I have been on weekends and of course its bustling but this time I went on a Monday morning and it was so calm! Easy to get a table and enjoy some homestyle food in peace. We got seated and got some classic diner coffee to start. For the meal, I got the bacon egg and cheese biscuit and shared the skillet french toast with the table. This is truly no frills which is why I love it. Great breakfast and 4 us of ate for $60 which felt like a great deal. 3.5 Stars I was 'today' years old when I ate at the Silver Skillet. I've heard about it forever! It is older than me... began in 56 and sold in 67 to the Decker family. Ironically, I'm working on a movie production which allowed me a gap in my schedule to stop in for a quick breakfast. I say ironically because I was not aware TSS had become such an iconic set for some well known movies and series over the years. [Yes! I live in a box!] I imagine TSS was the "go to" place for locals in years past. It imagine it still is for some because it is somewhat convenient, has decent parking, and fairly easy to get in and out. In midtown ATL, this is huge!! I sat at the counter and my order was taken immediately. My water and cup of coffee was placed in front of me immediately. The nostalgia was undeniable and I observed the front wait staff seemed happy (inconceivable!). I found myself grinning to myself at their small talk and humor. I ordered a bacon, egg & cheese biscuit (served open faced) with a side of hashbrowns. My food was served hot straight from the grill. My only regret was not ordering toast because the biscuit, to my disappointment, was not homemade. I compare it to the Mary B's Frozen Biscuits I use to buy when I wanted a biscuit but didn't have time to pull out my wooden bowl or had no buttermilk in the fridge. Two clean, single occupancy bathrooms for paying customers are assessable from the outside and entering through the door to the kitchen. That was interesting.. I imagine the building has not changed much over the years. Overall, I enjoyed my visit, (check it off the Bucket List ) but the ($16 + $4 tip) for my breakfast might make me consider The Waffle House before returning for a second visit unless eating for lunch or the Homemade Lemon Ice-Box Pie voted one of the "5 Best Pies in the USA". I went with their signature country ham served with red gravy, scrambled eggs, and biscuits. Now, if you've never had country ham, understand that this isn't your average breakfast ham. Country ham shows up with attitude. Salty, rich, packed with flavor, and perfectly balanced by the red gravy. I've been coming to The Silver Skillet for breakfast a few times now because I wanted to try a variety of things on the menu, and I can confidently say this place is special. They're about to hit 70 years this May, and it makes sense the second you walk in. The inside is about as classic diner as it gets. Nikki has been my server multiple times, and she's amazing. She's usually singing or whistling along to whatever music is playing, and it honestly puts you in a good mood without you even realizing it. Service like that is rare. Food-wise, I've tried several things now, and everything has been great, but here are my top standouts: The catfish is one of my favorites. It comes in strips, fried perfectly, and packed with flavor. Chicken and waffles are excellent. The waffle is crispy on the outside and soft inside instead of fluffy, and it works really well. The chicken itself is seriously flavorful -- not just crispy, but seasoned really well all the way through. But the biggest surprise for me: The country ham with red-eye gravy. I'm not exaggerating when I say this might be the best ham I've ever had. It's thinly sliced, so you don't have to deal with a thick, chewy cut, and it's full of flavor. The red-eye gravy that the ham is marinated in (which I was told is a family recipe) takes it to another level. They also give you extra on the side to dip. If you mix that ham with over-easy eggs and hash browns, then grab a bite with a biscuit... that's one of the best breakfast bites I've had in a long time. And to top it all off, it just pairs perfectly with a nice, cold Diet Coke. Something about that combo just works. And to be clear, it's not just one or two good items -- everything I've had here has been great. I've also tried the omelet, the chicken biscuit with egg and cheese, and the country fried steak, and they've all been consistently delicious. We found ourselves returning to Silver Skillet, 14th St., Atlanta, not once but twice during our visit. We would have gladly stretched our stay for a third round. There's nothing fancy or dressed-up about this place; it is, in every way, a classic diner, and it has carried nearly 70 years of history with pride. Both mornings, our two-egg plates were cooked exactly as we hoped. Simple, hot, and right on target. The people elevate the experience though. Larry served us on day one, moving with the ease and warmth of someone who has greeted guests here for more than 35 years. The first time we visited here the power went out as soon as we sat down. We were able to get some coffee but decided to come back on another day. This is a very laid back spot. Feels like the local diner where everyone knows each other. The chicken was fried to perfection and I love crispy hash browns. Our waitress was very nice but I didn't like how long our food sat in the window. Because there door was held open there were a lot of flies inside and flying around the serving window. I ordered the two-egg breakfast plate with applewood smoked bacon, toast, and hash browns (you can substitute the grits that come with it for an extra cost). A classic breakfast at a classic Atlanta diner. While on a Saturday out with my partner on our way to the High, I was craving a big breakfast and wanted to try somewhere new. Although the Silver Skillet may not be "new" in the city, it was new to us. After looking at the Yelp reviews and pictures, it seemed like it'd be a great choice for a bite to eat. Although the parking lot wasn't massive, we found a great spot right up front as soon as we pulled