    Onion rings and chicken nuggets
    Michelle V.

It is the biggest 'diner' I have been too. We were here for the experience. It appeared clean and secured. We saw the officer sitting in an area across from the counter. It was busy. The staff acts like would rather be anywhere else but there, as if you placing an order is an inconvenience for them. I would have been surprised if I saw even one smile while we were there. FOOD: The slaw on the slaw dog was my favorite thing. The dog itself was the smallest dog ever and pretty sure it was boiled or nuked. The burger was fine, nothing special, but better than McDonalds. We ordered onions for the burger. They gave us chopped onions on the side in a wrapper. Catsup and mustard are in packets. Chicken nuggets are varying sizes. They appeared to be deep fried, but were very soft. There was no crunch with the breading. This was the same for the onion rings. They were limp and I would guess the grease is very, very old. Old grease and sitting under a heater lamp would explain the lack luster with the apple pie and peach pie. The peach pie almost taste like sweet potato because it sat for too long. We have experienced it and have no reason to go back.

"What'll ya have... What'll ya have?" If you are ever close to The Varsity, it is a mandatory stop for me and a definite food destination you have to experience for yourself. My truck can't seem to ever pass one without stoping. I rated it 4 mainly because if the epic gameday experience and the ambiance of being able to look through the huge windows and see Bobby Dodd Stadium at Georgia Tech. I don't have a FAVORITE so I usually switch up my combo from burgers to dogs covered with chili or 1 of each and you can't go wrong with either the fries or rings but I always get the frosted orange...and on top of all that, they have lightning fast service. You won't be disappointed!

The best onion rings anywhere coupled with two distinctive chili dogs and a beverage whose headquarters is nearby.

I cannot improve upon the other reviews concerning this beloved Atlanta eatery. Some consider it a tourist trap. Some see it as a relic of a less sophisticated time. Some aren't nuts about chili dogs and fried foods. Some just don't get it. I am not among them. When you have the best onion rings on the planet as my photos demonstrate, along with one of the best frozen desserts as a Frosted Orange is, the matter is truly settled. I wish my metabolism would let me eat here every day. Alas, I have to wait until my occasional trips to the ATL to sup there. There is something about the view out the windows on the north end of the building that screams "big city." It is so easy to take for granted places such as this, as familiarity often breeds contempt. Georgians are damn lucky to have a place like this close by.

As hyped up as this place is, I expected it to be exceptional. Unfortunately, long lines, terrible food, and rather rude staff completely ruined the experience. When you have to wait that long, you'd expect fresh food, especially the fries, but they were overly greasy, overcooked, and unpleasant. The hamburger was greasy, and the chili tasted like it came straight from a can. I would not go back and would not recommend this place to anyone.

Had their chili cheeseburger and fries which were delicious, but so fun to see the history in pictures of the place. Place was super busy but lines moved quickly and food served up quickly and hot. So many celebrities pictures who'd visited the place!

Awful. Imagine the embodied energy needed to raise a cow, only for it to end up as a chili burger at The Varsity. Mom cow mooing: "Look what they did to my boy." The fries were decent. You'll need to add some salt, but they're not bad. The rest of the food was awful. AWFUL. The frozen orange tastes like medicine. The chili dog was overcooked. And the chili hamburger is an abomination that should not exist. Think a combination of a crappy hamburger and the worst sloppy joe you've ever had. I just assume this place has to be trading off a nostalgia. The service was slow to the point of indifferent. Many of the tables are dirty. But, it's huge enough that you'll probably be able to find a clean table. What'll ya have? How about some syrup of ipecac.

Wow! I've been in Atlanta 15 years and never stepped foot inside this staple for the city - embarrassing! lol None the less, with this being my first time, it bought back diner like child hood memories. Think of milkshakes, hamburgers, and hotdogs! Good ole American food. My and babe went and got the chilli dog and naked dog meals along with a chilli burger. We selected both the fries and the onion rings. He devoured my fries and the onion rings were delish! I thoroughly enjoyed the retro vibe and am looking forward to going again.

