Stepped into this heavenly pet store w/ some friends today & we felt like we were in a Disneyland gift shop but for pets!!! The many brands of wet food / dry cereals for the paws in your life! Annnnnd my wordy... the toys, bday pet gifts, and outfits for every season! I could go on & on. I was amAzed at every corner of this store. Marcella greeted us at the cash wrap station & we immediately signed up for membership! Cannot pass up a special deals day. Lol We were even encouraged to bring our pets into the store next time so now I just want to start asking neighbors if I can bring their pet into the store as a field trip. This place has become incredibly frustrating. I have been in the shop five separate times, and not once has anyone asked if I needed assistance. Customers are left wandering the store while employees sit behind the counter eating and socializing with one another. When the shop was located across the street, the staff was attentive and welcoming. The difference in service now is disappointing. During my most recent visit, there was an employee with dark hair standing behind the counter while the entry alarm clearly signaled that customers were coming in, yet no acknowledgment was made. I needed some pellets for my foster bunnies, and since this store is in the same complex where I get my mail I went in to pick some up. The Urban Pet offers a wide range of pet food, treats, supplies, & accessories - mostly catering to dog & cats. At the entrance is a Zen Koi pond. The store is neatly organized and easy to navigate. They also offer grooming services. A kind employee helped me locate the pellets. There is a small section for bunnies & guinea pigs. What began as the occasional stop for incidentals has now become my base store for my two dogs. The staff are always friendly, knowledgeable, and genuinely care about helping you find the right products. The store is clean, well-stocked, and thoughtfully organized, which makes quick visits or longer shopping trips easy and enjoyable. I have a picky dog who will like his food one day and hate it the next. I feed him the cooked food that's in the freezer sections. I like that this store sells the food in individual packs instead of me purchasing the big bags that have 4-5 packs inside. I wasn't able to find that at another store that I used to shop at before. Really cool pet store. What I love about the Urban Pet store is their wide variety of cat toys! My fiancé and I came just to browse, and yet we ended up leaving with $60 worth of cat toys and a cat mug and a cat tote bag. My cats fell in love with the toys! They had such a wide variety of Da Bird cat toys--they had the zebra fish, the flyer, the goldfish, the sparkler, the ball. Our cats were so happy. They also had peacock feathers for like $2 a piece! Definitely coming back to restock on kitty cat toys and treats. I love that the owners pets are on full display in the store. read more

How do I get the store's management attention for rude services? Lately, I recognized new hires in the store, and those cashiers are rude and made me feel so un-welcomed. It's all written on their faces, attitude when answering questions...like I am taking time from them when I am trying to get a few more items from the store. My dogs love this store and we've been coming here for years. So sad that store has hired some pretty rude cashiers and that is enough to not want to go anymore and take my business elsewhere. Thinking to just switch store or avoid going on Thursdays. Most rude experience came from cashiers on Thursday. I did not get the rude employee's name. She worked on Thursday (today 6/26) at 7:40pm. This isn't the first time I encountered a super rude cashier. But enough is enough so I decided to write this review. Normally love this store because everyone is usually so kind, so this review is really about one employee. Really off day today, or this person is new who has some really negative energy that makes you feel like they are extremely annoyed. She has short dirty blond hair and glasses. This one experience totally leaves a damper on my experience as a customer, especially because I would not want to engage with her again in future visits. Staff here usually knows how to engage with kids. This one right off the bat came off super cold when we asked if we could feed the fish. She should ask others how they respond and learn from them. Even when ringing up items, the whole energy combined with mumbling and acting annoyed when my toddler was helping put the items from the cart to the counter (which she doesn't do as fast as an adult does, but still not deserving of an exasperated expression when there were no other customers) or when I asked her to please repeat something, wow. A couple other nuanced interactions but I cannot imagine how she is a pet lover if you react that way with kids. Customer service really makes or breaks the experience. read more

