Cinnamon Raisin Bread Pudding - $14

Set up: Very easy to make a reservation here. Head to their Resy listing and go from there. We were doing a make shift Thanksgiving dinner and I had no issue getting a table for four the day prior. https://resy.com/cities/allentown-pa/venues/bolete Food: Several things were ordered but I'm going to focus on what I experienced because this is.....my review. To be honest, to my highly untrained palate, I would say each course went a bit in reverse from the one prior. Starting with the Butternut Squash Soup was a great choice. Fantastic bold flavor with a beautiful velvety thick consistency. It would be damn near impossible to improve on that one. Next, on to the Dayboat Scallops. There's a lot going on with this one. You've got some excellent bitterness with the mustard greens & kale that plays nicely off of the three scallops. All three were cooked to perfection and had great flavor. What I didn't care for were the three pork raviolis that are served at the bottom of the dish. Not too much in the flavor department and all three had different consistencies ranging from very firm to one leaking its filling before it was touched soft. Dessert was a meh. Some type of pumpkin something or other (loaf/bread pudding - ? - it's not listed on the online menu) that was definitely on the dry side. 100% not worth the $14 charged. Service: A mixed bag. There are only two ciders on the menu and while I ordered the non-extra dry one, I was given and poured the extra dry one that I said I didn't want. It took a solid fifteen minutes to actually get a dessert menu as our server forgot twice that neither she nor "somebody" brought them over. The funny part is that no sooner did she drop them on the table, the manager (owner?) is right behind her asking if we knew what we wanted for dessert. I guess eight seconds is enough time to decide? Was the experience good? Overall, yes, very much so. Compared to the usual pubs, watering holes and corner bars I slither around in, this is rarified air. The other three people with me all thoroughly enjoyed their time at Bolete and the only real complaint from two of them was that the dessert (the same one I had) was dry and lacked flavor. Let me finish with this. I get it. It seems like I'm being a hyper-critical A-Hole and in a way, I am. But to me, at this price point the bar is elevated and if I'm dropping over $400, I'm going to be as picky as I want to be if it's not perfect.

My husband and I went to Bolete for dinner to celebrate life and we had a great experience. I love their take on classic foods and the farm to table experience. Everything seemed very fresh and the customer service was amazing. We will definitely be back to celebrate life again lol.

Brought the family here for Easter. Busy and service was kind of slow, but expected that because it was a holiday. Unique food choices and I had the pea soup followed up with the chicken & waffle. Soup was very good, with some fresh peas in a few of the spoons. The chicken & waffle was okay. More breading than chicken. Waffle was the best part of the meal. I'll be back again as this really is an exceptional restaurant.

My wife and I were out for a special date night at Bolete. The rustic old farmhouse atmosphere is very cool. We were greeted immediately and promptly seated. Our server was phenomenal, great personality, knowledgable about the menu and made some very good recommendations. I had the best grilled octopus I've ever had and I can tell you I've eaten octopus all over this great country. My wife had a pasta dish that came out hot and bursting with the taste of fresh ingredients. We also ordered the bone marrow served with one of the best Italian breads I've ever eaten. Crusty warm bread with a dense well baked center. We finished the evening off with some tasty desserts and espresso. I requested to speak to the chef who did comment to our table. It is rare to have such great meal and have amazing staff. I felt compelled to let the chef, who is the owner with his wife. Bravo! Overall, one of the best hidden secrets in PA.

Great food. Great service. Very attentive servers! Menu changes every so often. The only con is we were on the bar side of the restaurant and it was a bit loud.

The chef made these custom vegan entrees for us. Delicious!

Ask the Community - Bolete Restaurant

Is this place still a BYOB?

    Nope

    Is there a dress code?

We were in jeans and decent tops, and did not feel out of place. Many of the waitresses were in short sleeve tops with ink (this is NOT a negative lol) so it had a cool casual vibe. Classy casual is what I'd call it.

Do they still do oyster happy hours and 1/2 price wines on Friday?

Have not been there on a Friday for Happy Hour in some time.

Do they still make their cauliflower wild mushroom soup?

We do! It is not on the menu right now but always makes a few appearances over the Winter. Please let us know when you make a reservation and we will try and have it for you. Thank you, Erin

Unfortunately, there was a strong cold draft at floor level, leaving our feet uncomfortably cold throughout the meal. The hostess was sweet and greeted us with a smile. The food service was unremarkable. Our waiter was not particularly friendly nor personable. The drinks were a weak start. The red sangria was poor. The bourbon cocktail was an odd mix of bourbon, apple cider, and other elements--an awkward, Frankenstein-style whiskey sour that simply didn't work. Worst of all, both drinks were served in thin plastic cups, which immediately cheapened the entire experience. I ordered the falafel sandwich and specifically requested a toasted bun. It arrived not just room temperature, but cold. I sent it back, and it returned burning hot... the bottom soggy... literally too hot to pick up... with no browning or color change, clearly microwaved. Microwaving is not toasting. At that point, the sandwich was inedible. I removed the bun entirely and ate just the falafel, which was dry and largely tasteless. At this point I knew coming back to this restaurant was a mistake. Food timing was another issue. The dishes took roughly 45 minutes to arrive after the drinks, possibly longer. We were all getting annoyed and what started out well when we first walked in turned negative. I wasn't impressed on my first visit years ago... and this second visit confirmed it. Between the poor drinks, cheap plastic cups, ridiculously long wait (with no explanation nor apology), and careless food execution, there's no reason to return.

We had hoped to sit outside but a family had their kids running wild so we ducked inside. The establishment is one long, eclectic rectangle with a hodgepodge of art and decoration without any noticeable theme or cohesion. They served me a wonderful Reyka martini and we had breakfast for dinner because the dinner offerings didn't leave an impression. My girlfriend had three over-easy eggs with smoked bacon and I had a grilled chicken omelet with gruyere and spinach with a side of potatoes. The omelet was excellent. The potatoes could have been a crispier by they were fresh. My girlfriend enjoyed her dish as well. For a Saturday, it was strange that they had only one server and one cook in the kitchen. With its airy outside patio and spacious interior, we loved the vibe. We were warmly greeted by our server Paige and were seated. Our spicy margaritas had just the right amount of kick! We were off to a great start... We dined on chili and a dish called El Fresco. The El Fresco are marinated seasoned chicken chunks served on a bed of sliced mozzarella and tomatoes. It was so savory and satisfying. The Honey could not stop saying how good the chili was!! I was lucky enough to get a spoonful (or two) before it was all gone! You will not go wrong with either one of these dishes. Paige was nice enough to answer my questions about the Brunch menu and history of the restaurant. She directed me to the wall where an article about the owner Marta was hanging. We then had the pleasure of meeting her when she came by the table to check on us. We're so happy we stopped in. The food and service were top notched. When we're in the area again, we're definitely returning. If we lived in the area I could see us becoming regulars here.