I had to make an apology to my friend group for dragging them here on a local friend's recommendation. I get it, it's an Atlanta staple and perhaps an iconic spot in terms of its ATL history, and I can respect that. But I also got to keep it real, this was one of the worst fast food experiences I've had. It's a classic old school diner vibe with the options of various hotdogs, burgers and milkshakes on the menu. And I do like its retro charm. But the food? Rough. We tried a little bit of everything and my whole group agreed it was the worst meal of the trip. Personally, I didn't hate it quite as much as they did, but let's just say I'd pick a Costco hot dog over whatever that hot dog was. The onion rings were greasy in a bad way, the burger was forgettable, and overall it reminded me of the mystery meats from my 5th grade cafeteria days... definitely not a compliment. The ordering process and pickup is very efficient. There's plenty of tables despite the restaurant being fairly busy for a weekend. It wasn't very clean though, plenty of trash and dirty/sticky floors. I'm glad I got to try it and see the history to check it off the list, but the food was not worth it. The Varsity is what it is. A legend for cheap food and if you want to know, "what ya'll have?" It's definitely a hot dog and burger. The food isn't the best but the legend behind it is great and you can't beat the prices!

My father in law grew up in Athens, Ga and a staple of his youth was The Varsity. This joint holds a piece of his heart. We landed in Atlanta this late afternoon so of course my father in law suggested The Varsity for dinner. We didn't say no. The last time we ate at the Varsity, it was a complete different set up. It was a sister location that was off the interstate. We ordered at the window and we sat outside. My father in law said it's not the vibe isn't the same as the original joint. And it's true. Coming to the downtown location is so different from the first Variety we ate at. They were busy today. They had quite a few registers open and there were multiple guests at each. A young man helped us today. He was nice. Wasn't the fastest employee but slowly but surely he got our order taken care of. While our order was being finalized, I didn't realize how big this place is! There's so many different rooms to eat at. I love all the different art piece in each room. And as big as this place was, every room was clean! For dinner I got the chili burger and chili dog combo. I grabbed onion rings and a orange creamsicle drink. My husband got the same with fries and a pc. My chili burger and chili dig were good. They weren't the biggest hot dog or hamburger patty but it got the job done. The orange creamsicle was good! It was rich she creamy. The onion rings were really salty for some reason. The fries were tasty! And for some strange reason, chocolate milk and chewy ice is such a winning combination! Peach pie is a must! Beware of first bite cause that peach filling is like hot lava. Each bite of that pie is so good! It was cool to come here and check out my father in law's past. I loved seeing all the different rooms and art work in each one of them. The food was good for a burger joint. This will probably be one of the only times I will be here so I'm happy I got to experience it.

    Mmmmm, bottomless soda!

I saw The Varsity on a food show years ago and it's been on my list ever since. Was in Atlanta for parents weekend and was beyond excited to realize I was only a block away. It's such a cool, iconic spot. From the outside it looks like it might seat 50 to 100 people, but inside, it's vast with room after room of places to sit, looks like it could easily sit 400 people, cool wall decor that is a throwback to early college days, TVs everywhere and a cool "old school" vibe. It's the perfect spot for pregame or late night happiness. You order at the counter from a pretty basic menu of mostly burgers and dogs and fries and onion rings with lots of soda choices. There had to be at least 12 lines going at one time, each cashier with their own special "attitude" of almost being exasperated to work there, a little unfriendly, but yet in an endearing kind of way. Be sure to grab your free, paper "the varsity" retro hat and wear it with pride. We ordered a couple burgers, chili dogs, fries, onion rings, and sodas. They were all better than expected. This is no high-end, five diamond, bougie, fluffy food joint, this is beyond fantastic, greasy burgers, cheesy chili dogs, incredible hand cut fries, and mounds of greasy, delicious onion rings. Exactly what you'd want from a mid afternoon, pregame, "feels like the backyard" grill session. The burger and dog buns are soft and steamy, chewy and delicious. The cheese is literally craft American slices, torn into strips and thrown on a chili dog, where the dog is firm, meaty heaven, with a massive scoop of smooth, rich, chili, and perfect "kid reminiscent" torn slices of craft American cheese, straight out of the cellophane wrapper. The burger patties are perfectly beefy and delicious, smashed down with nothing but a soft, chewy, steamy, buttered, and grilled bun slopped on a paper plate that brings back a million memories of perfect backyard grilling. Go refill your soda as many times as you'd like and hang out at a table or wooden booth in the comfy, minimalist atmosphere, surrounded by televisions on different channels in each room. I loved this experience, the atmosphere is perfect, the food is outstanding, the service was all that it needed to be, and the prices aren't bad for all that you get, could not have asked for much more. Would I go back? Absolutely! I wish this place was closer, I'd be there at least once per week. Check out the attached photos for a good feel of the joint.

