I first made an appointment because of a gift card, and though it's a little farther to drive, it's worth it for a variety of professional massage therapists & services to choose from. I haven't tried the float therapy yet but I've heard good things. Once you get there, it's easy to find parking, receptionists are friendly and knowledgeable. I started getting massages with Sonya and never looked back! She seems to know just the right pressure and though I don't usually go in to get my sinuses cleared, somehow that happens too. I came here for a prenatal massage and it was absolutely amazing. The staff is incredible professional, polite, and informative. This is nothing like one of the chain massage or spa places. They really take the time to help you with any problem areas and for a prenatal massage they have everything so you can lie on your stomach (yay!). Then last week I happened to be riding my bike past the business when I had an accident and had to be taken to the hospital. They took my bike in and kept it safe until I could retrieve it. I have been going to The Wellness Center the past 3 months for pain swelling and post surgical healing. I have a pretty tough diagnosis. I saw Calvin for my care and at first I was going once a week. I had lymphatic drainage massage with sweedish massage combo. I could not believe the difference. The swelling went down with my first 60 minute session. I scheduled follow up weekly for the next two weeks then I started backing off to maintenance monthly unless I had infusion then I utilized care just to soothe the aches and relax tension. You really have to try it! May I add that you are greeted with a friendly and helpful secretary at the front desk. Massage sessions always on time. I truly give this my highest rating and believe me, I've been to several other places. This place is the right place for me! read more

Had a 90 minute massage with Michael. Afterwards, I still had kinks in my neck and my massage was more like 82 minutes. I will take the blame for 5 of those 8 minutes I missed. And maybe the extra eight minutes would allow me to bump them up a star, but I doubt it. Even though the name does not suggest it, this IS NOT a spa; I just want to be clear that this will not be a spa experience. For instance, the massage room is not insulated well so you can hear everyone walking and talking in the hallway. This was the first time I didn't fall asleep in a massage because I just couldn't get comfortable. The room was cold but the bed was heated. So that helped...a little. At first I thought Michael was talking too much but he eventually simmered the conversation down. There is street parking on the side and also a small lot that you can utilize. Coming from Richfield I was sent through a neighborhood of houses and was very certain that my GPS was steering me wrong. However, BAM!! The location pops up in the middle of this neighborhood. I have been going to massage therapists for years, and I can say jewel is top 3. She took the time before my session to ask about my problem areas, and told me her methodology to help her clients. The first session was more investigative for the whole body, and while I wanted a deep tissue massage, she would go as deep tissue as my body would allow it to, to avoid hurting my muscles and forcing them to an uncomfortable state. The bed was heated, music was soothing, it was dark and quiet so it was perfect. I fell asleep per usual, and I think the peppermint oil helped to soothe my pain. She used a couple of hot towels which was new to me and very helpful. Lastly, after the session was wrote out a list of what she saw as problem areas and offered me a couple stretches to help. She gave me advice on a soothing gel called arnica for my carpel tunnel, and a ball to work out knots on my back. She didn't pressure me to come back, but when I asked she recommended me to come back for a 90 minute session for 2 more sessions, including changes in my lifestyle to help with chronic back pain. I wish they'd stay open a bit later like they used to- it's hard to rush there after work with traffic- I get all frantic driving in rush hour on the way to relax and they kind of cancel each other out. I was searching out for somewhere in the Twin Cities that had a "sensory deprivation chamber" after seeing Lisa and Homer do it on The Simpsons (true story!!). Anyway, I finally came across The Wellness Center. They've got a float tank that works pretty much the same way as the one on tv! I had to try it! It looked a little expensive, so I had bookmarked it and kept revisiting it every once in a while. Then one lucky morning, I got an email from Groupon featuring their float tank. YES!! I bought it right away and scheduled. When I arrived, I was promptly greeted and checked in. The decor wasn't as nice as other spas I've been too but it was ok. The place was bright and well-kept. The employee took me down to the basement where they have the float tank. I was brought into a bathroom/changing room and explained that I had an hour to float, and to just relax. The changing room wasn't all that different from a hotel bathroom. It had a small shower stall, sink, and toilet. The float tank room though, was nicely appointed and looked relaxing. The tank itself is a big plastic bin. Sort of like a small-ish dumpster. I know that sounds bad, but it's not. That just sort of the size and shape of the tub. It's fully enclosed but not claustrophobic. Inside there are controls to turn mood lighting on and off. Music is piped in from the stereo system. you just lie there and float. It's sort of like the dead sea. The water has so much salt in it that you become buoyant. The floating experience was interesting. At first I had a hard time settling in and just relaxing. My mind was having trouble becoming un-alert and stopping to worry about me drowning. It was very relaxing. After a while though, my neck started to get a little sore. I don't know if I was unconsciously straining my neck to stay above water or what. It started to get tight. The only downside, is that it didn't seem to be heated. The water was kind of cold and as time went on I started to shiver. I took this as a sign to get out and take a hot shower. Looking at the clock though I was in there for almost an hour without realizing it. It would be nice if the water had a heater or if they had a heater fan periodically blowing in warm air. It was a fun experience though. Unfortunately, I didn't have visions or hallucinations from sensory deprivation like they did on The Simpsons. It was still relaxing and a fun experience though. Miraculous! Major improvement noted in the past 6 months! By the age of 60 I had picked up various chronic aches in my spine and shoulders. After about 9 messages in the past 7 months I can report significant improvement. The numbness and tingling radiating down to my wrist/thumb is gone. I now have full range of motion in my neck and both shoulders. Best of all, I "collect" far less stress between my shoulder blades. Admittedly, I have also used their affiliated chiropractor and an accupunturist. But particularly the deep tissue "release" work has been a critical part of my restored condition. The Wellness Center is a reliable solution for chronic pain. I was first drawn to the float tank therapy, which is very affordable here. They've recently updated the basement float room, which is now quiet, clean, and serene. The facility itself is somewhat clinical, but that coincides with the professionalism you experience. No fluffy stuff here. I've seen 3 or 4 of the massage therapists and they've all been very skilled, but Stephanie is exceptional. She is my go-to therapist, always consistent and she pulls out all the stops to get where she needs to go to get those pesky muscles to really release. They also recently refined their membership, which is a lot more accessible and understandable. I look forward to my (at least) monthly visits for years to come. read more

