Friday, the 13th was not an unlucky day in March. It was a great day at the Schoolhouse Tavern. We arrived at 5:00 and anxious to try another beer battered fish dinner. The parking lot was packed. We took this a a good omen. With no reservations, we walked in and were lucky to get a nice table in the main dining area. Our server, Sydney, soon arrived to take our drink orders and beer battered fish sandwiches for dinner. Soon our platters were delivered along with fries and coleslaw. As you may see from the photograph of our dinner plate, the fish is huge. But, more important is that it was so tasty. We highly recommend this restaurant for their Lenten beer battered fish sandwich. You gotta try this asap and ask for server Sydney. read more

We stopped in with friends after a funeral service.we all just ordered drinks and beer. Service was on the ball and on top of getting us refills. Apparently they have some really good Bloody Mary's. I haven been here since it was Zachels and was pleasantly surprised, the remodel is really nice. I ordered a steak salad, it was delicious and plentiful. I opted to add fries for an additional $1. They use real steak cooked to your liking (not chipped), it comes with egg, tomato, cucumber, kalamata olives, cheese and more. The fish is breaded and comes with fries it was a hardy piece of cod and didn't include tail. Our server (Laura) was fast, friendly and efficient. I really want to like this place. I like the atmosphere. They have a good menu, good selection. The food is decent. The first time I went, we waited over 30 minutes for our food. Seemed like a long time, but it was fine. It was just an off night, right? We went again tonight. This time we waited an hour for our food. This isn't a fine dining establishment. It's pizza, salads, sandwiches, appetizers. Plus, we reserved a table online from their website and there was no reservation when we got there. Not sure we will be returning. Tried again.....ordered one of the Taco Tuesday boxes. It was to include 5 tacos and chips and queso. Between the 5 tacos there was enough meat to fill 2. My husband and I have just recently discovered the SchoolHouse Tavern, and its now one of our favorites. The ambiance of the restaurant is unique and unlike other chain restaurants, which gives it its own personal flair. They do offer an array of craft beer, cider, and wine. The food has always been freshly prepared and we've had no issues with it in the several visits we've made here. The cocktails could be a little better. They offer unique cocktails during Halloween, and they weren't too impressive taste-wise. there is a bar area separated from a large dining room, so this place is both family friendly and accommodating for an older crowd. It's definitely worth a visit for the family or couple who are looking for a unique place for food and drinks. read more

This was my first visit to Schoolhouse Tavern after the old Zackle's changed hands. Wow they did a great job revamping the place. When it was Zackle's it was beyond a dump. Last time I ate there was over 2 years ago and there were space heaters all through the bar because cold air was pouring in from the windows and the walls. The remodel looks great, but like most places that spend some money for well needed renovations the food costs reflected it. We went for a late lunch and they did not have their dining room side open so we had to sit in the bar area. Luckily they have a few booths in there. They offer a few pescatarian meals. I was checking out the fish sandwich but ultimately I just wanted some fish no bun. They have a fish dish entitled "fish on a dish", but they would not cook it any way other than deep frying. My only other option was a salmon dinner or crab cakes. Crab cakes tend to be suspect in PA let alone in this tiny little town in the middle of nowhere. I went with the Salmon. It came with veggie of the day, green beans, a Parmesan risotto, and grilled salmon fillet. My BFF opted for a salmon Caesar salad. Our server was friendly enough. My friend's infant daughter was with us and since she's about the cutest thing in the world we tended to get whatever we asked for quickly followed by a bunch of ooo's and awe's. Our food was delivered within an appropriate amount of time. I have to admit I was a tad disappointed in my meal especially for the higher price tag. It was about $16.00, when I felt it should be more in line with about the 12-13 dollar range. The salmon tasted good, but it was overcooked. The beans were two different colors. Check my pic! Half of them looked like they were fresh and the other half looked canned, and tasted that way. The risotto, to my surprise was probably the star of the dish, and I'm not a huge risotto fan so that's to say how average I felt this meal was. My friend was not happy about her salad. They serve the Caesar salad using the full leaf of romaine and it looked like they grilled the romaine lettuce as it was wilted on the end. I didn't order this so I didn't read the description, but I think she missed it when she read it cause I don't think it was what she wanted, especially considering she basically only ate the salmon. The salmon portion on the salad was identical to my portion which confused me since her salad was probably $4.00 cheaper than my salmon dinner. Expensive canned beans and rice I guess. As I mentioned before the dining room was closed forcing us to sit in the bar, which isn't a big deal to me but we had a baby and they have a jukebox that seemed to be turned up all the way. We could hardly hear each other from across the table and I was worried for my poor little niece's (I'm her faux Auntie) ears. Overkill for 2:30 PM on a Saturday. All in all I would come back here, but I would try something else next time. I saw they have specials throughout the week. They offer $1.00 beef and $2.00 fish tacos on Tuesdays! While home visiting my family, they told me that we were going to a newer restaurant in the building that Fat Zach's used to be in. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely loved Fat Zach's, especially during Lent, but I wasn't sure about going there with a party of 8. When we got there, I was completely wrong and taken back. Walking in you see right away that this building had a makeover of epic proportions; it looked amazing. But that's where the greatness ended and mediocrity set in. We waited over five minutes, once we were seated, for a waitress to come by and say that she'd be right back to get our drinks...5 more minutes go by and she finally came back. Granted, we were a party of 8, so I understand that it may take our waitress a little time to get things together for us, but she already had 3 other tables. That right there screams out poor management and takes some of the blame away from our waitress. The menu boasts that they have the same fish sandwich as when it was Fat Zach's and I knew right then that I was getting it. I was thrilled! We got our drinks, ordered apps and our food and waited. As I looked around, I saw that our waitress kept getting more tables as her previous ones left. We were basically left unattended and had to seek her out for refills. Our apps came and they were great! The zucchini was great and the meatballs were loved by our three kids, and the adults. Our food came by shortly after and I was left staring at a burnt fish sandwich that looked nothing like Zach's fish...it looked like two filet o fish merged together. I didn't even have a chance to complain because once she dropped the food off, she was gone. I finally flagged her down and she looked and my sandwich and said no, it shouldn't look like that. I wanted to ask her why she brought it to me then, but I didn't. She had a new one brought out and while it was cooked properly, it was far from Zach's. Everyone else at the table enjoyed their food and the pizza that we got for the kids was stellar. Burgers and pizza seemed the way to go from others at my table; even the waitress reluctantly agreed. All in all, Schoolhouse Tavern came up short, especially boasting a fish sandwich that was far from Fat Zach's. Not sure when I'll be back, but next time I'm in PA I'll give them another shot and update my review. read more

