This restaurant is right off of 75, you can't miss it! There's tons of parking, plenty of tables inside, and I would say the only place I've seen post-COVID that's well staffed. I was surprised how big it was inside and it was very clean! Service was very fast, although we didn't get the 3 "what'll ya have" and our chili dogs didn't come "all the way". The chili was good and the buns were very soft. The coleslaw lacked flavor and would suggest a chili slaw dog with mustard and onions. Prices weren't bad so if you're in the area and want to try it, go for it. I would make a special trip out of the way though. read more

I was staying in Atlanta for a little with my family and we stopped at this place because we heard it was a good burger joint. I ordered a cheeseburger with some fries and onion rings. The servers were surprisingly fast and got us our food quick. I found the 1900s diner vibe of the place pretty cool. Ok it's a historical diner and all the celebs on the photo wall can't be wrong. Service was super fast and efficient. But we got there about 2:00 on a Friday- we were served the most limp, sad, barely warm fries and burgers that just squeaked by for the health dept required temperature. The onion rings were fresher and tasted fine. My husband said the hotdogs were very cheap and were lukewarm also. So if you really want to go- make sure you go at a busy time that they are making food left and right or ask for your stuff to be made again. read more

"What'll ya have? What'll ya have?" So yelled out the employees at the long order counter. We were at The Varsity to grab a quick bite to eat late in October on a Saturday afternoon before we went to go see a Georgia Tech home football game two blocks away. We had waited in one of the more than 10 lines, all of them each having more than 8 people in line. Our line moved quickly, and within 10 minutes we were at the front of the line at the order counter. That's when the employee walked away from the counter after looking at us, and didn't say anything. She just walked away. Well THAT was rude! R and I stood there ... waiting, with others waiting in line behind us. A couple minutes later, another employee further down the order counter waved her hand and yelled, "I can help the next customer here!" We quickly went to her line, and ordered: 2 chili dogs, onion rings and a Sprite for R, and a chili dog, a burger, fries and a Sprite for me. We waited at the counter while the employee got all items together and put them on a tray. I went to get a table for us to sit at while R continued waiting. I picked a table away from everyone, in the big dining area closest to The Varsity's parking garage. Since it was close to the football game start time, no one was sitting at any of the adjacent tables. R brought the tray of food to the table. The food presentation was just awful. The food was almost as bad. The flavors of the chili dogs were not good, plus the buns were firm, like they'd been sitting out for a while. My hamburger was just ok, but definitely nothing to rave about. The onion rings were greasy and limp. The fries got cold fast and were soft. I'm definitely not a fan of the food! The Sprites were good! Various dining areas to eat in, some of them tucked away. Employees try to clean up tables as soon as customers leave them. The Varsity was surprisingly clean while we were there, and the employees were quick to empty the large trash cans spread throughout the restaurant. This is a bucket list place. To me, the draw is the legend of coming to eat at The Varsity with its legacy of being in business for over 100 years. Great experience! First time here and will definitely go back. They have some original and old signage and fixtures from the 1920's which was cool to see! Yes there is a long wait like others said, but there was plenty of parking and plenty of seating so that is not something you need to worry about. We went around 2:00 pm on a Sunday and waited in line for about 25 minutes. Get the onion rings! They are the best I've ever had. The fries were also delicious. They are known for their orange drink. It tasted like a creamsicle, and I'm sure the frozen one would really taste just like you're eating a creamsicle. I don't like hamburgers so I got a hot dog, it was nothing special for a hot dog, but others in my group said the burger was amazing and definitely the way to go. read more

