Apparently this is one of the better restaurants in Chico. It is a bit upscale with both indoor and outdoor patio seating. I found the interior to be somewhat dark and gloomy. The carpet in particular is somewhat outdated and very dreary. We were seated right away with an evening reservation. Our server was the most delightful, helpful as well as professional person. She definitely made for an enjoyable experience. The menu is nicely broad with some very good and interesting selections. For an appetizer I selected the Alsatian Tarte Flambe. With the description of a "tarte" plus "puffed pastry" I was somewhat surprised when what looked like a flatbread arrived. Although somewhat true to the description I expected something like a cup shaped pastry. It was delicious enough so no complaints over the ingredients and flavor. If anything it tasted a bit top heavy with vinegar, yet still enjoyable. I washed it down with a Schramsberg Prosecco which was a perfect accompaniment. For an entree I choose the Grilled 6oz Petit Tender (medium rare) with asparagus and scalloped potatoes topped by a red wine and berry sauce. It was excellent, flavorful with the meat very tender. I was very pleased. It was an abundant portion so I was quite full after consuming it. My dining companion had the grilled meatloaf with ground filet mignon and pork sausage. It is baked and then grilled. I tried some and it is EPIC. It has to be one of the best meatloaf preparation I ever tasted. Bravo on this dish! We shared a bottle of Tempranillo to accompany it which was perfect. For dessert we shared a nice and refreshing mint chocolate chip ice cream which was generously comped as we were there for a special occasion. Thank you! Granddaughter's graduation at Chico State so we stopped by afterwards. We had reservations for six but had to wait at the bar for 10 -15 minutes before being sat. Ambiance felt a bit chaotic, not welcoming as a white table clothe restaurant should be! Watched bartender making drinks which wasn't too appealing. Waitress finally sat us and took our order. Appetizers arrived shortly after and was very unimpressed. The deviled eggs were old and underfilled and the chocolate croissants were reheated with globs of chocolate poured on top. Dutch baby looked like a crepe and the breakfast burger which was 1/2 beef and 1/2 sausage was undercooked! Fish and chips barely had any tarter sauce, greasy and full of batter. My friends and I recently moved here for college. Naturally, we got lost while driving so we stopped by this god forsaken restaurant simply to ask for directions. Instead of being courteously welcomed--as expected by a SERVICE establishment--we were mocked by the host after asking for help: He even snarled, "Oh, so you're using our store as a walkway?" and proceeded to laugh in our faces. We quickly apologized, yet he continued his hideous laughter even while we walked out the door. What kind of establishment pays a wage to such a lowlife, disrespectful employee? He was so forgetful and useless we can't even recall his name. I understand we weren't paying customers, but treating women like idiots in the 21st century is as outdated as his thinning mustache. Grow up and become the man you pretend to be. Maybe you'll finally get the facial hair you've always dreamt of. read more

Came here for our anniversary and had the best time! We sat on the patio which was nice and cool thanks to all the trees and shade! They had a little sign on our table saying happy anniversary which was so sweet. Our server was great she was super nice and attentive. We started with some delicious cocktails and the tarte appetizer. I love how the menu slightly changed to serve what was is in season. The tomatoes and arugula were delicious in it. They also have an option for $16 to add a salad or soup and a dessert to any entree. We both got the Caesar and they were great. I loved the meatloaf and would definitely order it again, my husband enjoyed the ribeye and it was cooked perfectly. We both ended the meal with the bread pudding and gelato. I also love how they have wine pairing suggestion for all of the entrees that made selecting a wine easy! This is a great spot if you wanna come celebrate or just have a nice meal. Sunday brunch! Their 2nd weekend in and it was delicious. Our server Amanda was there for recommendations and looked after us so well during our meal. We started with the deviled eggs which were all equally tasty. We did the spicy crab Benedict and the duck confit hash. The Benedict had the perfect amount of spice, and was served with a warm potato salad. That potato "salad" ended up being a favorite part. Roasted potatoes, tomatoes, and capers. Wow! Duck hash was yummy. There's something to be said for food that is prepared so lovingly and is so balanced you don't want for anything. We sat inside but the patio had someone spinning records which will be fun for next time. Reservations recommended, and I can see why when this gets more popular! It was a lively evening where everyone tried something new and all of it was delicious. a really nice lady whom I am sure was either an owner or part of the management team, brought our little one crayons to color with while