Went with friends that are regulars. They ordered everything for the table. We had SO many appetizers and they just kept on coming. EVERYTHING was truly delicious! The eggs, mushrooms, carrots (spicy- yum!), potatoes, etc. And while I don't normally drink, I ordered a cocktail. It was also delicious! Great job with the food, service, et al. My only reservation was the price. We split the bill in two and it was $200 for two of us. Yikes! While I was a bit surprised, at least the food was worth the dinner. No one blends flavors like the chef here, and he does it on the fly with whatever is fresh and locally sourced.

This review only regards the lunch menu, mainly the appetizers. First of all it's a very nice setting and the staff went beyond their way to make our late lunch a great experience. Unfortunately the food we ordered to share was for the most part uninspiring. The deviled eggs were OK, I enjoyed the little fried oyster and pickled onion on top but the actual egg part of the dish was lacking flavor. And $14 for what is essentially two whole eggs seems a bit much. Barbecued clams could've been much better if they didn't drown it in barbecue sauce. Basically all you taste is barbecue sauce. Maybe add just a tiny drop or maybe a different sauce all together. The octopus appetizer was the worst of the group. The flavors are all over the place and none of them are enjoyable. Octopus has a delicate flavor which was masked by the aïoli/paprika/charred taste. In my opinion this appetizer needs to be reworked or totally dropped. The basket of fries was fine, you get a pretty good amount for what you pay and they were tasty and the accompanying sauces were very good. The burrata was also very good, I suspect it's not made in-house as It is somewhat of a specialty product. If it is made in house then kudos to the chef. It paired well with the onion and honey but $19 is too much for something that is essentially bought from a supplier. The squid ink cavatelli was a disappointment. The pasta itself was not the correct shape, instead it was more like Mike and Ike candies. They were dense and flavorless. The sauce was nothing special and the shrimp pieces were overcooked. To be fair this took place late in the day and the kitchen was almost closing but I can't imagine these dishes would've been much different had we been earlier. Pricing seems a bit steep for what you get, I realize it's Westport, I realize everything costs more, and running a restaurant is tough business but it still seems like everything is overpriced by at least three or four dollars.. The highlight of the experience was the staff who were all very gracious and I'm sure wanted us out of there as they reset for dinner but claimed we could stay and it was no problem. Always leave happy. This restaurant , although not inexpensive...it is worth it. Many small plate options. My suggestions would be the scallops, and the shrimp and Gritts. You cant go wrong...they are all good. For my entree, the Cod was well prepared and flavorful. Full bar and a descent wine list. Usually very busy. Reservations are usually needed if you want to be seated after 6:30. There is also a community table and the bar if you are dining alone. Just came from a wonderful meal at Whelk! Heard great things, it exceeded my expectations.. Recommend the periwinkles on pumpernickel(needs less bread), warm peeky-toe crab fondue(awesome!), gulf shrimp and grits, squid ink cavatelli, red shrimp..... Have been here a few times, and have loved it every time. The menu changes based on what's in season, so there's always a good variety of fresh, imaginative dishes. They don't always have reservations available, but they have a community table and a nice bar, which makes it easy to drop in (if you go early). read more

There were 4 of us for dinner. Our reservation was for 9:15. It was the earliest available and pretty late for dinner in the USA. Never-the-less we waited another 15 minutes to be seated. The service was attentive, but the menu very hard to read and the prices were stuck in as part of the ingredients line, so almost invisible. The wine was very nice and probably the price was not too padded. The oysters were excellent, but fairly expensive. The mussels, the squid ink cavatelli and the fried cauliflower were very good but the rest of the dishes we sampled, smoked trout dip, grilled octopus and shrimp and grits were average. The decor is so pared down it befits a simple seafood place on the shore but the pricing is anything but suitable to that type of place. read more

Have eaten hear a dozen times and the food is always top notch. Their wine list was something I looked forward to looking through, not a big wine list but very well put together. Dined there recently and the wine list is a complete mess. Over priced and the selection was minimal. Cheapest Chardonnay was $150, cheapest Champagne was $212. I know we are in westport but thats just stupid...hope they have not lost their way....will no be going back anytime soon. read more

