My book club chose this spot for our meeting and I couldn't have been more pleased! I'm not a huge wine fan but I know a large selection when I see one and theirs was huge! Immediately upon entering a lady came over to tell me about the place and asked how many were in my party and brought over water. They weren't serving wine by the glass that night but a few of us split a few bottles. Beer and mixed drinks were available for purchase from the bar as well. Their wine ranges in price so you can go on the lower end or higher, whatever fits your budget and taste buds. I found street parking but I believe there was a lot for a few cars out back as well. Cute little neighborhood place!

Poquito Moscato from Valencia, Spain. It actually comes in a capped bottle opened by a soda bottle opener.

The building that now houses this fine and friendly wine shop/bar is something of note in the annuals of Ohio aqua vitae: a joint that once hollowed this ground was the first to secure a liquor license after the repeal of prohibition. So this IS alcohol numero uno for the Buckeye State--though building goes back longer to the beginnings of the 20th Century long before the street on its left, Wyandotte, existed. Such a historical address deserves a high quality shop of the blessed vine. From my visit last week, my first, The Twisted Vine meets this requirement. It's a wine seller with a bar inside--wall shelves and case stacks over flowing with bottles of bubbles breaking on the brim and cabinets stuffed with fancy cigars. All in a Italian vino dressed room with comfy parlors and seating vignettes layed in the front. Center is the bar which was staff by an uber-knowledgeable sever on my visit, almost as if sent from central casting perfect to play an owner of a rustic Château in Napa Valley she relayed her vast expertise and opinion to my cohort and I with warmness, love of wine, and charm. For starters we ordered a white flight ($9). From sweet to dry served in an order so the flavors won't interfere with each other, the flight featured wines I never had before. Such as the Hungarian Evolucio Furmint, featuring a slightly dry finish with apricot and citrus touches. It was a nice glass. Another was an outside the Rhone Viognier from Chile that was as lush and soft as its Chardonnay cousin. The last was more familiar, an Argentine Sauvignon Blanc--but this one had a nice tropical after-tone that infused its typical dryness with a balanced counter melody of taste. It was a lovely flight. I also finished off a wonderful glass of Sangria which if they still have 'on tap' I highly recommend. Of course, you can have any bottle of wine for a cork fee of $5. We tried an interesting first in Moscato--a bottle that is popped openned via a bottle opener, like a soda bottle. I liked it. Though for someone like me extra particular about the glass drinks are served I do not know if I can accept carbonation in my wine. It was kinda like a really, really, up scale wine cooler that tasted like the actual Moscato. Seems like a fun spot. A good of regs turn up from parts unknown on Thursdays, they day we came, and they were late having our wine server worried. So a tight nit clique hangs here cool. Great place, great wine, good for a drink or to grab a bottle. Five stars.

This has got to be one of the most unique wine bars I have ever seen. This time when I say unique, I don't mean artsy. Most wine bars have a bit of flair. I think it's expected now. Twisted actually doesn't. In fact my friends and I have mentioned before that maybe they could put in softer lights, paint the white walls, add some rugs, hang some art, basically anything to change what's there. Why do we feel the need to make a change, I don't know. What they have there is pretty special. Every Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings (until 9p) they have wine flights for $10. They have a red flight and a chilled or white flight, three glasses each. Seriously! THREE glasses of wine for TEN DOLLARS. Is there anywhere else in the city who can beat that? If so, please let me know. They provide cheese and crackers too, how sweet. The owners are so flexible. You can bring in your own food. Order a pizza from Rotolo's across the street or even bring in your leftover pot roast from dinner the night before. Anything goes, just don't think you can bring in your mama's bottle of wine and cozy up on their plush sofa. That obviously won't fly.

A little afternoon bubbly at The Vine!

They were fairly full when we arrived, but we snagged a two-seater against the wall. There's LIMITED SEATING - so don't plan to come with a group of friends if your intent is to have a few beers at the bar. DO come in a group if you plan on getting food and beers and moving upstairs! We only wanted a couple drinks - and as the crowd was coming and going we didn't want to take up too much space. When I went up to order - they asked if I wanted a plastic cup to go! You can get a beer and peruse the market. Not our end-game this time, as I was planning to build a six-pack. Both ladies working were flying back and forth, taking care of people coming up to the bar, sitting at the bar, and every person that walked up to the register (some people were buying drinks to go, some in cups to walk, and a few people grabbed some of the limited seating present). They have a pretty decent selection of wines and beers available for purchase - some beers on shelves, and a decent selection in a cooler. I had narrowed down to a few choices, and I asked for suggestions and the bartender hopped over and lead the way, and talked about several beers with me (after the usual "what kind of beer do you like? question... which for me is, "yes, please."). She gave me excellent suggestions, and I moved from a 4-pack (you get a discount) to a (more discounts!) 6-pack. They have a GOOD selection for the North Market. It's not the best in the world, and it may not beat a place near where you live, but if you're in the North Market, and you want a good beer and good vibes in a little corner? The Barrel & Bottle has you covered.
