Head to Louisville from Nashville and looked on Yelp for a place to stop for lunch. The Whistle Stop popped up and I'm glad it did! What a great little town. It's right off of I65 as soon as you cross the train tracks. We had the meat loaf, open faced roast beef, fried green tomatoes, and the chocolate meringue pie. It was all amazing and our server was the best. She was attentive and went over the menu and made sure my husband got a sampling of peach pie when I said NO I want a meringue pie :). Me and members of my familia went here for an early dinner (roughly 3:30 p.m.) on Friday, May 2nd. I don't know if it was cause of Derby Weekend or whatever, or we caught them at a good time, but it didn't take long at all for us to get seated (6 adults, 1 toddler, and a baby). For as long as I have lived in the Radcliff/Elizabethtown, Kentucky area (29 years now), I had never been here, or even been to the town of Glendale. I started off by ordering a sweet tea to drink, which was good tea, not overly sweet. Our waitress kept on top of refills as soon as we were low, it was filled right back up with our drinks. We started off ordering 2 orders of their appetizer sampler. The fried green tomatoes and the fried pickles were fantastic, I could have ate those by themselves for a meal; the fried okra was alright too. They had several different items they had on their menu I wanted to try, however, I ended up ordering the pot roast that came with mashed potatoes, and then I chose the broccoli casserole as a side. Members of the familia ordered the outrageous chicken, Texas sized country fried steak, fried chicken, and the meat loaf. Not even kidding, the pot roast itself was awesome. It was so tender, I used my fork to cut it and pull it apart; didn't even need the knife. The mashed potatoes were good too, though the broccoli casserole left a bit to be desired. I traded some of my pot roast with the rest of the familia to try their entrees as well. The sauce made the outrageous chicken good, the meat loaf was really good and had a bit of a sweet glaze to it, and the country fried steak was probably my second favorite of the entrees behind my pot roast. After finishing my meal, I decided to try the peanut butter meringue pie, at the recommendation of a friend. For as highly toted and award-winning as they say their deserts are, I was not overly impressed with it. Maybe it was because I was completely stuffed from the appetizers and my meal, or maybe because I am a peanut butter snob and prefer crunchy to creamy...but that particular pie was just ok. I feel like maybe I should have gotten the chocolate meringue pie or a fruit cobbler in retrospect. All in all, I enjoyed their food and will definitely go back sometime to get another dish. If "homestyle" food means "secret sauces" that covers the entrees entirely and sides out of a can, count me out. The waitress told me verbatim "None of the vegetables are fresh." Run, Vegetarians, run! "Homestyle" in this case means full of fat and kinda cheap. While the portions were good for the price ($36 for two of us), the quality of all but the entrees equaled that of my high school cafeteria. Don't bother with the mashed potatoes, corn pudding, or side salads (an iceberg atrocity with no color to be found). We couldn't tell the quality of our chicken dish, though the bbq sauce tasted fine. I think it might have included mushrooms, but it's hard to tell. Our friend liked her meatloaf, though the most she could describe about it was "interesting". The best things about our meal at The Whistle Stop were 1) the free loaf of thick bread that came before the meal, and 2) the charmingly quaint atmosphere of both the restaurant and the town. The restaurant sits right next to a railroad track. While we ate, a train went by with a whistle and a gentle shaking of the entire structure. It was fun, not scary. At first I thought it might be a sound effect. For #2, don't look too closely at the three+ room giftshop (while a dozen parties waited outside for an hour) because you'll just find generic, ugly crafts ... and a tempting box of to-go fudge, I'll admit. One room mostly contains plastic kids toys. Despite all of this, the combination of eccentric dining mini-rooms and cutesy decorations crowding every available surface made this a fun dinner. As for Glendale, it's tiny but utterly picture-perfect. They have $4-6 carriage rides "tours" ... though we're not sure they tour because all we could see of the town was the three-block segment where the restaurant resides. That part by itself was worth the stop. The houses are small Victorian cottages filled with antique shops and decorative arts. All the Fall and Halloween decorations gave the stretch a Sleepy Hollow feel ... in the best way possible. Finally, a note about the famed Whistle Stop sugar-cream pie: it looks and tastes just like crémé brulée (on a crust with whipped cream). Three of us split one piece and that was enough. Very oily and no flavor, no sugar...just oil an flour. So sad, these were a staple in our house if we had come through the area. Assuming the recipe changed with the new ownership. We came here for a family member's birthday, and the food was great! The fried green tomatoes were excellent (love how thick they were!), and loved the hot brown. Wow! Where do I even begin with this place............................? This is one of the coolest places you will ever go for a bite to eat. The little town is literally out of a movie. So cool! I spent about 30 minutes walking around this little historic town before I even ventured inside this gem they call the Whistle Stop. I was greeted right away and seated. The menu looked so amazing, I wanted to order just about everything on it. Since I was only in the area for work, I had to do my best to make the best choice. Believe me, there are many choices here. I settled on the fried chicken. Now be aware, and they will warn you, that this may take 45 minutes because they literally do not start to cook it until you order it. It was worth the wait since it was the best fried chicken I had ever tasted. I had it with a side of mashed potatoes, homemade mac & cheese, and a loaf of the homemade bread. The menus are usually sticky. Really. IMHO, this place, ten or more years ago, was entirely different. Then, the pork tenderloin and apples was tasty and fresh. It was, honestly, my favorite 'visiting home' meal, something that I insisted upon each time I visited the area. At this point, though, "home-style" has turned into meaning "from a can" or "average, and not particularly well-seasoned." I could never visit again and not miss the food / place. Again, IMHO, they're deserving of a Gordon Ramsay episode reboot., except that since they're usually packed, there's no motivation for improvement, I suppose. Regardless, per another reviewer's comment, this is not the kind