonderful piece of Bar Harbor and American history and I am grateful that the Bar Harbor Historical Society was able to purchase La Rochelle to preserve it for future generations. I also appreciate the very kind volunteers that work at the mansion. La Rochelle is am impressive site from West Street but it looks even more impressive from water, or so I imagine. We did not get to see the house from that view but based on pictures, you can really see the elevation of the home and the many chimneys. Before leaving La Rochelle we visited the gift shop which is full of pretty things. I was eyeing up some puzzles but due to very limited space in my suitcase I just purchased a few greeting cards. Overall we had a nice visit to La Rochelle and we were glad to support the Bar Harbor Historical Society.

Was having a great time till we went into the gift shop and the first 3 sentences from the gift shop cashier was political. Such a bumer to end on a sour note.
