Really nice bakery. I bought a loaf of bread to take home. A sweet roll to eat there also cookies for my wife. Her favorite kind. Short bread. All was really good. Nice place. Some outside seating. Hands down the best bakery in Bend and yes I have been to them all. Their sourdough is sooooo good, their salads are delicious and all of the bakery items are amazing. The best part, my husband, who is sensitive to gluten can eat their breads without any issues. read more

A boutique bakery with crazy prices. I went for a loaf of striata bread after learning they supply a favorite restaurant. The bread is good, but not $8/loaf good. And that's typical of their prices. I just discovered this bakery and couldn't be more thrilled. Each time I've walked in the cashier has greeted me pleasantly, and takes time to explain the various items. The bread they make only on Tuesdays - a dark, dense bread with caramelized onions is perfect for soup. The pumpkin chocolate chip muffin, shortbread cookies, and the breadsticks are all delicious and everything else there looks to be just as amazing. I'm making my way through different options every week based on recommendations by the cashier or people in line. I'm so grateful to have a bakery like this in Bend. read more

This place rocks! I never noticed it before even though I have driven down 14th street many many times. Its just behind Balthazars mexican seafood restaurant and I will be going back often. I ordered a turkey/pesto sandwich and it was fresh and delicious. The pesto was spot on with garlic, pine nuts and fresh herbs coating my taste buds...it doesn't get much better than that. I took home a loaf of bread too which I had them slice. It's the same bread they offer you at Zydeco. Just dip in some good EVO and balsamic vinegar and you are set. I could make a meal out of this alone. I also ordered the cinnamon roll. It was flaky and buttery with just the right amount of sweetness. Next time I'm going to try the turkey with strawberry salsa sandwich. Yum!!! You can tell the owner must take a lot of pride in this little bakery and I couldn't be happier to have found it. They have never compromised on the integrity of their product, seventeen years of bread making old school to bring the best bread products to our fair community. Bill and Lauren Kurzman put in the hard work, dedication and amazing process to bring the highest quality to our everyday lives. Although we all think bread when we're discussing the Village Baker, their coffee is good, pastries are very good and I probably have one of their great sandwiches as often as I do their pastries. They truly are a stable, go-to bakery in our lovely city of Bend. My favorite breads are the striata, baguettes and parmesan cheese breadsticks (which really hit the spot!). The Village Baker makes the BEST bread in Bend. The Striata is beyond amazing and I can not find anything comparable anywhere else. My husband and I moved from Bend a few years ago and have missed Striata so much. We were in Bend a few weeks ago and let me just say the Striata is just as awesome as we remembered it. The village baker also makes some nice sandwiches and has a good selection of other baked goodies. I wish they could ship the striata to stores near me b/c it seriously is that good. read more

Coming from Portland (and before that, the SF bay area), where there are some really fantastic bakeries, I have to admit that I wasn't expecting to be blown away with the baked goods here. I wanted to try a sampling of the breakfast pastries, so I ordered the L'Orangette, cardamom brioche, caramel apple tartlette, and a ham and cheese croissant. So was I blown away? Not really, but the goods we got were better than expected, especially the L'orangette - this was fantastic. Next fav was the cardamom brioche. The tartlette and croissant were a little on the dense/heavy side, but still very good. We ended up seeing their stand at the farmer's market later in the day and picked up a baguette to eat with some cheese. Baguette was good, not my preferred style (I like a classic French, crispy baguette) and this was almost sourdough-ish in taste and more rustic in crust/crumb. All in all, better than expected and I'd come back next time I'm in town. read more

Stopped by here for a take out lunch. I bought a Garden Turkey Sandwich and the Turkey with Strawberry Salsa. Wow! Tasty, filling and full of fresh, quality ingredients!! $16.99 for both. Not sure how I feel about that price point, I think pretty good. I could only eat half my sandwich! They have take and bake items, including pie crust!! I hate taking the time to make pie crust and though Pillsbury does a pretty good job, I have now found my go to! They also have lovely bread and pastry items, but I did not buy any to take with me. Also a to go case with salads and soup to reheat at home. The shop is small. Very few tables and a bar top area to eat at. There is a separate coffee/barista area if you just need a coffee and pastry. I appreciate the 2 different ordering areas based on what you need. Everyone was extremely nice and the wait for sandwiches was fast! read more