in. Based on the reviews I expected that we'd have to wait a bit to be seated, but luckily we were quickly whisked off to a table in the front and out of the frigid cold. The place was packed! Seems like we visited at the perfect time because later on there were folks coming in in groups. We were promptly greeted by a sweet woman and put in our drink orders before setting our eyes on the extensive menu. Note: If you go for a cup of juice, go for the large because luckily I was warned that the small is very small but the large wasn't huge either. I liked that the menu didn't leave us (aka me) struggling in my indecisiveness, but offered great variety for diners alike. My bf decided to go with a veggie omelet w/cheese grits, salsa on the side and biscuits, while I went with fried catfish + eggs + grits and a pancake. I'm eating for two so please don't judge! We got our food in about 15 minutes which wasn't terrible as we didn't expect fast food. My pancake was delicious!! So light and fluffy, it covered the entire plate and was the perfect portion. Our grits were cooked well but pretty bland, which is understandable as restaurants can't mass produce dishes like that with as much butter and spice since everyone can't handle that. However I thought $15.95 was a bit much considering the paper thin pork chops that came with. Now the food was great. Then came the other shocker. I recieved my bill,witch was almost $24. But then i did some investigation to see they charge $4 extra if you order hashbrown instead of grits. I had got the impression from my waitress that it was either grits or hashbrowns. I was not aware it was a up charge,and was not informed. However I shall return during the week, one day for lunch. I might like to add this little piece of advice too. This resteraunt is very famously known for having movies filmed here. I would advise you to make sure its open before traveling. They are known for being closed due to filming from time to time. I ordered the ham steak with red eye gravy, soft scrambled eggs and a biscuit that came with gravy (on the side). My friends ordered an egg and cheese sandwich and corned beef hash with eggs and grits. They gave us a full basket of delicious warm and fluffy biscuits but unfortunately I found the gravy to not be very tasty. The soft scrambled eggs were cooked perfectly and the ham was super salty, as expected, but very delicious. Service was attentive and delightful and the bathroom, which you have to go through the kitchen to get to, is shockingly pretty. Go take a peek. First time visiting this spot in Atlanta. Came here for brunch, on my birthday. Last visited: July 2023. Parking is sufficient, and it's available outside the restaurant. Our table ordered: - Chicken and Waffles - Pancakes w/ Hash Brown Fries (?) - Orange Juice The service was prompt and no issues with it. I got a note and paid the tab at the front counter, while leaving. The indoors seating and atmosphere was just so-so, nothing special. Other than, apparently there are photos of famous people who've visited, as celebrities and actors such as Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson -- and some other folks, whose name I'm drawing a blank on now -- have visited. Food was great, nothing extraordinary. Chicken was nice and went well with the waffle. There was a lot of maple syrup and butter packets provided, but we didn't use a lot of them. I only used one syrup packet, and all butters -- if memory serves correct -- and then left the rest. We actually stacked about seven or so of the unopened maple syrup packets, one atop another. So, yeah. All said, food was decent here and was filling at the least. But it was nothing exceptional. We arrived early, so we had to wait a bit, but a line was already forming outside. What were we getting into I thought. Once the gate opened and they let us in, we jumped back to the roots of Atlanta. Old school tables, floor and bar, were visible to all. The restaurant was packed within minutes, but the staff was ready. They worked together to get coffee out. When it was time to order, I wanted to try everything. Starting off with some southern conversation as she then took our order. It didn't take long for the food to arrive. It was hot and the smell alone made me hungry. But what I wasn't prepared for were the grits! They tasted the way my mom made them. They were incredible. That with the biscuits and sausage, made me remember being eight again eating breakfast with my family. This place was special. After, they dropped the check and asked us to pay at the counter. No problems. The omelette was delicious and so was the toast and I got multiple coffee refills without having to ask. Hash browns were good too but a little overcooked. Water with ice immediately. Stepping through the steel doors was like stepping back into the '60s (I didn't see a jukebox) but the long counter, stools and booths with ceramic tables took me back. Not to mention the old faded photos of what looked to be former presidents. As expected, service was great from a mature rosy cheeked "aunty" who juggled many tables swiftly. She took our order, closed out another table and made coffee at the same time-Gotta love a good/fast server! We kept it simple with the Lonely Eggs platter but chicken & waffles seems to be the star here as everyone had it. I found this place on Yelp but didn't look at the reviews in detail. Saw the menu had the food and price point I was looking for (other things near the train station seemed very trendy and I was looking for more diner-style) so I added 30 minutes to my walk in order to head over, having no idea this was a destination diner. I grew up in an area where diners were common but they aren't where I live now, so it was a great feeling walking in the door. This one is definitely the epitome of diner. I had corned beef hash, grits, and biscuits with gravy. I thoroughly enjoyed all of it. My server was lovely and the food came out both quickly and hot. It was about 9am on Saturday and full but not packed. Everything about my experience made it worth the extra walking. read more
