We have eaten here a few times since they first opened right before the pandemic started and we have never been disappointed. My buddy Steve, a retired firefighter, who lives up there took me here the first time and periodically when we head up to Murphy's wine tasting and picking up wine at Val Du Vino we stop here for a quick bite at lunch. They have a large indoor and outdoor seating area after you order your beer and grub. We picked it this time as it was very wheel chair accessible for Steve's daughter. Their bathrooms are clean and they are individual rooms with a common area to wash your hands. What's funny in them is that they took some Amheiser-Busch kegs and made them into urinals. Since Budweiser isn't a real beer as it doesn't follow the Reinheitsgrebot German purity laws for beer ingredients (malted barley, hops, water), what better use a Bud keg! Now you know where Budweiser comes from. LoL You order at the bar and they call you when the food is ready. It wasn't too busy on a Monday and the food came out quickly and hot. Service has been good whenever we have been there. The Dust Bowl Lemon Shandy was really good on a warm afternoon. They change their menu items frequently which is good. On our latest meetup, Steve and I both had their Chorizo Burgers with fries and the fried goat curds. The ladies had the soup and cucumber salads. Not the place to go if you want a large selection of weight watcher items on the menu! I get it it's an order at the register type of place but to not even sure offer any help around that front register is ridiculous... I've only been once and honestly it was during Covid so obviously things were weird then but I'm sitting there waiting at the bar waiting to order a drink and the server openly says I'm going to go get ice as I'm waiting to order. and also the worker rudely swiped the buzzer out of my girlfriends hand because he expected her to place it in the basket... just minor things that could be corrected with either better training or new staff. also the fact that it says bus your own tables all around when the staff is already doing minimal work....idk just seems like I could receive better service at different restaurants in town for the same price. very unpleased with our experience read more

I went to the Watering Hole for the past 2 days for my lunch as I work local and both days everything was amazing. The first day I ordered the Jamaican Jerk chicken breast sandwich with roasted red peppers and a mango chutney- Delicious. The ingredients were fresh and so tasty all together. I also ordered the Asian Cucumber Salad as a smaller plate and that was also very good. Ingredients again were fresh and there was a heat to the salad, and it was just perfect. Portions were perfect, I paired my food with a lemonade, but they are called the watering hole- there is plenty of beer on tap and in the fridges to choose from. The next day I got the lemon chicken- amazing! I have added a picture of this dish, and I also got the Jack Cheddar mac n cheese bites- YUM. They were served with ranch dressing and came out perfectly cooked and didn't burn my mouth when I ate them. Everything in fact was perfectly cooked on both days. I will go back, and I will recommend to anyone and everyone. Food, yum, portions- great, service- good (you order you food and pick up your own food then put away your own trash and tray), ambiance is pretty cool- I like all the wood they have plus they have a few large TV's and a fireplace sitting area. I have eaten here and so have friends and the food was meh and the service bad but I wasn't going to review because I always want small businesses in this area to thrive. BUT, this past weekend we were at the Pourhouse (also in Murphys, but with actual good food) and the male owner of the Watering Hole (assuming white guy with a Watering Hole collared shirt and a big attitude) was yelling, using foul language, and didn't even attempt to move when my elderly mother in law, two year old and I tried to move past him and ALLLL the space his loudness was taking by the bar. He had jerk written all over him, and it makes sense the food and service at the Watering Hole suck if he's at another bar wasting space on a Saturday night. Wasn't going to return for food before, but now won't even return for a drink (the only good part haha) because of the epic jerkness. Our first time here at the recommendation of our family in the area. Cute little spot for beer and food, with a nice patio area. They only had 1 tv (the big main one) on for football, but we didn't request it on the others, so not sure if they couldv'e changed it. As others mentioned, it is more of a beer garden - but not a brewery. Kid Friendly too, which is a plus for us. We all enjoyed the food we ordered the day we came, but be warned - THE MENU CHANGES. My husband came back a few weeks later with friends and was bummed the tator tots were no longer on the menu, he was craving. Not much interactive with staff, but the lady taking our order was very friendly. She said she recognized our son, even though it was all our first time there, but heey it was a convo starter. Murphy's is known as a foodie destination, and the Watering Hole reflects this well. We have been in a couple of times and were especially impressed with them during covid. The food menu rotates regularly as does the draft list and they have a great selection of cans and bottles that you can either drink on site or take home. We were so impressed with the food--the quality is much higher than what you'd typically find at a tap house or pub. We appreciated the variety and that there were options that felt lighter and not fried. Overall, highly recommend if you're in the area! They also have wine and cider for those who are not beer fans, and they have plenty of seating both indoors and outdoors. read more

