Came here to celebrate my dad's 60th birthday. We had reservations and were able to get seated inside because it was pretty toasty out. However, the outside patio looks so cozy! Especially their big round tables. There were four of us and we were sat a small round table inside and it was a little squished for all of us, our drinks, appetizers, etc. We had the calamari to start which was honestly the best. Actual pieces of calamari. Not just rings. The caprese salad was served with a pesto sauce and slices of mozzarella. Very fresh and great for a hot day. Okay, Alchemy... why did I wait this long? I've driven past this place MANY times, and this was finally the day I decided to stop being a window shopper and actually walk in. And yeah... I'll definitely be back. I'm not gonna lie, walking into Alchemy when you're just looking for a quick lunch is a little intimidating. The place is giving elegant, polished, "I should probably know which fork to use" vibes. But once you're actually seated, the whole experience is surprisingly warm and inviting. The service is friendly, the atmosphere is professional without feeling stuffy, and the food definitely understood the assignment. I started with the soup of the day, which came with toasted bread and melted cheese on top. And honestly? No complaints. Warm, comforting, cheesy... exactly what I needed. Then came the Calamari Frites. Good crunch, solid seasoning, and since I personally believe jalapeños belong wherever they can legally be placed, I was VERY happy about those. The chipotle aioli was also giving exactly what it needed to give. For the main event, I went with the Alchemy Burger, medium-well, with fries. Everything tasted fresh, and the burger was definitely something I'd order again. BUT HERE'S THE PROBLEM. We have always been fans of Alchemy in Murphy's, but their new chef Jonathan has taken them up a notch! My sister and I brought our mother, Donna for a birthday lunch. The food was exceptional. I had the steak sandwich which had perfectly cooked steak and a delicious blend of horseradish cream and chimichurri. My mother had the chicken pesto sandwich with perfectly cooked chicken and a delicious basil-forward pesto. My sister enjoyed the seasonal special caprese salad with local heirloom tomatoes the delicious pesto, fried basil and capers and buffalo mozzarella in a balsamic dressing. It was beautifully presented and the essence of summer. Turns out my mother knew Jonathan from a previous restaurant and was super excited to find out he was at Alchemy. Our server Brittany was friendly and offered suggestions that turned out to be amazing. She also made sure Jonathan came out to say hi to my mother (a reunion of sorts!). The fried chicken was just okay, and the short rib was a little fatty. Our friend's kid's pasta wasn't edible, and the kids' meal also came out much later than everyone else's. This is a disappointing review to write..... as I live in Murphys. However, friends and the wife and I dropped into Alchemy a few weeks ago to enjoy a cocktail and probably a meal thereafter..... however there was not a bar tender, and only one server, who was trying her best to represent the business. We watched a gentleman guide her on how to make a cocktail, as we then decided we could not put her through the experience of how to make four more cocktails. Kudos to her for trying, however we wished for a modicum of customer service. We returned last night, and unfortunately were greeted with a comparable experience. No bartender, and we were told, "You can't sit at the bar." This time, there were at least two servers. Both tried to be as accommodating as possible, so we are able to enjoy a few cocktails, but no way were we going to then order food. We want Murphys businesses to succeed, but this is no way to do it. By the way, this occurred on a Friday night at 5:30pm. We have now scratched Alchemy off our dinner venues. read more

They set us up in the side patio and it was a VIBE!!!! it was a warm summer night with the misters on cooling us down, cafe lights, everything was gorgeous with the landscape all around us! We started with appetizers: their specialty bread was a hit! As was the calamari, buffalo cauliflower, and hot and delicious garlic fries! Our waitress was incredible. So accommodating with the kids cups, offering delicious chipotle and herb aioli - wow so good!!! Our adult drinks were great! Our entrees were top notch. I live in Murphys and definitely sure it's the best meal I've had here. Our party got the fried chicken- soooo moist with delicious gravy and the mashed potatoes OMGGGGGGG. What magic is in there!?! Scallops were incredible with delicious risotto and veg, braised short ribs yummmm, and the burger was incredible. Everything was incredible! The kids were taken such good care as well, the meals were a great portion and they each got a kid sundae after!!! The smiles on the kids when that showed up was awesome! I am not one to write many reviews but this place really charmed me. I don't go out much as we have young kids but when we do, it's a special occasion and this night was incredible service, incredible food, incredible atmosphere. We are camping for a few nights at Angel's camp. Our routine is to set up camp and then go to a restaurant for dinner. We have our sweet dog with us and after an exhausting search for a restaurant that allows dogs in angels camp we took a chance and drive to Murphy's. We happened upon alchemy restaurant and they graciously sat us in their cool and airy patio and quickly brought our thirsty boy a bowl of water with ice too. It was a super hot night. We ordered the best ever fish and chips and Angus burger, glass of wine and a delicious beer that I can't remember the name of. Britney served us and a young man made sure we had plenty of water for us in our dog. It was a lovely patio and they had misters on to cool their guests. Let me start by saying the food was great. No complaints there. I'm dinging a star just for the service. Though the pricing on the food is pretty high for a place like Murphy's, this is supposed to be one of the more finer restaurants. However, the service was pretty inattentive. After asking us for our drink order. One of our group didn't receive his Stout beer. I'm not a big complainer about stuff like this but the rest in our group had already finished their drinks and ready for round 2 while our friend didn't even get theirs. We had already gotten appetizers but not our mains, and the waitress didn't come to get additional drink orders even though everyone was empty and the friend didn't even get his. I went to the bar by myself and I was told his Stout was pressurizing and needed 15 minutes to get going, or something I couldn't understand. I asked them for another round and getting him something else was ready. Not informing us that his drink was going to take 15+ min to get ready, and not coming in for getting us a 2nd round, just seemed a bit inattentive. Waitresses which there were several seemed bored and not all too concerned with us which was kind of funny as the restaurant was pretty much empty. For that I ding a star, but the food was good! I wish I had better things to say about the place because the food we got was pretty nice. We arrived for an early dinner on a Friday and were seated after a few minutes. Then, came a long wait for a server to come. Once they did, after tables who had been seated after us, they offered us water that also took a long time. One of our servers was so kind, I didn't catch her name, but she brought our water and took our orders very efficiently, but was friendly. We ordered the fried cauliflower and alchemy burgers. Once the cauliflower came, our waiter told us that a cook had walked out mid-dinner rush had left them low on production. This didn't really explain the wait for service but we understood. I didn't get photos of the burgers when they came, because our table was pretty hungry after the long wait! The presentation of the food was ok but the food itself was pretty delicious. The fries were very flavorful and the burgers were cooked a perfect medium rare. We also got a butter pecan sundae that was very large, but good. If the food and that one waiter had not been so good, I would probably take more stars. If you are going to come here, I recommend having a lot of time and patience. 5 stars for the food, 2 stars for the service. Knowing this, I would be tentative to come back if we got the same experience in terms of service. read more

