The chicken was so juicy, and the chicken was crispy. I usually find that hot chicken sandwiches are covered in a sauce and the chicken loses its crisp. The bun didn't fall apart when picking it up. The sandwich is also not that spicy, it has a great flavor. The vegetables were very fresh, and accented the flavor of the chicken very well. I personally didn't love the chips and prefer fries. One of our local favorites! Don't skip the French Dip, it's outstanding! I would recommend subbing the chips for the fries and getting a side of garlic aioli, you won't be disappointed. I also am obsessed with the crispy brussel sprouts appetizer, and their wings are good, too. So far I've dined in twice, and done takeout twice. Super consistent quality. The only thing I didn't love was one of their mocktails, but not a deal breaker. Service is super friendly even while busy. The restaurant itself is more of a dimly lit place, and a great vibe for a date night or meetup with friends. The heated patio is my personal favorite place to dine. Here's a local eatery that's doing the pandemic right: Limited seating, patio (or igloo!) options, plenty of space between tables, and a staff that masterfully balances the need to stay in business with a priority to prevent the spread. I've been here both before and during the pandemic. Tasty menu and drink specialties, which you can read about in the other reviews. My purpose here is to recognize Winchester's efforts to combat COVID. I've been in and out of several restaurants during the pandemic (sometimes for the one and only time), and variance abounds in observing safety regulations. It's not that these other places aren't doing it. But walking into The Winchester for dinner on Friday felt palpably different. For one, the bar counter itself wasn't jammed with stools (I wish people would police themselves, but they aren't; if you provide a stool, someone will use it). Tables were *actually* (versus placing plexiglas between adjacent booths) and *obviously* distanced. Even the outdoor seating was distanced and comfortably so. I never realized the relief it is not having to guess whether your table is in the danger zone. And of course, staff all wear masks, menus are contactless, and hand sanitizer was widely available. Nobody likes the pandemic. And we're all praying hard to get this thing behind us and to get the businesses roaring again. But to The Winchester and other GR hangouts that are doing it right: Bravo! Omg. The French dip here is unreal I dream about it. The Caesar salad is also delicious & everyone loved their entrees but the French dip won! The service was just so-so, our waitress only came around a few times to take our order and then give us the check. We also ordered the whipped feta dip and it wasn't as we expected - much thicker of a consistency. Yummy!! Went at noon on a Saturday and was seated right away! They had a contact tracing form to fill out and everything was properly social distanced. The entire menu sounded delicious that it made it hard to pick what to get. The weekend brunch menu has a "mimosa bar" for only $3 each (waiter serves it to you due to covid but they have 4 options for juice!) so that was the obvious drink choice. My friend opted for the "bloody mary bar". I decided on the Cuban sandwich and it was huge and so tasty. Super satisfied with my meal. My friend said the pulled pork hash was awesome. let me start by saying... i have never ordered something from the winchester that i did not LOVE. the winchester was the first place i tried in grand rapids before i moved here and when i was looking for a house, i actually set my commute destination as the winchester so that i could find a house within walking distance... and i did :) It is so hard for me to order because i really do have so many favorites. to name a few: the naan club, the shrimp curry, the french dip, the cuban, the naan brekky club...wow. i recommend fries instead of chips and sitting in the covered patio during the winter. watching the snow fall in the dim lit, warm enclosure was something i didn't realize i'd like so much. the drinks are good too. not your basic watermelon mojito or moscow mule but more elevated. i had a cocktail with cardamom once and i liked it way more than i thought i would. last time we went, my boyfriend tried a mystery beer/seltzer special for $2 that they had. i thought it was a neat idea especially for those not picky or don't know what they want. needles to say, i'm planning my next dinner and it will be the new muscles special. read more

We aren't familiar with HH here and our server told us it was HH, but didn't say that what consisted of (it's special prices on beer, house wines and well drinks). The Winchester was able to come up with an extremely creative idea with how to host guests during the COVID-19 shut down by putting up....IGLOOS! They are available by reservation with a $10 fee to reserve. They are so much fun and they do an amazing job of making sure it is clean and sanitary. They hold 6 people maximum and you order "take out" on your phone to the igloo you are located in and they will set the food outside the igloo for you to bring in yourself for contactless service! They also have very limited availability so book AHEAD online... well in advance! The igloos are "heated" but I would still bundle up because the heater only got to 54 degrees while we were in there. Also... to top it off.. they gave us a mini Bluetooth speaker to use during our meal. I ordered the grilled chicken Caesar wrap with the house chips and my husband order the Cuban sandwich with fries. The wrap was okay. I loved that they added cucumbers to the wrap, but the spice they added was too much for me. I would recommend the Cuban sandwich over the wrap. My husband let me have a couple bites and I wish I had more! Overall, this was such a fun experience, especially in the midst of Covid, they make you feel safe when eating there! read more

