Salma hayek- delicious herbal strawberry cocktail
    Alicia H.

My drink here yesterday the Salma Hayek was literally a 9.5/10. It was so perfectly balanced and presented. A slightly sweet herbal strawberry tequila drink. I would order it again and again. My husband was very impressed by his blueberry flavored drink as well. Bartenders were smiley but could have checked in more frequently. Also the room has a pretty off putting smell to it - def need some candles or air fresheners lol. (It was much better after the bartender made a drink that she lit on fire)

Love, love this place! When you come down Adams Street and you see people going in an unmarked door, you've found The Volstead. There isn't a sign or neon lights - you have to look for this place and it's worth finding! It's a retro prohibibition era drinking establishment (hence the name) that has to be experienced. The Volstead is a classy and tastefully decorated cocktail lounge with a 1920's speakeasy theme. They have a great selection of cocktails offered with a selection of bottled beer as well. The bar is devoid of obnoxiously loud music or TVs, fostering an environment conducive to socializing and enjoying the company of friends and fellow patrons. Excellent vibe and attentive staff!

The Volstead was hands-down, the most recommended bar in all of Jacksonville. Many people told us to go here. We are from LA and no stranger to Mixology. However, this Mixology is done with that offbeat fun art student vibe. The music is great. The client tells eclectic and everyone appears approachable. This is also a great place to people watch as everyone appears smart an eclectic, and nowhere to hang. One of the best whiskey sours served up with egg white I've ever had in my life. It was strong Made well by a no-nonsense Bartender and it drank as such.

One of the most chill speakeasy's in the city. The bartenders are serious craftspeople. The Salma Hayek is an intoxicating and refreshing beverage, and its flavors transport you to a fabulous marina at sunset.

10/10 High recommended. Great spot for pre-your post evening drink. Especially pre-evening events because they have a wonderful happy hour. Love the cocktail curation and the bartenders are amazing. Come with friends or come alone bc you'll leave with new friends. Just an absolute vibe in there.

One of my favorite bars in Jax! It's a little speakeasy with dark room and old movies playing on the projector. The cocktails are delicious and bartenders really know their stuff. Menu has a lot of creative and fun drinks. Even when they are busy, the service is usually pretty quick!

One of my favorite downtown bars. The bartenders are talented mixologist. The interior is dark and sultry just like a speakeasy. Live the vibe! They offer Happy Hour 7 days a week!

Went on a weekday night, our bartender Channing was awesome. The bar was fairly busy and he held things down fr, drinks went out really quickly, and he didn't forget you as he went around the bar. Really enjoyed all the drinks we had here, we tried some holiday specials, as well as some dealer choice drinks which he did an awesome job with as well. The vibe was right, dark and friendly lit like a speakeasy should be would definitely go again.

Loved James and our drinks. The communication between bartenders was great watching them talk about who was doing what was impressive. Cocktails were great. I like the flexibility of cocktails. Would go back and recommend!

I love the Volstead. Very cozy and classy

I like the Volstead! Very cozy and classy.. it's a little hard to find when you outside they should put a sign in front so people know where to go but beside that great environment

This speakeasy absolutely stole my heart. We decided to pop in here, but first we had to get past the working barbershop in the front! Once we got inside I fell in love. You have to visit this place just to experience the ambience. We were able to grab a bit of food to snack on while there which was homemade beef jerky that is made by the bar owner's grandfather. The bartenders are very attentive and the drinks were amazing. Definitely my new favorite bar in Jacksonville and I will be bringing all of my friends here!

