The Silver Skillet in Atlanta falls firmly into that last category. This place is an old-school Southern diner in all the best ways possible. The kind of place where the coffee keeps flowing, the biscuits arrive without apology, and calories are treated more like suggestions than rules. In fact, we took an early morning flight to Atlanta specifically to make sure we'd get there before they close at 2:00 PM. That's either a testament to how much we enjoy The Silver Skillet or evidence that we need a support group for Southern breakfast food. I'm leaning toward both. It's also been featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, which usually gets my attention. But unlike some places that become famous and start coasting on reputation, The Silver Skillet still earns its following the old-fashioned way: by serving really good food. And judging by the walls and the stories, I'm not the only one who thinks so. Over the years, celebrities ranging from Samuel L. Jackson to Charles Barkley and Travis Tritt have eaten here. After this visit, I completely understand why. Whenever I'm in Atlanta, this place has become one of my regular stops. On this visit, my wife ordered the country fried steak smothered in white gravy with eggs and a biscuit. It was exactly what you want Southern comfort food to be: hearty, flavorful, satisfying, and unapologetically indulgent. Nobody orders country fried steak looking for a wellness retreat. I went with their signature country ham served with red gravy, scrambled eggs, and biscuits. Now, if you've never had country ham, understand that this isn't your average breakfast ham. Country ham shows up with attitude. Salty, rich, packed with flavor, and perfectly balanced by the red gravy. Combined with the eggs and biscuits, it was the kind of breakfast that makes you seriously consider canceling the rest of your plans and taking a nap. The atmosphere is part of the charm. It feels authentic because it is authentic. No manufactured nostalgia. No corporate designer trying to recreate a 1950s diner from a Pinterest board. This is the real thing. The Silver Skillet has survived because it knows exactly what it is and executes it well. Solid food. Friendly service. A classic Atlanta institution. I've been coming to The Silver Skillet for breakfast a few times now because I wanted to try a variety of things on the menu, and I can confidently say this place is special. They're about to hit 70 years this May, and it makes sense the second you walk in. The inside is about as classic diner as it gets. Comfortable booths, old-school feel, and a front counter with snacks, shirts, and little items for sale that just add to the charm. The staff is what really takes it over the top. Nikki has been my server multiple times, and she's amazing. She's usually singing or whistling along to whatever music is playing, and it honestly puts you in a good mood without you even realizing it. Service like that is rare. Food-wise, I've tried several things now, and everything has been great, but here are my top standouts: The catfish is one of my favorites. It comes in strips, fried perfectly, and packed with flavor. Chicken and waffles are excellent. The waffle is crispy on the outside and soft inside instead of fluffy, and it works really well. The chicken itself is seriously flavorful -- not just crispy, but seasoned really well all the way through. But the biggest surprise for me: The country ham with red-eye gravy. I'm not exaggerating when I say this might be the best ham I've ever had. It's thinly sliced, so you don't have to deal with a thick, chewy cut, and it's full of flavor. The red-eye gravy that the ham is marinated in (which I was told is a family recipe) takes it to another level. They also give you extra on the side to dip. If you mix that ham with over-easy eggs and hash browns, then grab a bite with a biscuit... that's one of the best breakfast bites I've had in a long time. And to top it all off, it just pairs perfectly with a nice, cold Diet Coke. Something about that combo just works. And to be clear, it's not just one or two good items -- everything I've had here has been great. I've also tried the omelet, the chicken biscuit with egg and cheese, and the country fried steak, and they've all been consistently delicious. They have a large breakfast menu, and I still haven't even gotten into lunch yet. Only thing to keep in mind is parking. There is a lot on the side, but it fills up quickly since other businesses share the area. If you come at a busy time, it might take a minute to find a spot. Silver Skillet is exactly the opposite of modern brunch and breakfast. Having opened in 1956 and having served as a backdrop for countless films and tv shows, it preserves the most classic diner experience that remains in Atlanta. Not only does it feel like stepping into a movie set, but the experience of being around the people who worked here their whole life and the most classic execution of every detail in preparation is what makes Silver Skillet so special. We found ourselves returning to Silver Skillet, 14th St., Atlanta, not once but twice during our visit. We would have gladly stretched our stay for a third round. There's nothing fancy or dressed-up about this place; it is, in every way, a classic diner, and it has carried nearly 70 years of history with pride. Both mornings, our two-egg plates were cooked exactly as we hoped. Simple, hot, and right on target. The people elevate the experience though. Larry served us on day one, moving with the ease and warmth of someone who has greeted guests here for more than 35 years. On day two, Victoria (or as we called her Queen Victoria - because she lives up to it) bright, gracious, and engaging. The first time we visited here the power went out as soon as we sat down. We were able to get some coffee but decided to come back on another day. This is a very laid back spot. Feels like the local diner where everyone knows each other. The chicken was fried to perfection and I love crispy hash browns. Our waitress was very nice but I didn't like how long our food sat in the window. Because there door was held open there were a lot of flies inside and flying around the serving window. A classic breakfast at a classic Atlanta diner. While on a Saturday out with my partner on our way to the High, I was craving a big breakfast and wanted to try somewhere new. Although the Silver Skillet may not be "new" in the city, it was new to us. After looking at the Yelp reviews and pictures, it seemed like it'd be a great choice for a bite to eat. Driving along the street, it would have been hard for us to miss the diner as the sign outside was big and bright. Although the parking lot wasn't massive, we found a great spot right up front as soon as we pulled in. Based on the reviews I expected that we'd have to wait a bit to be seated, but