The village Baker has excellent products. Their bread, pastries, sandwiches, and soup all are delicious. I am giving them three stars for a snarky service that I've encountered more than once, typically from the same person. I'm frustrated and sad, because their products are tasty, it's close to my office, it's a healthy and "buy local" place for lunch. I ordered a sandwich today, and it took a solid 40 minutes to get it. I understand a lunch rush, but there was no one in the bakery ahead of me. I understand if there were a lot of call in orders ahead of mine, but it would've been nice to be informed that it would take longer than what would be normal for one sandwich. When I walked in the bakery to check and see if it was ready, the woman who took my order snapped at me and said there was a line and to get outside. I reminded her that I had already placed an order and was checking to see if it was done. This was about at the 20 minute mark. Not cool.I would have left at this point but I had already paid for y sandwich. Most people were wearing masks, but they didn't have any Covid directions for customers visibly posted. Masks were not required for customers which is not cool given the current pandemic. I've had this same employee snap at me in the past when I brought in my won duarble coffee cup and ordered a latte. My cup happens to be 10 oz. and she was grouchy about it and said she only has 12 oz lattes and would charge me for 12 oz. That's fine, I wasn't asking for a discount. She's worked there for quite sometime and just isn't friendly, accommodating or nice. My other frustration with the bakery is they only use disposable packaging. If you're having soup or salad to stay (when we could dine in) they use plastic clamshells for the salad, paper bowls with lids for the soup, and plastic spoons. I would love to see them switch to more earth friendly ways. And be nicer, we are in Bend after all. read more

Yummy, yummy, yummy! I enjoy everything here from the coffee to the sandwiches. First off, the two greatest bakery inventions EVER: Parmesan Pepper Breadsticks and Cinnamon Hives. OK, first off the breadsticks are the first replacement I've ever found to have with tomato soup instead of grilled cheese. Second, a cinnamon roll made from croissant dough; Pure heaven! Original tasty breads, soups and sandwiches round it all out nicely. Then you add friendly staff and you've got a real winner! I love the turkey sandwich and the tomato basil soup is awesome. The ham and cheese croissants are the best I've had yet, but you have to act quickly, cause they don't let them sit around all morning! Did I mention the coffee? It's really hard to find GOOD brewed coffee anymore. Everyone wants to serve a dark roast and most of the time the coffee tastes over-roasted and bitter. The light roast here is one of my favorite coffees of all time. It's pretty much my daily coffee. I've been in food service for a long time, and I appreciate good quality products and good service. I've tried darned near everything that this place has to offer (with a few sandwich exceptions) and I'm a fan all the way around. The best part of this place is that they have two locations, so I can always get a good cup of brewed coffee no matter which side of town I am on. read more

I love their bread, and sandwiches. But, went to pick up a sandwich the other day and was quite surprised none of the bakers/chefs were wearing masks. Even without COVID shouldn't cooks or people with beards have on at least nets? I won't go back for awhile. I know the masks are to protect others - but I was watching as they were making food and talking- it's just normal for word spray to go onto the food. Look at your phone as you talk. read more