We were immediately impressed when we went in; lots of dark wood and a long bar with shelves and shelves of spirits. There were mostly bourbons and whiskeys. They even had a rolling ladder so bartenders could reach top-shelf bottles. We had about a 10 minute wait for a table on a Saturday for lunch. The time went by quickly and we were seated at a small wooden table. Our server, Erin, approached us quickly and took our drink orders. I ordered a Blue Moon and my husband had the WC Old-Fashioned. It was made with Evan Williams 1783 Bourbon and he said it was quite good. ($13). For food; I had the Rooster Royale which was a fried chicken sandwich with pickles and hot honey BBQ sauce. It was $16.50, and one of the best chicken sandwiches I've ever had! Even the bun was delicious! I'd planned on only eating half; but I ended up eating it all because it was so good. I also had the homemade chips which were yummy too. My husband had the Reuben which was $19. He said it was really tasty and full of meat. He commented that it didn't get "mushy" or fall apart. He had the crispy potatoes as his side and he raved about those too. We really enjoyed our meal at Whiskey Cake and would definitely return. The only drawback I can think of is that they don't seem to have very many healthy lo-cal options.

First I have to commend Christina, who was our server. A table of eight, she managed us with such grace, professionalism, and outstanding service! With a constant smile on her face, she asked us open questions and was very attentive. Not once did I have to ask for an iced tea refill because she was staying on top of it! The menu, though short with options did have a creative variety. We all tried the cinnamon roll, which I have to say was beyond, and I do mean beyond outstanding. In fact, it was the best cinnamon roll I have ever had with the toasted pecans and the sauce. WOW!! I ended up with the pancakes and eggs, and the eggs were cooked perfectly! The pancakes were were thick and had good flavor. It was a little overcooked for what I prefer, but overall, it was very good. Looking at the other options of what friends were having the food looked amazing. I am not a bacon eater, but one of our table mates had a bacon dish that she said was phenomenal. I will definitely be back

I think this might be one of their more under rated themes. If not this, then their retro them for certain. It's almost hard for me to write about their cocktails nowadays because they're always so good. I went ahead and attached a LOT of photos to this review of cocktails from the past several themes they've done as well. I just love the fact that they always have real craft cocktails, not just a minor twist on something that they're charging more for. It's worth noting that they always offer Mocktails and THC infused drinks for the non alcohol drinkers. We didn't try as many things as we usually do but we REALLY liked what we did get a chance to try. Off the top of my head, I'd say the Cabana Boy was my personal favorite. That's the whiskey sour that comes as a pairing in the Twin Palms special. My wife liked everything enough that she didn't have a favorite. If you haven't been to Grey Matter Distillery; go check out this theme because it's a good one. Then make sure to keep on eye on them because I'm guessing their Retro Theme will be coming back next and I'm always excited for that one too. They make amazing themed drinks and really put effort into their seasonal menus. The bouncer needs to chill out and get off his power trip, "I'm not just letting people in the door, I'm bouncing, don't be the first person to get bounced tonight, I'm serious." He said to a lady simply trying to follow her friends through the door because she hasn't been paying attention. Edit: the owner reached out and assured me that the issue with the bouncer has been resolved satisfactorily. The mark of a great venue is how they treat their customers, and the owner here is top notch in his dedication to making sure each customer has a great experience. The bouncer, even with the little issue I had, seems to have meant well and it sounds like a miscommunication more than anything. I highly recommend this distillery for some of the best drinks around. Try and come during one of their multiple pop ups throughout the year. I can't wait to attend retro month!

I ordered a lemon drop martini. My drink was made well and was cold. When we were seated, we looked over the menu. There menu hasn't really changed too much. We opted to start with fried pickles and split a wedge salad. My sister and her husband each had a salad. My sister had the burata and her husband had the ranch. Our apps/salads came out quickly. The wedge salad was cool and crisp. I wish it had more pieces of bacon, the bacon looked a bit sparse. The fried pickles were great. I loved the light crisp batter on them and the ranch dip had a bit of a kick to it. For dinner I got the braised short ribs, my husband and brother in law both got the chimichurri steak, and my sister got the pork schnitzel. I've been looking forward to the braised short ribs all week. I was a bit disappointed that when I bit in, it appeared to be pretty bland. Normally when I get this meal it's bursting with flavor. My husband and BIL enjoyed their steaks. My sister enjoyed her schnitzel, but said the pork could have been a bit thinner. We ended the meal with their skillet cookie. Typically the cookie comes out piping hot, but on this occassion, while the skillet was hot, the cookie wasn't. We'll give them another shot, but I was a bit disappointed this time around.
