I have been to the Vig many many times but only for the first time got dinner recently. We went during happy hour on a Friday. I love that Friday happy hour runs from 3 to 7. We got there around 4:30 and it was somewhat empty but was full by the time we left around 7. I will say this place has confusing vibes between the vibe/cost of the menu and the ambiance. Overall, I thought the food was pretty good. It was definitely better than what I was expecting. I got the happy hour fried chicken sandwich (which is still $15 bleh), but I was surprised by how good it was! 8 also had an espresso martini and a mule. Great vibe! This place was great. It was low lighting giving it a nicer feel. Our waitress was super nice and friendly. Every time she came to our table she was smiling and happy (even given her unfortunate recent love life). They have happy hour from 4-7pm (I believe) which is a perk. We got a bunch of the oysters for $1.50 each as well as some drinks during HO! For our meals three of us got the Thai tuna entree which was literally just the tuna- so it wasn't exactly filling with just that- but it was good. They have a nice menu with a range of foods appealing to anyone. They also had some nice light Christmas decor which was fun. My initial visit here was enjoyable...on a recent Saturday evening so was bustling to say the least. Good cocktails-particularly the Bronx Tale, which included a spiced pear...interesting mix of a good bourbon drink. Food was enjoyed as well-various dips were tasty, and the bread and cucumber slices a good mix of chewy and crispy for bases. Spicy Feta was my favorite. Dinner-wise, the Paradise City steak sandwich was great-the parmesan aioli on the side that had pesto on top was a great topper, while the mac 'n cheese side was tangy and a good pairing. Definitely a fan of their happy hour (that ends 7pm)! The $8 cocktails are so good! The trifecta--strong, tasty, reasonably priced. They have some great hh food options as well. The southern fried chicken & fries, as well as the burger & fries, are equally filling, and comes with a garlic aoili sauce for dipping. Oysters are $1.50 each, which aren't bad. Sydney made our visit to The VIG such a great experience. We stopped in to warm up before dinner and she immediately made us feel welcome, like regulars instead of out-of-towners. The drinks were quick and perfectly made, and her personality was even better. Friendly, attentive, and just the right balance of checking in without hovering. Needed to eat after the Chicago Marathon and the was where we landed upon on our way back. Inside was very loud and had lots of football on. They told us it would be no problem. We got right in. The food was delicious. Our favorite part was the trio of spreads. We got two orders so we could try all of them. We embarked on a brunch adventure to The VIG for good food and vibes on the Fourth of July. We got the whole gastropub experience with the the rustic decor and sports-themed ambiance, which is exactly what we wanted. Our journey took flight with the Spreads. For $25, we were treated to three amazing spreads accompanied by loads of toasted Italian bread chips. Each bite was an experience - the Artichoke & Kale dip, the Brie, Date, Spicy Apricot dip, and the Pimento Cheese dip were indescribable. These spreads were the star of the show and we will be returning just for these. It was hard to beat the appetizers as we had high expectations, but The Vig did not disappoint. The Chicken and Waffles came with two fun-sized squeeze bottles with maple syrup and a hot sauce. This was delicious. Each crispy bite was heavenly. The Southern Fried Chicken Sandwich was very good but I've had better chicken sandwiches elsewhere. I would recommend the Chicken and Waffles instead. We also got a side of Pimento Mac 'n' Cheese, which absolutely slapped. For drinks, we got the Aperol Spritz and The Vig Bloody Mary. Both of these were delicious. Made a reservation for dinner here before a second city show! When you make a reservation, the restaurant has a lot of caveats about not being able to reserve tables outside, etc. but we showed up about 30 min early and they were able to seat us early and outside! I was very thankful for the outdoor table - Wells St is so nice and we were actually able to talk and hear each other. The inside is huge and very loud with lots of people hanging out around the bar. It would have been difficult to have a conversation inside, but outside was a nice place to dine. For a nicer but also pretty classic American menu this is a great spot! I like the variety of menu items here while feeling like everything would be good. Great spot to appeal to different food preferences. The service was great too. What I ordered: Moscow mule and espresso martini - both were great! Espresso martini isn't listed on the menu but it's a good one. Appetizer wings - really good flavor with a sesame type sauce. I would