Man, I wish I'd have read the reviews first! We've been here before and have not had an issue but today, it was like they were actually TRYING to be rude! First, our server, Darrah, was SUPER SWEET! None of this reflects on her! Even though I'm pretty sure the owner took it out on her! I ordered the "Honey bourbon beef FILET tips". I realized as it was seved to me that i was never asked, nor did i mention how i wanted my steak cooked. I blamed myself when it came out Well done. I asked Darrah if i could get them MR because i couldnt eat steak well done!! She said no problem. I said if it is, ill just get something else. She said no its ok. Around 20 mins later, everyone else is done eating, i knew i wasnt getting MR this time either! I definitely did not. They were actually worse then the first, now XWell. Sadly, I was done trying and wasn't even going to get something else. I ate some of my chips and my fries instead. Darrah ​, seeing i wasn't eating those either offered to just have then taken off. I agreed. The manager (?? Blonde bartender) comes over and said "who had the tips?" I said I did. She says, "well we don't cook them MR, but that was my fault as I told her we would" I said ok I asked, and said I'd get something else if not. To which she says "well we took off the second charge of $7 for the "extra" beef tips". I just kind of stared at her and thought wait did they charge me for fixing a bad meal? Then I said "the second charge?" Her response "well you got a second portion of meat you get charged for it" to which I said "but the first portion wasn't even edible, I was hoping the second would be if they were less cooked" her -- "well I took off the second $7 charge. You ate your sides, I'm not taking off the full charge ($20) and if you don't like that then you can talk to my manager," then walks away. Now I truly debated on whether to chalk this up as a mistake I won't make again, pay for it, and not deal with the rudeness anymore, but I was paying $20 for chips and fries. At least take off the meal and charge me for those two sides. Considering the lady was super rude about it, I wasn't going to let it go. I asked to speak to the owner, Rod. He doesn't have the best reputation, but being in food service my whole life, I'm still being nice. He walks to the table says "what's the problem" I start "I got the beef filet tips" .....interrupted, "I know, we don't cook them less than well, and she should've known better". I said well I asked and was told you could or else I'd have.....he then swipes the receipt from the table, rudely, walks away, saying "I'll just take it off". I was in the middle of my sentence!! I wasn't being rude or anything nor did I expect a free meal! But I'd have love to have food that was edible! I'll gladly pay for my chips and fries. I've been doing this same work for a VERY long time, I have NEVER seen such a Terrible owner or manager. Let's be honest, we all have those days where you WANT TO SAY well you ate it, you should pay for it....but I did not. Neither could even be eaten! Going here was a mistake that I'll never make again. Service was so slow and bad we left a 5 on the table for our drinks and left before the food came. 2 tables that came in after us had their food before our order was taken and had their food eaten before we gave up and left. We stumbled upon Trailside after going to a circus in a nearby town. I saw on Yelp a few of my yelping peeps had visited and gave solid opinions on the establishment. I think it's really cool the restaurant has a great view of the river and is right off of the great Allegheny Passage if you are passing through on a hike or biking adventure. We snagged a booth in the dining area. I don't recall a hostess so it was a little confusing on what to do upon arrival. However, when we sat down we were greeted quickly by a very attentive waitress who swiftly provided the kids with kid menu's and crayons to doodle with. She took our drink order and let us to review the menu. Most of the menu seemed standard bar fare. They do offer some dinner style entrees besides your typical sandwich, wings, pizza, and burgers. The kids menu was a nice touch but they do not offer kids style drinks. We don't usually drink soda, and never give it to the kids, but they don't offer alternatives. We asked for milk, and they only had chocolate. And for juice they only had Pineapple. I find this incredibly odd for a