I am unsure about all these reviews claiming how incredible the employees are here. I have been constantly disappointed in how poor service is these days. As a kid and into my mid-twenties, I was in customer facing positions, I would have never dreamed to be so rude and uninterested in the customers I came across. I went into the store for my dog's food, recently found out she's allergic to everything, so finding a variety of wet food is difficult. I went into the store, knowing that they had a few different brands from the shop closer to my house. The reason they are even getting a 3-star review is simply because of the fact that they had what I went into the store for. Otherwise, based on employee interaction, it would have been 1-star. Upon entering, the door bell went off announcing someone had walked in, no welcome from anyone. There were 3 employees behind the registers. I continued walking around the store, I brought in my own bag to make it easier on myself. My own basket, as I like to think. I am in the store long enough to warrant someone to come over and ask me if I needed any assistance, but no. As I finished up, I walked closer to the registers and was looking at the treats, when I heard their conversation, as follows: Employee 1: Kanye is crazy. Employee 2: Yeah, did you hear about Kim's post? E1: OMG, yeah. E2: Did you hear about Crissy Teigen? E1: No what happened? E2: She posted about basically being a functioning alcoholic. I mean big deal I do this all the time. Cool, customers definitely want to hear about how terrible your life is. The conversation continued on the subject... I finished shopping and walked up to the registers, lost and unsure who to walk up to, since none were leading me anywhere, I went to the middle person. She told me that she could help me. So, I began taking everything out of my bag and she asked if I had a number with them. I said no, expecting to hear something about their membership... nothing. She just said "No worries" and rang everything up, asked if I wanted a receipt, I said yes, she printed it, handed it to me and walked away. Apparently, I was to bag everything myself. To be quite honest, if that is the case and if that is protocol, then why not have self-checkout and stop wasting money on having 3 employees working at one time, doing nothing but socializing? I cannot say that I am willing to deal with the entitled youths working at this location to want to come back and shop here. I waited and waited before giving this store 1 star. I waited through the time when due to a severe leg injury I had to struggle in and out of its heavy door with my walker while the young, able bodied staffers chatted and laughed with each other a few feet away at the counter. Why do I come here all the way from Hollywood? The kitty grass! For a couple years now. Here's my exchange with the staffers yesterday after one showed me the "Kitty grass we just got in" and it was yellow! (I'm with a cane now, BTW) Me: That's old grass. Staffer #1: We just got it in. Me: It's yellow. Staffer #1: It's just wet. Me: No. It's actually turning yellow because it's old. Staffer #1: Well, that's all we have. Then Staffer #2 suddenly displays the kind of involvement I wish they'd show to the disabled who struggle with that door: Staffer #2: It's seasonal. Me: What do you mean "seasonal"? Staffer #2: Seasonal! Kitty grass is seasonal! Me: You mean this is not the "season" for it? Staffer #2: Yes. Me: I buy it all the time here. It's never been yellow! And look at the roots that are coming out of the bottom. Staffer #2: Because it's seasonal! (cue the Monty Python sketch about the dead parrot) Well, I looked it up after I got home and it said that Kitty Grass that's grown indoors is NOT seasonal which may indicate one of the following about the so-called staff at this store: 1. They don't know what they are talking about. 2. They don't care if they are right or wrong as long as they can make up a reasonable sounding statement. In the past, when I had difficulties getting a knowledgeable answer over the phone, I asked to speak to the manager and he was both knowledgeable and helpful. But I'm sticking with the one star for the behavior of the staff in general. Enough is enough. read more

This is the most zen pet store I've ever been to- there is a pond indoors with a mini waterfall and koi fish! There are chairs next to the pond with magazines (hanging out/ chilling encouraged?). The staff are super nice and helpful here. Love this place read more

Wow, this is such a nice pet store. Years ago I lived a lot closer to Urban Pet, actually just down Fair Oaks, and I remember this being a nice but pretty small overall pet store in the heart of South Pas. Recently, I stopped in again with my pet as we were in the area picking up a pizza from Mama's across the street and... I was blown away. Their selection is so much better than I remembered. Tons of great toys for dogs, snacks you don't see many other places (love that they have the Zignature Catfish treats, my pup loves them and they're not easy to find), and lots of accessories for dogs and cats alike. The staff was friendly, making sure we were catered to and when the time came made sure my dog had a nice treat at the checkout counter. I also loved the large koi pond, what a treat. My pup looked over the edge as half a dozen large koi came swimming over to great us. Great stuff on offer here, and clean, friendly, really nice to visit store. I feel terrible we've been away for so long, since we're in the area a few times a month. We're going to have to make a stop a more frequent thing for my pup and I when we're in South Pas. read more

I typically go to another pet store for my kitten's food, but ran out early and needed to go somewhere closer this morning. Thank you for opening up at 9am on Saturday!!! So many other stores in the area open at 10am or later!! They carried all the brands my Roland eats -- Stella & Chewy, ZiwiPeak and Answers! However, they did not carry (or maybe out of stock?) a few flavors that we regularly purchase - such as ZiwiPeak Air-Dried Beef and Stella & Chewy Frozen Raw Rabbit or Chicken. I will absolutely be back though - service was great, parking was plentiful and majority of my go-to items were there! Cute store with good customer service too! read more

