Like any other restaurant, the service depends on your server of course. I have had some that are exceptional and some that are just okay. I can say the same about the food. I give the meatloaf 5 stars (I melted with satisfaction!), but the steamed broccoli I only give 2 stars. There are many dishes with something to please everyone. The restaurant is one of the best authentic, cozy, rustic little dives I have every come accross. The atomostphere fantastic and, even better, it is right in the middle of a small town with it's own great charm (for those familiar with Nashville IN, I called this little town a "mini Brown County"). If you live within an hour of this place, you should certainly give it a shot. I don't think you will be disappointed. I plan to visit again. read more

Cute and unique little restaurant! The food was the BEST! The meatloaf melted in your mouth! Fried chicken was so juicy and extra crunchy! We also loved the broccoli casserole. Don't know how this restaurant receives so many 4 & 5 stars. Overpriced & poor quality. When the batter falls off your fried chicken because it's saturated in grease there's a problem. When their hot brown tastes like they just dumped cheese wiz over a slice of white bread with tasteless ham & lunch meat turkey there's a problem. When your roast beef is tough & full of gristle there's a problem. When the meatloaf is tasteless & so dense you could sink a boat there's a problem. We have eaten many meals over the years at Whistle Stop and the new owners continue to dish out bad tasting poor quality high priced food. What a shame. They have taken a well known restaurant and ruining its reputation. read more

We went to Whistle stop, we had heard such good things about it. We waited about 40 minutes, but they told us when we got there and it was ok. We started with fried green tomatoes. They were really tough. My husband had the meatloaf and he said it was pretty good, my daughter got the catfish and it was delish. I ordered the fried chicken. I did not like the spices on the crust and it was very greasy. My side was mashed potatoes and I really liked them. I hope this was just a off night but I dont think we will be back. read more

We found this little piece of heaven on the way back to SW Ohio from a visit to Mammoth Cave. We ordered 3 main courses and shared them all between us. First of all the decor is quaint and a perfect atmosphere and makes you feel like you're back in the old days. We first ordered the Fried Green Tomatoes and they were delish. We ordered the Kentucky Hot Brown and were amazed! The Fried Chicken, Outrageous Chicken, Bread, Fried Corn Bread, Lima Beans, Mashed Potatoes and Corn Chowder were so tasty. Sadly we didn't have room for dessert. Now we have a reason to take 65 South from the Cincy area again in the future :) PS since we shared we just told them to bring out the food as it was cooked. Fabulous little place on the cutest street. It feels like you're going back in time. The food was served quickly and was delicious. For dessert the peanut butter pie was to die for. I have been going here for years and it is truly great. The prices are fair and the portions will leave you with leftovers! The only thing I will say is the salads are quite small, so don't expect a typical "house-salad" sized portion. Other than that, you can't order anything wrong! Went for lunch today and was glad to see the daily special was chicken and dumplings. These were real dough dumplings not noodles. Was torn though as I was dying to try their fried chicken. So friend and I agreed to share plates one got the dumplings and the other the chicken. Sides were fried corn bread beans mashed potatoes and fried ocra. First off if you are sure you want the fried chicken tell the waitress right off the bat since they only cook it once ordered and it takes a while. However it is worth it. Some of the best fried chicken around crispy and very tasty. Just a little too battered but a minor critique. The chicken and dumplings...delicious. great dumplings and the gravy was good. Only critique is it was a little too salty and it could of used a little more chicken to match the gravy. Fried corn bread ......was almost like Johnny cakes very different than expected. . If they served them honey or syrup it would make more sense. Mash potatoes and green beans were satisfactory complimentary to the meal but not special. Fried ocra was decent as well. Decent food, great atmosphere. My boyfriend felt like the burger had kinda fast-food grade meat, and my chicken dish was a little overpowered by the barbeque-like sauce it was covered in. However, neither dishes were inedible, just a little ho-hum. The atmosphere is really nice though. We both loved the feel of the place. Also, when a train goes by the initial force rattles everything a little bit, which is kind of fun without being super loud. It's a good place to go if you need dinner plans on the fly, but if you're looking for AMAZING food, you might want to look elsewhere. read more

However, I only have eaten a bite or so of them because I am too full to eat much of the piece of pie. Service is great. The atmosphere is really nice and quaint. The fried chicken and appetizer sampler platter is awesome. So far the only entree I have tried is the fried chicken and tenderloins, both very good and moist! I've had the Mac n cheese and mashed potatoes and gravy, both tasty but once was oversalted. Husband had the meatloaf and said it was too mixed and weird texture, also way too sweet. I tried three of their desserts and was not impressed whatsoever. Mushy pie crust, fake tasting blackberry cobbler with little crust, and the hummingbird cake was not good. Just live and learn on that I guess. Will keep coming back to try new things! read more