of place a vegetarian (or vegan - hahahahahahah!) would ever find something tasty. Just not going to happen in rural KY (not excusing it - just making the observation). If you're ordering to the establishment's strengths, the traditionally "Southern" food items, as available, are better than alternatives. The staff is friendly, and, as busy as they are, they try hard to be efficient. I would never describe their service negatively, on the whole - only their product. The menu has a nice variety but it is a bit overpriced for what you receive . For appetizers , we had the fried green tomatoes ( the breading was too thick and chewy , and a few of the tomatoes were already slightly red) and we had the fried okra ( I prefer my okra to be fried in cornmeal rather than a breading) . I had the catfish dinner, which had a nice thin seasoned cornmeal breading , crispy on the outside, tender on the inside . I had a side of Lima beans , which was small , and had too much sugar cooked with it. I also had a side of fried cornbread, and was disappointing because of how fat and fluffy they were Vs a medium crispy fried cornbread . It might as well had been pancakes due to their texture and size . I tried a bite of my friends fried chicken , and was not impressed . The seasoning was a tad sweet and the coating was not quite like anything I had ever had before , and it was on the soft side. I prefer my chicken to be crispy and non-sweet. The mashed potatoes did not taste real. The desserts are over priced , and I would assume it is because of their famous reputation for pie that they get away with the prices. I will say that their peanut butter pie is one of the best I have ever had, but the price is very debatable if it's worth it or not. We also shared a slice of coconut cake, and the icing was apparently made with sour cream, and it was much too sour for my liking . One bite was more than enough. The price was not worth it, in taste or size, in my opinion. If you must have dessert, stick with a slice of pie. The staff was friendly , but the waitress did drop an open container of tarter sauce in my drink. She said she was sorry , but the drink was not replaced. Granted, they were busy. Will I be back? Drove here from Louisville today with two friends. Arrived at 11:30 for lunch. The place was freezing. When we sat down the chairs were so cold it sent chills straight up our backs. There was a party of 15 in the room with us and they also complained about the cold. We all sat with our coats on and joked that we needed gloves and thermal undies. Most of our food was fine with the exception of the brioche bun for my chicked salad. I had asked for a roll but was told they didn't have any. The top of the brioche bun was fine but the bottom was so hard it was like biting into a crunchy cookie; it was stale. The actual chicken salad and the bean soup were quite tasty but I/we couldn't enjoy the food or visit because we were so cold. Hardly an inviting atmosphere. We were all so cold that it ruined our trip to Glendale. Our feet were frozen. So instead of wandering the town, we got into our car, turned on the heat and left. It was disappointing. read more

We had bison burger with fries and catfish with southern-style Italian green beans plus an order (8 large slices) of fried green tomatoes with horseradish sauce. I was not asked how I wanted my burger cooked, but given that bison is more lean and overcooking would be a bad idea, it was automatically cooked medium, which was perfect. Ok. We stopped here out of nostalgia. We use to stop here with my parents and our young kids when traveling. My mom thinks back fondly on this place. And it is adorable! The service is always friendly and efficient. Devin was great! Nice variety of true Kentucky, country fare on the menu. The fried green tomatoes are big, crunchy, and tasty but the thick batter was greasy. The fried chicken was juicy, pretty flavorful and my baked potato was big and yummy. The side salads were ok but tasted like bagged lettuce. My husband was very disappointed in his dinner. He had the seafood dinner special- fried shrimp and battered cod. The cod had a nice light cornmeal breading. It was really good, just a small portion. The 6 fried shrimp were disappointing. They tasted like they were from a box and mostly breading. Stopped in there on a busy Saturday evening with a group of 6 for dinner. Had to wait 30 minutes but the food here is worth the wait. Started with fried green tomatoes and they were excellent. Not greasy or overlooked. I also had a small dinner salad that was made with fresh leafy greens (no iceberg lettuce!), tomatoes, cheese and potato sticks. I had the hamburger and fries. The burger was perfectly cooked and the fries were crispy and had some seasoning. My friends had chicken fried steak, chicken tenderloin, and meatloaf. Once the food was on the table there was no talking as we were all scarfing down our food. Everything was perfectly cooked and tasty. Service was a bit slow but they were busy so we didn't care. Some of, if not the best, chicken that I've had. I've been to Claudia Sanders and many other locations that specialize in Chicken and the Fried Chicken at the Whistle Stop is excellent. Very small atmosphere, plan on waiting 15-30 minutes when you get here, but it's well worth it! Reasonably priced meal, not cheap, but not expensive, this is a SMALL town with several antique shops through-out and it's nice to have a good restaurant in the middle of a adventure for the day. We started with the Fried Green Tomatoes which were also excellent. My wife had the Country Fried steak, it was fork tender and was an actual pounded steak, not ground beef made into a patty, it was very good as well. We will return for another day trip down to Glendale and when we do, we will eat at the Whistle Stop again! read more

This is a wonderful, my wife's favorite, restaurant located in the small town of Glendale, Ky. In business since 1975 and we'll known throughout the area. We had a special buffet dinner as part of a presentation on investments. They are famous for their "down home" food but especially noteworthy are the fried chicken and variety of pies. Last night I had fried chicken, macaroni and cheese (excellent), carrots, green bean casserole, ham with pineapple ,cole slaw, and home made rolls with chocolate cake for dessert. All were wonderful. They are bumped up right next to a railroad track so as a bonus we got to hear and feel a freight train rolling past complete with whistle. They offer 15% senior discount on Wednesday and 15% military discount on Thursday. For antique hunters there are a couple stores very nearby but they close early. It is a very nice, small restaurant that is pretty romantic. I highly recommend this restaurant. read more

My daughter lived a few miles from here, Its a really cool place in this small town.