we waited. Had a reservation, arrived 5 minutes before, table that was going to be provided, clients were still seated, had eaten but were still talking, had not paid, had left over food in recipients. We had to sit at the bar waiting, after more then 45 minutes, we were told there was another table available. We walked to the table, table had been given to other clients. Seated back at the bar. Another table became available. We were seated. Waitress came by and said she would be back . Twenty minutes passed til she finally taken care of. I told her everything we went thru. She apologized. I have been wanting to try this place for quite awhile! The Red Tavern is located in Chico..in an unpretentious location (esplanade avenue). They open at 430 pm daily. We went here today..december 20th..see receipt. Although smaller then expected it had a very cozy atmosphere. Alot of artwork on the walls. For dinner i shared the 10 ounce steak and the 11 dollar happy hour sauteed shrimp. The steak was too rare for me but the shrimp sautéed in butter and garlic was delicious! We enjoyed their house cab...only 7 dollars during happy hour( which lasts till 6 pm). The cab tasted like a 20 dollar glass of wine! We also had the egg nog cheesecake which was so good! They have indoor and outdoor seating. Outdoor seating has large patio heaters. They have a smaller area to sit at the bar. They offer a full bar and a TON of signature cocktails. This place is a bit more upscale then super casual attire (fyi). The staff is friendly and super accommodating! Shae was our waitress and she was delightful and on top of everything! The female owner (chris i think) checked on us and was genuinely intetested in feedback from other patrons! The customer is always right does not exist in this restaurant. One of the staff here was so rude, unprofessional and with a big attitude. We had an appointment at 6:45pm. Showed up at 6:15am. We could not be seated because supposedly our table was not ready. We had to wait outside because the bar was full. I went in around 6:30pm to check if we could be seated. She said no. We returned to Red Tavern for our second Mother's Day after an amazing experience last year. I love that you can make reservations and the patio is lovely and very child-friendly. The servers were very friendly, provided crayons and a high chair for the baby, and did not make us feel rushed enjoying the company at our table. Last year there was live music and flowers for the moms, and those amenities were missed this year, but not expected. The biggest miss was my dutch baby pancake (unfortunately also ordered by a mom in our group). I didn't say anything during the meal because I didn't want to spoil anyone's time, and because I know Mother's Day is the busiest day of the year, but it was barely edible. I had never had one before so I thought maybe they were supposed to be rubbery, but a quick Google search revealed should be light and fluffy, served immediately, and never reheated. I am hoping the lack of quality control was due to the holiday, but I'm still not sure I would try it again! I definitely recommended continuing to monitor the consistency or considering removing it from the menu. read more

My husband and I tried Red Tavern for our first time tonight to celebrate our 21 year anniversary. We had reservations. We sat at our table for a good 15 minutes before we were even acknowledged by our server. I ordered the Sea bass and a glass of wine and my husband ordered the steak and a beer. I love fish and always order it when we go to a nice restaurant as I don't eat red meat. The Sea bass was the worst fish I have ever ordered in my life. The top was burnt and the inside was slimy and the flavor wasn't good. Sea bass is usually my favorite. My husbands steak was fatty and tasted like vinegar. Our waters were never refilled and I sat with an empty glass of wine for half of my dinner. After I had been finished with my dinner for 5-10 minutes the manager finally asked me if I wanted another glass of wine. Too late. There were only 3 other tables with customers and there were more people working there than there were customers yet we hardly saw our server at all. The food and service were definitely not work the $120 dinner plus tip. We won't be back. I would recommend Unwined, Sierra Nevada, 5th Street or Lassen Steakhouse over this place. read more

First of all we had made our reservations for this restaurant for a birthday, told the person it would be 5 adults and 3 children when we called. Arrived to the restaurant and explained that the 2 adults and 1 child was not coming. Placed our order, ordered all the specials (French onion soup, scallops, and pork belly) along with shrimp and lobster spaghetti, charcuterie board, the fillet mignon, and 2 child pastas with red sauce when we placed our order also placed our drink orders as well. Took over 20 mins to get an ice tea, never brought bread to the table but the other tables received bread and butter. I asked if we could get bread to the table, after I had to ask then we got some, but the other tables got them as soon as they sat down. Ok now why the one star review!! The kids pasta mind you they are 1 1/2 & 4 