Favorite brewery in Richmond - both from an ambiance perspective and a quality-of-beer perspective. So many options (see expansive menu pics) - and plenty of unique flavors, ESPECIALLY if you are a sour or stout lover like me. They'll let you try anything - and I wish I could write a review for the ones I tried too, but alas I am not that much of a tryhard. 10/10 would recommend the "Mood" and "Arctic Crypt" - a flavorful Hefe and a uniquely sweet + smooth stout respectively. The interior of this place is HUGE - plenty of seating, space for events (they had some artists/vendors there too!), as well as outdoor seating for the summer! Staff was super friendly and catering to our taste - let us try everything and was very patient with some very indecisive people (i.e. us LOL). We had heard whispers of this place from our friend who is a self-proclaimed beer enthusiast - and honestly it showed up. Veil Brewing has a great vibe ambiance to it and great beer to boot. Check in was quick and paiess. They have an extensive outdoor space some of which is covered by a tent while the rest is not. When we went they had a pizza food truck and the cheese pizza hit the spot. Beer selection is great and I liked the saison called Weightless. read more

Hands down, definitely best brewery in Richmond. Their beers are all so delicious, whether you go for a fruity sour or hazy IP or Imperial Stout, you will be thoroughly satisfied with anything you select at Veil. This brewery is popular so reservations, especially on weekends, are a must during COVID-19. There is only seating available outdoors at the moment. When you arrive, you check-in and will be shown to your table. You scan the QR code before getting in line to order your beer. Beers are available in 6 or 12oz pours. I lean very heavily towards IPAs so I tried the yellowferrari and idontwannabu. I liked the second one better. I wish that I was able to try more of their beers while in Richmond, next time. The beer is excellent. Line to get the beer is way too long. Albeit it was a nice weekend with beautiful weather, but still. The Veil Brewing specializes in IPAs with other styles mixed in. I tried a gose and I think a sour ipa: blueberry Kevin and never never weak weak. The never was my favorite, a collaboration with a juice company. It has a nice strawberry flavor without being too much. The blueberry Kevin was in-your-face blueberry with sour ipa following it up. Both were really good. My husband had two IPAs and liked them both. The atmosphere and decor are nice and the outdoor area is defined by shipping containers and overhead screens. It was 80ish degrees and we felt totally comfortable in jeans. I like The Veil Brewing but they need more staff to keep the lines down. It's bad when you spend more time waiting in line than drinking the beer...and I'm a slow drinker. read more

Came here on the way to the Squirrels game on Saturday night and had a beer while catching up with a friend I hadn't seen in awhile. There was a big outdoor area that seemed lively and busy. There were people with their dogs outside having drinks. My friend and I sat inside next to a stuffed bear. There seemed to be lots of extra space and ample amounts of seating, inside and outside. Don't remember what beer I tried but it was one of the best I'd had in awhile. Line for beer wasn't that bad. Couldn't help but notice a lot of the women drinking here were dressed almost exactly the same: high-waisted jean shorts, sleeveless shirt, and their hair up in a bun or ponytail. This must be the style for women in Richmond. I'll come here again at some point. read more

I did a pretty substantial tour of several NC and VA breweries. This was my favorite hands down. I've only been once, but this may already be my favorite VA brewery. One important bias to note: I can't stand how overdone barrel aged stouts are nowadays so when I find a whiskey stout that is "done right" from my perspective I get pretty excited. "sleeping forever" is fantastic and definitely on par with the seasonal dark stouts at Heliotrope (another fav of mine) . Aside from stouts I sampled a ton of DIPA and IPA that were all excellent. I think regardless of preferences anyone would agree the brewers here top notch and know how to execute whatever they set out to do. It made me think of the nashville music scene where everything sounds amazing even if it's not a genre I get into. read more

I got birria tacos. They were flavorful and good but a bit too much fat on my meat. I tried the painkiller drink and it was amazing. I don't drink beer but this tastes like a smooth cocktail. I don't know how the servers are because we ordered and took our food and drinks upstairs. The place is huge , very clean. I was lucky enough to drive through Richmond on my way to Baltimore only to find out that The Veil had re-opened just that day! I typically plan my trips around breweries I want to visit, and this one had been on my list for a while, but Richmond had never really been on my path. Because of COVID, we could not sit inside, and it was pretty unbearably hot outside to sit in direct sunlight. Thankfully I was able to find a nice shaded corner and enjoy a delicious lager with raw wheat and rye that was out of this world, and a great IPA. I was unable to experience the full inside, but my experience was great! I plan to go back asap. read more

