You can't beat the drink prices in Chico, in general, but this place always has something fantastic on special and on tap. This is a great place for picky beer drinkers. There is a whole wall of taps. But, I find myself ordering the same pitcher of Sierra Nevada (made in Chico) Crystal Wheat, every time. You will never be surprised by this place. I have a love-hate relationship with Ubar.... mainly because my bar type is usually a bit more upbeat than your general quietish ubar night. My love for ubar def outweighs my hate for a few key reasons. NUMBER 1: BUCK NITE... by far the only night Ubar is really bumpin... $1 wells and select beers, including pale ales, you cant get much better than that! And it is quite popular even beyond the normal ubar crowd.. I feel like I know everyone at buck nite, its like a big party that I don't have to clean up the next morning. 2) Crystal Wheat on tap! 3)It's block and a diagonal trek across a parking lot from my house. 4)It's good to start or end at... really cheap drinks! read more

I don't feel the need to describe U Bar. Those who know it, know what it's about; those that don't know...we don't really mind their absence. It's a safe distance away from Riley's and LaSalles (no offense...sort of). That is not to say that the U Bar has a certain "crowd." You'll find people from all walks of life here. The discerning fact is that everyone here seems to have a good attitude, and that enjoyment spreads quickly. They also have some of the best jukebox offerings in town, though every once in a while you'll get stuck with the obligatory lame-o who lines up $5 worth of bullshit for the length of your pool game. I can get over the fact that they got rid of my favorite pinball machine as long as they continue to pour me a good Snake Bite. See you next time I'm in town, as always. read more

I love this place because it's very unassuming. The beer is cheap and the music is loud. They have pool tables and the clientele is mostly laid back. They have a ton of specialty shots/drinks you can ask for. I typically stick with beer and whiskey or bourbon. The could use some clean up and maintenance on the restrooms. I ordered a pitcher of Bud Light last night and it had an awful taste of diacetyl to it, I asked the bartender if I could get a different beer and she pretty much told me I don't know what I'm talking and treated me like I'm an idiot. Her justification was that the keg was "fresh". This is the second time I've gotten a bad Bud Light here in the last month but at least the first time it happened the bartender was understanding and swapped it out for another beer. They need to do a better job of cleaning their draft lines or whoever is contracted to do it because that was just gross. It's just sad because they have an awesome looking tap set up but it's not properly maintained. read more

U-Bar is a nice bar, with a great atmosphere and a very solid beer selection with excellent specials. The problem with U-Bar is that its normally pretty empty, and the regulars are notably older and less fun than at other establishments a block away. I dont know why that is, either. Maybe its because of its strange location, or the lack of any 'hook' type of night (buck night, power hour, 80s night, whatever), but in general, U Bar is frequented by people who dont really seem to like going out that much, or are more aniti social. And thats great, but its not as much fun. And, ill say it, U-Bar is definitely the nerdiest bar in town, probably because of all the video games and, as noted, anti social vibe. Fun place. Came here with friends for graduation night (last night) and it was pretty packed, with a huge line, we went in through this door because it was the connecting bar to the beach, and it had a shorter line. The bar was fairly empty, we walked right up, got a drink, played some pool, (they have 3 pool tables and a few other games like fooseball and air hockey.) after we finished our drinks there, we went to the beach through the connecting door and danced for hours. read more

The one bar that I always find myself at. No matter what night of the week it is, U-bar always has a special worth a drink. From buck night on Wednesdays, to $3 double Captains every night. With a solid Internet jukebox, the music is always the best for those that don't want to just sit in a crowded building stuck listening to hyphy music. Radiohead is a frequent, along with many other indie bands. While the crowd is usually pretty different than most bars (Riley's, La Salle's, Duffy's), the people you see are always regulars. Also, the bartenders are awesome, and bouncers are great as well. Plus, three pool tables, a massive air hockey table, a nice selection of video games and a Foosball table, along with four TVs and many sets of dice. U-bar is def a great bar. But us regulars are good without the lame crowd. If you come, be happy. Keep the attitude great, and buy me a drink, I'll take whatever. read more