The food was unbearable. Very bland in taste The chocolate shake was okay and the fries could use some salt.. still not great

Cool vibe and great service, terrible food. Burger tasted greasy and just soft, barely cooked burger. The fries are under salted, floppy, and just terrible. Apple pie wasn't bad but you mostly come for how iconic the restaurant is. Probably tastes great at 1am drunk out of your mind but nobody searching for good food should come here.

The food was good, but not the best. It was a little chaotic. They were fast with our food. There were a lot of Waymo's outside!!

Everyone has been to the Varsity. Largest drive in in the world. Get a chili dog, onion rings a frosted orange and a fried pie. French fries are great too. Or a slaw dawg or a pimento cheese dog. When they take your order they ask "What'll ya have?"…

I originally ordered one chili slaw dog and after inhaling it, I mean eating it, I ordered a second. (I had will power to leave after the 2nd one or I would closed the place down). The place is quaint and full of localness and charm. Be warned, there isn't a cloth napkin within 20 miles of the place. There are several rolls of paper towels and tear off what you need. My fellow Yelpers tipped me off to the kick the chili has. And kick it is. It is a slow burn that sneaks up on you. Fortunately, I had a smear of chilled slaw on top of it. The dog is a remarkable color red and the bun is steamed and it is wonderful! I ordered a side of onion rings- they were fried to order and while tasty, not the star of the show. My beverage was served in a bucket, 32 oz styrofoam cup with crunchy ice cubes. Again, wonderful. There was a steady pace of person ordering at the counter and the phone rang for pick up orders. And, as the sign says- Cash Only. The prices will not break your bank.

However, I also love great food prepared well, this is where Brandi and I diverge a bit. Located just north of Marietta square, it can be easy to miss, just watch for the railroad tracks that cross Church St. Parking as mentioned by others can be very tight, and you enter the lot from the right of the restaurant and circle around. My visit was at the beginning of the lunch rush, so parking was tight, but I could still find a space. Inside, Brandi's drips with history - the real kind that tells you that not much has changed in 20, 30, maybe 40 years. But it's not in that clapped out way, well worn like that favorite pair of shoes you've resoled three times and refuse to get rid of because they fit right and are so comfortable. Seat yourself at one of the handful of 4 top tables, or, at the 15 or so lunch counter stools. No menu is provided other than the one over the register - and remember, it's cash only. The menu is simple - hot dogs, hamburgers, fries, onion rings, soda, and sweet or unsweet tea. Grabbed my seat at the bar, and Brandi herself helped me. She, along with every single person working there were as kind and helpful as could be - a lost art for what Brandi's is, a quick serve place to grab an unpretentious and inexpensive lunch. Everything comes with white onions, mustard, and their chili - you can add cheese, or, ask for any of those items to be left off if you prefer. My move is to always try things the way the chef intended first, then modify next time around, so I went for the dressed up dog, and also a cheeseburger with the onions, mustard, and chili. Food was served quickly, maybe within five minutes of ordering with the four folks behind the counter working in that way where you know they've been doing this for a hot minute - everything and everyone in their place. Lots of regulars known by the staff - it's say the average age during this weekday lunch was pushing 60. This is where things start to slip a little at least for me. Brandi has kept things the same, including what ingredients they use. As such the hot dog is a red variety (hello red dye #3), and is a standard size dog (not a jumbo or foot long). White onions were crisp, the cole slaw a bit creamier that I'd personally prefer (but I found it worked really well like that on the dog), and then the chili. I was warned, as everyone is, that it is "very spicy". For my palette, I didn't find it to be particularly spicy although it had some zip that snuck up on you. I'm sure the cole slaw kept a little of that heat at bay. The hot dog itself, to me, just didn't have a lot of flavor which I guess is ok if the point is the toppings. It also was essentially room temperature which I found quite surprising given it was lunch rush, not sure if that was an anomaly or normal. But hey, for a couple of bucks, literally, I wasn't expecting a gourmet Snake River Farms Wagyu monster hot dog. This is where the price vs. quality index comes in to play. Now, the burger on the other hand, honestly, it was a mistake. I'd somehow expected them to have been griddle cooked and therefore have that well seasoned griddle char that so many old school flat tops in the hands of pros can deliver. This was a grey, not crusty, small patty that almost seemed steamed to me - if that's your jam, awesome, just isn't mine. As with the dog, almost none of the flavor of the ground beef came through - it was really overwhelmed by the chili. The hamburger bun was also kinda hard which I don't know if that's by design, or an indicator of buns that have been sitting around a while. Last up - fries. Reviews I'd read talked about them being crispy and well seasoned. Mine came out lukewarm and kinda flabby, and no hint of crispness anywhere. I might have ordered wrong as the onion rings others had looked good. Not much on the seasoning side either. So - all in, it had that very old school locals place with a lot of history to it vibe, and was nearly packed during lunch which is great to see these days with food and labor costs what they are for restaurants. On the food side, I'd say for the (very low) price, I'd go back and I know now what I'm in for. My tip off should have been the regulars sitting around me downing 2, 3, and even 4 dogs - no burgers I could see. And the staff - just honest, really friendly folks, working their tail off to serve up a piece of Marietta history. Had the dog come out hot, the fries been crispy vs. soggy, that would definitely bump them up a star. The burger, I'll chalk that up to my not reading the room....

