Love the atmosphere and the hospitality, but for a first time visit, went home to find out that the food was very below our expectations. The food quality had potential, but it honestly seemed like something was the matter with the cook. They gave us an extra dish, and way too many fries that were all raw. (very raw and soggy)The fish was OK and the burger was decent, but the fries were terrible and the cheese onion roll seemed like they put it in the microwave. Do better we paid 50 bucks. read more

First time there today. We were amazed at what a quaint little jewel Pengus' Place is. The "across the pond" menu combined with some great international entrees was very impressive. My family and I were first time customers tonight, we can't wait to be back! I love how it feels like you've been welcomed at someone's home eating their home cooked food. The customer service couldn't have been better. Now the food!! We were given complimentary scratch made mushroom soup that even my 1,3 and 5 year old loved! For dinner we had the Friday special, pop corn chicken, Scottish eggs, Parmo, hand cut fries, and chicken fingers. The portions were massive and we left with so much left overs. Our server (who is also the owner) was extremely rude. After 20 minutes we asked on a status update on our order. Shortly after we could hear her yelling about us through the kitchen door. She then came out and rudely told us it had only been 22 minutes, walked away and slammed the door. The room very cluttered and covered in dust. There were also random dried out bars of soap on the window seals in the dining room. The owner came out at the end and was so rude to us and her employee that other server began to cry in the middle of the dining room. Went for Sunday morning breakfast and wasn't disappointed. Good coffee and service was great. Breakfast potatoes with onions spot on and loved the biscuits. Gravy comes out hot af so be careful not to burn the roof of your mouth, test with fork first like I did. Been down that road before, be careful. Bacon nice and crispy and the eggs the way you like. Little business with limited space felt very welcoming and friendly. Lots of penguins on the wall and a choice of about twenty different flavors of syrup for waffles or pancakes. Don't let your first visual perception deceive you...it's all good. If you are after elegance and ambiance then check all that at the door because when you enter you are greeted by a friendly staff with a very interesting menu to share with you. A diamond in the rough and missed by many, but be one of the few and enjoy this local gem for what it is worth. The Sunday Roast special is to die for with your choice of either beef or pork and when you think you are truly in heaven you will be presented with a bill that is very, very fair. I really hate writing reviews that may negatively impact an establishment so I hope this is received as constructive criticism so here goes...I thought we would try Pengus because it had great reviews on Yelp and my significant other lived in England for years; thought it would be a nice treat. We went on a week night, early evening. Small converted home with only maybe 5 tables max. I ordered the fish & chips which was not cooked all the way, they had absolutely no flavor. My significant other ordered bangers and mash, again no flavor. Sausage roll we ordered for appetizer was the best menu item we had. we were told everything was homemade but then corrected that the sausage rolls we from another source. After reviewing more intently the past reviews it seems maybe they've had a change in management/owners and probably cook. I would suggest taking a close look at the ingredients & spices and maybe crank it up a notch. The server was very nice and did not charge us for the meal. I hope they're able to turn it around! From the outside this place looks a little iffy, but let that fool you. We stopped in today, largely out of curiosity. Could there be a "British" place in Magnolia, Texas? Well, yes. I'm not sure how authentic this place is, but the menu is based on Brit staples. What stood out was the deep flavors in the soup and sauces. The quality of the meats was good too. We ordered the bangers and mash, steak and mushroom pie, and the cottage pie. Service was great, staff were friendly. This isn't fine dining, but it is stick to your ribs goodness. Had lunch here after church today. Small stand alone building just before you get into old Magnolia heading west. My son got the fish and chips, the one called Jonahs Revenge. It was a Cod fillet at least 12" long and battered perfectly on top of a bed of fries. I was surprised he finished the whole thing. My wife had the Shepherds pie with mushy peas. The "pie" came out in a plate, meat on the bottom covered with mashed potatoes and melted cheese. It was delicious and the mushy peas were too. Turns out the peas were homemade using fresh peas, not canned. The gentleman next to us ordered the pancakes. The waitress asked him how many and he said 3. She asked are you sure bcs they are big. He said yes, he was hungry. In a few minutes she brought him his pancakes and a full bottle of syrup. The pancakes were about 10" around and almost an inch thick. The guy almost fell out of his chair. She said "I warned you" Great little find, would like to try their bangers and their curry next time read more

