Absolutely fantastic! I took my mom out for lunch at this place and she loved it. She said the fried okra reminded her of how her mom used to make it (and her mom was from Georgia...true southern cooking). In fact, my mom hadn't even ordered the okra because she was afraid it wouldn't be up to her standards. Everyone at work raves about this place so I packed up the neighbors and we drove to Conroe, We live in Spring so it's not close the cafe was decorated great for it's concept. They were busy probably 5 to six tables had people. Their appeared to be only one waitress trying to handle all the tables as well as someone coming in every 5 to 10 minutes to eat. We all ordered and I had to try the daily special all you can eat Catfish. The food we ordered took about 20 minutes to arrive everyone really liked their food but no one ever came to check on us once the food was delivered. I waited and waited and waited to order more catfish and was finally able to get some ones attention just as everyone at the table finished their meals. I asked for three to four pieces of catfish and I waited and waited and finally gave up and we asked for the check and someone at our table inquired as to why no more fish was delivered and the waitress said let me check on it. In 1 minute she was back with four pieces of piping hot grease laddened pieces of catfish that had to be cooked in about 30 seconds and then immediately delivered. The first fish was perfect to me the second was really not edible. As you enter the cafe look around if they are busy turn around and leave the server was nice but the owner just over worked her this day. I would not return. read more

After three attempts to give this place the benefit of the doubt, I've vowed to never return. The setting is usually sticky, unkept, and older looking. (Without the ambience of a cozy older feel.) The food is almost equivalent to a hungry man microwave dinner. My friend found a long black hair in his mashed potatoes on one occasion. My co-worker tried the chili dogs for lunch one day, and had to retreat early that day from stomach pains. Though the prices aren't outrageous, they are still far higher than the actual worth of this poor excuse for cuisine. The service is not prompt, nor is it sincerely friendly. Fast service, good food, fair prices. Salad is fresh, cold and crispy - but could be served in a larger bowl so ingredients don't fall out. Fried pork chop, chicken fried steak and fries are very good. Mashed potatoes were lumpy and skimpy. Green beans were flavorless - no seasoning. Fried okra was great. Banana pudding was passable. - only 3 banana slices that had turned black. Yukh! Coconut cream pie had just a smattering of coconut on top - tasted like it came from a can of pudding. Looking for a place with "local" flavor while we're in town. This place popped up on a trip advising web site, and 99% of the reviews are accurate - great food, very friendly staff, reasonable prices and comfortable surroundings. My husband had the chopped steak with fried okra and salad as his sides, I had the Monday night special of chicken fried steak with hand-cut fries and salad. The breading on the chicken fried steak had just the right amount of spice to it (apologizing for my "bland" palate, I'm from the midwest), complimented the creamy gravy well. My husband's quarter pound chopped steak was done to his satisfaction and loaded with onions, he passed on the mushrooms. The brown gravy on the side was the best way to do it. To top it off, he had the peach cobbler, still warm from the oven, and I had the coconut cream pie, both obviously homemade and delectable. Austin our server was attentive and easygoing. If we weren't leaving town so early in the morning tomorrow, we'd go back for breakfast! read more

I've driven past this place so many times and finally went to lunch here with my family. It's a cute little diner and is pretty affordable. We shared some fried mushrooms, which were a big hit. I got a cup of chicken and dumplings, as well as a side salad. I had to salt and pepper the soup, but it was still really good... and well, I don't know how you could mess up a salad. We searched yelp for fried green tomatoes and chicken fried steak and were drawn to the Whistle Stop Cafe. The strip mall housing this place had become invisible to me over the years because it was just a bunch of cabinet and paint stores. I was excited that this place looks legit and the Whistle Stop Cafe name tugged at my heart strings. Fried green tomatoes is my favorite food, book, and movie (The Simpsons reference). The store front is beautiful and the inside is modest. The service is very friendly and laid back. There is a man who appears to be the owner and he seems very passionate about his product. He told us that everything is homemade, hand cut fries, hand battered, etc. The appetizers that we ordered, onion rings, hush puppies, and fried green tomatoes came out and set the bar really high. These really are the best onion rings that I have ever had. They are thick cut onions in a crispy, flaky breading that is 100% southern comfort food. The appetizers were served piping hot and were an absolute hit! I had a chicken fried chicken sandwich and it had the consistency of a pork chop, as it was a little tough. The perfect white gravy saved the chicken fried chicken sandwich. The hand cut fries looked great, but they seemed a little overdone, like they were dipped in the oil one too many times or were reheated in the fryer after having already been fully cooked. Two of our dinners were sent to the table piping hot and two of them were sent to the table cold. If you're having trouble sending dishes out at the same time, then I say they should just send them out when they're done, because cold mashed potatoes is kind of unpleasant. My wife and I ate @ the WSC today about 1300 hours! I ordered the burger basket and my wife ordered chicken fried steak with sweet potatoe fries and a side salad. My French fries were a bit soggy and my wife's salad had bits of rotten lettuce throughout . The first bite into my burger there was the stem end of a tomato as well as the second bite, and even the 5th bite I got ANOTHER stem end of a tomato. Multiple tomatoes with stems. @ my house these parts usually go into the compost ! The waitress came over and and was really sweet and professional (the only reason for the 2 stars). When the manager came over however she was very aggitated and quite frankly rude. (Yes I am kind of an asshole) I said "I only have 2 questions #1 are you all out of tomatoes? And #2 did you pull my tomatoes out of the trash?" She then proceeded to argue with us and say that it was "insulting to them to accuse them of using garabage tomatoes". She then informed us there would be no charge and we are "free to leave and never come back". Very rude and very low standards. read more

If you wants lots of fried (also means greasy) food, then this would be the place for you. However, first check out the restroom. I find if a restaurant has dirty restrooms, the kitchen is not much better. My husband said the men's room was pretty bad as well. We've eaten here three times before I used the ladies' restroom but no more. Sink was so dirty I didn't want to touch it! Will say they have delightful service people who are very helpful and friendly! Time for WSC to clean up their act! read more

We eat here at least once a week; if not more. Every entree we have had has been great! The catfish, chicken fried steak, chicken fried chicken and burgers are awesome! Most of the side are good too. The fries and onion rings are awesome as are the desserts! I don't care for biscuits at breakfast they're too thick and heavy. Not wild about the green beans and new potatoes either. The staff are awesome, work very hard and treat you right. We love it! read more

The all you can eat catfish is a joke. They give you very small pieces that add up to less the half a fillet the first round, then you have to wait for them to cook another very small batch. They load you on fries and take forever to cook the second batch and your full by time it gets to you. so for the price go to a quality resturant and get a full plate with ample fish and slaw that isn't dry and have a good meal . read more