My girlfriends and I get together every other week or so, and decided on The Winchester this week. They've set up cute plastic igloos outside that can be reserved, so we were excited for the experience. Upon arrival, the igloo was cutely lit with lights! It was pretty chilly inside. It was 36 degrees and breezy outside, and while there was a heater in the igloo, it did very little. The whole ordering process is contactless, which means you scan a QR code, and place your order on your phone. It's pay as you go. We ordered a bottle of wine to begin, and it came out right away. The servers will not open the igloo, and instead leave your drinks/food on a tray outside the igloo, and you have to bring it inside yourself. A little inconvenient, but I'm not sure of a better way to serve. After a few sips of wine (we tried the Masciarelli Montepulciano, which we enjoyed!), we began placing our food order on our phones. It's a pretty straightforward process, but I wish there was a section to leave additional notes. My friend has Celiac's, and wanted her sandwich as is, but without the bread. I wanted to substitute the dressing on my salad for another kind. Neither were options we could select, and there wasn't a place to mention this. Fortunately, we were able to talk to our server, and she made the notes after we placed out order. Our food came out quickly, and was again left on a tray outside the igloo. We were a little bummed to see everything packaged in to-go containers. The amount of waste from all of the packaging is disheartening, but it also makes a dine-in dinner feel cheaper. The presentation of our plates was lackluster thanks to the boxes. It seems they could still bring your food in bowls/plates. All of our meals were very good! I ordered the WARM GRAIN SALAD and a cup of the CURRY CARROT BISQUE. Both were delicious, although I'm glad I didn't order a bowl of the bisque because it was very rich. My friends ordered the CUBAN SANDWICH and the RAMEN BOWL. We all finished our meals, so safe to say, we enjoyed them! We're grateful they are trying to stay open, and happy to support our local businesses. The only downside to our experience was the fact that we had to wear our coats and hats the entire meal. I've dined in several other igloos that are very toasty, so I know it can be done! I think this needs to be improved, if they hope to maintain igloo dining through the winter. - The bottom of the igloo needs to be sealed better so heat isn't escaping. - Investing in a better heater would be worth their while. It was set on 90 degrees with the high heat setting, and it never warmed past 53 degrees. Also, some music outdoors would really help with the ambiance! We will be going back, but next time we plan to sit on their outdoor patio equipped with industrial heaters. read more

The Winnie has always been a fav spot of ours, even pre covid. We are thrilled they have taken some major steps to stay open through covid closings creating new options for outdoor seating. They have a heated patio as well as those hard to come by domes for reserving ahead of time. We were able to make reservations a few weeks ago before the word was out - I think it might be slightly more difficult to find availability now that people know - and good for them for staying busy! I've been for lunch and dinner and haven't experienced anything to make me want to stop enjoying this place. On this particular visit, we came for lunch and reveled in the five-dollar Bloody Mary bar and a couple select items from off the menu. One item that stood out from all the rest was what I ordered, the fish and chips. Winchester chefs take a whole sea bass and flash fry it to perfection. Yes, the head and all. It comes on a metal tray with yucca fries and Latin slaw. Also gets an accompaniment of chipotle caper aioli for the fries and a tasty lime cilantro dip for the fish. This fish dish can compete with the best of fish fries anywhere. I was floored and must come back to eat this again! All around Winchester is always a solid go to spot for food! Came here on a beautiful Sunday afternoon for some brunch. Upon entering, we were greeted by the host stand and seated immediately. The interior of The Winchester is dimly lit but has a great ambiance to it. Our host brought us to the outdoor seating portion of the restaurant (pictured below). My boyfriend order the ginger pear margarita and said it was good but tasted like a standard margarita. We waited for a fair amount of time before our food arrived but it was worth it because it came out hot and tasty. I ordered the Eggs Benedict with a side of potatoes. I've never had an eggs benedict but I was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed it a lot. The potatoes were hot and crispy. My boyfriend order the short rib hash and enjoyed it. I did take a bite of it and the short rib definitely stood out as it had a lot of flavor. His hash bowl came with a side of potatoes as well. We also ordered the fried donut balls which came with grapes and cantaloupe. The donuts had a nice fried crunch but were slightly dry on the inside so it was nice to dip it in the sauces provided on the side. Overall The Winchester was a great place for brunch and the outdoor seating was nice but I'm one to prefer indoor seating. I would most definitely recommend eating here.
