Excellent food and service, we had reservations for a Thursday night and good thing we had the reservations, they're very popular. I had the steak frites with filet mignon. Hubs had the meatballs (which the server said they only had two left...a friend nabbed the others) and other friends had the moules (mussels) frites and the braised short rib IIRC. The *.frites were the biggest hits. My filet was perfect, Sharon was raving about her mussels being the best she's had in ages. I had a bite of the meatballs, they were ok but people agreed there are better things on their menu. I love that the frites come with a choice of 3 out of about 10 different custom mayos (aiolis for the fancy-schmancy). I tried the curry, sriracha, and a fruity one I can't remember exactly what it was. I liked the fruity one the best and to my surprise, the curry the least (I usually love curry, but the balance was off). The sriracha mayo was too subtle for me, I slather sriracha mayo on my burgers regularly. I have no class. The frites were fresh cut and I enjoyed them but there were far more than I could eat on my plate, and sadly frites don't keep. They have my favorite super sweet Lindemann's framboise lambic on tap; I've only ever had it in bottles before, so that was a treat. My husband thinks I'm crazy to drink it because it is SO SWEET but I love it. So does Sharon, and clearly we're not alone or they wouldn't waste a tap on it :). It's beer for people who hate beer. (I resemble that remark. Maybe hate is a strong word. But in my 30s I realized I'd rather drink a soda than a beer, except for this one.) Desserts sounded good but we were too stuffed to order any. Next time I come, I may try the mussels, or I might just order that steak again. read more

It's another world, stepping into the Trappe Door. It's low, warm lighting, low ceilings and lots of wooden beams. It's in a basement that feels like a pleasant dungeon or a 1500's rogue tavern, you know, the kind in the movies where plots to overturn evil rulers are hatched. It is a unique vibe and after your meal, when emerging back onto the brightly lit street, it's akin to stepping out of a secret place and back into the light of day. The beer selection is impressive. This food is Belgian inspired. Hence the name being derived from a mix of Trappist Monks, trap doors, and a hidden underground enclave. Many of the beers have higher alcohol content, listed on the menu, be advised. The specialty is Moules Frites, mussels prepared in various broths and fries double fried in duck fat served with a flight of your choice of flavored mayonnaise such as wasabi, curry, truffle, sriracha, etc. Very good. Reservations are highly recommended. It was a busy Thursday at 6:30pm and the place was literally packed, even the bar. The two of us were seated in a large, dark, alcove booth fitting for six or perhaps even eight. We had a reservation, so the hostess said, "we may as well fill it" since it was that crowded. Being such, it was five minutes before we were noticed and placed our drink orders, another five before our water arrived and we ordered and about 30 minutes later to get our food. In between we were left to ourselves. The service was not negligent, but it was minimal and not really friendly either. It was a busy night, so we will have grace. But the mussels were delicious. We both had the Provincale, a rich, savory, Mediterranean sauce of tomatoes, garlic and white wine. Bourdain says "never order the mussels", in his Kitchen Confidential book, but here you are safe because they are very popular and the main feature. I've probably said this before and it is worth repeating, they need to up their crusty bread game. The broth is so good and the accompanying bread just doesn't lend itself to bringing the dish to another level, but it could were it better bread. This is a solid and must do restaurant experience when visiting Greenville. It arguably should be the "one" restaurant you must visit in town because of its unique ambiance and unique food & beverage. read more

Upon entering you are in a cozy basement, with tables and booths along the walls. The menu is somewhat limited but the drinks seem robust. Table of 4, we got 3 appetizers and I wasn't impressed by any of them. The baked Brie wasn't gooey enough, the Buffalo oysters had rocks, and the ham/cheese croquet-ehh-- too much mustard and just not worth it. For dinner we got the mussels, the steak and a fish and chips. Every meal is served with a side of fries and 3 options of mayo. The plain mussels were very bland. I was hoping for a deeper richer garlic white wine sauce but it was underwhelming. My friend got the coconut curry mussels and complained that the mussels tasted frozen and weird, but she liked the broth. Another friend complained her steak's pepper sauce was way too strong- I tried it and agreed. Fish and chips seemed fine. Light and Crispy if you're into that. We didn't get dessert. I had a Moscow mule which was decent but also pretty icey. Overall I'd return solely for drinks. I felt underwhelmed by the food, given the expectations and previous reviews. Every time dine at Trappe Door, I immediately feel like I am meeting new friends and have a time. Tonight's meal was pretty special with DinnerGVL and the ambiance of welcomed immediately as you walk in, to meet a table full of new faces. I started with a Straffe Hendrik Quad, which was chefs kiss. It was a yummy treat to start the meal off with and be transported into being in Belgium. Not pictured was the charcuterie board and Brie appetizers that were all split and devoured. What was documented was the roasted duck breast with potatoes and asparagus. The duck was roasted perfectly with the skin, crispy for the texture and seasoned divinely. A really cool spot in downtown Greenville. You head underground to this awesome setting. The croquettes were stellar. Definitely the best thing at the table. Great atmosphere, food and beer choices. The stairs may be a problem for some people, but it's worth it!

