Stopped in after the haunted hayride/cornmaze nearby in a group of 6 people. They were not busy as it was after 8pm at that point. We enjoyed the beef birria tacos which were big and filling, with a nice crispy shell. We also tried the chicharron yuca appetizer, also a big size. We took home some leftovers that were eaten for breakfast! The coconut lemonade was really good, though it is a little pulpy at the bottom. They were out of some of the other drinks I wanted to try but we did enjoy this one. The restaurant was bright and our server was nice. Got takeout on a Sunday night for seven people. Ready in 45 minutes. Food was good. No complaints. Service was fine. Small restaurant with minimal staff. Price was very reasonable by today's standards. Plenty of parking on the street or in the municipal lot around back. Bring quarters for the meter. read more

This is my favorite place for lunch and dinner in town. I absolutely adore the tostones mixtos and the steak tacos. The fired cheese bites with guava sauce is adored by my family who finally had a chance to get to the restaurant and discover that as good as they were reheated at home they were unbelievable at the restaurant. The atmosphere at the place is clean, tropical and staff has always been wonderful. The Birria is spicy as are the shrimp tacos. Have a mora - with milk (leche) to cool it down. At some point I need to venture further on the menu but it is difficult... I truly love what I have mentioned. Parking can be tricky depending on time of day but there is a lot in the back. I enjoyed this casual dining Costa Rican restaurant in late September, 2024, but don't know how authentic it is, because I haven't visited CR. My wife did not care for the cilantro in the salad. My family didn't know much about Hackettstown but El Tucan was recommended by someone we met in town. It's a small restaurant with several tables that serves Costa Rican food. Everything we had was good. I ordered the shrimp with rice but got the chicken instead. The portion was decent sized and salad that accompanied had a lemon based dressing. It was ok. The fries were decent. I really liked the nachos, which tasted fresh with a very crunchy consistency and two salsas that went very well with the appetizer. Slammin' My family are snobs when it comes to all food central and South American. Growing up in Hudson County and having family in Jamaica Queens we have enjoyed the best of the best. Just moved up to this area and scoping out the food scene and I ran across El Tucan. I can't tell you how great the food is. I practically ordered half the entire menu and my family and I were floored. The taco and empanada shells were made out of fresh ground corn. Legit. The fillings were fresh and the meat to shell ratio were perfect. My son is not a fan of empanadas but I forced him to try the beef. He tried playing off that it was average and then started laughing and wanted more. To his disappointment I only ordered one lol We ordered the taco platter to sample all the recipes and one was better than the next. The chicken was our least favorite but was still great. The fish and shrimp were exceptional as was the beef. The nachos were fresh and spot on with plenty of topping. The fish ceviche was great. I'm used to more cilantro but that is a matter of personal taste. The fish was cured perfectly - super tender with just enough acid and not hint of rubber. I probably never had better Birria meat as I did in the egg rolls. Melt in your mouth and perfectly seasoned. Enjoyed the fact that they weren't over salted. The egg roll was crispy and just the right thickness and had ZERO greasiness. Zero. Mind you this was a delivery order. Cannot wait to eat it right out of the kitchen. Fantastico!!! read more

Ordered take out on a Friday night. We tried the chips and guac, birria tacos, birria burrito & a chicken quesadilla. The guac was a miss - no flavor at all. The birria on the other hand was tender and flavorful. Chicken quesadillas were decent as well! The one weird thing they did which concerned me - they put a side of MAYO with the quesadilla ... we're used to getting sour cream with these types of meals so I almost let my 3 year old dip her quesadilla in thankfully I realized before she did because she is allergic to eggs and cannot eat mayo. read more

If it wasn't take-out, we would have sent everything back except maybe the seviche. The meat in the tacos was tough, dry and bland. Barely edible. Insult to injury, they included shrimp tacos, after being advised of an allergy. The plantains were tough as shoe leather and not seasoned with anything - inedible, threw the whole thing out. Seviche (not shrimp) was OK, but more lime, cilantro, onion would have made it better. Guacamole was also just OK. It seemed to have been thinned with something. Too liquidy, and yet somehow not enough lime. And it can't be that they were too busy, as the place was completely empty when I came to pick up my order at 6 pm on Friday.... To top it all off, this pleasure cost $85. As a matter of policy, I never go back to a place that ignores instructions about a food allergy, so I will not be coming back. read more