The Veil Brewing Company is a large brewery in Scott's Addition. Due to the size of the line on a Saturday afternoon in November, my guess is it's very popular. Here's what you should know: 1) They brew many of their beers in house. They don't offer flights, but you can sample everything on their menu for free if you want. They have a drink fit almost every preference. I'm a sour ale fan and they had several on tap. 2) There's plenty of room inside and a large patio outside. When we went, they had two food stands outside. They also sell a few light snacks on their menu. If you like beer, this is a great spot! read more

For context: I'm a 20+ year home brewer and a fan of beer with well over 4K individual Untappd checkin's from years of global travel ....I kind of know what gross beer is. AND I know how profitable this business can be...with a party of 9 . Anyway, my objection is that I I purchased a 6 oz that I found to be disgusting; I tried to turn it in and ask for something else. First the tender smart ass'ed a response, then said he would have to charge me for another 6oz pour. They wouldn't give up 6 oz for serving a crummy beer? When an American from Bethesda, MD goes to a place like Picton, Ontario Canada and the brewmasters at All My Friends tell you that you need to go to The Veil, it is hard to question the 2 hour drive South (from Bethesda, 11 hours from Picton). Yet, I did, and I didn't actually go until I happened to be at an event in Richmond, VA. Whispers and mythology can over-hype breweries, especially when coming from the usual friends whose baseline for good beer is Miller Lite, but when the recommendation is coming from legitimate beer-lovers, investigation is warranted. The Veil lived up to all promises and expectations, and even the hype of the beer aficionados at a rural Canadian brewery. Beer = awesome. Food truck (not sure which one, but had fried beef) = solid and delicious. Hospitality = makes me want to drive 2 hours just to hang out and have a beer, pick up a case, and drive back (or go down, catch an Uber, and stay the weekend). I think definitely worth a several-hour trip for anyone that loves good beer. read more

Coming to this brewery I'm pretty sure I died and went to sour beer heaven. Located in the trendy and brewery heavy Scott's Addition area of Richmond, this brewery definitely fits the bill. This brewery is predominately sour and IPA heavy but every single beer I tried was delicious. They also offered several of their sour beers as slushees which is perfect for the remaining summer weather. They are a very popular brewery in the area but manage the crowds and lines well. They have a designated line for people looking to only buy merch or packaged beers to go, and then instead of having to fight at the bar they have a designated line for ordering beers to drink here. They have inside seating as well as ample outdoor seating. They have food trucks to provide food options and have regular events and beer releases. The staff was all very friendly and eager to provide recommendations and samples. Definitely recommend checking out this brewery if you're in the Richmond area, and I even brought home some beers to enjoy later. read more

Love visiting here to try their fruity options every time we're in Richmond. Another short visit but it was great! Covid update for people: you need a reservation to get a table and drink. We arrived right when they opened and i told the host we want 1 quick one and she had a few spots in the sun and said we could stand there with our drinks if we didn't mind the heat. I thanked her since we just wanted 1 and then we're leaving. The new flavors were delicious as always and we bought some beers for the road as well. Reservations can be made via their website or you can order your to-go beers via their website as well or walk up and order to-go's. Me and a friend stopped in for food. I got the Bierria tacos with a side of rice and she got the Carne Asada tacos . I've tried 5 places in the Richmond area and these are the best !!! Also, the rice taste pretty authentic. Try their green and brown salsas , they pair perfectly. 10/10 read more

My review is based on the atmosphere inside of the brewery as there was no seating open outside. The patio did look awesome. It is just not my cup of tea to see taxidermy all over the wall including a zebra. There was at least 7 stuffed animals all around you, place is painted black, and there is very little lighting. At one point we were drinking a bright red (fruit) gose and strange music started playing. Gave me the vibes of drinking sacrificial animal blood. I just loved The Veil! It has a welcoming vibe and fun atmosphere. It feels established in the community and is spacious enough to hold large groups at long tables or on plush chairs inside, as well as a nice outdoor space. They offer small (6 oz.) or large (12 oz.) pours and an orderly purchase queue to minimize line cutters. My friend and I ordered our 6 oz. peach goses at the same time from different associates. Mine ended up being a significantly more generous pour, and my friend wasn't too happy about that (I shared my beers with her later on so it evened out, but still). Maybe they need a more precise measuring system? Of course I didn't mind my pour size. That beer was delicious! In fact, I probably should've just ordered the 12 ounce. it was that good. I later ordered their farmhouse and helles lager, and enjoyed both of them -- but not as much as the gose, of course. Bathrooms are clean. Staff is friendly. Seems a can shortage is common (they were sold out during my visit). They also didn't have all the T-shirts advertised on the wall. Beyond those small flaws, I'd still say this is a must-visit brewery if you're visiting Richmond. Top-quality stuff is being brewed here! read more