When in Greenville, my husband and I had a wonderful meal at The Trappe Door. One of his friends who is a local but spent time in Belgium recommended it to us. I do recommend making a reservation ahead of time, arriving when they open (at 5 PM), or planning to sit at the bar. We started with the Wild mushroom vol-au-vent ($13) appetizer, which was rich and delicious- definitely not your ordinary mushrooms, and I loved the puff pastry. I had the Pan seared salmon ($28) for my entree and loved how the flavors blended together, especially the marinated tomato salad. My husband had the Provencal Mussels, which came with a huge piece of bread on top for soaking (although I wish you could order an extra bread because he needed it). This dish also came with a side of fries. When you order fries here, you get the choice of three creative flavored mayonnaise options. You can opt for ketchup if you're less adventurous. Although our food did take awhile to come out, the service was good and our waiter checked on us multiple times. It was rather busy so as I mentioned earlier, make a reservation and don't be in a hurry. The bar has a huge selection of Belgian and European beers, as well as mixed drinks and some NA options. For parking, there is a surface lot next door and a garage across the street. Parking is thankfully cheap in downtown Greenville (and free after certain hours). read more

If you like Belgian beers, this is your spot!! I've been to Belgium and Trappe Door is as close as I've experienced in the states. The service from Miriam on Sat (5/30) was exceptional; she noticed that a member of our party was celebrating a birthday and brought out a cake with a candle without anyone asking. Beyond the spectacular selection of Belgian beers, they also have a great Moscow Mule. Unfortunately, the food is a bit lacking; my fish and chips were very salty, and the fries were soft and mushy. I had a stellar experience at Trappe Door for my birthday. The vibe is amazingly cool and such a great spot for any kind of event or night out. The food was truly delicious. The Flemish onion soup was delicious. The seafood waterzooi was a bit salty and the shrimp was a little overcooked, but otherwise decent. That stew also appeared to be Americanized since it has more things in it and served with bread which was not the case when I visited Belgium. Visiting Greenville for work and wanted to treat myself to a hearty dinner. I called ahead of time and they had availability for one within 15 mins. I thought they would seat me at the bar but I got a nice seat where I could see all the hustle and bustle. It's a really cool and exclusive-vibes atmosphere, with an extensive beer selection. Ordered the braised short rib and it did not disappoint! The brussels were creamy which I've never experienced before. The short rib and mashed potato were prepared perfectly. I could not finish the plate in one sitting so I took a mini meal to go. If I was in the mood to eat fries I definitely would have tried the fish and chips! Trappe Door warning: Took my wife and daughter here. Had been before and had good experience. However, my daughter was served undercooked muscles. She became violently ill the next morning. We had to take her in to receive iv fluids. Contacted the owner who conceited that there was a new cook in the kitchen and there had been several complaints that night. He said he would make things right for us as we incurred medical bills. Now he is refusing to reimburse us for our expenses. Stay away!!!! read more

Our first attempt at eating here without reservations didn't pan out, so we made them 3 weeks in advance. I love the cozy, dark atmosphere of the restaurant. It feels almost like a secret hiding spot. I was enamored with the place, peeking around and had a good laugh with the bathroom decor. Our waitress was friendly and let us take our time deciding on drinks and dinner. My husband went with the fish and chips and I ordered the steak and chips. I was not expecting the amount of perfectly, crispy fries as I was given. My husband tried stealing some under the guise of "you're never going to eat all that!" I said "watch me" and did. I was just sitting next to Paul C, the only 1 star review I can see for this place. Boomerest boomer I ever saw. With two women. Complained about his fries when he had about 3 left on the plate. Still given more fries. Appeared to backfire because he clearly wanted something free so he got one of the people with him to also complain. Apparently the man has never had anything besides Morton's iodized salt in his life. Staff was appropriately apologetic but ol Paul clearly wanted the senior complainer discount so took to yelp while sitting next to me one barstool over. Watched him type it over his shoulder.
