First the good: Food is good and sitting outside near the creek on a summer day is relaxing. Now the bad part. Chris (I believe is the owner) is rude and disrespectful towards customers. I've seen him trash talk customers as they walk away right in front of other customers! This used to be our favorite place and have been there many times. Last night was the final straw. He was disrespectful to us and when we told him this used to be our favorite place, he told us too bad don't come back! REALLY??!! What business owner says that? My bride and I found the Watering Hole in a local publication and drove from Angels Camp to give it a try! Wr were on vacation and this place was exactly what we were hoping for! When we parked, there was a very cool classic car show going on in the parking lot and it did not disappoint! I must say, there was plenty of parking and the staff were super friendly and this restaurant is an extremely sustainable operation, built with mostly reclaimed wood including bar top counter built from reclaimed dead sequoia trees! Even the interior picnic style tables! The Watering Hole is very unique and the prices are very affordable because this restaurant knows how to keep overhead cost low! I want to acknowledge Chris and Mike for their outstanding customer service and knowledge of the history here! Plus their customer service is outstanding! The food is super delicious too! I ordered the Asian spare ribs with the most delicious hoison sauce and extremely meaty and tender, juicy, favorable! The Adian slaw wad delicious too! My wife very much enjoyed her burger and we shared an order of fries which were hot and crispy! I ordered a wheat beer which was delicious and my wife enjoyed a honey beer! While I have had honestly had some hit and miss dishes here, I am a HUGE fan of The Watering Hole. -Always changing food menu -40 beers on Tap -HUGE selection of craft beer in their fridges -beautiful building -live bands -great patio -plenty of parking I often want to drag my friends down to give them a try but a lot of Flatlanders are intimidated by the drive. It's a beautiful drive and worth it. Once I even enjoyed Hot Crab and melted butter with Elote corn on the side, on their Patio surrounded by snow. Lunch at The Watering Hole in Murphys was a great stop. Being off season and a bit rainy the place was pretty empty but I could tell it'd be a great place to hang out all day when the weather cooperates and maybe get in a game of corn hole. There were a ton of beer options and the menu was very varied and as they say, always changing. I got the carbonara which was made with a duck yolk and was so rich and creamy. Husband got an Al pastor bowl and he loved the pineapple salsa it came with. Fries for the table were hot and perfectly seasoned. Not service dog friendly. Rude cashier and rude bar tender! Harassed us to explain why I had a service dog. Even after I showed my dog's certificate they still gave a hard time and said my service dog was not a service dog. Which was a trigger for me. I would have been happy to explain what my dog does to be my service dog, but the guys behind the bar were very aggressive and rude about their questioning and sent me into a PTSD episode. I froze, couldn't talk and felt I was being attacked. The guys who worked the bar said my service dog was a health code violation and basically kicked us out. We canceled our order and had to leave. Terrible treatment from staff! Plus, most of the people were drunk because they kept serving beer and not cutting people off. I will not return and advise others who have service dogs to not bother with this place. You will be treated poorly, your service dog will not be welcomed and you will be triggered. read more

First time here and I absolutely loved this place. There are so many reasons why, so I'm just going to list them all! 1. They follow covid protocols. I felt very safe the whole time. 2. They have a huge menu of draft beers and also like 4 refrigerators of can/bottle beers. There is something for everyone. 3. Their food menu is super diverse and is constantly changing. It also had vegetarian friendly options (yay!) 4. Their bathrooms were gender neutral. 5. They supported other local businesses by having breads/ice creams for sale in their lobby. 6. The food was delicious and it was ready super fast!! 7. The indoor space is open and bright with beer garden style tables. There is also a TV where you can watch whatever game is on. 8. They have a large outdoor patio area that is shaded and dog friendly. 9. All of their utensils, straws and containers are compostable!! 10. This is mostly a review in response to some of the questionable negative reviews this place has gotten. 1. This is a bar. Not a restaurant. It is a beer garden style bar, that serves food. 2. Again this is a bar. While they are family and dog friendly, it is also required to follow certain laws and guidelines. Such as only certified service animals are allowed inside. If you're upset they asked you to please bring your pet outside (where all well behaved animals are allowed, on leash and under your control), and it's hot? You should have left your pet at home. 3. One more time. THIS. IS. A. BAR. They do not have a kids menu. It is not designed to cater to children, though families are welcome, and they do provide much simpler items, including chicken strips and hamburgers, it ultimately caters to adults. 4. Do I have to say it again? It's a bar. Therefore they are required by state law to ID patrons who order alcohol, whom look under age or close to it. They are required to ONLY accept what California considers a valid ID. Out of date? Not valid. School, work, or Costco ID? Not valid. Photostatic copy of an out of state driver's license? Not valid. If the bartenders or staff were caught not following those rules, they and the business can be fined. 