I want to love this place but every visit leaves me underwhelmed. The food is just ok. The service is horrible. Every time I'm there they are out of beer or mixer or booze that someone in my party orders. (Truth be told last time our waitress was so miserable and lazy I think she just didn't want to go downstairs)The vibe can be right but it also gets so crowded and chaotic and the space just isn't set for that(mainly talking to the live music indoors). I know they've had some growing pains so when it gets tossed into the mix of places to go I'm game but usually only for a drink or two. My mother and I ate here on Mother's Day. We did make a reservation, the table was ready as soon as we walked in. They had a super cute Mother's Day menu with an adequate number of options. Prices and food portions were good. The food itself was amazing; I had salmon filet and my mom had crab cakes. Staff were friendly. I also liked the free popcorn as an appetizer! Advertisement showed that on weekend nights there are live bands, which are generally not an interest of mine because usually the music is too loud and you can't talk to anyone at your table. The hostess was very nice, the waitress was ok. The decor was nice but some things were a bit off. such as holes in the ceiling; where what looked like speakers may be going in so maybe they are doing some updates? The big pretzel app was pretty good but not $12 good. I got a burger that was supposed to be well but definitely wasn't and really had no seasoning. I got mac and cheese as a side and though it tasted pretty good it was noodles with cheese dumped on top and some noodles were hard. It seemed thrown together. The noise level was very high, mostly because of a table in the back corner that clearly had way too much to drink. Even when myself and another table complained we were both told " I guess their having fun". That would have been ok had it been maybe after 9pm but it was about 7:30 and there were still a good amount of kids that really shouldn't have been hearing them. This place is a gem, take this 4 star as a high praise as I rarely give 5 stars. We pulled into the parking lot thinking it was a bar area in a small town not sure if it's what we were looking for but decided to walk inside anyway to a huge wow factor. Like kid on Christmas surprise. The inside was the so nice that made for an amazing family dinner/ date night. The service was great and food was filling and worth every penny. So let me start by saying this place is a 100 times better than Zackels was a couple years ago. This place is new, fresh, and has a cozy feel to it. Staff is friendly and the owner has been in there asking people how they are doing every time I have been in there. All sounds good right? So why does it get 3 stars? Their kitchen itself is a complete disaster. After more than 10 visits, not a single time my order has been right or in a timely manner. The majority for the food is always good, but it's always something. Part of the order is missing, or everything is great except 1 thing is burnt to a crisp, or one item is completely wrong, or part of your order was "given to the wrong table," somethings cold, or it has just taken forever and a day for your order to come. Last few times it took over an hour for the food to come so we tried take out. They said 30 minuets each time. I ended up waiting an additional 45 minuets when I got there, twice in a row! I get they are new and busy, but eventually it becomes an excuse as a good customer you don't want to here. I live close and will continue to patronize this business.. I just hope they can pull it together and stick around for a while. A customer shouldn't have to feel like they are rolling the dice as to the quality that their food will be. That's called "fast food!" I have heard many of the people in town saying the same things. If they are going to be successful, these bad experiences (although little inconveniences) will start to add up on your customer base and slowly you will see your business drop off.... good luck. School House Tavern is now what was formally known as Zackel's and is under new ownership. I heard from a few people that the place is 100 times better now, so I stopped in here with my mom for a late lunch. I have to say that you can immediately tell from the outside that the place has improved, even if only cosmetically. The parking lot, which is partly on a hill, is the only downfall outside. For those of you familiar with Zackel's, you would hardly recognize the place now. It is very updated - and the bar and dining areas are switched. Everything looks very modern and classy...huge improvement. We grabbed a booth in the bar, and were waited on promptly. The special was $1.00 hard or soft tacos. We both opted for a house salad, drinks, and 3 tacos. We got both hard and soft shell, just to try them both, but I have to say that - as usual - I preferred the soft shell. Our salads were a nice size as well, although they came stuffed in a small bowl. My mom dumped hers out onto a plate, which served the poor stuffed salad some justice, because then you were able to see how much you actually got, which was significant for a house salad. It included tomatoes, olives, cucumbers and mixed greens - not all iceburg lettuce, which I don't care for. I had the house ranch dressing and it was very good. Service was good, our waitress was friendly and efficient. One of the owners also stopped over to see if we needed anything. Overall, it was a nice lunch and I would definitely return. read more