Our group of six were in the area, to attend the Renaissance Fair, and searched for a nearby restaurant. We elected to visit Pengus's Place given some positive reviews on Yelp. The restaurant is found on a busy thoroughfare, and as we visited in the evening, passed the eatery for the poor lighting and diminutive signs marking the place. There is parking for only 6-8 cars, the lot unpaved. The restaurant is smallish, rectangular, assuming the aspect of a mobile home, though it in fact is a permanent structure. Perhaps 8 tables for diners. This is a very basic restaurant, with images reminiscent of Britain on the walls: as i dined, Queen Elizabeth in photograph kept a steady eye on my table manners. Let me repeat: this is a very basic restaurant, with no flair for decoration. The menu offers British and American fare, but most of the menu items feature the former. One couple in our group ordered crab cakes, and unhappily, neither considered highly of the dish. Another ordered grilled chicken, again less than enthusiastic impression. I ordered their healthy version of shepherd pie, the dish of riced cauliflower and lamb. Unfortunately, the entree was completely covered with a thick layer of cheese, a preparation that I thought absolutely negated any "healthy" quality of the pie. Another ordered cod, two planks of fish, sided with vegetables. One of the filets was completely cold, the other somewhat warm. The consensus of these dishes: completely lacking flavor, lacking any spice that might save the dishes. The last member of the group ordered their hamburger, and that was considered ....acceptable. The waitress was attentive, but seemed unsure of the specifics of some of the menu items. The establishment markets itself as a home of excellent, traditional, authentic British entrees. But friends, my lady lived in England for a number of years, and her impression disagreed with the nature and the quality of the entrees. One other item: the restaurant does not have a liquor license, but welcomes BYOB liquids. So would we recommend Pengus' Place? Would we return to sample other items on the menu? Sadly, we must say no. There has been a change in the ownership of the establishment, the original owner/chef turning the operation to one of the employees. Perhaps the new owners need to grow a bit in the restaurant business. read more

This place is definitely small and not a very clean actually it is a filthy hole in the wall restaurant. The food (we had the cod and shrimp) was gross and the French fries were soggy and very greasy. Probably will not go back. read more

My friend ordered the chicken pita and I got the Cottage Pie. I wasn't crazy about it so we switched. Pita had enough chicken for two pitas. The highlight of the meal was the complimentary potato soup. When I go back I plan to see if they'll sell me a big bowl. read more

Run, don't walk! We had the best casual date night here. Come early because they don't stay open late. We had the Large fish and chips(it's not on the menu). They also brought out complimentary Italian vegetable soup to start which was so nice to know we were getting some vegetables in addition to our fried food. They are BYOB so that's another plus for us on a casual date. They make their own Hummus in house so we tried that too in addition to the kabap which was more like a gyro wrap but also nice. Hummus could be a bigger portion but everything else was served in large portions. Get the Chips instead of the fries. read more

We loved this place. If you like cozy, intimate, country, shabby chic settings, and a mix of British and American food, come check this place out! They also have vendors at the back that sell jewelry, candles, gourmet candy, and so on. I'm not sure if that's only on the weekends or a special day of the month. My wife,who comes from newzealand, was missing the meat pies even though she's mostly vegetarian. Don't ask me how that makes sense..it doesn't but that's her reality at the moment. She had saved the place on her yelp favorites list and that's how we decided to check this place out. Her favorite was the Mulligatawny soup. Mine was the Philly cheese steak fries. I so wanted to like this place, it had such good reviews for fish and chips that we drove 45 minutes to try it. The building is what I politely called 'quirky,' both inside and out. Tiny dining room, no AC, random decorations everywhere that gave it a modern day hippie vibe. The waitress was kind but a bit chatty. Hubs had the fish and chips, which was very good, and I had the steak pie. Meat was tender, gravy was just OK and it came in a soup crock with a square piece of puff pastry on top so it was a little awkward to eat (I finally pushed the puff pastry into the gravy.) The cook and waitress talked about having new owners so I suspect the place has lost a step or two. read more

The sweet tea was horrible and left a bad after taste. Possible causes are the water and/or using a plastic container that is retaining taste of stale old tea. Skip the 'Shepherd's pie'. The lamb has no seasoning when it should have at least been sautéed with a bit of seasoning, onion, and Worcestershire sauce. The meat was dry, as was the mashed potato topping. The side serving of cabbage was likewise bland -- no seasoning at all. Gordon Ramsey would be appalled. The Sunday roast was wonderful and saves the review from only being 2 stars. Unfortunately we were continually interrupted by a patron who felt the need to share his life story with ever other word being "I, me, or my." Not the owners fault but the owner and waitress spent their a good deal of time chatting him to such an extent that we felt like we were intruding for any request. Hopefully this patron will be able to keep them in business since he likes bland food and will likely run off other customers. read more

