If you are going to buy a Lotto ticket, don't go there. The owner right away started to complain about people buying a lotto ticket but not booze. He went into a litany "do you understand that I have to pay 19 dls an hour for staff? You don't understand that I only make money from the hotel across the street. "Cal Lottery came to pick up their vending machine because not many buy tickets." Store owner is super rude!!!!!!! I came in to buy a chaser and was trying to compare prices with tito's bottles I told him I'll be back. I went to the bank and back And when i came back he refused my service ! He proceeded to make remarks that clearly showed he was upset over having to start the transaction again with my new items. This liquor has been in the family for decades and is a mainstay in Uptown Whittier. Rich is very personable and does a great job of making you feel at home. A wonderful neighborhood liquor store with an impressive variety of beer and wine. I initially wanted a bottle of wine but discovered their assortment of Chimay beer and ended up with a bottle. The guys were super friendly and kept me laughing. This is a good stop especially if your staying across the street at the hotel. read more

I Walked into the store with a winning lottery ticket and the barcode at the bottom had not been scratched off. The owner whom I handed the lottery ticket to had to give me a lecture on why I should scratch the barcode myself because he had better things to do (although he was standing there when I walked in). At no point did I ever say I would not scratch the barcode myself as he held onto it and did so himself while lecturing me. I hate this place. Unnecessarily expensive and transactions take forever. Go to Rite Aid or the Cellar for your alcohol. I only ever go here when I absolutely have to, which is rare. But it's so bad I feel it is my duty to warn others of how gross this place is. The vibe is incredibly toxic here. You can tell they rely solely upon their craft beer selection which used to be good but now it's very basic. The Cellar is a few blocks away and has fresher, colder and more decently priced beer and wine. Everyone mentions an Asian or middle eastern man but the worst one is the old white creep with glasses and bad teeth who knows me but always pretends not to. He's super rude but not very smart so when he argues with me it usually ends with him being very quiet and thanking me for my business. It's really weird. He's super creepy. They charge for atm cards. Some days it's .50 and sometimes it's 1.00. Honestly the guy is so dumb... I called him out on the inconsistent fee and I caught him in a lie. No card payment if less than $10. If you pay with cash count the change right after on the counter, the Asian dude shorts you by a whole dollar. I had to walk him like a child to the price tag in the store then pulled out my phone calculator to do the math added tax and showed him. Right after I paid I checked the expiration date and it was expired. I went to the back to grab another and the whole selection was expired. On top of that the bottles are fake, I've purchased different bourbons from here and all of them are resealed even the expensive ones. On March 6th at around 11:40 a.m. I went into this liquor store as I have since I was 5 years young. I have often bought many items from gum to milk ,etc. This day I went to buy lotto tickets. When I got to the counter The son (asian) of the owner was at the counter. I asked him " what are the tickets today for the lottery" he said " I don't F'en know go look"?? So I went and came back and asked for the 2 that day. He then replied "is that it" I said yes. He then spent about 3/5 minutes explaining all about how people come in every day and only buy tickets and nothing else? That him taking a few steps and pushing a few buttons is a lot of work for him? So after about 3/5 minutes I asked him " what exactly are you asking of me"? He said " go to 7/11 or Circle K if you want your tickets? So I started to walk out and as I reached the door he came from behind the counter about 30 ft from me and started talking again. I was in between the door and started video tapping (about 40 seconds worth). You can clearly see and hear me talking and explaining to him that they charge me 1.00 when ever I buy items under 10.00 and I am fine with that bcuz it gives the store money. Then he proceeds to come towards me and reach out to me to grab me or my phone. I then move out towards outside and he tries to grab me. I feel him grab my arm but I duck and spun away. I feel like my MCL tore. I have a Drs Apt next week to see what's wrong ,since then my knee has hurt. Not to mention since this day It has bothered me BIG TIME. You see I'm 6'4" 220 and could of seriously hurt this man per the law and protecting myself but I did not. This POS assaulted me. I then call the police and wanted to press charges but the police said If I press charges that the clerk will press charges for trespassing in which I never did. I bought a ticket and then walked out. I have contacted a lawyer and will send video to the news. Please be very carful with this person. When I have the $$$$ & it's past after hours to go to Trader Joe's., this is one of my other favorite spots to buy wine, for the hubby his craft beer. Prices are about average, but if your going to spend more (which is most local liquor stores) I would suggest liquor stores like this one that have a huge selection in wines, beers & the hard stuff. Staff has always been cool & helpful. Parking, mostly on street, not too bad. To sum it up, it's the only store in uptown that has a huge selection of quality alcohol. In regards to the other negative reviews, so sad to hear that, I feel bad hooraying about their booze selection, as it is important that customers are not disrespected, especially the locals, they are why your business still stands. I never had a bad experience with the people who ran me up or worked there, but I did sense some sort of attitude when others where there working. Honestly the service you get is dependent on who is working that day. They tend to get some good beers and they are usually priced a little high, but not horrible. They also get some pretty good bourbon's here, including some of the harder to find allocated stuff. Unfortunately they are more often than not priced way too high and marked up to around secondary prices or more. Had the most bizarre retail encounter of my life at Uptown Liquor. Was staying at the hotel across the street and stopped in midday to buy some items. A twenty something clerk was setting up displays and I asked him if they had any V8. He curtly walked by and snapped at me "NO!" I looked in a nearby fridge and I saw about two dozen V8s. I grabbed a couple, some other items and walked to the counter to pay up. The clerk was about 15 feet away still working on a display and I told him I found some V8 and I'm ready to pay. He looked at me annoyed. He then walked past me and told me he didn't feel like ringing me up and could I come back in about a half hour?! He then disappeared somewhere in the back. I waited a few, then left. I went back to the hotel and mentioned this to some of the staff they said they guy was probably the owner's son and he is known for pissing people off. Never been to a place where they don't feel like checking you out. That was a first for me. Ran into a few more people who had similar experiences and decided to stay away. Good news is tried the Rick's Burgers across the street and it was love at first bite. read more

Nice mom and pop liquor store on Greenleaf right down the street from The Bottle Room. Great selection of harder to find craft beers at fair prices. On my last visit they had Ballast point Sculpin, Firestone Double Jack, Avery Maharaja, Flying Dog Raging Bitch, Deschutes Hop Henge, Firestone Flying Merlin and many, many more. Seems to be a family operation and they are very friendly, though I haven't asked for advice so I can't coment on their beer knowledge. They also have an extensive selection of wine and liquor that I haven't explored yet. Overall, a good place to find that beer you've been looking for or maybe something new. read more