4.5 stars! Overall I like this place, they stock a lot of smaller specialized food brands that don't aren't on Chewy or Amazon so that's nice. They can also custom order specific flavors of brands for you if you need them to. Docking 0.5 star off because I've noticed some inconsistency with customer service from staff. I had a specific type of food I wanted to see if they had and I called in and the girl who answered the phone was helpful and told me that while this store didn't have that specific food, one of their sister branches did so they could transfer it over for me to pick up. Once the food came in I got a call to go grab it which was nice. When I went to pick it up the cashier asked if I was a member and when I said no, she explained their paid membership plan to me. I wasn't interested at the time so I said I'd think about it. But the next time I came to buy something a different employee asked me if I had a phone number with them and I said I wasn't a paid member but then she told me just registering my phone number with them was free? Just confused why the initial employee didn't bother mentioning this to me so I could record previous purchase under my phone number. Another time I called in asking if they had a specific flavor of the food I wanted, the girl on the phone flat out said "No, we don't carry that brand here." I had to tell her, "I know you don't, but last time I called they told me that your sister branches carry that brand? Can you check for me?" And she seemed a little bothered and said she would but then said, "No, none of them carry that flavor you need." and I had to ask her, "Well.. can you order it for me..?" Basically the entire interaction was like pulling teeth. Good customer service would be if she had offered all the options to me instead of just trying to not help me. Then I went into the store another time and the cashier was so friendly and I decided to ask the different cashier if she could check if the other stores had the flavor I wanted and she was very nice and told me that they did!!! So I don't even know if the previous girl on the phone even bothered to check the other stores for me or not. I usually go to the traditional pet stores but today I wanted to this try this place. The store is very clean, organized and nicely decorated; there is also a small Koi pond located towards the back. For pet toys, I saw fun and innovative products that I don't see in other stores. I saw a cat condo made of cardboard and a cat treat maze box that you place treats inside so the cats can search for them. They also sell a wide selection of healthy pet foods that are corn and grain free. While walking around I was approached by Erica and she asked if I needed any help. I told her I was looking for things to buy for my daughter's cats. Erica is also a cat owner so she showed all the cool toys that her cats loved. She introduced me to cat litters that are safe and works well. Then I followed her to the cat food section and she provided me some information about some of the products. Since my daughter's cats were rescued from the shelter, Erica offered a free membership for a year which I will receive a discount when I shop here again. Urban Pet encourages customers to bring their pet/s while shopping. One of the staff brought her cute dog. The dog was friendly and loved the attention from the customers. They also offer services, such as vaccinations, health certificates, microchip, de-worming, and teeth cleaning etc. Dog training is available at the store and they offer private training at home as well. So I had been looking around for a prescription cat food that was prescribed to my ailing fur baby girl and was having a hard time finding what I needed so I called Urban pet and spoke to a very helpful woman who said they didn't carry what I was looking for but instead suggested that I consider a nonprescription alternative and provided me with a lot of really good information. With this information, I was able to do some research and determine that there are way better products on the market than the prescription stuff that they recommend for your animals. So the following day, I went into the store and spoke with the young man who was extremely helpful in explaining which food would be best based on my animals needs. I have to say that the staff here was friendly from the minute I walked in the door, they were very eager to assist and very very knowledgeable about all the products that they carried. I was extremely happy to be able to get good information and what I think is a better food for my little girl. This place is phenomena and has a great selection. I wholeheartedly recommend this store to anyone who is looking for a great pet store with a great selection and knowledgeable staff. And good prices too !! read more

I like this store and wouldn't steer anyone away from it BUT.... Small store, which I like. I feel that the staff in a small store should have more knowledge about their products than someone in a big box store like PetCo etc. Apparently not the case! I was in there today and asked 2 staff members about the diff between 2 probiotic products. I thought one was priced at around $20 and the other around $60. Big delta so asked why. One said he didn't know so asked the other who literally told me I needed to read the labels and compare the ingredients. I would have had I been able to see the tiny tiny print on the bottle. In addition, neither corrected me that the bottle I thought was $20 was actually $43. I found this out when the product was rung up. Bottle was in front of the wrong price tag. So, I say, take a flashlight and magnifying glass with you when you shop at The Urban Pet in South Pasadena or maybe just call Chewy because their customer service team has always been super helpful...they've never told me to read the label. read more

I've been shopping at The Urban Pet in South Pasadena since they opened. That came to a screeching halt yesterday. I stopped in to get my usual 4lb. bag of Instinct Raw Boost (chicken) dry dog food. It was no where to be found. I asked about it. I was told they were no longer stocking it due to price increases. Well, that's what my puggle eats. That's the food that agrees with his physiology. He knows nothing about incremental price increases nor does he care. Since he digests it well I don't care either. It seems Amazon has no problem stocking this item.
