This place has become our favorite pet store in PDX! Even though we live quite a distance from the store we happily drive here because it's the friendliest pet store in town. They offer toys that are not destined for the landfill, and high quality pet food and treats. i started going to Green Dog in 1990 when I first moved to Portland. Christine is the most conscientious pet store owner I've ever known. She constantly checks all the dog food manufacturers to be sure that the food she is selling is the best on the market. I've experienced her taking out any food that decreases the quality of its product. I've also asked her advice many, many times and she is ALWAYS sure to advise me to use caution when starting a new product. She also trains her employees to be as careful. Dogs are the main clientele and they do have quite a bit to take care of them. Grain free, gluten free, meat free but not free for the taking. (insert rim shot) They have dog toys, chews, collars, leashes, treats and even artwork. They have a small cat area up front as well with organic catnip, assorted toys and leashes and scratching items to keep the felines busy. I live with two 18 year old cats and granted they don't move around as quickly as I'm sure they once did, but catnip still works on them. The prices are what you'd expect of a boutique shop, but if you are a person who pampers their pet, then this is a great place for you. Enjoy. read more

I've been a raving fan since they opened. First, their layout is very aesthetically pleasing and organized; some pet stores carry an extensive inventory, but feel dirty and cluttered. The owners, Mike and Christine, are very knowledgeable, I've seen them quoted numerous times in pet related periodicals and websites. As the name implies, their business model focuses on quality products, this isn't PetSmart or (gulp) the grocery store pet aisle. Price points are very competitive. However, even if I notice a like product for less somewhere else, I'll still purchase it here, especially to support a neighborhood business. Green Dog carries an ample selection of pet clothing, but few have the leash hole at the top, so that's the only thing on my wish list. They have a convenient frequent buyer program for most food brands. Parking is relatively easy. Lastly, the staff they employ are A+, some have been there a long time so its probably a great place to work. They are so much more than order takers: they know their customers and product detail. Went to Green Dog a few months ago looking for a new collar for our dog. I've been to at least 7 - 8 pet stores in Portland specifically looking for a collar for our large dog (we wanted a thicker collar) and this has been the only pet store that had a good selection of larger collars. I'm pretty picky and I was looking for a certain kind of collar, and luckily we found one that was on sale - score! The nicer collars are a little more expensive, but they had a nice variety in all price ranges. The store is really clean and large, and it's laid out well. The staff was friendly and accommodating, and even offered to order me a collar that we would like. Overall it was a really good experience and I'll probably go back and buy the matching leash sometime this fall. read more

Our pup has the weirdest and most Portland-ish of allergies: can only eat novel meats (no chicken, beef, fish, non-raw dairy, turkey, etc), otherwise she gets the serious itchies and ear infections. Green Dog has been there every step of the way with dietary suggestions and supplements, and also very open to offering samples when they are available. They stand behind all of the items that they have selected to stock, and work hard to ease my mind when I'm trying something new for my girl in the event it doesn't work well for her. Great variety of specialty foods and unique collars and leashes. I also love that they always have big sizes of dog sweaters and jackets. Big Box stores very seldom have outerwear that fits my 55-pound dog, so I really appreciate that. Big dogs get cold too, damn it! The staff is very helpful and good at recommending products based on your needs. Since it is a small-business specialty store, you can guess that the prices are higher than at other places and their hours of operation are kind of short. Pretty standard boutique pet shop. One of the employees was helpful and friendly. The other was arrogant and lectured me on how to correct my dog when I redirected her from another dog who snapped at her. This shopgirl immediately came around the corner with treats and praise for my dog. I told her that I don't give praise to my dog when she almost gets into a fight. That's when she lectured me about positive reinforcement. That's fine, but I only reinforce behavior that I like. Furthermore, don't tell me how to raise my dog. Would you tell a parent how to raise their kids? The other shop girl was nice and at least asked for my permission before giving my dog treats. There are plenty of boutique pet shops in town. I'll prefer the ones that don't cross my personal boundaries. read more

They carry a good selection of foods and a nice selection of toys and other pet products, such as kennels, raincoats, beds, etc. I have decided to start buying all of my pet food there and as much other pet supplies as I can because I think it is a great business and deserves local support. My friend Sarah who is involved with Lovers Not Fighters Pit Bull Rescue always raves about this place and how nice they are. She had purchased these cool dog beds there that she put in her crates. I went in and found the ones she had bought and purchased one. It's like a mattress with a cover and my puppy adores it. The customer service was great too. Everyone is so nice. I went to this pet store thinking I was going to get a safe recommendation. I was looking into CBD as an additional go to when my old dog's pain medication wasn't always helping enough. I told them he had high levels for his pancreas so needed something low in fat. These dried liver treats were the best for him they indicated. They told me to start out with a full treat in the morning & at night even though he is down to 14.5 pounds. I questioned this, but thought I was getting sound advice. After 4 days, he woke up soon after going to bed with the most severe case of diarrhea I've ever witnessed with a pet. I was carrying him outside repeatedly all night long & he also vomited. He was so sick over the next few days I was afraid I was going to lose him. Of course I took him to my vet and after blood tests, she confirmed it was the liver treats. It is very difficult to get medication down him & I ended up having to drive to a compounding facility in Tualatin over the weekend. It took days for him to recover & he was in so much extra pain because he wasn't eating to get his regular pain med in him. I addressed this episode with the store manager as I'd found out later that dogs should not be given liver treats on a daily basis since they can cause serious side effects in some dogs. She took no responsibility. She defended her employees for their choice of product, said I should have perhaps started out with a lesser amount of CBD (even though I'd addressed that when making the purchase), and did not even address the culprit, though I'd pointed it out to her twice - the dried liver. Employees should not be making recommendations if they do not have full knowledge, and, the attitude of the owner was extremely disappointing. read more

I have been buying all matter of dog-related products here for my dog for the past 2 years and I couldn't be happier with the service, products, and quality of the overall experience! Superb selection of dog foods - I buy Orijens, which has transformed my dog Quinn into the healthiest pup ever! His coat has never been shinier, and before feeding him this food we were going to the vet every 2-3 months for stomach problems, now he only has to go for his annual vaccinations! The ownership at this store is phenomenal. They are incredibly knowledgeable and are so ready to help with questions or concerns. Both the owners and the staff have done a lot of work to provide the very best selection of products, and it's great to see so many local products as well. In addition to everything else the store itself is just beautiful! I think they're moving in a bit (for more space), but I'm sure that the new location will be just as gorgeous.
