At the top of the month, I went to see Bobby Lee: The Finally Tour at the Wellmont Theater. This was the second comedy show that I've attended here. I mostly go to the Wellmont for concerts, but it's a good venue for stand-up also. My husband and I were seated in upper balcony. The audio is usually always good there, so no matter where you sit you catch everything. Photography and videotaping were prohibited for this specific show. There were signs posted on every door to the theater, so it was clear. Ban on these aren't always the case, but - if you are familiar with Bobby Lee, then you probably can imagine why. If you were at this Bobby Lee show - then you for sure know why! Haha As always and as I wrote in my past review of the Wellmont Theater: Everybody working the house - from security to ushers to concessions - are always friendly and great to people. That makes a difference for everyone. That's one aspect of Wellmont that makes seeing an act there special. It's a Live Nation venue, but it still feels like a local spot (in my opinion). read more

Wellmont Theater is a great concert venue if you live on this side of the river and don't feel like crossing a bridge into the city. It's a manageable size, there are parking garage options nearby, and plenty of food within walking distance. The venue is small enough that there really isn't a bad seat in the house -- unless you end up next to a bad patron. Sightlines are solid throughout. Sound quality was good, and security did a great job managing the walkways and handling crowd surfers when they were dropped up front. A couple downsides: there are not enough bathrooms. During breaks, the lines stretched out the door, down the hallway, and across the width of the theater. The seats are also extremely tight. Tickets are reasonably priced, so next time I may just buy two per person for a little extra space. They do have adequate bars, though drinks are pricey. Bottled water is $4, and they won't provide a cup of water (I had to buy one so my daughter could take medicine). Overall, still a really solid venue and one I'd return to -- just plan ahead for bathroom lines and tight seating. read more

Came for the sold out Vampire Weekend concert and had a great experience! The theater is small so there really isn't a bad seat in the house. Acoustics were great too. It's a very cool space to see a larger act, so it's no surprise that Vampire Weekend sold out four nights in a row. Bathrooms and bars are plentiful which is really all that I can ask for in a music venue. The surrounding area is wonderful and there's of course no shortage of amazing spots to grab dinner before a show. We're lucky to have a venue like the Wellmont in North Jersey and I'll continue to check the calendar to see what gets announced. read more

They weren't Spin Doctors fans. Shouting through Shinbone Alley and Little Miss Can't Be Wrong about beach houses or something, they mist have been there for the headliner, the Gin Blossoms. Two Princes earned maybe 20 seconds of silence, perhaps a nostalgic reminder of the hot frat boy they shared at SUNY Binghamton in '92. "Concert" is an odd thing. It's like a YouTube video but with drinking. Sometimes the bands get so loud you can't even hear yourself talk. Turns out they weren't interested in the headliner either. "Thanks for getting the tickets," she said. Yet the motive for attendance was unclear. Surely there are bars closer to home. "She had nothing left to say, so she said she loved me, I stood there grateful for the lie," amazingly marked their final Wellmont exit. What kind of "music fan" wouldn't even hang around for Hey Jealousy? Is it wrong to downgrade the Wellmont for its terrible crowds? Like when someone at another Gin Blossoms spent much of the show looking up Maroon 5 tickets at Prudential? Or does this belong under my 2-star review for The Human Race? The single bathroom and massive line had me yearning for an evening of Liquid Deaths and low-stress bathrooms at a friendly neighborhood Live Nation shed. I was a little unhappy with our experience at Talking Sopranos although I am usually thrilled with The Welmont. I guess here's the thing. We usually sit up top but today we had the lower level. They had some seats set up. They were tied together. And my seat was behind a pole so I couldn't see the stage. I went to speak to the box office and at first the lady was rude and said that's how the temporary seats were set up. I explained that I paid the same as everyone else and I didn't expect to get a partial view. She moved our seats. I'm glad she moved us but it shouldn't happen any seats have a blocked view and then to tell me too bad until I insisted is just not right. We did enjoy the show once we were moved tho. read more

Came here for Sheng Wang comedy show. It's a local small theater mostly for the neighborhood. They lined up chairs and put number stickers by hands (quite impressive actually). The theater definitely needs a facelift. Bathrooms and floor are not in the best condition. The bar has alcohol beverages, soft drinks and finger foods. Not the best but the price is not crazy either (compared to other big theaters). $20 for a wine, a Diet Coke and a hotdog (kinda small). Street parking or garage parking. First time here, came in from lower Manhattan, took awhile on the train and he bus but worth it, nice area, restaurants near by. Well lit, felt safe near the theater. Awesome venue. Friendly staff inside. Great seats from the top or the bottom. Seats and standing room available. Plenty of space. Full bar and snack available. Great sound for the band performing. Bathroom was way too small and the line was always long, only thing that was disappointing but would highly recommend and definitely return. read more