I stopped by a few nights ago with my family in the way over to see the lights at Gullo House. I was looking for something a little more different and off the beaten path, and this place was the perfect place. It's located in an unassuming little building off the side of the road that appears to be a renovated double-wide. The dining area is in one half and the kitchen is in the other. The bathroom is outside. It's absolutely quaint, with a mannequin for decor and a TARDIS back door (see pictures). The owner and server are incredibly sweet and were wonderfully welcoming of my gaggle of kids. We asked about the story of the place, and apparently the owner wanted to make sure there was a family-friendly place to get British food. The food itself was fresh and fantastic. Hubby ordered the Philly cheesesteak fries. He's originally from the Philly area, so he is incredibly picky about his cheesesteak. He gave these his seal of approval. His other dish, the fish and chips, was also spot on. I had the stuffed soft-shell crabs and the bangers and mash. The portions were definitely European (you won't be taking them home for seconds). Mash and gravy were good; the bangers tasted more like breakfast sausage than the bangers I've had at other places. The crabs should be on the appetizer menu because they're better as small bites. They're made with imitation crab, but very tasty. They're served with a horseradish ranch sauce. My oldest kiddo ordered the pizza bites, which are interesting deep-fried triangles that contain pepperoni bits and cheese. They're served with a marinara sauce. I thought they were tasty, but picky kiddos might find them too unusual. We also had loaded tots that were good. If you are in the Old Magnolia area, I can't recommend this place enough! read more

You get 3 large chicken breasts served w a salad. my cousin had the one big ass pancake which is amazin too!! All you need is one pancake which is priced at 3.00 and you'll be stuffed. Poor service, next to no British ambiance. A few small tables in a trailer. At one point I got up and pumped myself a refill of coffee from the airpot. Just weird. I ordered the English breakfast, which had most of the things you'd expect, but the tomatoes were sliced, not small halved tomatoes or grilled whole cherry tomatoes the way you'd get in England or Scotland. There was black pudding, but it didn't taste nice. The "bangers" were really one kielbasa-style sausage cut in half lengthwise. This would never ever be served in Britain, not, at least, in my many years of living there. And I don't know what the reason could be for not offering the proper British breakfast links because there are several local British shops where they are sold, not to mention online sources. The experience and ambiance is too much "funky local Texan trailer diner" and not nearly enough "British restaurant", cozy or not, for me to return... and that's a shame as I have only been in Texas a couple of years and would have loved to find a good place for English breakfast. I tried the kebab with fries and it was very nice! The place has a cozy, refreshing atmosphere and the owners and staff were very friendly, funny and charming. There was friendly conversation and good banter to lift the mood and it was most welcome. It seems like a great place to go if you want a bit of charm and a sampling of British foods. The American food looks good too, especially if you have an assortment of friends with different tastes. The owner wanted to try preparing a big traditional English Sunday lunch with Yorkshire pudding, roast meats and other tasty things and it would be cool if that becomes a success. TL;DR: I can easily recommend Pengus's Place. Friendly and charming staff with a fun sense of humor. Tasty English staple foods. A really nice experience! read more

You'll miss the place if you blink, and will probably miss the driveway even if you don't. But do yourself a favor and turn around. You won't regret it. Small and comfy, Pengus and Laurie are fantastic hosts. Funny and charming, you feel welcome immediately. If you can't find something on the menu, you're not really hungry. From traditional burgers and sammies to larger plates like the chicken fried steak and French dip, the food is scratch made and delicious. But Pengus excels at British fare. Classic fish and chips (don't forget the malt vinegar), steak pie, and my wife's British go-to, Scotch Eggs, are represented exceptionally well. I had the fish and chips and they were delicious. Thick battered cod was crispy and the chips, unlike the seasoned fries served with most everything else, were hand cut potatoes. The French dip features homemade roast and an oversized helping of jus. The Scotch eggs take a little longer, but they're worth it. Hard-boiled eggs wrapped in breakfast sausage, coated in Panko and deep fried. If this place was open after the bars closed, you wouldn't be able to get a seat. Can't wait to go back and try the "Belly Bustin' Full English breakfast, complete with bangers, black pudding and Heinz beans! It doesn't get more authentic. read more

Food and service excellent. There were five of us in our group for lunch , first time at restaurant. We had the fried catfish, fish & chips, Philly steak, butterfly shrimp, and braised steak. All the meals were outstanding with the batter on the fried food very tasty. Our server was helpful and talkative and we met the owner chef who ran a pub for years over in England. Prices were reasonable and good size portions. All of us had leftovers except my son who got the Philly steak. We will be back especially to eat more of the that side of the pond menu. read more
