A Late Lunch at The Brown Bag Deli - German Village Tucked away on Mohawk Street in historic German Village, The Brown Bag Deli is the kind of place that feels both casual and quirky the moment you step inside. The walls are painted like blackboards, with the menu handwritten in chalk, giving the space a friendly, eclectic charm. It's the kind of spot that invites you to slow down and savor a sandwich that's been carefully thought through. As a former chef, I tend to pay attention to the details--flavor balance, texture, presentation--and our late lunch at Brown Bag had plenty of those little moments worth noticing. My Sandwich - The #1 on Ten Grain I went with the #1: roast turkey, house-made coleslaw, Swiss cheese, and Russian dressing, all stacked on hearty nine-grain bread, grilled and served warm. True to the deli's name, it arrived wrapped in paper and tucked into a simple brown bag, accompanied by a crisp kosher dill pickle. The turkey had a gentle smoky undertone that stood out nicely against the slightly melted Swiss. The coleslaw was rough-cut, lightly dressed, and added a crunchy, fresh contrast to the rich Russian dressing. At $14.25 a la carte, the sandwich was generous in portion and satisfying, but I found myself thinking this would be the perfect sandwich to split--especially if you're also adding sides. I paired mine with Molly's macaroni salad. It had all the right components--peppers, onion, celery, chopped egg--but for my taste it leaned a little dry. A touch more creaminess could have taken it from "good" to "great." My Wife's Choice - The #16 Classic Club Candi went for the #16 Classic Club: roast turkey, thick-cut bacon, lettuce, tomato, and herb mayo on sourdough. At $14.50, it was every bit the traditional stacked deli club, with layers of flavor you expect. She gave it the thumbs-up. Like mine, her sandwich was served with a pickle, and she added a side of broccoli salad. Flavor-wise, it had promise, but it could have used a bit more seasoning to brighten things up. We also shared a bag of rosemary and garlic kettle chips--crunchy, flavorful, and a good complement to the sandwiches. Price vs. Value Our lunch came to $42.50 before tip, which pushed the total to nearly $50 for two sandwiches, two small sides, and one bag of chips. As someone who's worked in kitchens, I understand the rising cost of ingredients and the challenge of keeping margins while delivering quality. That said, I couldn't help but feel that for the price point, a sandwich should come with a side included. It would make the value match the taste. Final Thoughts The sandwiches were definitely the highlight--thoughtful combinations, good quality ingredients, and prepared with care. Would I go back? Absolutely. But next time, I'll likely split a sandwich, skip the sides, and leave room for dessert--the display case looked tempting. The Brown Bag Deli is a German Village staple for a reason: it's straightforward, unpretentious, and delivers on flavor. Just be prepared for prices that lean higher than your average deli stop. Until next time, I'm Brian -- and remember to Take the Trip! (And maybe the dessert next time, too...)

YE Gurl's Sandwich Stroll: Brown Bag Deli Vibes with the Crew Brown Bag Deli - German Village 4/26/2025 It's YE Gurl! Out here living my best life in German Village with the YE girl crew on one of our low-key, good food, good convo excursions. Brown Bag Deli is that cute, casual sandwich shop tucked near the park, perfect for grabbing a bite and enjoying the charm of the neighborhood. Small, cozy inside with bench seating, but honestly, this is a grab-your-sandwich-and-hit-the-park kind of spot. Meal: Now y'all know I walk the pescatarian/vegetarian line, so the menu was a little limited for me, but I locked in on the Number 15 - Jalapeño Popper Sandwich ($14.00) and it did not disappoint. It's stacked with roasted jalapeño cream cheese, cheddar, hot pepper jack, tomato, red onion, and spinach all hugged by pumpernickel bread. Yes, the spinach was absolutely a strategic choice to move all that cheese along--balance, okay? The sandwich was hefty, packed with flavor, and honestly if I ate meat, it could've been a two-meal situation. But I had just finished my fitness challenge and this was my little indulgence moment before swinging back into my protein-tracking life. The other chicas in the YE girl crew had their sandwiches of choice and we just soaked up the good weather, good energy, and great laughs. Brown Bag Deli keeps it affordable, friendly, and family-ready. Whether you're rolling solo, with your squad, walking your pup, or bringing the kids, this is a solid stop.