The lights were turned down so low in this place that it became a grab-race to see which of us could get the table candle first to read our menu. After that fun, the rest of us had to sit there holding up phone flashlights like it was the end of a rock concert. We had a female waitress whose name none of know and she came across as rather condescending. The food, from what we could squint at and sort of manage to see when it finally came out, was nice looking but there were many unpleasant surprises on or alongside some dishes (like a very hot and odd spice generously poured all over the carrot side dish). This heavy handedness smacked of a pretentiousness along the lines of "you will eat it the way we serve it and too bad." This really made a few dishes a lot less enjoyable for us than they might have been and we felt like the establishment was just kind of cold and a tad full of itself. We got the feeling they wouldn't care much how we felt anyway, as some apparent regulars or friends of theirs were there and had much of the staff's attention the whole time. While they were all yukking it up, we had to wave and wait a while when we needed assistance with anything. It's pricey. Portions range from a small to almost normal size. We all agreed that this was not an enjoyable dining experience and that we left feeling cheated out of a nice evening meal. read more

We regularly dine at the Welk. It's consistently very good. If you like seafood I highly recommend it. They have a great regularly changing selection of fresh oysters and other raw bar items. The chilled giant prawns are very good. The deviled eggs with fried oysters and the grilled octopus are also great. They also have delicious entree items like the lobster butter. The drinks and wine list a very good too. The service is consistently good and management is attentive. The only drawback is it is a bit pricey. The cost with multiple small plates and drinks can add up quickly. read more

One of my favorite restaurants in CT! The food here is amazing. We've had the octopus, squid ink dish, scallops and the oysters. The servers are very attentive and helpful. The oysters are some of the best I've had in the northeast (Tip: during happy hour, they're $1/piece)! The Whelk - Wesport, CT A couple of weeks ago I was driving back from Pennsylvania and couldn't decide where to go for dinner. I had a real hankering for a burger and immediately remembered how much I love the gourmet burgers at The Whelk. I called the restaurant and of course they were totally booked, but the hostess said that I could eat at the bar. It was about 6:45pm on a Friday night and the place was packed when I pulled up. I decided to park anyway and try my luck. After checking in I was immediately seated at the bar and given a menu. Of course I knew that I had to have that delicious burger, but saw the muscles on the appetizer column. I ordered the muscles to start and the burger for my main course. The muscles were absolutely delicious and the broth was to die for. The server asked me if I was done, and I was, but I just couldn't let her take that delicious broth away. I told her I wanted to hang on to the broth. My burger came right up and I dug immediately dup in. Patrons at the bar were super friendly as well as the staff. I was having such a good time talking with Massimo and everyone around me. Suddenly I decided to dip my fries into the leftover muscle broth. It was so unbelievably delicious that I ended up dumping all of my fries into the broth and fishing them out by the handfuls. Eating the burger and fries soaked in muscle broth. My God I needed a shower! Patrons and the staff were still chatting away with me and I have to admit I was having the best time. Chef Bill Taibe came out of the kitchen to say hello and admitted that his muscle broth has become the condiment of choice for the fries. I have decided that The Whelk has become the Cheers of Fairfield County. Even if they don't know your name they will welcome you with open arms anyway. read more