Alright! Review time. So, this is my first time in Arnold, Murphy, Avery as an independent adult and during the summer. The activities I did, didn't disappoint, but more on that on Trip Advisor. Came here the night we drove up and visited a friend's family who recommended it. It was pretty nice! I didn't expect the towns up here to have super nice fancy spots, I thought it was more like a dive bar area. They have a great and excellent menu of beer. I enjoyed them thoroughly. I had a few from out of the the area and they were great. Onto the food, and I've been on a damn diet, but damnit, I had to try it!! 1) Waffle Prosciutto sandwich. 2) Deep FRIED mac & cheese 3) Strip steak tacos 4) Potato fries with homemade guacamole 1) Deep fried macaroni bites were slammin'. I've actually never tried these before and they didn't disappoint. It was like eating a spoon full of mac and cheese with every bite, crunch on the outside and the smooth mac and cheese on the inside 2) strip steak tacos were great!!! the strip steak wasn't too chewy and it fell apart with every bite. Only thing I would suggest, add some fresh pico de gallo to it for a bit more of a filler and maybe a pickled radish and it would have been perfection in the form of a taco. 3) Potato Fries with the guacamole was interesting, I've never seen fries cut this way but it it worked. And I'm usually not a fan of the creamy/smooth guacamole but that usually means it's from a can or container and usually contains way too much sodium. But, THIS, one was pretty good, it tasted fresh just prepped a different way because I'm guessing you can't scoop chunky guacamole with the potato, so it worked out perfect. Excellent choice as a side if you order a burger 4) Waffle sandwich - interesting, as great as the waffle is and was, I feel like for this dish, it needed something else or more prosciutto. The sweetness of the waffle and the cream cheese (I think) overwhelmed the sandwich, I think a bit more of the deli meat would have made for a better balance, but nonetheless it was interesting to eat. So def a deserving 5/5 stars. I met the owner there too and he's a great guy, they have a changing menu so I'd def come here again if I'm ever in town. If you sit outside there's a cool creek behind the patio for some cool scenery and it seems to be pet friendly. I hope they expand the deck over the river, which would be even cooler! This was the first time we have set foot in this awesome place. The inside is well laid out with the menu board of all the beer and wine list over the massive fridge full of varieties of beer to choose from. Next to it is a shelf full of fresh baked break from a local baker called Todd's. It is self served using Venmo. Once you decide scoot over to the counter to order food and your drink. The toilet was right by the door and it's gender neutral!!! We ordered the spicy chicken sandwich and the giant pretzel. Chicken was ok, what could have elevated this sandwich was the cheese. The sandwich would have tasted good without it. It added a layer of saltiness that wasn't necessary. I would order it again but asked for no cheese. The pretzel was fluffy soft and the sauce was tasty with value satisfying size. The other feedback would be to add a bigger selection of wines given there are 23 wineries in Murphys. Maybe take advantage of your nice picnic area by the creek in the back and offer customers an opportunity to buy a bottle or two of wines, grab a loaf of Todd's sourdough bread with some lunch meat and gourmet cheese (start stocking these as it pairs well with IPAs). Customers love picnics...seen it in Napa...always packed at V Sattui Winery. Todd's loaf of wheat Sourdough was delicious. I will try the other versions next time. $8 bucks well worth it. Lastly, the service was good. I highly recommend this place for some refreshments and quick bite to eat. I will definitely come back again as I had a nice experience. Cheese or no cheese, it doesn't deter me from enjoying a place like this. read more

Three and a half stars? You're kidding me. Remember when Carl's Junior offered a "6 dollar burger" for three dollars. Today, the "6 dollar burgers" costs 10 dollars. That's how much the burger at the Watering Hole costs. Ten dollars. But in comparison to the Carl's Junior burger, it would be aptly named "the 20 dollar burger". It's that good! Great patty, great fixins', great cheese, great bun, great taste! Coming to Murphys to eat this burger is worth the trip. The Watering Hole also has an excellent side menu. I enjoyed a cup of onion and leek soup. The dining area is spacious. You pay at the counter and then take your food. The service is fast. There is also a nice outdoor dining area overlooking Murphys Creek; a very nice to sit and enjoy your great burger. read more

Recently I had rated The Watering Hole in Murphys CA as high as could be, based on food and service. Now I'm redacting that one. we have a different opinion relative to our visit last week. 1. NO non-alcoholic beer, which was available on our first visit previously. Not just unavailable but the excuse given was that it was hard to get, so Jason (owner) quit ordering it. This is a strange response given that other restaurants in Calaveras County including Murphys restaurants have non-alcoholic beer available all the time, as well as local markets. 2. Person taking our order was not particularly friendly or welcoming; he was more like "you wanna eat here fine or you don't - fine whatever" kind of attitude. We stayed but didn't feel comfortable. 3.Food this time was OK, not awesome. Burger had way too much sauce - hard to hang onto to eat. Same rude clerk told us where to find catsup (sorry - we had forgotten) but not friendly. Again, we were hungry so we stayed, but - hey- customers deserve a more welcoming attitude. read more