What a cool little town and restaurant. I had my first visit to The Whistle Stop and to Glendale, KY today and I must say I highly enjoyed everything. The first thing you'll notice is how small and quaint this town is. The L&N Railroad runs right next to the restaurant and there's always trains coming through. Inside the restaurant, you can feel the vibration of the train before it even passes by. That was really cool. The place itself is small and there's just about always a wait. On this day, we waited an hour & a half but it was a party of 15 so we expected it. We were told the wait would be worth it. Boy was it. The time went by rather quick thanks to the 6+ antique stores & boutiques that are next door and across the street/tracks. Makes for a very old-timey feeling that you get sacked into. I can't say enough about how neat the whole experience was. I'm from the city so I don't get to see much small town stuff. Totally different way of life. Anyways, back on track (pun intended), once we got seated everything went great. Our server handled our party like a pro. The food here is pretty damn good and the portions they give you are enough for 2 people. I felt like I didn't even put a dent in my entreé but I was so full. I hear they have some of the best pies you can get but I didn't get to try any because I had no room left in my belly. I've got nothing bad to say about this place, it was all great. True southern food that tastes great. Good people, good times. I can't wait to go back, totally worth the 2hr drive. read more

We love, love, love going to the Whistle Stop. A military couple in our 30's, it is nice to find such a charming little town with a great restaurant full of personality and EXCELLENT food! Once you step in you are greeted with smiles and a small gift area to brouse if there is a wait for seating (which has never been long in our experience). The restaurant is right next to railroad tracks, and you will most likely enjoy a train pass while there. I am a big fan of their fried green tomatoes...they're huge! I can also say their country fried steak and meatloaf are super yummy. They also offer a great ribeye, Kentucky hot brown, a great chicken dish smothered with bacon and cheeses, and more. This is also a big favorite of ours because we love their french onion soup...they serve pancakes with it (which are not the sweet style, but a more corn based pancake). After your meal don't forget to order a piece of their homemade pie! My husband loves the coconut cream. read more

Down home cooking at its best. Great quality is immediately evident and I enjoyed every bite. There were three of us and we each had a different entree. The roast beef serving was generous and according to my friend, excellent. My wife had the Hot Brown and liked it but preferred the one she had in Bardstown at the historic Talbot Tavern. I had the meat loaf and it was fantastic. All of the sides were excellent as were the fried green tomatoes which were served with a creamy dip laced with horseradish - excellent. We stopped here on our way back to Nashvillle on a rainy weekday afternoon. We were enticed by their home cooking that we read about from the other reviews. My husband is a food snob, being from the East Coast and we always struggle to find good food, especially while on a road trip. The Whistle Stop was a welcome respite from the usual fare that we find along 65!! It is just a mile or two off the exit and at first you think you have made a mistake getting off in this rural area...but then you enter a very cute little town with antique and gift shops along with the cutest restaurant. The food was great. We had the meatloaf with mashed potatoes and gravy with fried apples and a fried chicken salad. Delicious! The kids ordered chicken tenders, which were as big as chicken breasts. The chicken was all very tender and crisp on the outside. My youngest ordered grilled cheese, which was just basic and not too exciting, but everything else was amazing! Waitress, Shay, was a super sweet southern girl with a never ending pitcher of tasty sweet tea. She was great: very friendly, attentive and patient. We will definitely recommend this place, that has been in business since 1975, to our friends and will be back for some more sweet tea on our next trip north!!! read more

Obviously the "to-go" spot in the area. The wife and I attempted to dine here a couple of months ago, but the wait was over an hour. Today, it was only 5 minutes, but the place was still very busy. The decor is charming, the service is extra friendly, and the wait for the food wasn't long at all. My wife ordered the meatloaf, and I order their fried chicken, and we had an appetizer sampler (fried okra, fried green tomatoes, and fried pickles) to start. The appetizers were great, so the dining experience started well. The wife's meatloaf had a very sweet taste, it was okay, but the disappointment was the mashed potatoes were instant. The green beans were canned (which most homestyle restaurants in the area use), and were very salty (cooked with ham hocks or some other pig part). The loaf of bread that came with the meal was good, but nothing to write about. My fried chicken batter was buttermilk (as advertised), but it was overly thick, and lacked any taste, except for the excessive amount of grease that came with it. The cornbread was a pancake, which I find is common in KY and TN, and was too dry, which is common in KY and TN... The appetizer was 9.99 and my 4 piece chicken plate was 11.99. Plenty of food, a bit high on the price but if you're packed every night, I understand why. It's a good place to try once, but we feel no need to return. Some folks swear by this place - it wasn't bad, but why my neighbor comes once a week I won't understand. read more

My wife have been here several times before. Today we went to lunch late. We noticed new signage on the outside and inside this quaint little nugget of a restaurant in a small railroad town just south of Elizabethtown, KY. It has good old country cooking including such menu items as fried green tomatoes and Kentucky hot brown and many cobblers and pies. I had the the Reuben sandwich with pinto beans. They brought the thousand island spread on the side, which I don't use, but is normally on the sandwich, and came on a marbled rye bread--delicious! My wife had her usual country ham sandwich and bean soup and sweet iced tea. They bring you some sweet pickle relish and a slice of onion to put in the pinto bean soup if you wish, which I always add...my wife doesn't. We also had the blackberry cobbler with a big scoop of their Graeters Ice Cream--scrumptious!. Afterwards, you will enjoy walking through the many antique and novelty shops in downtown Glendale. read more