We went to see Talking Sopranos. It was very good. We had one hiccup but they fixed it. Our seats were on the Bar Level and my gf was right behind a pole. They don't tell you any seats will be a partial view like Ticketmaster does. But she went to the box office and at first they said well sorry that's how the seats are set up. But after she explained we paid the same for that as any other seat was, they moved us to a different area. So all in all it was taken care of and as usual we enjoyed our event there. read more

Great intimate Broadway-style theater located conveniently in downtown Montclair. The location is so convenient for pre- and post-show dining/libations. I especially appreciated the respectful staff quickly ushering everyone in, from security checking bags to the people scanning your tickets. We had mezzanine seats and these afforded decent sightlines to the stage so that we could see each actor in Conversation with the Sopranos. It was such a cool experience to see this particular show here, in the heart of it all. The Jersey pride was strong! Although I can't report to the drinks/snacks situation, I can tell you that the popcorn scent was compelling, LOL! Seats are made for people from the past, which suits 5'2" Yours Truly, but my husband and brother were less thrilled. Note on sound: In general it was OK but the sound guy really needed to turn the high pitched comedian down as it was a little excruciating during his set. Without going into too much detail let me just say "NEVER AGAIN". I'm not large but I have never sat in such uncomfortable seating, so close to the next person and literally in nose bleed heaven. If you're in the last 3 sets of balcony seating you'd be better off playing the band you went to see album at home instead. In addition the place is in serious need of repair and update. As to the employees, they leave A LOT to be desired! Its a dysfunctional, RUDE and unappealing group of people who've got the attitude they're doing you a favor by being there! Cool theater located in the heart of downtown Montclair. Once you walk in you are greated with bars so grab your drinks before you head to your seats. The one thing that stood out was the seating. So this isn't your typical theater. It's more of a hall I would say because there are no seats on the main floor. They placed chairs all on the floor for this comedy event. Each section had markings to illustrate your row, and each seat had a piece of tape on it with your seat #... hey, whatever works. Other than the "theater vs. hall" issue, the staff for the venue were nice and helpful. FYI: There is a parking garage and a few steps away some mini lots where you can pay $20. PRO TIP: If you can bare walking a few blocks, you can park in the neighborhood street and avoid the crowded parking situation... it's a faster exit from town once the even is over. read more

I came here last night to see Alkaline Trio and had a good experience. There's a garage right next door for $30 but we found street parking. Getting through security and into the venue was quick. I had general admission tickets. There's a bar once you enter the venue and a merch table. The bathrooms were located on the second floor. My friend and I hung out by the bar in the GA section. We were able to get a spot by the railing which had a great view of the stage. The acoustics sounded off for the opening bands but they were fine once the headliner went on. Visited the Wellmont theater this week to attend the Jim Norton comedy show. The theater is very organized with plenty of staff to assist, a guest with special needs was accommodated quickly without a fuss. There are bars throughout the theater, bottle of water was $4, beers were in the $10-$12 range. Seats are comfortable, picture seats you would sit in at a wedding hall. The theater is cozy while there is enough room to breathe. Parking is available on the street in addition to at least 3 parking garages in the area. I would have no hesitation to return. read more

I love going to this theater because it is very close to me, there is always parking close by, and because it is a nice size. Pretty much any seat is a good seat, for the most part. They have several bars. I can't speak of the food situation because I have only ordered drinks. I have been there many times and the crowd is never rowdy. I have also dealt with a box office staff, and they have always been very nice and helpful. Security is very tight when you walk in. They use a wand to check you for weapons and they have you open your purse. So they do take security very seriously. You are not able to bring in any drinks, including water as they made me throw out a brand new water bottle. I found this to be a bit of a drag as it was simply water. I ended up having to buy a bottle inside, and when you do this, they take the cap off and give it to you without a cap. Be ready for this. I guess they have had issues with people throwing caps in the past. Other than that, I do enjoy going to see shows there and recommend it. read more

My wife and I went here last night and saw the Beatles Tribute show and absolutely loved it. As others have mentioned, the security guys are pretty miserable. We got there right when the doors opened, so I can't even imagine their attitude after awhile but that didn't affect our experience. Once inside, everyone was extremely helpful and nice. We go to Broadway quite a bit and I thought the inside of The Wellmont was excellent. We were mid level upstairs and had a great view. Sound quality was perfect. Great theater right in the middle of Montclair with many cool restaurants around. Great way to make a date night out of it. We went to see the Beatles 1964 the Tribute and they were excellent! We thought we'd be the youngest people in the crowd but there were actually all age groups. I couldn't believe how spit on this band was. Down to the similar speakers and the same way McCartney held his guitar. Vocals and costumes were also excellent. It was honestly a great show. I was expecting something so so but it was excellent all around! The theater staff are kind and very helpful. From the security staff to the bar tenders everyone was pretty friendly and just doing their jobs. I would totally go back and make a date night out of it with dinner followed by a show at the Wellmont Theater. read more