We were visiting this past weekend from San Diego, CA and we were looking for a place to watch the Norway v. England World Cup game that could accommodate 11 adults and 10 kids on a whim. Even though this place usually closes in the afternoon, they stayed open for our group and to eat/drink and watch the game. Our server, Brittany was amazing!! Up in the area for the long weekend to check out Calaveras Big Trees State Park and made a reso for this place - and had high hopes - ends up this place is decidedly mid. Service was incredibly slow, despite there being no shortage of waiters and waitresses and many open tables the whole evening. They gave us upwards of 10 minutes with the single page menu to decide on appetizers, then another 5 minutes to inquire about the entrees. The bill took 20 minutes to recevie at the end. While nitpicky, you truly expect better from a restaurant like this. For our appetizers, we ordered Mac and cheese and Gold nugget bread. The "world-famous" bread is just garlic bread. It was delivered lukewarm, it tasted fine, and it's still not worth the $8. The Mac and cheese was just alright. Unlike the garlic bread, it was delivered hot, and tasted slightly unique. It was the best part of the meal. The fun cocktails were also pretty good. The bartender making the drinks has more in it for them than the person who cooked our food. For our entrees, we ordered the Fried chicken, the Cheeseburger, the mushroom polenta, and the seared scallops with risotto. Initially, the second child (who got a cheeseburger) ALSO wanted fried chicken, but they were somehow out of chicken at 7pm on a saturday. Both the chicken and the burger were substandard, especially for the price; the burger, much like the golden bread, was lukewarm and basic. Additionally, the "garlic" fries on the side were indistinguishable from normal french fries. I genuinely hope that they messed up the order because of how disappointing the fries were. Absolutely not worth the $20 you pay. The $28-for-a-single-piece Fried Chicken was arguably worse than Popeyes or Chick-fil-a. The mashed potatoes and Bok choy on the side were alright, but nothing to write home about. Again, not worth the $28 fee. The mushroom polenta was genuinely good. Medium sized portion with no real protein source, but that's expected from a vegetarian dish. Was it worth the $25? Meh. The seared scallops were also good. Nothing to complain about there except for the $39 price tag. Really?? Overall, we entered hopeful, and left disappointed. The kids weren't satisfied. Poor POOR service. Would not return. read more

Alchemy is a great place for lunch in Arnold, if you're looking for something more than burgers, pizza or basic sandwiches. On a warm July Saturday, it was still rather busy around 2:30. They do close between lunch and dinner (I think around 3) and we were one of the last lunch seatings. Staff was still welcoming and friendly. Their outdoor patio was lovely but it was a warm day and cooler indoor seating was the way to go. I got the tofu Bahn Mi, which was flavorful and enough for splitting in two for leftovers. It has been a minute since we dined at Alchemy and I am so glad we revisited them! We were looking for a restaurant on a Saturday night that would take reservations for a large group. I called several restaurants in Murphys and they were unable to accommodate our group. I luckily was able to make reservations at Alchemy. We were able to be seated earlier than scheduled which worked out well for our group after a long day of wine tasting. We all started with drinks from the bar and I must say they were amazing. I ordered a drink with pear vodka and it was very well made. For dinner we naturally started with the gold nugget bread. If you've never tasted it, you need to do so ASAP. Trust me. I ordered the pan seared pangasius which is a flaky white fish with a very mild flavor. No fishy taste at all. Everyone enjoyed their meals and the friendly atmosphere. The scallops (one of the most expensive dishes , is gritty (lots of sand ) and had a burnt taste to them dispute being tender. The risotto that comes with three fish was a thin layer and for $40 . There's a reason the locals call it "crack bread." Pro tip: they do also sell the toppings and housemade butter to take home and make it yourself! *Dulce de Leche Cheesecake was fabulous! While visiting my aunt in Angels Camp, she suggested we dine at Alchemy. Since I am from New Jersey I followed her lead, which was a great decision. We started with the Golden Nugget Bread and the Burrata with pasta chips. Both appetizers were fantastic, but the bread was very unique and I could have eaten all of it myself. For my entree I went with the Fried Chicken. My only criticism is that the fried chicken has a sweet Asian glaze but is served over Yukon mashed potatoes. Both the chicken and mashed potatoes were great, but the flavors of the chicken would probably pair better with rice rather than mashed. Overall it was a great experience. read more

Both were great and I also enjoyed the local wine selections. Best of all was the covered patio area. I was traveling alone with my two large dogs, and the staff was very accommodating, even bringing a water bowl out for them. The patio was large enough that the dogs were not near other diners.
