We sat outside in what they call the "garden room." The ambience and lighting were cozy and pleasant, and it was comfortably warm despite the 30°F temperature. Unfortunately, there was a strong cold draft at floor level, leaving our feet uncomfortably cold throughout the meal. The hostess was sweet and greeted us with a smile. The food service was unremarkable. Our waiter was not particularly friendly nor personable. The drinks were a weak start. The red sangria was poor. The bourbon cocktail was an odd mix of bourbon, apple cider, and other elements--an awkward, Frankenstein-style whiskey sour that simply didn't work. Worst of all, both drinks were served in thin plastic cups, which immediately cheapened the entire experience. I ordered the falafel sandwich and specifically requested a toasted bun. It arrived not just room temperature, but cold. I sent it back, and it returned burning hot... the bottom soggy... literally too hot to pick up... with no browning or color change, clearly microwaved. Microwaving is not toasting. At that point, the sandwich was inedible. I removed the bun entirely and ate just the falafel, which was dry and largely tasteless. At this point I knew coming back to this restaurant was a mistake. Food timing was another issue. The dishes took roughly 45 minutes to arrive after the drinks, possibly longer. We were all getting annoyed and what started out well when we first walked in turned negative. I wasn't impressed on my first visit years ago... and this second visit confirmed it. I have heard nothing but praises about this place from friends, but my experience was hit and miss. A cute spot on the outskirts of the city. There is no parking, so be prepared to circle the block a few times and parallel park. At the table we had ordered 2 different beers on tap and both were skunked. After sending it back for a 2nd time, we just switched to bottles. I had wanted to order one of their burgers, but after a few minutes in the back, our waitress returned to tell us that it was not available. I switched my order to the Crab Po Boy. Crab meat, pickled red onions, lettuce and a house made old bay aioli on long roll. There was more meat than expected, the sauce was really good, and the roll was fresh. This also came with fries and the waitress had asked if I wanted to upgrade my fries and gave some options. I love all things truffle, so when I heard that I was sold. When the meal came out, I questioned if she remembered that I had ordered the truffle fries. She said yea, well they are normal fries and we just toss them in a truffle oil. They were ok. In the pile, fries on top barely had any truffle flavor - this is why I had questioned if my order was correct. Once I got down to the bottom of the pile, the fries down there were sitting in the oil remnants and they had a really good flavor to them. While the food was good, to me the spot was hit and miss. Well as we're driving home past Allentown, our Yelp app suggested Union & Finch. It was a good recommendation as the food and service were wonderful. Initially we were concerned as no one was in the place. The restaurant was clean, service was hospitable and they had some hip blues playing. Come to find out, we were the early birds this day and when we left the place was bustling. For lunch we split the Union Burger w/ fries and had an appetizer of fried cheese curds topped with a honey balsamic and nuts. Freaking delicious and my first bite of that burger made me wish I hadn't split with the wife. They had a nice selection of beer and drinks although we didn't partake. We stopped in for brunch at this adorable neighborhood spot and overall had a great experience, with a few hiccups. Parking was a little tricky, it's on a narrow residential street, so be prepared to circle a bit or walk a little. We arrived right before they opened and there was already a line forming, which we took as a good sign (and it was!). The restaurant itself is super cute inside--charming decor and a cozy vibe. That said, it gets really loud. The food was definitely a highlight! I had the Waffles Foster and it was absolutely delicious--crispy, buttery, and perfectly sweet. First time customer. Most likely it was the busiest time to go. Sunday brunch around 1 PM. I can say that we were seated promptly and the service was excellent! The indoor bar/restaurant has great lighting and a very comfortable, inviting atmosphere. It got very crowded minutes after we were seated make it a challenging to hear conversation across the table. Our meals came out quickly and for the most part were very good. My shrimp and grits Benedict was tasty but served with burnt toast and a runny poached egg. Well, both my wife and I are trying to understand the hype. We've been here twice and the only things Union does decently is the greeting and atmosphere. We've found all the staff to be friendly and accommodating but they also didn't know the menu nor could answer basic food questions. When we asked for lemon with water he brought the tiniest wedge that could not even produce juice. We looked at each other and then looked around to see if we were being punked. The food, both times, was well below par. The steak wedge salad, for instance, had a whole piece of overcooked bacon, whole tomatoes and absolutely drenched in dressing. I had to do surgery