This place sucked. Course was in ok enough shape. overpriced, but typical for the area. Played on a Friday morning and pace of play was dreadful. Had to wait at least 5 min on every tee box. Some of the par 3s was waiting 10-15 min on the tee box. The marshals out on the course were clearly clueless and rude. Around the 5th hole, our group is in the fairway, clubs in hand, waiting for the green to clear to hit approaches.... Marshal comes up and tells us we need to hurry up and we're behind pace. We chuckled and thought he was joking. Clearly he can see that people are on the green, we can't hit yet, there are people on the next tee box waiting to tee off, and a group behind us waiting to tee off. Then a few holes later after waiting 10min on the tee we hit our tee shots as soon as the fairway clears. A different marshal rolls up as we're about to ride off and gives us grief because the group in front of is near the green and we only finished teeing off. I guess he doesn't realize it only takes about 20 seconds to drive from the fairway up to the green but it does take more than 20 seconds to hit 4 tee shots. I don't think I'll be going back there for a long time. Just a crappy experience by packing in tee times too tightly and not keeping the course moving. read more

Friday afternoon tee time at 3:03. Show up on the first tee and there are 4 groups on the first hole. One on the green one in the fairway and two on the tee box. We would make 5 groups. Management blamed it on an outing. How many outings have they done? Anyway, save your money and go to a real course like the Woodlands in Baltimore County. I've never encountered this type of problem. read more

Not worth the price at all. Course is in good shape but ever since they introduced "dynamic pricing" it has stopped being worth the money. In theory, dynamic pricing is supposed to adjust rates with respect to the demand and desirability of the tee time. Instead, they use it as a way of charging exorbitant prices for any time of day. You used to be able to pay $70 for a Saturday morning tee time, but now you're paying $100+. Normally, this would make sense given that this is a prime time slot for golfing. The only issue is they don't make this adjustment for low demand tee times. Before dynamic pricing, you could pay $45 for twilight hours but now you're paying $70. It's just ridiculous and insulting how they try to deceive you into thinking that this is for the best interest of the golfers when this is clearly a cash grab for a mediocre course. read more

I've played here over twenty times in the last 10, this is the last time I'll ever play here. While the course is in good shape and not too far of a drive for me, this will be the last time I will allow the rude staff to be disrespectful. Not everyone is bad, but the course Marshall should have used a more polite and professional tone. Instead of coming up and damn near yelling at us. No previous warnings. He assumed we were "looking for balls" instead of just noticing we had a young man (11 years old) playing his first ever round of golf. I never play the race card, but I really wondered if he talks that way to everyone or just people of darker complexion. We picked up the pace, then two hole later, there he was again hanging over our shoulder. I went and told him about our novice golfer and this he indicated that the people behind us complained about our pace of play. He could have said that the first time and as I said just communicated it in a more polite manner. This is not the first time I've dealt with rudeness at this course, but is absolutely the last time. Pace of play is atrocious. If you're not playing 5-5.5 hour 18. Then you're skipping holes to try and make it out under 5. The green have been in a state of "aeration" since I first played them back in February. Good layout, tough from the tips, and a great location. Overall the conditions of the course were good but not great. The greens were slow and soft which also meant giant spike-marks everywhere. Some putts I hit would jump five inches in the air and lose all momentum. Decent amount of blind shots too which makes for a longer round; our was 5 hours and 15 minutes long on a weekend. The range is fine and they have a putting green and a separate chipping green which is nice. I would probably only return if I needed to wait around for someone at BWI; otherwise, it's not necessarily worth the trip. And food-wise the wings were solid. read more

Beautiful layout here in Howard County near Montgomery Road. They have a nice driving range and two practice putting and chipping areas I really enjoyed the first hole starting out with the poor and looking forward to the rest of the course read more

Great course for being one of the few public courses in Howard County. Overall it's a great course that is narrow and has clean sand traps. The only issues I have ever run into is the occasional slow paced group with no ranger running around and the aeration of the greens making it almost impossible to put. Overall I would recommend this course due to difficulty and green grass. Pricing can be a bit steep but when you are the only public course it makes sense. read more