Had visited many times/years in past during festivals and since moved down here had visited but it just isn't the same. Liked so much stood in line for an hour or so just get lunch during festival. Breakfast this morning was not good at all. Eggs tasted like out of container, hash brown casserole not cooked through, french toast casserole looked like soggy bread pudding, biscuits were good, gravy tasted like out of bag mix opinion of all in our party. Coffee was warm. Bacon was good sausage was ok. When server asked how everything was we said "It was okay" as did not want to cause and attention to ourselves. Did not taste like home made more like instant breakfast/fast food. We left hungry in search of more food that we found outside along festival. We had visited for dinner months back and were not impressed with our meal then but thought everyone has off time. Fried chicken had so much coating on it. Excessive meringue on pie for our taste just over powered the pie that was good itself. Time before that not impressed but gave more chances but sad to say will not try anymore. The food is good and consistent, in the middle of a pleasant small town close to the interstate (but far enough from it to take your mind off driving.) I've never had a bad lunch here, and the service is fast enough where it doesn't take up too much time. This restaurant has been open since 1975 I believe. My father in law said it opened when he was a sophomore in high school. Thankful they take me when we come back to visit. My in-laws always rave about how they have the best fried chicken and it is amazing. Recently I had the fried catfish which was great! Only complaint is that the side salads were especially small and the fries I got were not crisp at all. They are thick fries and may have taken quite a bit longer to get crisp. Yesterday was my third time to eat at the Whistle Stop, but it definitely won't be my last. Located in the small town of Glendale, off the main road (I-65), The Whistle Stop is a place you plan to go to rather than just driving by and deciding that it looks like a good place to eat. It's worth the drive! When we arrived there were people waiting to be seated (which is perfectly normal for this place). We put our name on the list and we're told it would be "a little over half an hour" for our party of two. Just 9 minutes later we were seated at a table! The menu has a lot of choices, but I always get the meatloaf. I'm not usually a fan of meatloaf and wouldn't order it anywhere else, but the meatloaf here is absolutely delicious! It comes in an individual personal-sized loaf (instead of slices like most restaurants serve it) with a choice of two side dishes. I chose the green beans and corn pudding. Everything was hot and very tasty. Yesterday my husband chose the roast beef. It was the best looking roast beef I've seen served in a restaurant. He chose green beans and a side salad for his two sides. The staff was friendly and attentive; the food is amazing. This is the place for fabulous home cooking in a unique atmosphere. The fried green tomatoes or cheese bites are the best appetizers. You can't go wrong with either choice. If you have time to wait for your meal, the fried chicken is so worth it. The meatloaf, outrageous chicken, and chicken tenders are also some of our favorites. Don't know how this restaurant receives so many 4 & 5 stars. Overpriced & poor quality. When the batter falls off your fried chicken because it's saturated in grease there's a problem. When their hot brown tastes like they just dumped cheese wiz over a slice of white bread with tasteless ham & lunch meat turkey there's a problem. When your roast beef is tough & full of gristle there's a problem. When the meatloaf is tasteless & so dense you could sink a boat there's a problem. We have eaten many meals over the years at Whistle Stop and the new owners continue to dish out bad tasting poor quality high priced food. What a shame. Like any other restaurant, the service depends on your server of course. I have had some that are exceptional and some that are just okay. I can say the same about the food. I give the meatloaf 5 stars (I melted with satisfaction!), but the steamed broccoli I only give 2 stars. There are many dishes with something to please everyone. The restaurant is one of the best authentic, cozy, rustic little dives I have every come accross. The atomostphere fantastic and, even better, it is right in the middle of a small town with it's own great charm (for those familiar with Nashville IN, I called this little town a "mini Brown County"). If you live within an hour of this place, you should certainly give it a shot. I don't think you will be disappointed. I plan to visit again. read more