full service restaurant (that serves Mac n Cheese???) with a full service bar (that serves mixed drinks???) not to have several juices and regular milk. Well soda it was then... Meh. Back to the menu, I decided on a build your own burger. They offer pre-fixed "gourmet style burgers", but let me be clear in my definition of a place that sells pre-fixed gourmet style burgers, you need to be capable of cooking a burger to the patrons requested temperature. I requested a mid-rare to be told that they will not cook it that way. It will be cooked well done and that's it. When paying $10-$12 for a burger I do expect a better quality than that I would get at a fast food restaurant. I fear if they can't cook a burger to order how do they serve steaks??? Also disappointed when I inquired with the waitress about their chili. She was clueless. I asked if it was spicy. She said she didn't know. I said you never tried it? She said she didn't like beans. I said no one ever told you what they thought of it? The cook, other patrons, other employees, the owner?! Nope. I passed. Opted for a Carolina style slaw as my side, made with vinegar and not mayo. We didn't wait too long for the food which was nice. My husband ordered some wings to split with his son and they both liked them. Our food came out and one thing that stood out was my step-daughters hot dog. She got the hot dog and fries kids option. The dog was a big one, not your regular size, maybe a ¼ pound and the casing was, well, wrinkled. As an adult this probably isn't a big deal at all. As a picky kid this was a waste of money. She refused to eat the dog because it was wrinkly and looked old. I of course was frustrated because I am more of the just eat it, but you know kids. Anyhow I wouldn't recommend this meal for most kids. They are too picky. My burger was ok. Nothing fabulous, a little bland but the veggie toppings were fresh and crisp and the brioche bun was very light and soft. My bigger disappointment came with the slaw. It was really sweet. I had to dump a small cup of grainy mustard on it to cut the sweetness so I could eat it. Overall, it wasn't the best meal but I did like the restaurant. They have TV's in the dining room where we were able to watch the Pens playoff game and the place was clean and orderly. After having fun at the circus down the street my wife and our two kids were starving and needed some dinner. Carrie found this place on Yelp and from looking at the good reviews and pictures we decided to try them out and I'm so glad that we did. We walked in and it was busy. It was dinner time, the Kentucky Derby was about to start, and the Pens were about to start their playoff game. We did manage to find a table for 4 and it was in front of a TV so that was nice. We sat down and our waitress came over to greet us. She was really nice and helpful. She brought over crayons and a paper for the kids to doodle on and they had a kids menu on them too. Carrie and I got a beer and the kid's ordered some soda. We were in the mood for burgers and their burgers looked good. My son wanted some wings so I split a order of 5 BBQ wings with him. He also got some chicken tenders and fries. My daughter (who is very picky) got a hotdog and fries. The wings came out quickly and they were really good. The kid's hot dog was big so I cut it up for my daughter and she ate some fries. My son had no problem eating his food and he liked it. The fries were good but there was no seasoning on them. That's good for kids but the fries that I eventually ordered were the same thing. I wish they were better seasoned. Carrie ordered a burger that she made her own and I ordered the bacon burger with Pepper Jack cheese. We were disappointed to hear that their burgers were cooked the same way. You couldn't get it medium or medium rare. The burgers were still good because the dressing around the meat was spot on. The meat still it was a little dry but we still enjoyed the burger. I might have given this place 5 starts if the meat was better. So we got to watch the Kentucky Derby and the first period of the Pens game while dining here. It was a very nice atmosphere and we had a good time with the kids. The dining area that we were in eventually got too crowded when they combined some tables together for a bigger group. We were a little squished at the end there. Overall it's a nice bar/restaurant and if we lived closer we would be back. read more