The Timbers at Troy is Howard County's only county-owned golf course. It is a real asset to our community. It is a beautiful, challenging layout in a convenient location in eastern Howard County. The facility has an excellent practice area, with a driving range that features mats on one end and grass on the other, as well as a chipping green and dedicated putting green. The course itself is probably the most interesting and challenging layout in the area, certainly in Howard County. The 18 holes present a variety of tests, including numerous forced carries, lots of elevation change, and some narrow fairways. The course challenges you to think about how best to attack it, and there are rewards for good course management. It is a tough golf course, but it is fair. Your results will reflect your choices. A recent piece on Golf.com asked "What makes a good golf course?" Timbers meets all three criteria. Every hole is distinct and memorable, presenting different problems and a variety of beautiful views. It is the kind of course you could play every day and never tire of. Finally, it is a place you'd want to walk even if you are not playing. The course is challenging to walk, so few do. Most folks are in carts. Walking makes sense here, however, because of the pleasant surroundings and the ability to get around about as fast as someone in a cart if you don't mind some hills. One of my favorite ways to play here is to go out on the back nine early in the morning, when it is practically deserted. Walking, alone, at that time of day, the course is quiet and peaceful, and a nine hole round can easily take far less than two hours, and the prices are good. The recent renovations, including rebuilding all of the bunkers have significantly upgraded the course's appearance and playability. Some bunkers have been removed or altered to improve pace of play. The staff is cordial and professional. They are responsive to concerns and have stepped up policing of pace of play over the past couple of years. I went to Timbers at Troy today to prepare for my round of golf this Saturday. The sign reads that $5 buys you 30-35 balls, I paid $10. The ball machine is down so the older gentleman behind the counter had to fill the basket by hand. He gave me the basket of balls and I walked to the driving range. The baskets seemed to be short on the number of balls so I dumped them out to count. This picture is the number of balls left after I hit 3. The Timbers at Troy - Golf Near Me - Elkridge, Maryland

Ok so this course isn't as bad as say playing on the street or Rocky gorge but it's close. The conditions of the greens are horrible. I grew up learning on the green you fix your divot plus 1. At Timbers it's ignore your divot and spike the green with your 8 iron. The fairways are spotty and the traps look like remnants of mortar explosions. Also a lot of rocks in them so watch your trusty wedge while in them. Service is up and down but on average it blows. Our cart broke down one outing, called the pro-shop and they didn't have a spare. Now I know it's not a big deal to walk several holes but doing so while making the perfect martini is difficult. When I made it back to the shop to ask maybe about a rain check for a cart fee the guy basically told me "tough". Nice All in all if you need to stick in this basic area to golf just go a couple miles down 70 and to Waverly. Timbers is not worth it. read more

Normally, I would give a place like this 4 stars. A municipal course that's somewhat challenging, decent tee boxes, and a special where you pay for a draft beer 1 cent for every stroke you hit that day (Mine would've been 94 cents). But I will complain about the sprinklers going off in the middle of the fairways while we were playing. And how about one hole where the gardeners were all over the green, and one was driving around in a big giant tractor. If I wanted that, I would've just gone to a driving range. For being a convenient golf course, right near the intersection of 100 and 95, I rarely play this course, unless someone in my group is desperate to get here. Otherwise, I would steer clear of this course. Timbers sets itself up as an upscale course and certainly enjoys charging an upscale price. I know that golf isn't cheap, a fact I'm reminded of every time I check my credit card statement, but this place is ridiculously overpriced. I try to play during the weekdays during the summer due to the freedom associated with my job, but for $56 bucks for Monday thru Thursday, I find this to be a bit excessive. That is more than Waverly Woods and The Woodlands, as well as most Central MD courses. Shiver me Timbers, that's a lot of money! On Friday, the price jumps to $61 and on the weekend, if you want to play in the morning, you are going to shell out $68. I can live with that price for a weekend round of golf, I guess, but the $56 is what really gets me. Second, for the price you should expect a top notch experience, but unfortunately, this is where Timbers really slips. While the course is generally in decent shape, because of all of the slopes and elevation changes, the course is really inconsistent. One time you'll be hitting on a flush fairway and another time you'll be hitting from a dry patch of dirt in another fairway. Also, this course will tear you apart if you aren't good and/or lucky. Many of the holes have forced carries over wetland type areas and blind tee shots to landing areas that tend to slope away from you or into a bunker/rough. My other warning: If you are playing here on a weekend, make sure you have allocated no less than 5.5 hours, perhaps more. The way the tee times are staggered and the level of difficulty, coupled with all the wooded areas, means this course plays slow...crockpot slow. I just don't find it a fun course to play, especially if I am spending that much money. read more

Drops after on the other side of every single carry keeps the pace of play moving right along though it felt like we had the course to ourselves! I can't wait to come back here again! read more

Decent course. The fairway is narrow, like other reviewers have said. Half the course is straight the other have is blind turns and valleys with no sight. For what I was told the price was, it was way too much for that kind of course. Luckily, I was taken for a work outing. Should have a drink cart roaming around at least. read more