I haven't been to a massage in ages. My husband got me an hour long massage with Calvin. This was the best massage I've ever had. It started light and gained intensity throughout, and he consistently asked about my comfort level which was great. And the massage went deep and although it was so intense, it was also so healing. I felt like I have gained inches of space between my shoulders and ears, and released so much tension and old stuck emotional energy. After it was over, and I was on my way out, I accidentally shouted at him, "that was transformational" instead of just using a regular speaking voice like a normal person, just because I was so mind blown by the whole thing. Calvin has a calm, relaxing demeanor, and was kind and helpful, explaining what to expect before and how to take care of myself after the massage. I recently came here for a massage/float combo. It was my first time at this location. My massage therapist was nice and was able to definitely loosen me up. I had wanted her to spend more time on a specific area which she did not - this was probably my error in not making myself incredibly clear. The center was very busy the day I was there. I was taken out of the massage room into the lobby to sit and drink water until I could go in the float tank. This was the only thing I took issue with. Sitting there in nothing but an oversized robe with massage chair lines all over my face in the main entrance was fairly uncomfortable. I was ushered downstairs shortly after to the float room, only to find out it was still occupied. I waited downstairs this time, which was much more comfortable. I sat outside the room while it was cleaned after the person before me exited, and was finally able to enter. Despite being busy, the lady helping me was able to thoroughly go over everything with me for my float session. I had brought my own music to be played for the duration of the float, and once inside discovered that instead of hitting repeat all, she had programmed it to repeat the 1st song only which made for an interesting hour and a half. Floating itself was quite the experience. I could not figure out how to get the provided ear plugs in correctly which was a big downfall since the salt water got in my ears and gave me headaches for over a week. Being my first time I played around with body position and lights on/off and got used to the experience of it all. I will go back now that I know what to expect. I've been to this place about four times and you really can't beat it, especially if you live in South Minneapolis. After the week I had at the office I just needed something that would let me chill out and relax. I had a 60 minute deep tissue massage that left me feeling relaxed and refreshed. I am so gratified that I recently bought the BEST gifts for my sister in the hospital from The Wellness Center! The lightly scented, small warming blanket was heavenly soothing for her abdomen after surgery (FAR superior to the tiny 5-minute heat packs the nurses could give her). And the very reasonably priced essential oils & lovely nature sounds & other calming CDs countered the hospital's pervasive antiseptic smells & constant beeping noises. Diane, the Wellness Center office manager helped me choose great items & even called the blanket company to determine which herbs were in the blanket--she was really helpful & compassionate. I found out about this place when an out of town friend recommended that I try a sensory isolation tank float. From what she said, floats were expensive but awesome. I did some research online and the minneapolis float scene (ha) is comparable in variety to the bigger cities on the coasts, and the wellness center is significantly cheaper. I went and it was like easy-mode meditation; floating had all the benefits of typical meditation without all the tedious self discipline and clearing your mind and controlling your breathing. Cool beans. I got my girlfriend a massage there and she immediately got a year-long membership. They were happy to put my name on the card as well so I can get discounted floats and massages as well. I'm now going for floats about once a month, and the extra relaxation and clarity is definitely worth it. I've had a few massages there by now and they've all been good. It seems like a lot of their therapists focus on actual therapy - helping damaged muscles and chronic pain problems. That's not to say that they don't have people that can give the standard stress-relief style massage, but they've been really good about helping with specific muscle problems I've had. The staff members are very friendly and helpful. If you're going there for the first time, tell the receptionist exactly what you want your massage to do and follow to their recommendations. Likewise, the therapists want to know your specific situation and tailor the session accordingly. The environment is warm and welcoming without being hippy-dippy. read more

I had lower back pain due to moving a heavy table and bending my back doing gardening work. I called for an appointment and explained my pain situation. The Wellness Center's waiting area is very clean and the front desk staff are very friendly. I explained my lower back pain situation to my massage therapist (Kari). She found my lower back pain points within 5 minutes and worked on them to relax the tight muscles. At the end of my 60 minutes massage, my lower back pain is almost gone. I've been a client at the Wellness Center for 15+ years and have always had an excellent experience. Over the years I have seen many different therapists and they've all been wonderful. I recently began having Thai massage which I highly recommend. I find the combination of massage and stretching leaves me feeling better for longer. I suffer from regular back and neck pain due to my occupation and I hold all of my stress in my back. I've tried a lot of different massage places, and I now I only go to the Wellness Center. I have regular massages to make sure I don't tighten up and I feel great! I joined their wellness club and save $15 every time I go.
