I don't get over to Mason much. My professional roles don't require me to engage with county government very often, unless I'm popping in to see my dear mentor Derrick Quinney, register of deeds. On those few visits, I've noticed a sprinkling of interesting food options around the courthouse. So, when my co-reviewer and I landed on the Tipsy Nickel as our destination this month, I was excited to step into an unknown-to-me corner of the community. Standing at the site of the former Darb's Tavern & Eatery and on the shoulders of its sister restaurant, Dansville's Wooden Nickel II, the Tipsy Nickel is a family-owned business serving higher-end pub fare and signature cocktails to treat locals and new visitors alike. Nightly specials include prime rib and seafood boils, and the autumnal drink is hot apple cider. The restaurant has a classic bar feel with modern touches and an intimate vibe. I saw customers having both dinner with friends and casual drinks. The dim lighting and rustic decor create a welcoming atmosphere, ideal for unwinding after a long day. It also has an outdoor patio, which offers a more relaxed space to enjoy your meal or sip a cold beer while people-watching in downtown Mason -- weather permitting. The staff is attentive, friendly and genuinely seem to enjoy what they do. Whether you're seated at the bar or in the dining area, you'll soon be greeted with a smile and offered prompt service. The bartenders are skilled drink crafters, and servers are efficient without being overbearing. I just wish someone would've stepped in when one seemingly regular bar fly pontificated about his relationships and political beliefs at decibel levels unbecoming for others wanting to enjoy their own thoughts. What's OK I've tried a lot of brisket over the years -- it's one of my favorite things to order off any barbecue menu. Typically, the meat is smoked for many hours, creating a flavorful crust and a deep smokiness that transports you to the middle of West Texas or another barbecue haven with every bite. Sadly, the brisket tacos ($16) lacked those notes of true brisket. Perhaps the smokiness was masked by the competing flavors of the apple-kale slaw and tzatziki sauce, but when examining the overly gray chunks of meat, I couldn't discern any seasoning on the meat itself. The tacos were stuffed full, and three would be enough for a solid meal. What's good The calamari appetizer ($15) was fried perfectly and arrived as a generous portion. I paired it with a seasonal beer and really appreciated how the black pepper on the calamari balanced so well with the orange marmalade dipping sauce. A little citrusy kick went a long way. Also quite yummy was the spinach salad ($19), which contained a perfectly medium salmon steak, green apples, dried cranberries and candied pecans. The star was the apple cider vinaigrette, which should be bottled and sold separately. Best bite The signature PB&J burger ($16) has been a topic of discussion in local foodie circles for a while, and it did not disappoint. The half-pound handheld was well seasoned and served on a pretzel bun. Usually, that would be enough for a winner, but the Tipsy Nickel took it up several notches with cheddar cheese, maple-bacon jam, caramelized onions and maple syrup. You might be asking yourself, "But what about the peanut butter?" Let me say, it was a high note among all those other delicious melodies. It offered a creaminess and earthiness that you wouldn't think you'd need, but given all the other components, it helped to marry everything together. read more

We were driving south on US-127 looking to grab dinner and noticed the usual places to stop. We were about to keep driving when my wife saw the reviews for this place. We went, not expecting much but willing to be pleasantly surprised. And surprised we were. Before the food hit the table, we had already enjoyed excellent cocktails. When the food arrived, we really enjoyed the PB&J burger and the chicken kebabs. The only thing that was really just okay were the shrimp tacos. The staff were all friendly and on top of things. We found this Gem in Mason yesterday! It has an awesome atmosphere.... It is an older restaurant that has been updated in a way that totally enhances its uniqueness!! The service was excellent! They were very personable and attentive' The food was absolutely delicious!! I had the PBJ burger with crispy fries! My Bill had Italian flat bread... he loved it!! Visited for first time for anniversary and was blown away with their food. I eat a lot of ribeye steaks and tonight I had the best ribeye steak I ever had in my 75 years. Food is delicious there; seasoned well and has always been cooked perfectly. The menu has a great selection with unique sauces and combinations. I am hooked on their shrimp tacos, the salmon is amazing and the Chicken Cordon Wrap is a favorite, too! The only reasons I wouldn't give them 5 stars: 1. it's only been one server for the whole place every time we've been there. We've always had great wait staff, but it requires some patience when they're busy. 2. Today they were out of toilet paper in the restroom (yuck!) with no backup supply, and they had been open less than an hour! How does that happen?! They don't have paper towels available either, just a blower in the restrooms. Our server (tending a bar full of customers and tables mostly filled in the dining room by this point) said she already knew it was out and was hoping to find a moment to go buy some! There was no note on the door to warn anyone, or I could have grabbed my purse which had tissues in it. That really blew the 5-star rating! It made us wonder about the cleanliness of cook staff or various surfaces, but we had already eaten. Normally it seemed clean in there with a nice decor, cloth napkins, reasonable prices and great food. They do often have a rowdy bar crowd (even on Sunday mornings) though, so atmosphere does vary. When they got to the table they looked so good that I forgot to take a picture until I already eat one of them. The service was very prompt and she was on point. Went here the other day and I have to say I am more than impressed!! The young girl running this awesome place is so sweet and did an amazing job her parents must be very proud of her she was our waitress and she did and amazing job advertising and listing the specials and explaining the menu to me and my husband!! Love the comfy atmosphere and friendly service. If you get the artichoke dip ask for it in a real bowl instead of the bread bowl. It comes served with tasty bread to eat it with so you don't touch the actual bread bowl and it soaks up the dip so you don't get as much. Otherwise, the dip itself is delicious. Also, if you get a side salad ask for it in a bowl too. A salad on a plate doesn't work. It falls off left and right but the homemade ranch is very good. read more