Driving range in horrible condition, practice green was horrible , most tee boxes were bad,fairways and roughs were not very well groomed, bunkers were 90% dirt 5% sand and 5% rocks. The Greens were absolutely the worst I have ever seen. They gave $10 off the Greens fees and I still felt ripped off. When we said something to the director about the substandard conditions he just told us how great they are going to make the bunkers. When I told friends I was playing there I heard great things and was very excited . I am very let down and will not bet returning anytime soon. My boyfriend treated me to a round of golf as part of my birthday celebration this past weekend (yesterday, as a matter of fact). My boyfriend is an AVID golfer...he plays an average of 6 days a week, and literally 'studies' golf during every waking hour. He is part of 3 different groups who travel to Myrtle Beach to play in tournaments during the Spring, Summer, and Fall. I, too, absolutely love to play golf, but not to that extent. I say all of this to give the reader an idea of our level of exposure to the game and different courses. We were extremely pleased with the quality and condition of this course, and the professionalism of the staff at the course. The course is 'tight' (narrow) and very challenging, which is why it is a wonderful practice course if you're preparing to play in Myrtle Beach. Although the tee boxes were not in perfect condition, and a few of the bunkers need cleaning up, the fairway was beautiful and well manicured. As for the aesthetics, it's really a gorgeous course; very scenic. Maybe because the weather was so pleasant yesterday, we were not overtaken by bugs, flies, or any other insects, which can ruin your fun while playing golf. As for the staff....TOP NOTCH!! We're nominating one of the starters (Greg) as the "Starter of the Year" because he was outrageously funny, kind, charming, laid-back, and an all-around great guy TO EVERYONE. You could tell that Greg really enjoys his job and being around people on the golf course. He made me feel relaxed by reminding me to "have fun" rather then feel the pressure of making a good shot. And it was "how he said it" rather then the words that he used. But all of the staff that we encountered were very professional. I could go on and on, but...well, I have to get back to my own job. (smile) Oh, BTW, we enjoyed our first round of golf so much that we played a second round immediately afterwards. (Oh, I forgot to also mention another Starter named Jeff, who was also really nice and accommodating when we decided to play an extra round of golf.) read more

I was in the area so I played after a meeting. Was surprised that it costs $24 to walk 9 holes when you tee off at 6pm. I suggest playing the blue tees to add some length to the front 9, otherwise it is way too short. Like others, I was disappointing in the quality of the fairways and greens. Too many fairway divots were not replaced or sanded and the greens were really banged up. The course should give each player a divot tool and remind them to replace their divots when they pay for their greens fees. I play the muni courses in Baltimore and they are cheaper and in better shape. All in all, not worth $24 to walk 9 at 6pm on Monday. read more

Horrible round today due to extremely rude ranger who didn't do his job keep up pace of play. He intentionally put a twosome behind a foursome, then all but refused to hurry up the foursome or suggest to them to let the twosome play through. We called the clubhouse twice after multiple times seeing this foursome on the tee box while the entire hole in front of them was empty. This particular foursome was taking on average of 5-10 minutes per green as well. Course was in pretty good shape, but the experience with this ranger and pace of play ensures I will never be back. BTW-the price was lowered to $60, which is about $20 overpriced for the quality of layout and upkeep. read more

2nd tee time of the morning and it took 5 1/2 hours. Rangers don't have the ability to force other golfers to speed it up. Course is in OK shape, sand traps are great. You would've thought they would give a discount for aerating the greens, but they don't tell you when they do it. You get that surprise at the 1st hole. $71 to play isn't worth the money, I would go to Waverly woods where they push people to play in 4-4 1/2 hours. read more

Played early AM. Pace was fine. Layout is very interesting and challenging. You definitely need an experienced partner to explain lines. Course was in terrible shape for a $70 greens fee. Fairways and tee boxes all showed lots of need. It was the bunkers thst were the worst. A mix of thick mud, gravel and thr occasional patch of sand. Just terrible. We went on a Saturday morning and it had been raining but not too bad. We walked the course because it was cart path only with a cart so it would be quicker if we walked. It was $54 to walk 18 holes. Way overpriced for the condition of the course. The greens were not well maintained and there were a lot of bare and burnt out areas on the fairways and greens. There are other courses within a 20 mile radius that are much better and much more fun than this course. Definitely recommend going to a different course instead of this one. read more

I have really never seen a proshop or a golf Pro with as little manners and concern for their customers at Timbers of Troy. Not just lack of manners, they are down right rude! I will not golf here and I tell others to avoid this course. There is little chance of playing less than a 5 hour round b/c their tee times are 7 minutes apart. The only good thing is location and that is the only reason they are in business. If you care about any customer service, do not play this course. read more

The Timbers golf course has reopened with a new and improved irrigation system and find white sand traps. No more drainage problems and no more pebbled traps. The course is in great shape! read more

I've played this course several times thinking is going to get better. Each time I come back I think it gets worse. Just played on Fathers days and almost all the bunkers (Except the ones you can see from the street) were filled with water and had minos growing in them. They want to charge premium rates and do not take care of this course. This will be my last time playing here. Hopefully enough people will do the same and they will either fix the problems or lower the costs! My recommendation.........Find another course to play at! read more

Started out on the wrong foot with the cashier in the Pro Shop who unnecessarily gave me the 3rd degree. Rather than straight up saying that he could not give me a discounted rate, he kept asking me questions he already knew the answers to. Then he finished by saying that I needed 'to go buy a Tee Time book'. I do not think any customer would appreciate such attempts to be embarassed by the help. I went ahead and paid the $51 only to dodge running sprinklers on numerous holes. And for those reasons...I am out! read more

Why does it cost $70 to play here? Not worth it at all. I've played this course a few times over the past 3 years and prices have gone up each year. After my 5.5 hour round Saturday, probably never going back. There are much better courses that are $10-$15 cheaper in the area with faster play. read more