Well, coming here was a last minute decision based on a non beer drinker re recommendation, I'm happy I checked it out for my self. The vibe is very casual, located in an industrial area of Richmond which adds an element to the interior setting. I'm not sure how often they rotate their taps, but on this particular day, the majority of their options were IPA's, so if you like them, you'll be in heaven! I'm not much into IPA's my self, so I'm am glad they had a few other options, decided to go with the Maple Coconut stout which was rich and flavorful, I highly recommend it if you like dark beers . The bartender who assisted me was very helpful and understanding that it was my first time and gave me plenty of time to decide and most of all, gave me a few small tastes before committing. They don't serve food but a food truck is on the premises, South American inspired, lacks flavor though! I would not eat them again, UNLESS, I haven't eaten all day and they were the only option around, thank goodness for food delivery and avoid drunk driving! The Veil is definitely the trendy hipster place to drink beer and have a somber time because of the decor. We came here during the heat wave and the inside was packed, with a huge line to order. We decided to risk the heat in the shade and sit outside. In the heat the black parts of the seating does heat up so if bringing children, be careful. I do like the outdoor area as it was pretty unique and not just generic picnic tables. Beer list has a lot of sours and a few beers that came frozen, which is very unique. I was trying to avoid the sours and most of the other options were IPA, so if you don't like either this brewery may not be for you. The one annoyance of this place was that they didn't have a water station, which on a hot day, is needed. This wouldn't even be that annoying but the fact was the guy who we asked about free water was obviously bothered we were asking about water while he was really busy. If there was a self serve water area, this would avoid employees having to bother to stop cleaning/serving to serve anyone water. Also this place serves beer in wine glasses which is probably the most hipster thing about this place. read more

As a big beer nerd, the Veil has been in my top sought after breweries to visit in the US, and it didn't disappoint. This brewery is known for sours, ipas, and sour IPAs. I'd recommend getting half pours so you'll get to try more variety, even though fill pours only cost a fraction more. The place itself isn't huge, but they set up the line to order very efficiently - no need to crowd around the bar hoping to catch the bartenders attention. They have a separate check out station for to-go beers and merchandise - that being said, their to-go beer list is huge, plenty of bottle and 4 pack CSM varieties. WOOO. I've been going to The Veil for so long, I can't believe that I haven't written a review on it yet. They consistently put out bangers (good beers.) Since I've been coming, they're offerings have expanded so much. They offer a wide range of beers for everyone's palate. You like a heavy stout? They got you! You don't like beer that much, so you want a fruity somethin somethin? They got you! You're a beer snob who wants to taste every hop? They got you! Like I said, there is something for EVERYONE. They have a roomy inside as well as a partially covered outside. The lines can get pretty long on a nice day or a beer release day (Tuesdays) so be prepared to wait. The beer-tenders are all really nice and quick so the wait shouldn't be tooooo long. The beer prices range from around $5 for a 6 oz pour to $8/9 for a 12 oz pour, just depends on the beer. They always have some sort of food truck outside, and they offer small bites inside. My friends and I came here during our trip to Richmond and did a little tour of all the different breweries and this was one of the stop. I personally am not a huge beer drink, I usually like the light beers or the sweeter ones. I chose one of their frozen fruit beer because it sounded like the one I chose was sweet- it was not, it was really sour. It was hard to drink, but it was a hot day so it helped cool me down. Oh and they have paper straws! Yay save the enviroment! The staff was super helpful and patient when selecting our drink. My boyfriend asked a lot of questions and the guy let him try out a few of the beers. They were all very knowledgable about the different taste profiles of all of the beers. Had The Veil on my list of breweries I've wanted to check out for awhile now. Was recently in the Richmond area and was able to check it out. It's a great location with lots of street parking right out front in a hip neighborhood. What looked like a permanent taco truck was stationed outside although I didn't sample the food on his visit. Staff were very friendly and helpful and tended to all my needs, unfortunately COVID restrictions meant the interior was closed but the counter and outdoor setup worked fine.