years of age, arrived to the table. When I tell you the spice level was insane for Childs plates! The baby was crying from his young being on fire, and the older one was chewing ice chips and eating crackers to try to get rid of the burn from the spice heat! We told our server, she offered a replacement ( cheese burger) we said yes. Burger took over 45 mins only brought only one burger and at this point I was just over it kids where tired and hungry! Not only that the pork belly was an awful, that scallops where undercooked! The filet mignon and the lobster and shrimp pasta along with the bread and butter would be the ONLY thing I would recommend. So now the bill arrived the lady added her tip in the bill which normally I like but the service and food was so awful. They did not even remove the kids pastas from the bell that were an edible. They took literally two pasta bowls, the scallops and the pork belly from the table with just bites eaten out of them I did not expect them to remove the pork belly or the scallops from the bill but the kids pasta. I mean come on now who adds heat to children's pastas? Service was extremely slow, and was told multiple times give me a minute never was offered a refill had to ask. And Definitely not a child friendly restaurant. I frequent many steakhouses and have never experienced anything like this over $300. An awful service definitely would not be returning.! read more

Probably my favorite in Chico right now! The food is all just amazing, the service is great and the atmosphere is on point. They are great for small or larger groups and very accommodating. The stroganoff was fabulous and had fresh homemade noodles (bring it back!!! I went just for that and it had been removed from the menu!!) BUT the short ribs did a good job of replacing it but still that stroganoff was off the hook!!! My mom loves the salad with the fun stuff on it Swordfish is great and always cooked perfectly. Meatloaf was really tender and tasty - the first time a friend had it the presentation was a bit better this time there were three orders of it and I feel it didn't look like hers did when I first saw it a few months ago! Fideo - I would say it's good but could use something just not sure what it is!!!! Frities are on point and great for an appetizer and so is the salmon thing they make lol I can't remember the name of it! So for deserts - most of them we have tried are great so it's really about your taste but it's worth it even if you share just to have a few bites! This is a very cozy, family owned restaurant. The ambience of the restaurant was very inviting. They have a beautiful patio for these warm afternoons for lunch or dinner. Parking was very easy and our server was outstanding and very attentive from the moment we walked in we were greeted and seated immediately. We chose to eat out on the patio and started with a smooth, but crisp Rose and an oaky, buttery Chardonnay.... so delish... My aunt and I ordered the Chicken Scallopini with caramelized shallots, Capers, Pansetta, Mushrooms, lemon/butter sauce over Creme Fraiche mash potatoes... OMG .. so good and the portions are very large. My husband order the Croque Madame with Brioche, Ham, Gruyere, Sauce Mornay, with Sunny side up egg and served with Frites. He enjoyed every bite. For dessert, I ordered the refreshing raspberry sorbet. We were all extremely pleased with our meals and even had some to take home. When you are in the Chico area and looking for a little quaint place with great tasting food you need to come to the Red Tavern Bistro and Bar. Thank you for the amazing hospitality and food. Celebrated my birthday dinner at Red Tavern last week. This place has been on my list of to-try and finally made the call; best decision ever. We arrived around 7:20pm and the kitchen closes at 8:30pm weekdays, but the staff was amazing and accommodating . We ordered flywheel and purple rain to start, must try drinks. For appetizer, we ordered meat balls and mushroom fritters, both were amazing and the drinks (chefs kiss). For our main, my partner ordered the New York and I ordered the pork chops, both to die for; Cooked perfectly and seasoned to perfection. The pork chop was both tender and sweet , I still dream about it. The staff was amazing and not to forget I brought my doggo to dinner, so we essentially dined under the stars in a romantic backyard surrounded by glistening Christmas lights - Such a mood. The night was amazing, lots of laughs, amazing food, top notch drink surrounded by the awesome staff. First time trying Red Tavern and let me tell you it was to die for. We ordered the Alsatian Tarte Flambe for starters and it was delightful. My husband got the Bucatini pasta with clams and pancetta, he really enjoyed it. Super flavorful. I got the filet mignon and it's probably one of the best tasting steaks I've ever had. Super good quality, high end, amazing food. Definitely recommend. My husband got the sticky toffee dessert and ended up splitting it with me it was so goooood! I got the strawberry cheesecake, neither of us was a fan. Was frozen still and had a bad burnt flavor. Didn't taste like cheesecake at all, the strawberries were sour and crust was very hard to cut!