to make sense of it all. The steak came cold, old, and moved from well done to medium depending on which piece you ate. None of it was easily chewed and I could only stomach half of it. The worst part is that they didn't even know to cut the steak on the bias. That's cooking 101. Her fettuccine pesto also came cold, little to no seasoning, and it looked so tried as if someone rejected it an hour ago and then they brought it to us. Our first experience wasn't much better but this time was just bad. I don't want to sound whiny (I probably already do) so I'll spare you the details about our first experience. Perhaps I just expected more from union and Finch because of how well they're reviewed and because of how well they are loved by the community. Posted tonight from Union and Finch in Allentown. I had heard for a long time that their burger was excellent there and I was in the mood for a burger so it felt like a no brainer. My bartender/server (sat at the bar) was very friendly as was any other staff (and I assume the owner or manager) that I spoke with at all. Started with a toasted pecan old fashioned that had a nice flavor to it. Enjoyed that thoroughly. For their Union Burger which was Pat LaFrieda beef with a red onion marmalade, bacon, and sweet pickles. This does not come with cheese so I added it. The beef/bacon/roll quality were all quite good. The fries were crisp and seasoned with salt. The burger was 2 temps over what I asked for, which is always a tough thing for me to get past. This made it so a lot of the juices were cooked out of it, and being someone who knows LaFrieda beef very well, it didn't do it justice because of that. The onions were also a bit confusing to me. They still tasted perfectly fine, but the wording on the menu led me to believe they would be cooked down over a long period and be super tender. These weren't that. All in all this burger definitely Didn't Suck, but they missed on a few key things that really would have made it excellent. read more

I met two girlfriends for lunch at Union and Finch on Thursday (6/4)upon looking at the reviews and the menu. Everything looked and sounded delicious. We waited a few minutes more than I am used to to be seated especially because there were no other parties waiting before us. The person that seated us apologized and stated she would also be our server. The place was not super crowded but it looked like it had been prior to us getting there. People were finishing their lunch and/or waiting or paying for the check. The server described the specials and some of the items in the menu so eloquently that we could not decide what to order. It all sounded delicious. I ordered the hamburger special. It came with a beer or milkshake. I opted for the strawberry milkshake. My girlfriend ordered the chicken and waffles and my other girlfriend order the chicken sandwich with arugula, etc. My hamburger special came in a pita bread with a semi spicy sauce, arugula. It was dressed in a "falafel" style. It was okay. I wish I would've listened to the description a little better. If I were to go back there, I'd probably order something else. My girlfriend liked her chicken sandwich and fries. The chicken and waffles was plentiful. It must've been good because she ate most of it and what she didn't, she bagged. I also bagged my half of my hamburger special. The milkshake was delicious. The restaurant is very comfortable and the decor is very pleasing to the eye. We had a couple of substitutions to menu items which were accommodated without any reluctance. Food was excellent. I had crab cake eggs Benedict, there were crepes ordered, omelets, waffles. Getting the last two seats at the bar my gf and I perused the menu quickly and both settled on splitting the Roadside burger. Double bacon cheeseburger with two fried patties, lettuce, tomato, Pecanwood smoked bacon, pickles and yellow American cheese on a Marty's sesame seed bun. This burger is packing a lot of juice. Served with fries. The burger had the perfect grilled flavor to it and I would easily get this burger on the regular if I lived closer to Allentown. I also think the addition of the Pecanwood Bacon complements this burger spectacularly. Fries were above average. Odd fact, you cannot specify how you would like your burger cooked here. I thought I was stuck in an episode of Monty Python as my gf stated we would like it medium well and the bartender said I am sorry, but we cannot accommodate cooking preferences as we can only cook the roadside burger medium well. She said it dead pan as can be and I guess didn't really listen when we said that is how we wanted it cooked, what do I know, I am just a tourist smh. We had a combination of flavors of wings and the burrata appetizers, all of which were delicious. For dinner, we had burgers with fries and a spectacular chicken dish that was so tender. It came off the bones with your fork and was on a bed of rice with pine nuts that sat on a pita. The flavors and seasonings were truly incredible. We love to eat out and can say this was the best chicken fish we have ever ordered. The burgers were easily one of the best burgers we've ever had. For dessert we had cheesecake with raspberry sauce and chocolate cake-highly recommend both of those as well! Walking into the restaurant, the front area was noticeably