As a kid this was the place to come. Returned as an adult and this long time staple has slipped. They had a full staff when we arrived, so no excuse for cold food after waiting in a long line. The customer service was subpar as well. No greeting and no professionally at all. If it wasn't for the greet memories this would get one star. The inside was decent but in the bathroom ran into a creepy guy. Thought I might have to deck the leering pervert. So go at your own risk for both food and your fellow man. The Varsity is a local icon and has been in business for 95 years as it opened in 1928. They lay claim to being the largest drive-in restaurant in the world and they can handle 600 cars for their drive-in and seat 800 people inside. They have seven locations around Georgia and this is the original and two locations are also in the Atlanta airport. Some say this is the largest fast food restaurant in the world as it covers two blocks. The Varsity was opened to target GA Tech students and it is still very popular in the university area. If you find yourself in Atlanta you should try out the original location at least once to experience the great historic fast food ambiance and great onion rings. I could have sworn I read a couple of years ago, that the Atlanta institution that is The Varsity was closing! So I was excited to find out that it hadn't! I'm not sure when I first heard of the Varsity but I know it's been decades. I'm sure I've seen it on the food network etc at some point which really gets you stirred up for places like this. Of course, before I showed up here I did a little research on Yelp to prepare myself. Uh Oh! maybe I shouldn't have looked at the reviews. The reviews look like a roller coaster. Up and Down and Up and way down....! Ok, let me check the local rock star Richards review. Uh Oh. I'm going anyway and I'm prepared to just check it off my list. Well, I'm sorry to say that's all I can say. Just go to check it off your list because if the food ever was good, it was lacking on this day. I'm an onion ring guy so if all else failed I had the famous onion rings right? Greasy and I didn't finish them. So I'm going to stop here because I really have nothing to say except, I can understand the sentimental aspects of generations coming here. Is this place touristy? Oh hell yes, but if you're simply passing through downtown Atlanta set aside some time to devour dem' dogs! The lines here are long, but move very fast and the security team helps you shuffle to faster moving lines. The fam and I ordered a bunch of stuff, but I stuffed my face with a slaw dog and a chili dog. They were both delish, but if I'm here again those chili dogs are as good as eaten. This is also a certified cheap eats destination! The parking lot is huge and there are plenty of places to sit, even with a portion of the dining room closed off due to covid. Touristy? Yes! OK, I saw The Varsity Drive-In on a Triple D episode years ago. Always thought it would be a fun place to visit if we were ever in Atlanta. My son and I drove thru on our way to Augusta for The Masters, so we had to stop. We chose this location since it was the original. Had the "#2" - chili cheeseburger and chili cheese dog with onion rings, along with the Varsity orange drink. Peach fried pie for dessert. He had the same. We also split 1 slaw dog. (We're from Texas, so the slaw dog was a novelty.) Turns out, the slaw dog was pretty tasty! The other items were good, drive-in comfort food at its best. Onion rings were a little greasy, but freshly prepared / hand-battered. Just what you'd expect here. The bell-of-the-ball was that fried pie. Just wish I could have put some Bluebell vanilla bean ice cream on it! I read several of the other reviewers. Yes, The Varsity is a bit of a tourist trap and maybe not the burger snob joint some are seeking. After 95 years, they know their lane at The Varsity and they stay in it REALLY WELL. I applaud them for doing what they do and doing it consistently. If you want a gourmet dog or burger, go pay your $15-20 some- where else. Let this place be itself and appreciate it for what it is!! Hmm, I wanted to experience the true Georgia college experience and have always wanted to check this place out. First of all, I didn't expect it to be so busy. As I pulled up I saw a van full of around 20 people walking up together all excited. Seems like a cult-classic sort of restaurant. I got the double bacon cheeseburger, rings, and a diet coke. The burger looks underwhelming, and just as plain as the pictures I've seen online. I started with the rings that were pretty good, nice and greasy and I'm just not good for my cholesterol levels. Still, I finished those. Now on to the burger. I don't know if it's the worst burger I've had in some time (I've eaten Burger King recently), but it was definitely the driest. There was absolutely no juice and I had to drink diet coke just to moisten my mouth. I added mustard which was super needed. That made it a lot better, but still super dry. I was actually debating whether to take half of it home and heat if up to get some juices, but decided I probably wouldn't eat it since it didn't look good now. I finished it, almost. Well, I experienced it. I won't give a poor rating for a GA classic, but I definitely won't come back again (sober). read more