Our expectations of The Whelk were set high after dining at Le Farm, its wonderful sister restaurant down the road on Post East. To assist both the restaurateur and prospective diner, I will comment objectively on the experience, so that adjustments might be made to refine a place with great potential. While some of this may appear harsh, it is raw and untainted feedback, for the benefit of the reader. Décor 8/10 - Tables were farm-to-table fashionable, and paired well with the wainscoting around the perimeter, elevating the nautical feel. If the open areas were better accessorized, it would really bring the décor to life. Two seashells on the wall rail for example, appeared to be placed there to fill the space, rather than highlight the theme. A small planter with herbs might be a better option. Overall, a nice interior. Unfortunately, table density was problematic both in feeling like you were on top of other patrons, and involved in their conversation. Once the restaurant filled, it was very, very loud. Staff Appearance 5/10- Friendly, but sloppy. Our server was pleasant, however, she was covered in dog hair. That none of her colleagues pointed this out to her was equally surprising. A sweaty kitchen employee came onto the floor 2-3 times over the span of 30 minutes, with her shirt hiked up her back, revealing her lower-back tattoo. Something we might expect at Coyote Ugly, but not at The Whelk. The restaurant manager should conduct a pre-dinner quality check to ensure all staff look sharp and are on point. Service 7/10 - Service was above average, but not quite excellent. The runners were great, and attentive to empty water glasses and completed dishes. Food delivery was also good, however, not organized. We were never asked which dishes we preferred first, and the food arrived in somewhat chaotic fashion. The server in this instance, might have asked us how we wanted to pair our tapas/appetizers and/or who was the primary consumer of each plate. My wife specifically asked that the pork dishes be placed in front of me, yet they were placed in front of her by the runner, and she was turned off. Food 4/10 Overall - On average, the food was not great, and far below our expectations. The pickled onions were used in too many dishes, and inappropriately in some. Many of the dishes were overdone, where less would have been more. Complexity is great, when the ingredients work together. That was lacking in the Street Corn, Deviled Eggs w/Oysters, Pork Belly, and Octopus Sauce. 10/10 Burrata - Arguably the highlight of the experience. Presented nicely with a lightly toasted rustic bread, accented with light greens. 10/10 Jonah Crab Claws - Presented well and very fresh. A highlight! Weighted less in the overall food score, however, as there is no cookery involved, only preparation and presentation. 7/10 Pig Tails - A great way to use all parts. While offensive to the vegetarian, an interesting and tasty appetizer for swine-lovers. Difficult to eat with a fork/knife. Maple mustard sauce was excellent. 6/10 Deviled Eggs w/Oysters - Bland overall with little to no flavor in the fried oyster. The egg filling did not quite hit the mark. Presented nicely, but uneventful in flavor. 3/10 Pork Belly - Not crispy on the top, and the surrounding accouterments could best be described as a mushy mess. Even the beautiful artichokes were destroyed by the sauce. This dish fell very short of its potential. 2/10 - Griddled Octopus - One of the low points of the experience. I can only speculate that the tips of the $56 2-person Griddled Octopus were used as the primary ingredient for this appetizer. Offensively insufficient octopus. It was coated in a "slime" that could not decide what it wanted to be. The only good element of the dish was the tomato medley. read more

Remember when the best meal in town was at Arnie Kay's International Deli? Well, Westport has come a long way since then. For a while it looked like this town wasn't a beacon for well prepared food. People just didn't seem to care. They were content with The Duck, Onion Alley and V. And now look at us! There's Tarry Lodge, the Spotted Horse (is anyone going to call these guys on stealing their name from the Spotted Pig?), Le Farm, and it's newer, fishier cousin, the Whelk, plus lots of other places with nice food that I haven't mentioned. So why do I feel compelled to update my Whelk review? It's not the food. It's not the service. It's the people who DINE at the Whelk who need to be reviewed. If I thought reviewing the Whelk patrons would bear fruit and these self-involved whiners would stop going out in public, I'd feel cheered. But they will read reviews like this and assume I'm talking about those other whiny, self-involved, rude bar hogs who sat next to them the last time I dined there with a friend. Sadly, the Whelk attracts the kind of people who excel in righteous indignation, mean-spirited insults, oblivious disregard for their fellow diners, and generally unpleasant, ugly behavior. But at least these social wannabe losers will dress up for the occasion. The women's uniform doesn't stray far from the essential skinny jeans, decorative bustier, strappy heels, Keratin blow out, and beachy blonde highlights. Their dates or husbands or whatever you care to call the oafs who escort them out in public take similar care with their coiffures. Hair mussed just so. The perfect amount of growth on the chin. And enough imperiousness to make the eunuchs go running for cover. My dining companion, who lives in the city, remarked that when she goes out, no one ever looks this "done up". These people all look fabulous, but lose points for trying too hard. Too much effort for mediocre results. And if only the effrontery ended there. On a busy night, even if you have a reservation, you can expect to wait. Sometimes a lot. This happens for a couple really great reasons, reasons that will make you delight to call Westport home, the principle one being that bar patrons in particular will linger over an empty clam shell in order to hold on to their real estate as long as they can. While we waited for spots to open at the bar, a wait we were told would be 20 minutes, we watched three groups linger painfully over morsels so small, The Grinch would have left them behind. One group of four first ordered one desert to share, then another. The entire process swallowed up an hour. Great evolutionary leaps have taken less time. And knowing others were awaiting their spots had zero effect on these stool hogs, who also clearly had no compunction about monopolizing the bartender's time, ordering little, and tipping accordingly. Two women to our right sat at the bar for hours, sharing two appetizers. Another couple, who had been waiting for a table, sidled up to the bar without being seated but still expected they'd be seated at a table when one opened. That's not how the Whelk works. There are tables. There is a one large communal table. And there is the bar. You can order anything off the menu at any of these locations. Sit at the bar while you're waiting for your table, and you're taking seats away from people who want to eat. When the motherless dog I assumed was the husband got up to inquire about his table, he returned in a huff. "They said since we sat ourselves at the bar, they thought we no longer wanted a table. I'd get it if the hostesses were hot, but....." Well, I shall spare you the rest. Suffice it to say, the hostesses that night were absolutely adorable. I guess if you'e looking for the slutty, Lindsay Lohan "oops, I forgot to wear my panties" kind of hostess, maybe you should try Scores. So once again, four stars for the food. The shrimp and brussels sprouts and mussels were delicious. The people I could do without. Or as my brother used to say, you can dress 'em up, but you can't take 'em anywhere. read more