get them again! And they bring you hot towels with a lemon which was such a pleasant surprise!! Shishito peppers - something fun and different to try and a good level of spice without being too much. Probably wouldn't order again if I went back though Salmon BLT - yum!!! Came here for a late night dinner, mostly because it was one of the only places open that late in the area, but it ended up being a great decision. Beautiful interiors, friendly and fast service, great food and drinks. I got the chimichurri steak and we shared the brussels and shashito peppers. The peppers were the only disappointment because they came in way too much sauce. The steak was perfectly cooked and came with delicious potatoes. The Brussels were solid but not a must-try. Swung by The Vig for dinner after a show at Second City. We were a big party and they were easily able to accommodate us. Our server was awkward at first but then she quickly got around to being able to help us all easily. We tried some crisp draft beers and they were good. We tried the bread and three spreads platter with the warm spreads and all of them were sooooo good. We also tried a side of fries, cauliflower au gratin, chimichurri steak, peri peri pasta, Mexicali vegan torta and pan seared salmon. The food was surprisingly good for a sports pub. The cauliflower au gratin and keep peri pasta were a pleasant surprise. The Mexicali torta was also amazing but they should maybe ease up on the pickled onions a bit. Since my first experience at the Vig was so great I thought it would be the perfect spot to stop at for my friend's bachelorette. However, our server wasn't very friendly and kind of made the experience a little uncomfortable. The food on the other hand was DELICIOUS! We ordered various spreads and they were all very tasty. We also each had a salad (I ordered the Brussels sprouts one and it was just perfect!). The Mac and cheese was really good too but we definitely over ordered so we didn't get a chance to finish it. Okay, someone on yelp said these are best chicken wings they've ever had. I want to say that was a bold statement. The umami seasoning was good, but I've had better wings at BWW with more flavor. The vig burger was super soggy. I think the burger meat was already juicy itself, and the over easy egg and huge juicy slice of tomato just sends it over the top making it extra mushy. The bread with 3 dips... delicious! Everyone devoured them. Service was good and waitress was attentive. She even gave me a wet towel with a lemon on top to wipe my hands from the wings, nice touch. We chose the VIG to celebrate Spring Festival because their menu has several interesting things we'd like to try. Once I got inside, I regretted the decision because the place was extremely loud especially we had a toddler... Thankfully, our 2.5yo didn't seem to mind much and was dancing to the music lol We ordered several dishes: calamari (an off menu item), baby back ribs, spreads, and meatball sub. Calamari was very salty, but texture was perfect. Baby back ribs are very tender and juicy. Meatball sub was okay to me, but my husband loved it. For spreads, we picked pimento cheese, pizza fondue and brie, date, spicy apricot, which was my favorite! It might be better if the dates can be cut into smaller pieces so I can enjoy them on more pieces of bread. Overall food and service was great. My girlfriend and I walked in for brunch on a Saturday oblivious to the fact that this is a hugely trendy spot. The place was bustling nicely at 11:00 but not super packed. That changed very shortly! We ordered coffee and my girlfriend tried the mocha espresso martini which was really good and we went straight for food, as we were starving! She ordered the steak and eggs and I tried the Brisket hash, after being steered away from the California omelette by our waitress. We chose a biscuit and jam to start because we were quite hungry. I ordered the hash with a runny egg. My girlfriend ordered her steak medium rare. We were both disappointed. The steak was medium well, at best, and my egg was fried HARD. I flagged down the waitress-who was at this point running all over the place- and requested a runny egg. We had to ask for refills a few times too, but I did get my runny egg lol. My poor friend didn't want to send back her steak so she just didn't eat it, so we went a few blocks down for pastry an hour or so later. The neighborhood is super young and trendy and brunch is def about the drinks and the vibes. The DJ was really good and the music was awesome without being overpowering. There doesn't seem to be a ton of care given to the service or the food. The menu seemed kind of all over the place and neither of us particularly enjoyed our selections. If you're having a birthday and want an unlimited champagne brunch with fireworks or if you are super sure that your food Can only be truly enjoyed with an amazing DJ playing the right tunes?!??