I typically don't eat here when we stop, as I don't eat meat, but did learn they offer a grilled cheese sandwich so tried that. It was actually good. We did to go but you can dine in. When in Atlanta, the Varsity is a must! I am not sure how I haven't reviewed them before yet but I have been here several times on my previous visits. Truth, the hot dogs are not mind blowing but they are good. I grew up in Michigan, right between the Detroit Coney Dog and the Chicago dog, I know a thing or two about great hot dogs. You still just have to come here. A standard chili dog with extra onions and fries or onion rings is always how I roll when at the Varsity and I am a happy camper. For me, this is like a snack or appetizer to all the other amazing food spots that Atlanta has to offer. The attitude here is part of its charm. People that knock it on reviews for not being the greatest burger/hotdog experience of their life are like those annoying people that like to complain that their toenails are not symmetrical. They just annoy you. The staff will yell at you. Yes. Get over it. They will try and expedite your order because they have 3,000 people behind you. Get over it. They are not rude. They are BUSY!!!!! Also get one of the hats on the register. The Chili Cheese burger and Chili dog combo is a must. As are the onion rings. And the fries. And the Slaw Dog. And OMG just order everything!!!!! I just moved to Atlanta , always have seen this place in passing but today I decided to stop by and try it. I initially came specifically for the fried peach pie , but I saw they had chili dogs and how could I pass that up? I ordered a #1 combo which was the chili cheese dogs , and that came with fries. The man behind the counter asked if I wanted fresh diced onions for the dogs , which of course I did. Lol. My beverage of choice was the Varsity orange , which was an orange drink. Little did they know I'm an "orange drink" connoisseur. It was very refreshing and the slivered ice they use was a plus. The chili cheese dogs were ok , small but efficient. I'm glad I had those onions to add some texture and zing to them. The fries really carried the combo , because they were super fresh and crispy. Like I couldn't stop eating them , but I had to leave some room for peach pie , right? The pie filling was great , but I thought it could have been a bit sweeter. Maybe a glaze of something would have did it but it wasn't bad. I also thought it would have a fried texture but it seemed more like a baked texture. All in all , it was a cool little experience. The one thing I'll say is I will never ever be returning to the varsity... to be honest, it was absolutely horrendous. I got a cheeseburger with bacon and the burger look like it was from a great value box they either put in boiling murky water or they popped it in the microwave for five seconds. Not to mention that the staff was extremely rude and disrespectful. Honestly had the worst time. I understand they are busy all the time, but the tables were really really gross. There was ketchup and mustard smeared all over the napkin box. I felt like I was eating in a nasty and gross high school cafeteria. I do not recommend coming here. read more

It didnt live up to the hype for me. We were next in line and still waited a good minute to place our orders. There was a mix up w the 2 orders before ours. When we went to sit down the staff that was "cleaning" was barely cleaning. She was just gently slapping the cloth across the table. Then used the same rag to wipe down the condiments. Stopped by the famous "The Varsity" on a trip to Florida with the wife in kids in 2017. The view of the Olympic torches from there may be the best I've seen in the city. The food was amazing I got a #1 classic and the kids got hot dogs. We all loved it. The line was insanely long. Craziest line over ever seen for a fast food type setup. Not worth it. I've lived in Atlanta for a few years and my friends always told me The Varsity wasn't worth it but I wanted to try it. They told me it wasn't even worth the try. So when we had out of town guests I figured it was my opportunity to go with them. Well do I regret it. The burgers are TINY. The Patties are tiny and there is no way three patties would even fill me up. It wasn't even good. The bacon was literally a QUARTER OF A SLICE of bacon. Not worth it. Some people rave about this iconic 100 yr old eatery in Atlanta, but not me! Our food was greasy & cold. I ordered a chili dog which was terrible, meat and chili was cold, almost blah and tasteless. Onion rings were luke warm & greasy, too. My brother-in -law's burger was okay. One reason the food was cold is because we had to wait 10 minutes for the burger, while the rest of the order was sitting & getting cold. You would think they would wait for the burger, then time the other items so everything is hot. I'm from Detroit & THE VARSITY cannot compare to our Coney Island hot dogs! Dinner time, decided to check out Varsity. Wednesday night, a little slow.There was plenty of sitting in the restaurant. The procedure is that you walk up to order food. I ordered the combo meal. 2 dogs, fries, and a pop. Note that you get free refills. So i just walk up to the counter. The guy takes your order and prepares everything. Grabs the dogs, fries, and pop. Your catsup and mustard are at all tables. So you're good. All in all, I probably won't go back. It's a hot dog. Nothing special, however, if you've never been there. Check it out! At least once. I am always reminded of the football games I attended across the interstate at Tech and the meals we had here afterward. Sports on the TVs make it a fun environment to eat and catch up on the games. In an ever changing world, the food here has been consistent since I can remember. The food is greasy as ever but still delicious.