I came for Andrew Santino's Tito Cheeto stand up comedy show. Checking in and scanning tickets was a breeze. If you are carrying a purse or bag, they do a quick check of it before you can get in. You can smell the strong scent of popcorn even from outside of the theater. They have a bar near the main entrance of the theater and another one on the balcony level. We arrived about fifteen minutes before the show started and both had pretty long lines so we didn't get drinks or refreshments. The show started pretty promptly. There were two opener acts whose sets were only 5-10 minutes each. Andrew came on immediately afterwards. His set was pretty funny and definitely spoke to "the exhausted middle": Americans who fall in the middle of the social/political spectrum and are fed up with the ridiculousness of the extremes on the left and the right. The theater itself has impressive architecture with a lofted, sculpted ceiling. I didn't fully appreciate it when I came here last time for a dance party. Seats were comfortable. We sat in the balcony. The show wasn't sold out so there was a seat or two in between us and the next party. At the beginning of the show, two women in front us were talking a lot, but a guy seated next to them told them off and they were fine for the remainder of the act. read more

I think I forgot what a great town Montclair is! It's packed with restaurants and shops and, of course, The Wellmont Theater. We came here after winning a free pair of Gin Blossom tickets and used it as an excuse for a night in a town I never really make it too. Some things to know before your show: -The theater seats were super comfortable; we were up in the balcony section. --Drinks were not too expensive and they have a few different places to get them both up and downstairs. They also have a few snacks for purchase. -You can circle for awhile looking for metered street parking but you might have to put your car in the lot right next door to the theater for like $30 or $40. -They have mask mandates as well as vaccine verification at the door. All in all a great little venue! I'll be sure to keep an eye on their schedule for future shows so I can plan another Montclair night. read more

Hit up the Wellmont for the first time this past Saturday. The place is OK. Cool architecture for sure, but for popular events, the place can get way overpacked, as was the case for the sold-out show attended. Nowhere to move in the GA area with 5' ledges on either side, so there is no escaping once you are in place. Trash just dropped on the floor by the masses make the floor quite nasty. Parking can be challenging, but there is one garage next door with some residential streets not far away if you don't want to pay. The sounds was adequate enough. It took them a few songs to get the band sounding as they should. The bar attached to the WT (Pharmacie) is where the after party is and it gets super busy. I don't think there is many other late night options afterwards. Don't miss an opportunity to use the restroom if you find the lines short. Merch table was in the narrow hall of the theater and impossible to grab anything without getting in super early for the headliner. Not racing back here. read more

What a great little theater, never would have expected this in Montclair! I won a pair of tickets for Yellow Brick Road (Tribute to Elton John) courtesy of Yelp, and had a fun night out. Will definitely keep my eye out for other shows this year! Few notes: - There's a quick bag check and metal detector before entering. No large bags or liquids (including bottled water) allowed. - Double check the official showtimes on the website. It seems like a bunch of people (myself included) came an hour earlier due to a communication confusion. Thankfully the bar was open, so you could head there for a pre-show drink! - Because we had some time to walk around, I noticed somes seats are definitely not desirable, especially the ones that are right in front of the railings/separators. We sat in center balcony and had a clear view of the band. Our show wasn't sold out so we had several open seats around us, which felt nice and spacious. read more

Reason for 3 stars - the seats are not comfortable after around 30 minutes - gotta get up and get a beer (maybe that's their intent!) and reasonably priced parking's a challenge. My husband and I came here for the YELP Elite Event: Daughtry. There's a lot of history at this theater (so I've been told), so it was a privilege to be able to come here for a concert. Daughtry hasn't really been on my radar lately but they came back with some cooler, more rock-like music, which is back to their rock roots. The alcohol is expensive AF but we both had a good time (although my husband will never admit it). If YELP Elite ever host another event here, I would definitely make an effort to attend. read more

I haven't been to the Wellmont in ages, but I did go for a YelpElite event. They had redone the exterior. The interior has general admission on the first floor with three separate levels and bars on both the first floor third level and on the second floor. This venue is pretty nice for a local venue and the sound is good. I overall had a good experience until I went to leave at the security guard yelled at me for not having a ticket. She apologized when I explained that I was leaving. I think there biggest issue is that the entrance and the exit are the same and that could be better organized. read more