Here we go: 1) a child we were with got car sick & threw up "liquid" upon arriving in the restaurant- she tried to clean it but the restroom had no paper towels. The lady taking our order was very kind- but the owner muttered under his breath "we aren't cleaning that up." Eventually someone came & cleaned it. 2) Saw him speaking badly about us to his staff. 3) Told us "you know you have to go outside with the dog." 4) Told my friend she was "letting the air conditioning out because her child was playing with the doors" then proceeds to tell her "you aren't watching your kid." Main point... If your not going to be kid friendly- say kids aren't welcome!!! Straight up. If you own a business- be polite & treat your customers with respect!!! Unfortunately my friend owns a home in Arnold & used to frequent the watering hole. But we will never be returning here & encourage others with children to not give this place your business. There was no sign that the tables could not be moved and after the group got yelled at they did not hesitate to move the table back but you could tell it put a bad taste in everyone's mouth. It costs nothing to be respectful to your patrons even if they may be upsetting you, especially when we would have had no problem moving the table back at the end. This is the place that I keep trying to go to to see if it gets any better and it just doesn't. The food is OK every once in a while. The amount of food is usually not very good. There's been a few food items that I have received where the presentation was almost laughable. It kind of feels like cafeteria middle school food. This place has so much potential but serving with plastic forks on paper plates with OK food for a high price... Not worth it. They have a good beer but it's not like they brew it. Not to mention the attitude from all the employees. It seems like you're bugging them when you go to order. There was one girl that was very sweet I believe her name was Megan but so far everyone else just has a bad attitudes. Enjoy the building maybe grab a beer but I don't really recommend it. We used to really enjoy going here but the last two times, the bartender has been unwelcoming and rude, he makes you feel like you are an inconvenience and bothering him. He shows little enthusiasm for his job. Then the beer is Served luke warm. As for the food it is good one visit then not so good the next. The cheeseburger is good, but Cole slaw is tasteless, potato salad is seasoned well , cheese curds are greasy, soup is hit or miss. Someone should be tasting the food before serving. I've been to the Watering Hole about 10 times since Jason opened. Each time, it has gotten worse and worse. This last visit will be our last. Management has ruined this place. I get that Chris wants this to be his friends hangout - but when they're there, you still have to do your job and not blatantly ignore paying patrons. The patio was disgustingly dirty with sticky, spilled beer all over it (the shade coverings were removed so your beer got warm super fast), he didn't want to clean anything, made horrible off-hand comments when people didn't bus their tables and was completely unprofessional and rude when a tourist asked him a general question. The Motherlode thrives on tourism dollars. If you don't want to be hospitable, get out of the hospitality business. read more

Incredible beer selection, love that they have more than just IPAs. Hubby had an excellent stout and I had a saison which is often hard to find. We both had truly the best impossible burger that we've ever had. Highly recommend this place. The atmosphere was also really really nice. Felt like we were somewhere in Colorado with the decor inside and out. Excellent seating options and nice babblingcreek outside. Update: Oh my goodness... We continue to be impressed with the spot. Just tried the Thai chicken salad fried prime tacos and spicy cauliflower bites, and everything was absolutely incredible. We have been here a few times since it's opening. Each time we have enjoyed the bites and brews. Now, during the corona virus era, they have begun take-out only. A big plus is local Todd's Breads are also available to purchase. They are now offering a family dinner on weekends. First weekend featured a Cioppino dinner for 4. This includes the main course plus Caesar Salad and a loaf of Todd's Sourdough. It was amazing and a full serving for four. Two of us gorged and still have plenty leftover. There is also a huge beer menu (both bottled and on tap). This is a grab your own food when the buzzer goes off, bus your own tray kind of place. I had the omelet and some very spicy fried green beans. Others in our party got burgers, salads, chicken tenders, and more. All were good. We ate outside near the fire pit on the deck on a very cold night surrounded by locals (the entire CalFire crew) and tourists. Was there recently and had there boneless shortrib over mashed potatoes with a wine reduction, it was in the top 5 of best meal I have ever eaten, seriously if it is on the menu you have to get it. Overall I like this place and its a nice end of the day stop after visiting Murphys wine testing shopping etc. Have not eaten a meal but had appetizers twice and they were just OK. My only gripe and its a personal preference is that I love West Coast style IPAs and they usually only have 1-2 to choose from but a ton of other beer styles I dont like nearly as much. read more

I LOVE THE WATERING HOLE. Murphys has so much to offer, so much wine.. the watering hole provides the beer and PHENOMENAL food. The menu is ever changing so you never get bored of the same menu over and over. The flavors... crazy! Jason has created art with the range of foods and let me say, from my experience - I have never been let down. Two words: Beer. Choices. With over 40 on tap and a perfect range of all types of beer, no one will be left out. On a side note... you need to experience the fridge for yourself. I love Belgian beers, and in Murphys there was a huge lack of them anywhere beer was served - to that I say NO MORE!