TWO GRIPES. #1. SMALL - REALLY SMALL - portions on a menu that reads like a laundry or shopping list/ The waitress tried to explain all the different placement/app vs. dinner items over the noise but after a lengthy explanation - much felt lost in translation. Shouldn't be so difficult. So we picked a variety. Suffice it to say when we got home I ended up eating a sandwich at midnight. My bad. #2, NO BREAD. Yes, silly I know. But there was a lot of rich sauce in each dish (none of which were more than a few shared bites) that needed to be sopped up but NO BREAD. Had to ask and they brought out two measly tiny sweet rolls like you get at Aunt Betty's for Easter. Or the Stop and Shop. This was a jarring taste oxymoron (like rap music at intermission for a ballet recital) for a place that positions itself as haute-cuisine on the river. When dropping 2 Benjamins for some small plates (the softshell crab WAS the best we've had in a long time), and wine, the very least is a small basket of warm ciabatta or some other crusty bread. Overall the food was inventive but no more so than some other area places. And not worth $240 for two including tip. We don't mind dropping that kind of change on a truly great dinner. Sorry, this was nice but did not nearly meet our expectations after all the buzz and rave reviews. read more

Wow!!! What a great experience. The food was excellent! Went around 6:00 on Friday night ( of course only a few people) we sat at the bar and enjoyed lots of different dishes... First things first SERVICE was Excellent!!!! Started with the blackened shrimp with this spicy mayo this was excellent as were the steamed clams... The clams were in this briny seafood broth that was warm with bacon, you want to pick up the bowl and drink it , it was that good. Then we had the lamb belly ribs these were fall off the bone with a heavy herb topping and great hint of coriander...then on to the dry aged burger, this is out of this world !!! Best burger in fairfield county by far... BBQ clams with bacon these were very good I would have enjoyed a little less BBQ sauce, I really like clam flavor. Tried a few raw oysters Excellent and Fresh. I'm not a big grits person but we saw another couple enjoying the shrimp and grits so we gave it a try and wow I was impressed the grits were creamy and delicious and the shrimp had so much flavor and cooked perfect... Dessert was a big hit , the warm vanilla cake was fantastic and the pumpkin spice bread pudding were the perfect endings to an amazing meal...My new favorite restaurant in Westport... What was I waiting for I drive by this place everyday.... I can't wait to go back :)) read more

After reading amazing reviews, I had to try this restaurant out. We chose to go on a quiet night and made a reservation. Upon arriving, the hostess was incredibly rude. Only one other table was seated and she sat us right next to them. We asked to move to another table so we weren't directly next to someone especially since the restaurant was quiet. The hostess was annoyed and actually rolled her eyes and huffed about it. Not a good way to start dinner. It's sad because the food was pretty good. A half hour into dinner, she came back over and said she needed our table by 7:45. She was obviously annoyed. It was 6:10 at that point and we assured her we would be out by then. Just weird. The waiter was incredibly friendly however. The trout dip was amazing. The burgers were ok. I've had better elsewhere. I probably won't go back though after the negative customer service. hmmm where to start this review. I understand why people like this restaurant, and why it is written up everywhere. Location, decor, dining crowd. Maybe somewhat the food. Maybe. You have to be an oyster fan. Lets just be honest about this. 80% of the menu is oyster based. This is why we have been putting off trying this place. I am not a huge oyster fan, but went with the flow. That said, what we had that WASN'T oyster based was pretty good. The Octopus was excellent. The porchetta was good, but both dishes served with beans...(variety?) We were underwhelmed by the deviled eggs (with fried oyster) and the bacon fried rice balls. The salad as very average, we were expecting more. The service was good, if not a bit slow (but a friendly knowledgable waitress). I think this is more because people like to linger at their tables. Maybe this is why its so hard to get a reservation? We went mid week and it was still pretty busy at 9:30/10pm. I'm ok ticking this one off my list but not in a hurry to go back at all. read more