cramped with waiting guests, and seating for those waiting was very limited. The only option was to leave our name with the hostess, meaning we had to remain inside if we wanted to hear it called. The hostess, while not outright rude, seemed visibly unhappy. We were quoted a 10-15 minute wait, but ultimately ended up waiting closer to 30-35 minutes. During our wait, my partner found a seat after standing for some time. Shortly after, a woman entered carrying several bags and asked to speak with the owner or manager about setting up flyers. The two then proceeded to crowd my partner, setting up materials around them on the surrounding seats and table. Neither acknowledged my partner's presence until they got up, visibly uncomfortable. Instead of offering an apology, the owner/manager simply laughed and said, "Yeah, I know you just sat down." The woman also laughed and continued setting up. Ironically, she sat down in the same seat my partner left after 5 minutes of setting up and ended up waiting only 10 minutes for a table--far less time than we did. Once seated, we were hopeful given that the menu looked appetizing. Our server, while a little slow to check on us, was kind and professional--one of the only bright spots in our experience. We ordered two appetizers: the crab dip (which was delicious) and the Nashville hot chicken tender poutine, requested without pickles. Our server assured us this would be no problem. However, when the dish arrived, it was covered in pickles. We politely informed the food runner, who seemed visibly annoyed as she took the plate back. Less than five minutes later, the dish returned--clearly the same plate with most of the pickles simply removed. The fries still tasted of pickle juice, and when we lifted the chicken, we found pickles still underneath. We set it aside and focused on the crab dip. When our server returned to check on us, we explained what happened. We were understanding about the kitchen being backed up but disappointed that the dish wasn't remade properly. She offered to box it up, but we explained that we wouldn't eat it with the pickle flavor still present. She apologized and informed us that the restaurant's policy didn't allow her to remove it from the bill. We accepted this, but it felt unfair that we were charged for a dish that was incorrectly prepared twice and left untouched. It honestly made the establishment seem money-hungry, and gave us a bad impression of the owner/manager. For entrées, I ordered the chicken and waffles. The waffle was cold and hard, and it was only half of a waffle rather than a full serving. I'd rate it a 1/5. My partner ordered the steak frites with arugula, fries, and au poivre sauce (which had a $3 upcharge). The dish arrived piled onto a plate that seemed too small, with about two-thirds of it consisting of fries. The arugula wasn't dressed with oil or lemon, and the steak was missing the sauce entirely. It took another seven minutes after the food arrived for our server to bring the sauce, although she didn't acknowledge or apologize for us having received our food without it. She just stated the sauce was really good. Overall, the restaurant had a charming atmosphere, but the experience was disappointing. The only consistently positive aspect was our server, who remained kind and professional despite the circumstances. Unfortunately, the management came across as indifferent and, frankly, dismissive--particularly in how my partner was treated while waiting and in how they handled the issue with our food. The owner/manager repeatedly walked past our table, making eye contact, but never once checked in or offered any acknowledgment of the earlier situation. With so many dining options available, a restaurant needs more than just good aesthetics--it needs quality service and accountability. The food was also pricier than it should have been given the quality and the frequent errors. I've had better and cheaper food at a diner. Based on this visit, I wouldn't return. read more

We also got a beer flight and the selection was definitely enough to mix and match. The wings and Mac n Cheese were amazing; sadly the main course didn't survive the picture taking process lmao!! My family was in Allentown, PA for the holidays and I came across Union and Finch in my research. We had a wonderful time at Union and Finch. It was very easy to make a reservation through OpenTable the day of which was a Saturday afternoon at 12:45pm. For seating, you can choose indoor or their outdoor sunroom which is enclosed and heated. We chose indoor. There are plenty of tables and were seated quickly. There is a parking lot right behind the restaurant. We had 6 Bourbon BBQ wings to start. The sauce was really tasty. I had The West End which had sausage, egg and american cheese on a pearl sugar Belgian waffle and served with French fries. The pearl sugar Belgian waffle was amazing and I've never had this combination before. I really enjoyed every bite. It wasn't over sweetened. Other people in my group had the Southern Breakfast, grilled chicken sandwich, fried green tomato B.L.T, and savory crepes. Everyone enjoyed their food so much. The portions were very generous. Service was great and checked if we need anything else. Definitely recommend Union and Finch if you are looking for a breakfast or lunch spot.