This place is FANTASTIC. The amount of sandwich choices to choose from, you really can't go wrong. They are a great size as well! The service is decently fast for how poppin' this place is! I would sooooo come back here. We grabbed some sandos to take with us on a picnic and it was lovely.

I love the brown bag deli! I've been coming here for years and absolutely love their sandwich selection- my favorite is the Village Addiction sandwich and every time I get it they are always helpful and happy to make adjustments to the sandwich for me. The staff is really kind and helpful anytime I have questions they always patiently wait and offer helpful recommendations. Lastly the ambiance is very hipster mom and pop, I think it provides a ton of great no frills just good food vibes to German Village. The location is superb for grabbing a quick bite before heading to the park to hang out with some friends! My only wish was that they try to keep their online menu prices up to date for more seamless experience for customers!

The Brown Bag Deli is superior! Randomly decided to pick my daughter up from school early and ventured here since I was craving a good quality deli sandwich. No exaggeration this may have been the best Club Sandwich I've had. I requested spicy deli mustard which they didn't have but someone from the kitchen overheard and offered to add a family secret spicy mustard, which really in my opinion elevated the experience. The shop is small but adorable and has a few tables for in house dining. The woman at the register was extremely helpful in explaining the sandwich options and daily specials. I paid $28 for what's pictured and wanted to go back in and try more things. Can't wait to visit again

We stopped at Brown Bag Deli today for lunch. This deli is located in the trendy neighborhood known as German Village with its bricked laid streets and cute homes. The deli is super welcoming inside and had many sandwiches too choose from along with some yummy side dishes. I had the classic club with had smoked turkey, thick sliced pepper bacon, Swiss, lettuce, tomato and red onion with herb mayonnaise on my favorite sour dough bread. My side was broccoli salad that had broccoli, sunflowers, red Cabbage and sunflower seeds. Both the sandwich and side were very good. The sandwich was very thick and hearty and the side was a generous portion. The y also gave me a large kosher dill pickle. We sat outside and really enjoyed our food and the shaded sidewalk area. I thought the food was pricey but you received a huge portion. One sandwich and side could easily be split among 2 people. I would definitely go back and you should check them out. I think you would really like what they offer. Oh, they do also offer inside seating. Parking is on the street only. They had great looking desserts but I was too full to partake. Counter service was friendly and welcoming. They do offer soups but I did not purchase one today.

I needed some cupcakes for a gathering, and I saw the reviews so I thought I'd give them a try. I got up early to be there when they opened so I could have a good selection. I was pretty disappointed when I got there and there weren't that many options. I was also surprised at how small they were. The decorative topping is very simple. Then, when they said they were $4 a cupcake, I was even more surprised. If I hadn't made all the trouble to get here and if I didn't really need the cupcakes, I would have gone someplace else. I thought to myself, these better taste amazing. I bought a dozen cupcakes and made sure I got at least one of each flavor. Once I got home, I dug into one, just to see how they were. Once again, I'm disappointed. They don't even taste fresh. WTH?! Now I'm regretting serving the rest of them, because what if they aren't good as well? So disappointed. I got feedback from those at my event and the consensus is these aren't good. All of the cupcakes were dry, crumbled and fell apart when you tried to eat them. What makes matters worse, the owners don't care.

The display of chocolates was completely mesmerizing and contained a wide variety of truffles and handmade candy bars. The shop owner was very friendly and also gave recommendations on what to try. I tried only two truffles because I was so full from all the foods I tried before: Lavender Hand Rolled Truffle: The truffle itself was very dense and rich with a strong presence of cocoa. Every bite melted in my mouth just like any good quality chocolate. What ruined this one was the lavender flavoring which was so overpowering that all I could taste was cocoa and lavender. Vietnamese Cinnamon Hand Rolled Truffle: I really enjoyed this one. The cinnamon and honey in the truffle paired perfectly with the strong cocoa flavor and the chocolate itself was very rich. If I was ever in the area again, I would probably come by to try their handmade candy bars and white chocolate items.
