Seeing the back counter, they have a it's very cold to be able to see them making the bagels in the back of the shop. And they have a huge bucket of rosemary sprigs. Just waiting to be used. All very fresh ingredients. The sandwich is large because the bagels are a good size. Chewy in the outside, soft inside. Having lived in NYC I wondered how the lox sandwich would be and it's not too bad. The lox was tender. I asked for chive cream cheese not knowing there was $1 up-charge for it. That was not obvious on the menu. I love capers on a lox sandwich and usually crave more but there were a few too many for me, making the sandwich a little salty. Easy enough to fix after the fact. After a trip a few years back to Montreal I have been OBSESSED with finding a good Montreal style bagel back in the states. So far, in the midwest, I have no had much luck. I've even resorted to driving to Windsor (Canada) near my homebase in MI to look for them on the shelves of some grocers. Alas, all three stores I went to were sold out! Now what's so special about that, you may ask? They're woodfired and the dough uses a bit of honey in the mix for a nice sweet depth of flavor. Anyway, so yes, I was PUMPED when I saw The Lox right next to our hotel (The Graduate) and looked them up to find that they do Montreal style-inspired bagels and we made darn sure to get there in the morning the next day to try them. Cravings? Officially satisfied! Now, I don't think they go full 'Treal with their recipe (as they say they're NYC meets Montreal) so I'm not sure if they use honey (my guess is no since technically that would make them not vegan) but they do execute the most important piece, which is baking them in the woodfired oven. ARGH SO GOOD! Especially the sesame which gets all toasty and just a little burnt, but not too much. Fire kissed, let's say. Dang. Amazing. For dine in I got the eponymous Lox sandwich (with lox, red onion, cucumber, and capers) which was excellent. I also wanted to get some to take home, so I placed an order for a dozen. It was a Sunday morning and they were hopping but they still accommodated my request, I just had to come back a little while later to pick them up. Today was the second day in a week that I went to LOX and tried to buy a 1/2 dozen bagels. Both times they refused to sell me 6 bagels. Trip 1,I was the 2nd person in the door, and there is a guy filling bags of bagels for orders. some are dozen some are 1/2. When I get to the counter i'm told they are only selling sandwiches because they had lost dough the night before due to cooler failure. I guess they wanted to mitigate losses by only selling high margin items, instead of just bagels, even though bags of bagels were going out the door. 2nd trip, today, I walked in, they were a bit busy, but not crazy, and was told that if I wanted 6 bagels, I would have to wait 20-30 min. "We have to fill sandwich orders first" At this time there were several dozen bagels in the baskets and several dozen in the oven that I could see from the counter. So the question is: How much profit margin do you need to make before you will sell a guy 6 bagels at once. $15 for 6 bagels is a little pricey, which would be fine, because the are pretty good. HOWEVER, perhaps you need a neon sign that says "HIGH MARGIN MENU ITEMS ONLY" that you can turn on and off so customers know when they can buy JUST BAGELS from the bagel shop. BAD FORM, and in POOR TASTE. read more

If there's a line, grab one of the plastic menus near the entrance to help you decide. I'm from Montreal and had heard they offer Montreal-style bagels (which I personally prefer over NYC bagels), so I was excited to try them. I ordered the pastrami with cheese on a sesame seed bagel. The wait was short, and the server was kind. Unfortunately, the sandwich itself was underwhelming. The cheese and mustard were very strong and overwhelmed the pastrami. At these prices, it didn't quite live up to expectations--this isn't Katz's Deli. On the plus side, I also ordered an egg salad on a plain bagel, which was much more flavorful. At arrive I noticed the line was of length which is usually a good sign. I ordered the sea salt and herb bagel with chive cream cheese, generous on the cream cheese. Personally they were not generous with the cream cheese as requested and honestly even short changed in the amount for a normal bagel. For the cost I'd expect they would give you an amount cream cheese that was fair. As for the recommended crispy potatoes... well they missed the mark. Light airy fry on them but completely flat on flavor. Zero seasoning and salt. Which with the bagel being well seasoned I was at a shock. I had to go to the counter and request salt to Sprinkle over the potatoes to make them Even semi worth it. If properly seasoned they are probably delicious but what I received 100% missed the mark and after being an owner recommendation thats worry some. No picture of the potatoes. That being said I would expect it to take about 30 minutes from walking in to receiving your order.