But.... we are so turned off by the small print on the menu that states a 3% tip will be added to our bill for the cooks so they can make a decent living wage. Sorry but aren't they hired employees that should be getting paid a livable salary? Why is that our responsibility? Are the prices in the menu not set so they make a profit. Isn't the cost of labor calculated into the prices so they make money? It isn't the $1.53 we were charged it's the principal. Should we cut back on our tip to the server? My family and I recently went to The Whelk for dinner and loved it. In retrospect, in fact, the only complaint we had was the initially snobby waiter (that eventually warmed up). At first glance, the menu seems limited at first, but trust me when I say that everything that we ordered was amazing. The sweet potato appetizer was delectable. The octopus was absolutely the best I've had - the accompanying onion escabeche was so tasty and brought what might've been a simple dish to another level. Our main entrees (Monkfish, Lefarm's Roast Chicken, Fried Chicken Sandwich and Dry Aged Cheeseburger) were all wonderful. The food was tasty- no doubt. But lunch for two with one app, two small plates, and two beers cost us just about 100.00. And to be honest, the portions were really small. On the plus side, the servers were all super nice and knowledgeable about the menu. They were pleasant and really well trained. If you do decide to try The Whelk (and if you can afford it- you should!) parking can be a bit tricky. Street parking is hard to come by in this part of Westport. read more

I used to be a regular when they first opened. The food is now inconsistent (sometimes great, other times very salty.) When it is busy, the staff seems overwhelmed and indifferent. I would go early at non-peak times, otherwise service and quality do suffer. Menu is heavy on shellfish and pork (not for vegetarians) and portions are exceedingly small. Since demand is still high, management does not feel compelled to be nice or make-up to patrons for mistakes that they have made. read more

This was about to be a two star review, but The Whelk has redeemed itself for me. My boyfriend and I took his parents for dinner during the summer. Made an early reservation, gorgeous setting on the water, quality wine selection, and unique and well executed dishes. We left raving about it. A couple months later, I made a reservation for my boyfriend's birthday because there were so many dishes we didn't get to try the first visit. The point of this review isn't to complain about the experience that ALMOST soured us to the restaurant, so I'll keep this brief. We came in on a Tuesday night for an 8:30 reservation, spent $50 at the bar, had to follow up with the host regarding our table, and ordered an app while we waited, only to be informed it was out for the day (it was broccoli, not seafood). I was so upset by the time our table freed up at 9 that we left for the night and ordered pizza. Birthday fail. I followed up by detailing our experience in an email to the restaurant, asking only for my $50 bar tab to be refunded. I love The Whelk's food and did NOT want to hate the place, so I hoped for a positive response. The owner, Massimo, followed up with multiple phone calls apologizing profusely, and on top of that, wanted to bring us back in for a full dinner and wine pairings. While there was no excuse for our bad service, he did offer some explanation which I thought was very thoughtful (to be fair, the table that wouldn't leave and the difficult reviewer on the night we came in were out of their control, even though the service was not). We went in last night for this "make up" dinner and it was amazing. We were seated immediately, waited on by Massimo and several other servers, and served about 6 dishes plus dessert (with a birthday candle) and 4 wine pairings (hello tipsy Tuesday). I don't really feel the need for a detailed discussion of the food, because nothing I've ordered has been less than exceptional--try it all, and don't skip the deviled eggs! Even my egg-hating boyfriend scarfed two. Additionally, our check consisted of a refund for the previous visit's bar tab! We had an awesome night and will definitely be back. I really think (and hopefully will continue to be convinced) that our bad experience was a one off for The Whelk. read more

Atmosphere is very nice and everyone was very nice. Food was great. There were 7 of us for lunch. We had the deviled eggs with fried oysters which were yummy. I had the lobster roll.. it was ok.