The only reason I'm giving this review stars is simply the location made it pretty cool. My fiancé and I went to Chico to visit and decided to grab a drink before we walked around. Upon going downstairs into the bar, we waited for about five minutes while the regulars were served. We walked down the bar a little bit to see what was on tap, and a man behind the bar mentioned to us "oh I'm not a bartender but if you have and food questions let me know", haha unnecessary but okay cool thanks right? So a few more people walked in, and were still waiting on being served. Finally we put our drink order in and I hand my card to the bartender and she asks me "open or closed?" I state back to her closed, and she swipes my card multiple times - leaves the card in the drawer and walks away. This bartender did everything in her power to not look at me while I stood by the bar waiting for my card back. As she starts walking away I ask for my card and she said "oh I thought you said closed".. Even if I had said closed why would you ignore a paying customer who is obviously needing some assistance if I'm standing by the bar still? I had a very poor experience, but if your super into sports then this place is for you. I am also currently waiting for THREE bank charges from the bar to drop since the bartender swiped my card so many times so my tip to you is use cash. read more

Just left here, ordered a pitcher of Lagunitas IPA and they tried to charge me 17.50. The white board said 9.75 for a pitcher. I questioned the bartender who said it was his first night. He was annoyed already by being asked questions. He asked the other bartender and she said it was only domestic although it did not clearly state that, and she was also pissed off for no reason. I said I didn't want it anymore and they proceeded to be condescending. "You don't just get to not pay for something you ordered." I stood next to the bar fuming from being treated rudely and the guy spoke to me again saying " you're beer is here if you actually feel like paying for it." Instead of admitting there was a mistake on the board and giving us a discount or at least being apologetic they were very rude. I left the bar because I was so frustrated, but my friend who was still inside said the guy gave the pitcher to another customer for free right in front of my friends so they could see it. If I was an owner or a manager of this place I would be very upset with these workers But Whatever. Walked around the corner and bought the same exact beer for $12 a pitcher at regular price at another bar. Even got a smile from the bartender. Needless to say I will be avoiding Ubar as much as possible from now on. read more

U-Bar! Buck Night on Wed night is always a fun time to go and have a few cheap drinks. The bartenders are always friendly and fast! While some say the bar is too dark from its basement location but ubar has a kind of nostalgic dive bar feel and the arcade games, air hockey, and pool provide for good group activities. UBar! I have love for the U because it's been our place for days, especially since the Riff Raff closed. It's dark, it's dank, but it's also the shit. U bar is definitly different then any of the other bars in downtown chico. They have a ton of different arcade games you can play. Air hockey, pool, fooseball, and this punching game that Im pretty sure will keep any one coming back. It is alittle gloomy since it is underground and there are no windows. The only really negative thing I have to say about this place is the bathrooms. EVERYTIME I go to this bar I notice that 2 of the 3 toilets are usually clogged or over flowing. I was torn between 3 and 4 stars here. The U-Bar is a classic which, like the Bear, must be experienced by all who visit Chico. Get past the bouncer up top and you'll experience the best "dive bar" you've ever been to. Thing is, it's not that much of a dive. The underground location may lead to some strong alcohol smells, but the U-Bar is still a great place to hang out, get drunk, and argue politics. A couple of pool tables last I went, plus a surprisingly-decent arcade make this a pretty appropriate University bar to visit, even though it's not nearly the closest watering hole to CSU Chico. Obviously, proximity to the downtown public parking lot is a big draw for this place, but their deals are hard to beat. It's a meeting place for friends, and the jukebox is generally filled up with several dollars worth of requests for rock music, unlike many other bars in downtown constantly drowning out conversations with terrible electronic music. The last time I dropped by, there was a machine that had as winnings several taps from days gone by. This is a more personal bar, a place for locals to meet and hang out. This is the standard bar crowd most nights. Cheap drinks, rock music, and tons of regulars. A good place to drop by if you just want a couple of beers. It's not a tourist attraction, and due to its placement, is probably the closest you'll ever get to a "locals-only" bar in downtown. The bouncers are strict, the tenders are very customer-unfriendly, and the place isn't made for dancing. If you're looking for a club, there are plenty of other options. If you want a good bar that gives you booze at a reasonable price, you're at the right place. read more