luckily we were quickly whisked off to a table in the front and out of the frigid cold. The place was packed! Seems like we visited at the perfect time because later on there were folks coming in in groups. We were promptly greeted by a sweet woman and put in our drink orders before setting our eyes on the extensive menu. Note: If you go for a cup of juice, go for the large because luckily I was warned that the small is very small but the large wasn't huge either. I liked that the menu didn't leave us (aka me) struggling in my indecisiveness, but offered great variety for diners alike. My bf decided to go with a veggie omelet w/cheese grits, salsa on the side and biscuits, while I went with fried catfish + eggs + grits and a pancake. I'm eating for two so please don't judge! We got our food in about 15 minutes which wasn't terrible as we didn't expect fast food. My pancake was delicious!! So light and fluffy, it covered the entire plate and was the perfect portion. Our grits were cooked well but pretty bland, which is understandable as restaurants can't mass produce dishes like that with as much butter and spice since everyone can't handle that. We both added our extra toppings and ate them right up. My partner said (and showed!) that he enjoyed his omelet although he thought that the salsa could have used a bit more 'kick'. I actually enjoyed the salsa as it was obviously fresh, filled with veggies and cilantro, just needed a dash of salt. I love a good southern breakfast, and Silver Skillet delivers just that. I ordered two eggs that came with gravy and cheese grits. No notes, just felt like a big warm hug. My sweet tea was perfectly sweet. Everything was exactly what I was expecting. My waitress was super kind; she really was the epitome of Southern hospitality. Though busy, the staff was always keeping guests informed of wait times and worked with the limited seating they had. Well it had been a long time since I had been here. So I decided to take a trip. I went with the idea of having some lunch. I went with the idea of having a ham steak and red eye gravy. Sadly thats on their lunch menu,witch is only served M-F(WTH). If you go on weekends,basically its breakfast,burgers and sandwitches. Since what i orginally wanted wasn't available,I settled for 2 eggs,2 pork chops,hashbrowns and toast. I ordered a unsweet tea to go with. The food soon arrived. The food looked great. However I thought $15.95 was a bit much considering the paper thin pork chops that came with. Now the food was great. Then came the other shocker. I recieved my bill,witch was almost $24. But then i did some investigation to see they charge $4 extra if you order hashbrown instead of grits. I had got the impression from my waitress that it was either grits or hashbrowns. I was not aware it was a up charge,and was not informed. However I shall return during the week, one day for lunch. I might like to add this little piece of advice too. This resteraunt is very famously known for having movies filmed here. I would advise you to make sure its open before traveling. They are known for being closed due to filming from time to time. My waitress has been working here for 23 years. So needless to say my entire experience from start to finish was great. We arrived early, so we had to wait a bit, but a line was already forming outside. What were we getting into I thought. Once the gate opened and they let us in, we jumped back to the roots of Atlanta. Old school tables, floor and bar, were visible to all. The restaurant was packed within minutes, but the staff was ready. They worked together to get coffee out. When it was time to order, I wanted to try everything. Starting off with some southern conversation as she then took our order. It didn't take long for the food to arrive. It was hot and the smell alone made me hungry. But what I wasn't prepared for were the grits! They tasted the way my mom made them. They were incredible. That with the biscuits and sausage, made me remember being eight again eating breakfast with my family. This place was special. After, they dropped the check and asked us to pay at the counter. Luckily, for small groups they have a decent number of 2 seaters so we were seated pretty easily but it's a popular spot, so expect a wait for sure. I had seen this place on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives many years ago and bookmarked it to try whenever I visited. Well, that was last weekend and it did not disappoint. I ordered the ham steak with red eye gravy, soft scrambled eggs and a biscuit that came with gravy (on the side). My friends ordered an egg and cheese sandwich and corned beef hash with eggs and grits. They gave us a full basket of delicious warm and fluffy biscuits but unfortunately I found the gravy to not be very tasty. The soft scrambled eggs were cooked perfectly and the ham was super salty, as expected, but very delicious. Service was attentive and delightful and the bathroom, which you have to go through the kitchen to get to, is shockingly pretty. Go take a peek. I got a note and paid the tab at the front counter, while leaving. The indoors seating and atmosphere was just so-so, nothing special. Other than, apparently there are photos of famous people who've visited, as celebrities and actors such as Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson -- and some other folks, whose name I'm drawing a blank on now -- have visited. Food was great, nothing extraordinary. Chicken was nice and went well with the waffle. There was a lot of maple syrup and butter packets provided, but we didn't use a lot of them. I only used one syrup packet, and all butters -- if memory serves correct -- and then left the rest. We actually stacked about seven or so of the unopened maple syrup packets, one atop another. So, yeah. All said, food was decent here and was filling at the least. But it was nothing exceptional. Did not have to ask for it. It's a small place and the day was cold so there was a draft all the time. The ambiance isn't much either. Triple D spot, well known breakfast spot for common folks and celebrities when your in Atlanta. Very friendly staff. Many regulars, several times customers would see friend and go over to talk before going to their table. The place is not big, a bit cozy, don't expect to have "private" conversation. Stepping through the steel doors was like stepping back into the '60s (I didn't see a jukebox) but the long counter, stools and booths with ceramic tables took me back. She took our order, closed out another table and made coffee at the same time-Gotta love a good/fast server! Saw the menu had the food and price point I was looking for (other things near the train station seemed very trendy and I was looking for more diner-style) so I added 30 minutes to my walk in order to head over, having no idea this was a destination diner.