Very disappointed! Have dined at this restaurant after a great day on the GAP Trail a few times. It was always good. Not so this time. Service was chaotic at best, food was overcooked and on exiting my wife and I had to endure some off colored remarks from some of the kitchen help who were sitting in front of the restaurant! We are in town to visit. After riding along the river for 1+ hour, we decided to go in for a break. Location is quite convenient. It's right by West Newton Station along the trail. The server was so attentive and friendly. We shared the pretzels, hot wings, a sandwich. Maybe my 8 year old has a great appetite, the kid's size Mac n cheese is not enough for him. I am writing this review to reply to the erroneous and egregious review left by Sandy B. I was in the Trailside and saw this entire interaction from start to finish. Any claim regarding the salad that was ordered would be impossible to substantiate for the owner, considering the patron ate 99% of it before complaining. If the salad was so terrible and the produce was so bad, why not send it back before devouring the majority of it? Then, when the husband re-entered the restaurant, he was greeted cordially by the owner. In fact, the owner extended his hand, but the whining brat refused to shake it. Instead of having a conversation as a normal, grown adult man would, the husband made a scene. He raised his voice and made threats so loudly that the majority of the people in the area stopped what they were doing to watch. Then, the cowardly troll took out his phone and attempted to record the owner failing to submit to his threats. He repeatedly threatened to destroy the restaurant and post negative reviews on every possible platform. It was only after threats were made that the owner very politely escorted this petulant man-child off the premises. My only guess is that you go from restaurant to restaurant seeking a free meal and throwing a hissy fit when you don't get one. My experience, food, and drinks at the Trailside were a delight. Stopped here today for lunch while biking and really liked the place. We were lucky to get the last spot on the deck. Hubby had the chicken salad and I had the steak salad which were very good and filling but they were a little pricey. The cornbread with the honey butter was delicious and we also really enjoyed our strawberry & raspberry daiquiris. Also our server was very attentive and so friendly. Very disappointing. We stopped here for dinner while biking on the Gap Trail. The place was crowded but we were seated quickly. I ordered the pear and pecan salad and added a piece of honey bourbon glazed salmon. Although the salad is described as "greens" mine was on iceberg lettuce which would not have been an issue had it have been fresh. Much of the lettuce was wilted and brown with a few actually slimy looking forcing me to pick out pieces and set them to one side of the plate. When the waitress came over to ask how our meal was I showed her the pieces of bad lettuce and she apologized and agreed they were bad. Shortly thereafter she returned with a man who asked what the problem was. Not knowing who he was I did not answer until he identified himself as the owner. When I showed him the problem mentioning that the salmon was fine but that I could not eat much of the salad he pointed to a pecan and said, "that's an almond, a nut". I said I was aware that it was a nut and was eating the nuts and popped it in my mouth. Much of the lettuce I reiterated was inedible however and I would never serve it to a guest. At that point he just walked away. Now my husband and I both felt that he might and should make it right by either replacing the salad or removing it from the bill. Instead we were disappointed and angry when we received the bill to see that nothing was done. We thanked the waitress when leaving and I asked her to relay the message to the owner that we would not be back, that we would tell our friends and that we would be writing this scathing review. My husband actually returned to the restaurant after we left to talk to the owner and was escorted from the premises. Nice way to treat your customers! I would like to respond to Peter K. who accused my husband and I of making a scene at the Trailside. I did not eat 99% of the meal as was stated before I complained about the meal. In fact, I did not complain or ask to see the manager. I just brought it to the waitress' attention (who by the way was very nice and understanding) when she asked if everything was ok and she brought the owner over to our table. When he came over he never acknowledged that the lettuce was brown only pointing to a nut that I never said was lettuce. He never apologized, just walked away. Finally, I did not get a free meal; the entire meal was paid for in full including a tip because the waitress did a good job. Bad business practice when there is a waiting list but there is an empty table reserved for owners??