5. And finally (bet you think I'm going to remind you it's a bar,right? Fooled ya!), to all of those who have valid complaints about the food, staff, or anything else, maybe try and address those issues with management, before you create a Yelp account to leave the one and only review to bash on a place when there were better options, that could have made your visit at least a bit better. Rating is strictly for Chris one of the owners. I've been vacationing in the area for years and recently bought a home here. Chris made it clear upon my visit he only welcomed locals after another patron asked where I was from and he overheard. I had some great conversation with the other folks there but Chris made me feel anything but welcome even though the only thing he needed to do for me was serve my beer. It felt like Chris went out of his way to make me feel unwelcome even though I wasn't interacting with him. We popped in over St Patty's weekend and the younger cashier/bartender apparently didn't like an almost 23 year old to order a beer with his parents and girlfriend. Shook his head with anger the entire time we ordered! I asked him if there was a problem and he ignored me. We went back this last weekend to give it another shot and he was just as rude to my nephew, son, and sister! The older gentleman bartender is not friendly either. It's such a shame the staff ruin the beautiful ambiance and beer! And given the other reviews on here regarding the staff, the owner may want to consider customer service training for all employees. My beer was flat. No customer service. They just did not care. Food was definitely overcooked. Well , burned actually. They also didn't care. I get it it's an order at the register type of place but to not even sure offer any help around that front register is ridiculous... I've only been once and honestly it was during Covid so obviously things were weird then but I'm sitting there waiting at the bar waiting to order a drink and the server openly says I'm going to go get ice as I'm waiting to order. and also the worker rudely swiped the buzzer out of my girlfriends hand because he expected her to place it in the basket... just minor things that could be corrected with either better training or new staff. also the fact that it says bus your own tables all around when the staff is already doing minimal work....idk just seems like I could receive better service at different restaurants in town for the same price. very unpleased with our experience read more

We have eaten here a few times since they first opened right before the pandemic started and we have never been disappointed. My buddy Steve, a retired firefighter, who lives up there took me here the first time and periodically when we head up to Murphy's wine tasting and picking up wine at Val Du Vino we stop here for a quick bite at lunch. They have a large indoor and outdoor seating area after you order your beer and grub. We picked it this time as it was very wheel chair accessible for Steve's daughter. Their bathrooms are clean and they are individual rooms with a common area to wash your hands. What's funny in them is that they took some Amheiser-Busch kegs and made them into urinals. Since Budweiser isn't a real beer as it doesn't follow the Reinheitsgrebot German purity laws for beer ingredients (malted barley, hops, water), what better use a Bud keg! Now you know where Budweiser comes from. LoL You order at the bar and they call you when the food is ready. It wasn't too busy on a Monday and the food came out quickly and hot. Service has been good whenever we have been there. The Dust Bowl Lemon Shandy was really good on a warm afternoon. They change their menu items frequently which is good. On our latest meetup, Steve and I both had their Chorizo Burgers with fries and the fried goat curds. The ladies had the soup and cucumber salads. Not the place to go if you want a large selection of weight watcher items on the menu! I went to the Watering Hole for the past 2 days for my lunch as I work local and both days everything was amazing. The first day I ordered the Jamaican Jerk chicken breast sandwich with roasted red peppers and a mango chutney- Delicious. The ingredients were fresh and so tasty all together. I also ordered the Asian Cucumber Salad as a smaller plate and that was also very good. Ingredients again were fresh and there was a heat to the salad, and it was just perfect. Portions were perfect, I paired my food with a lemonade, but they are called the watering hole- there is plenty of beer on tap and in the fridges to choose from. The next day I got the lemon chicken- amazing! I have added a picture of this dish, and I also got the Jack Cheddar mac n cheese bites- YUM. They were served with ranch dressing and came out perfectly cooked and didn't burn my mouth when I ate them. Everything in fact was perfectly cooked on both days. I will go back, and I will recommend to anyone and everyone. Food, yum, portions- great, service- good (you order you food and pick up your own food then put away your own trash and tray), ambiance is pretty cool- I like all the wood they have plus they have a few large TV's and a fireplace sitting area. This seems like a cool place to chill and have some beers with some amazing food. Menu changes daily! I have eaten here and so have friends and the food was meh and the service bad but I wasn't going to review because I always want small businesses in this area to thrive. BUT, this past weekend we were at the Pourhouse (also in Murphys, but with actual good food) and the male owner of the Watering Hole (assuming white guy with a Watering Hole collared shirt and a big attitude) was yelling, using foul language, and didn't even attempt to move when my elderly mother in law, two year old and I tried to move past him and ALLLL the space his loudness was taking by the bar. He had jerk written all over him, and it makes sense the food and service at the Watering Hole suck if he's at another bar wasting space on a Saturday night. Wasn't going to return for food before, but now won't even return for a drink (the only good part haha) because of the epic jerkness.