Attended the Beatles tribute band on a Friday night and enjoyed the show and the theater. There is a parking garage that you can park in and it's a short walk to the show. The theater is pretty strict with the size of pocketbooks so ensure you don't bring a giant bag - my friend was stopped for a while because of her bag! Drove 2 hours to this venue and it was worth it! -Parking was extremely easy for the area. If you want to be thrifty arrive a couple hours early for street parking and visit some of the local stores and restaurants. Or park in the parking garage next to the venue for connivence. Tip: During events parking is $30 bucks in the garage. -Staff was professional from the security, ushers and bartenders. No complaints. -The Ambiance was nice, high ceilings, tons of lights, very clean before and after the concert other then obvious spills here and there. Felt very open even being in the sea of fans! -A/C works for sure. I read a couple reviews about the A/C not working but I felt constant air flow throughout the performance lol -Drinks/ Snacks and Band Merchandise is available the entire time from start to finish! I've been here a couple of times, and it's generally a nice space for music. I don't think I've seen any plays listed. They have a weird rule of bags no larger than clutches, and I saw one show where this rule was enforced and one where it wasn't, so I would just recommend caution against bringing a purse in case they decide to enforce. They don't allow outside water. The acoustics are good, and the ceiling/wall design are artistic and show it's an older building (in a good way). Getting a ticket at will call and scanning in is a quick process, even for a crowded show. There's street parking nearby and a lot of food restaurants, so I recommend coming into town early and grabbing dinner to avoid too much parking search. They have a lot of good events here, so it's worth eyeing the calendar from time to time. Most tickets are a reasonable price. read more

We decided to visit Wellmont for a Third Eye Blind show since the band was not playing in the city. Easy enough to get to. Two NJ Transit trains leave you within a 15 minute walk of the theater. There are also signs along the downtown strip that tell you how far away it is. It's in a cute spot with plenty of restaurants and bars nearby. The line to get in moved quickly with security quickly checking bags (no bag restrictions unlike other reviews have stated). We thought great this will be a piece of cake! Inside there is a lobby bar to the left and merchandise to the right. The bar was typical show prices but had a nice selection of beer, seltzers, and wine. There are also bars on the concert floor so you can easily get a drink wherever you're situated here. Everything was going great until the show kicked off and security decided oh yes everyone is already packed like sardines - let's make it worse! We were reprimanded no less than 10 times to move even though we were not blocking any exits or walkways. We noticed security doing this to nearly everyone and I'm just wondering where we are supposed to stand if we can't stand in spots one would typically watch a show at any other venue. So while security for bag check was great, inside security was horrendous and rude. Bathrooms are only located on the second floor so enjoy the windy steps. The ladies room is huge which is a bonus and the line moves quick. Also very clean. The acoustics on the floor are great and there are no bad views here. Easy to see and listen to the entire set. Just be prepared to move a lot as security cannot decide where everyone should stay during the show. Getting out was simple and we were able to get an Uber in under a minute. Would I see another show here? Possibly. But please do something about security or don't cram so many into the place at one time. read more

Got to experience the Pink Floyd laser show after winning a pair of tickets (thanks to Yelp). Chairs were added where the standing section normally would be in front of the stage. Not sure why considering the venue wasn't strict with Covid guidelines - not all staff wore masks and we weren't socially distanced, sitting right next to others with barely 6 inches between us, let alone 6 feet. Also, the venue wasn't packed so we could've sat in one of the normal theater seats - been more comfortable, socially distanced and had a better view. The show started later than expected and so we left during intermission. What we did see was unique. It could be viewed with or without the 3D frames and you don't have to be a fan of the band to enjoy the show. Security check was outside so be prepared in case you go in the winter months. Staff was friendly and I like the aesthetic of the venue. I'd consider returning in the future, perhaps for a comedy show, when it feels more safe. read more

I've been here pre-covid to see Ghostface Killah of the Wu Tang Clan and had a great time! Came back to see the Roots perform and still have no complaints. Finding parking was rough. Usually I can find a spot on the street and pay at the meter but this time I went with public parking. We had to wear a mask, and show proof of both vaccine shots to get in. We had to go back to the car because my date's purse was too big to get in there. They didn't search us so we could have brought our cartridges in after all. Once we got inside, people were walking around without their masks and it definitely smelt like weed during the show. There was a bar down stairs and upstairs. The one downstairs last had less options. I didn't see any snacks but there was merchandise. The tickets were for 7pm and the roots didn't come out until around 9. They put on a great show! I have their albums and knew they used instruments, but didn't realize there were 9 band members. The auditorium seats are great so you don't have to worry about not being able to see over the person in front of you. The sound system was awesome as well! If there's an artist you want to see and they perform here, it's a no brainer. read more