The onion rings were good too, just served warm. I thought they were making them fresh since the front counter girl yelled back that she needed three orders of onion rings. The service was ok...just like any other fast food restaurant these days. We really don't expect great service from the front counter workers anymore and Skip's was no different. (I will rave on my reviews when I do get great customer service.) We had a group of seven so we had to eat outside as the biggest table inside only seats four and we didn't want to sit separately. It's in a food hall so where it's at you have free parking. It's a really nice building and it looks like it was a food hall building that won some awards for aesthetics so it's very nice to look at. You'll come in and there's nobody to greet you, but there are people walking around and people behind the stalls and you have plenty of options to pick from. And it's kind of a multi-room situation because one part of the establishment has a lot of the food hall stalls and the other part of it has a couple stalls, some rooms you can probably reserve, and a very large bar. They have plenty of specials on some signage screens so if you go in just be aware of that. They have events like happy hour and music being played on a live situation and some other thing so just keep that in mind. Anyway, specifically about the hot dog situation, I ordered and got a beeper when it was ready. I got it and it was okay. It seemed like it was more chilly than it was dog. And because I'm from Michigan, I'm very critical on what a Coney dog should be like. Do you want the hot dog to be covered but not drowned in the chili. So not that it's bad but as you can guess this got pretty messy LOL. I thought it was tasty. It's not like home but it was pretty good. When I try other hot dogs from there, I would actually. I definitely would. It was a pretty good experience because I got the wok and see what other places were there so that was nice. But I had to do the Coney because it reminded me a little bit of home LOL.

I ordered ahead for pickup, and the transition from arriving to walking out with my food was effortless and perfectly timed. The establishment itself is exceptionally clean and well-maintained, creating an inviting space the moment you step through the door. What really amplifies the vibe, though, is the hospitality. The staff is incredibly friendly, professional, and attentive, which sets a fantastic tone before you even take your first bite.As for the food, the execution across the board is outstanding. I tried three distinct regional styles, and each brought its own unique character to the table. The Carolina Slaw Dog is a beautiful balance of textures, pairing a juicy, perfectly grilled sausage with a mountain of crisp, cool, and tangy coleslaw that cuts through the richness beautifully. The New Yorker plays the hits flawlessly, topped with robust, savory sauerkraut and a sharp drizzle of mustard that delivers that authentic, classic snap. My absolute favorite of the lineup, however, was the Chicago Dog. It is a vibrant, color-packed masterpiece loaded with the mandatory neon relish, crisp pickle spears, fresh tomatoes, and that essential dash of celery salt. Every single bite hits the perfect harmony of salty, sweet, and tangy flavors. You cannot skip the sides here either. I ordered a mix of both the regular and sweet potato fries. The regular fries are golden, perfectly salted, and boast a flawless, shattering crunch on the outside while staying light and fluffy inside. The sweet potato fries provide a stellar contrast, featuring a beautifully caramelized exterior and a tender, naturally sweet center.Whether you are a hot dog purist or looking for a creative twist on a classic staple, this spot delivers on quality, cleanliness, and stellar customer service. It is a highly recommended addition to your local food rotation.

I visited this location regularly, often twice a week, because it was convenient to my job, and I genuinely wanted to support a Black-owned business. Unfortunately, I had an interaction with someone I understood to be the owner's wife that left me feeling deeply offended. During that interaction, I felt that my character was unfairly questioned and that I was accused of having an inappropriate relationship with her husband simply because I was a loyal customer. Whether intended or not, the experience was humiliating and completely changed my opinion of this establishment. No customer should leave feeling personally attacked or disrespected. I can no longer recommend this location based on how I was treated, and I hope management takes customer concerns and professionalism more seriously.