So grateful to have this gem of a bakery here in Bend. They make all their food with love and care and you can definitely taste it. My hubby loves their Striata, and I just love everything! They run a tight ship and we trust that they are taking all necessary precautions for Covid or even a common flu. There has not been any evidence of someone getting Covid from their food. If you are worried (as I was months ago), then best you cook at home ( as we did). Now that we have more data I feel very good about eating food cooked by people without masks. Two weeks ago I told my coworker I wanted a sandwich but was disappointed in every place I went to on the East Side. She asked if I had been to the Village Baker and when I told her I hadn't, she gave me directions. I headed over there and ordered the vegetarian sandwich and OMG IT WAS LIKE ANGELS WERE SINGING IN MY MOUTH. This has got to be the best sandwich I've had in my life. Since then, I have been back multiple times and each time I order a different sweet to go with my sandwich. The apricot chocolate covered macaroon was perfection. Everything there is amazing. I also feel this place is clean and the staff every time has been friendly. The only downside is the prices. OUCH it is pricy. But you know what, I'd rather spend $10 on a sandwich and cookie than $6 for the crap I've had elsewhere. read more

My husband and I were very pleased with the sandwiches, coffee and bread to go that we ordered. We did not try any pastries. Bread is decent but the experience in the store is always a huge pain, exacerbated by Covid. The staff are rude and it's always a wait. Other places would divide their labor, so people just getting bread, pastries, etc. wouldn't have to wait behind 10-15 minutes of sandwich preparation. Just incredible. We had the chicken salad sandwich, turkey bacon sandwich, peanut butter shortbread, and chocolate oatmeal cookie with walnuts. Every bit of that was amazing. So I went here yesterday 6/5/10 after two people recommended that I do so, one of which I went with. Maybe I am just used to going into a sandwich shop and being able to order what I want, or order a sandwich how I like it, Don't Bother at this place. The girl at the register told me ok to everything i ordered and was very unhelpful when it came to any questions. Then the "Sandwich Maker", I am only guessing this is her title, came over and told me No I can't have it that way and the bread I picked is not an option for a sandwich. Let me tell you I ordered one of the sandwiches off of their menu and asked for an extra slice of ham, and to be put on the Rosemary bread instead of white or wheat, their only two options she told me. She told me she couldn't because the ham is already portioned out per sandwich and she couldn't take some from a portion. So I said fine, charge me for a portion, to which she replied it will be two dollars, I said fine, I just want a slice of ham, and she said if I don't take the whole portion, they just throw the rest out. Is this my problem what they do with the rest, I guess so? So from there I said fine just put it all on and I will take off what I don't want. So now on to the bread portion, I asked for the Rosemary Striata bread, which I was told was fine by the front register girl and then told a firm NO by the maker. She offered no helpful solution, just looked at me to choose another bread. I made the suggestion of one of the Rosemary rolls and she said, "um, yea, ok that is fine but it is going to be a small sandwich". At this point I just wanted a sandwich and just wanted to stop having to guess or feel like I was having to convince someone else what I wanted to eat. So I said I don't care, can I please just get a sandwich? My friend ordered a cup of soup, should have been the route I decided to go I guess. We were planning on eating there, but after the condescending attitude, the unhelpfulness, and the outrageous $18 price for a small sandwich and a cup of soup, we took our food to go. Let me tell you that the sandwich was definitely not a $12 sandwich and the staff made the experience even worse, no one should have to feel like they need to apologize for how they like their sandwich. My friend who I went with, who recommended the place, was so shocked when we left, and said "Oh my god, he is a customer just make him what he wants and don't argue. Or tell what you do with the food that he doesn't eat." She said she won't be visiting again either. This place needs a real wake up call on customer service and employee attitude and knowledge of what they are selling. It's sad when you try and buy local, and this is the experience you walk away with. An overpriced, under quality meal with side of attitude from the employees. read more

I've been there three times. The breads and croissants are to die for. I bought a loaf of striata bread to take home, we ate every single morsel, but needed a tree saw to cut it. We went back for lunch and were pretty disappointed, counter staff was unfriendly, no smiling, they need to get rid of that person at the counter, there are lots of unemployed FRIENDLY people who need jobs, For lunch, everything was served in paper with plastic table wear. Well, if you might need a tree saw to cut the bread, the plastic tableware was not going to work AT ALL. Is there some tiny compromise? Is butter available? Can we be friendly? The breads are really terrific tasting. Lunch is better elsewhere. read more