I ate a late lunch here after about 16 miles of biking. So my review might be slightly biased because I was famished. This diner features all american foods and a large selection of beers. I had the Jacko traveler with cinnamon sugar on the rim and the fish and chips basket. My boyfriend had the sriracha steak wrap. I thought the fish was really flakey and delicious. The fries were thick and the coleslaw went very well with the fish. My companion was not a huge fan of the sriracha steak wrap but sometimes that happens when you adventure into sriracha dishes. This place hit the spot except for the long wait for our food. It took over 45 minutes to get our meal which I thought was quite long considering our order. So if you want a filling meal come here but be prepared to wait. Oh and I forgot to mention half of the menu is off limits until 5pm for dinner. So don't come for lunch if you want pizza or pasta. read more

Went for dinner and it was busy but we decided to wait. The hostess told us that it would be awhile but if we could find a seat in the bar area w could do that. We told her first available was fine. We stood and waited for about 5 min when 2 men walked in that the hostess obviously knew and about a min later she came over and told them that there were 2 seats at the bar. A table opened in the bar area so we grabbed the table. A man walked over and rudely asked if the hostess had sat us and we said no. The man said well then you can't sit here. What ever happened to customer service??? So I guess if you want to be treated rudely and be skipped while waiting for a table this is the place to go #itpaystoknowsomeone. Management comes before customers. They have their front and center reserved parking as well as their special table even if the place is packed, only management can sit at that table. The food dishes are prepared inconsistently and the service is also slow. The place is nice but that's about it. Used to visit the Trailside frequently but Rod and Karen do not value their customers as they should. They have gone down hill. read more

Very rude manager. For the passed 6 months or so I have been coming to this restaurant with my group of friends for trivia night and honestly had a great time. This week, 2 members of our group did not order any food besides water that night, but both have previously ordered food in past nights. Recently, the manager came up to our group and started yelling at us. He basically said how a group of our size (7) did not generate enough money in total and caused people to walk out because we took up space. Truthfully, we made room at 1 table (since we were assigned 2) so we did not have to take up 2 booths. He claims we were not spending enough money but have been consistently coming and eating food each week. Yes, I understand from a business perspective that the restaurant does need to make enough money to be able to pay the trivia people to come each week. There is also nowhere in the restaurant that states you have to spend a certain amount. This was the 1st time he has come to talk to us and he was incredibly rude and doesn't make any of us want to eat there every again. read more

Best mild buffalo sauce on the whole planet! If you're looking for a sandwich, get a pulled pork. It's AMAZING. White pizza is to die for here. Servers are friendly and make sure your experience is good. Even during any rush, they are all on point. Bartenders are nice and make great mixed drinks. Getting a side with your food? Get the trailside chips or Mac n cheese. The absolute best. 20 tsp system is out of this world. Ice cold beer and a HUGE selection. Regardless of why you're stopping or what you're getting, you will not regret it! It can get busy but totally worth the wait. read more

LOCATION: Were were staying at the Yough Motel, not a far walk away, although if you know it'll be dark on your way back to the motel, bring a flashlight - phone flashlight was a bit weak for the darkness. FOOD: I had a burger with a couple of hard ciders. I added the house smoked bacon and OMG that made the burger FANTASTIC! My friend and the beef brisket. We were again VERY HAPPY with the food. First off...teach the fry cook to have the oil at 350 degrees. Fries came out brown but soggy oil soaked and limp. 3 orders of fish and 3 orders of fries. My fish was RAW in the middle because the oil in the fryer got too cold. Totally grossed me out and I did not even want to eat. Ate my cole slaw only. Told the waitress my fish was raw in the middle and did not want anything else. She never took it off the bill. Not worth the trip. read more

I've been here several times and have never had good service. They definitely don't have enough servers nor cooks to keep up in a timely manner. If you want to sit out on the deck for a good 2-3 hours and you're in a hurry or hungry it's a nice deck overlooking the trail access. The food is ok, nothing impressive or great. Very overpriced for the quality presented. $12 chicken sandwich wasn't a breast, just a preformed patty. You can literally get a better quality chicken patty for $3 at McDonald's. No more wing night. No pickles served with sandwiches as advertised on the menu. The steak and cheese was listed as including mushrooms, no mushrooms were on it. Charge for all dipping sauces (BBQ, Ranch, etc). My first visit was very pleasant and the food was great. It was a nice break from a long day on the Great Allegheny Passage Trail. My second visit was less than stellar. I was seated in the bar area, served an ice tea and promptly forgotten about. I had to remind my waitress I was there. Having a limited amount of time before needing to get back on the trail for my ride home I was disappointed at not being able to stay for a meal and the lack of attention. My third visit was much better again. I arrived mid-afternoon and was seated and served well. Best Quesadilla in the area. It's is stuffed with chicken, 2 cheeses, spinach and mushrooms with a crispy quesadilla. One food you will crave.
