Everything was perfect. A blast from the past, with everything expected in an old dining car.

It's always fun to have a good meal at diners and Windsor Diner didn't disappoint! The quaint and laidback atmosphere and menu were all my husband and I needed after a long walk in the summer heat. The root beer float caught our attention and we enjoyed it so much and was not concerned our meals have not arrived yet. The Tuna Melt on Rye was moist and the rye bread toasted to perfection. The Haddock Bed was another good choice. The service was very friendly. Lucky for those who will move into the condo being built next to this unpretentious diner! read more

My favorite retro diner in all of Vermont. Not the place to go if you're looking for a fancy meal, this is the type of place where locals eat and the waitress calls you "hun". The fact that it's built in an old train car/trailer adds to the retro aesthetic. read more

Had a fantastic experience eating in this historic Worcester Lunch Car No. 835 - one of the last ones to be made!! The diner is clean, food is delicious, and staff warm up quick and are fun to chat to!! But the homemade pie - omg the pie!! I had a huge piece of their cherry pie and it was TO. DIE. FOR!!! Passed by on my way to another town but the sign outside is what caught my eye saying "SUPPORT LOCAL" so you know I had to turn around!! And it was time to eat anyway. I went the whole nine yards for my experience and sat at the counter, bantering with the staff while watching them prepare food - was such a fun lunch!! I ordered their Fish Sandwich lunch special and a cup of chowda- all excellent! The bread on the sandwich was soft and so flavorful with a decent piece of fried fish - perfect ratio of breading to fish. That cherry pie was incredible - homemade with a soft, flaky crust - and the cherry filling was silky and had a perfect tart sweetness!! Topped with some whip cream - it was heaven! Took me 2 days to eat it all lol! The dining car is very cozy and retro fun! There is counter seating as well as booths. And the counter seating overlooks the grill and kitchen so you have built in entertainment! Parking is street parking in a charming little town - great for walking off your food. I had two scrambled eggs w/homemade cornbeef hash, a side of home fries, a hot tea and some good conversation all for less than $13.00. Cheap at twice the price. If you are here and looking for a good diner to eat in I would highly recommend you stop in. Thursday night they have all you can eat fried fish for dinner Ok so it is Thursday night and I'm here for the fish fry. OMG!! Not very welcoming staff. I don't even know where to begin with the food. The coffee was good. The orange juice was watered down. The eggs Benedict came swimming in hollandaise sauce and the smallest Canadian bacon we've ever seen. The omelette I had was OK, although could've used a little more cheese. The corned beef hash looked like a haystack and I did not try it but my friend who ordered it said it was terrible and he didn't finish it. My other friends bacon looked like it had been rolled and bacon grease after it came off the grill. Two of our friends sat at the counter and watched the cook touch every menu item with bare hands and no hand washing! The fried dough was by far the worst I've ever had. We were so excited to come across a good old fashion diner but this place was a big disappointment and we definitely won't go back. read more

WE finally returned to "The Windsor Diner" formally "Dan's Windsor Diner". Dan is now gone but the bad food remains. We stopped in on Black Friday morning and sat at the counter. Ordered the "Hillbilly Benedict" which was 2 sausage patties on rye w/ 2 poached eggs. What I got was all pre-made. The only thing fresh was the eggs. The sausage was precooked, the hollendaise was as well and tasted off. The home fries were terrible. Partner got blueberry pancakes. Those too were really bad t hat he did not eat even half. He said that they tasted like paste and the blueberries had soured or turned. Also the place is dirty. It needs a good scrubbing. Much of the stainless steel has dirty greasy hand marks. I knew we should have continued on to Stella's in Hartland. read more

Stopped in here this morning. I love the classic old school diner feel. This place was from 1952, and it lived up to it. We sat at the bar area, the waitress was friendly and we got to watch the other employee cook the food. It was 2 woman show. But they did amazing. I went with the eggs Benedict. I never really ordered it before so had to try it here. It was delicious, the home fries were really good too with some ketchup. Definitely stop by if you wanna have some breakfast. read more

Wow. Want to way to waste $36? Come here. 3.3 stars for the food and service is even a stretch. Where do I begin. Let's start with the server whom we overheard talking about her long tenure as a server. She had the interpersonal skills of a cornered badger. Like not a smile, not a modicum of friendliness. Nada. Moving on. I ordered a cup of the "famous" clam chowder and a fish sandwich special. Instead of bringing the chowder to me as I wait for my sandwich she brings it all at the same time! Even when I asked for it ahead of time when it became apparent didn't understand wait service at all. The "famous" chowder was white glue lacking in flavor and clams and was not hot. Sent back to get warmed further and even hot it sucked. The fish sandwich was equally bland, small in portion size for its cost and equally disappointing. The hand cut fries were terrible because they were cooked in a single fry instead of being blanched first. I know what single fry fries look like. When you eat them they're not crisp enough and insides were only partially cooked. My bride ordered corn chowder that was overpowered with bell peppers which for her made it unacceptable. Maybe you love bell peppers. If so this cups for you. Her grilled cheese sandwich was supposed to have cheddar cheese as ordered but was some stringy mozzarella type cheese, another disappointing dish. We had traveled to Hartland to eat at the Hartland Diner and they were closed because the owner went to NY so we tried Windsor. It's a mystery to understand how this place remains open since 1952. read more

Excellent food, but the most rude waitress we have ever encountered. I hope no out of state visitors came here to eat as it is a terrible introduction to our state where most people are respectful and polite. To top it all off, she charged us nearly double what she should have charged. We didn't complain because we were so anxious to leave without any more abuse. read more

The Windsor Diner is what you'd expect from a traditional diner. The service is fast and friendly. The atmosphere is very traditional. I believe the diner car was built in the 1950s. The portion size is very good. It's always nice to be able to watch your food be cooked in front of you. Always ask if they have their homemade bread when you're they're. It's delicious. I've been here several times and I will continue to go as long as I live in the area. Don't forget to take your coffee to go. read more

This place is 100% authentic, the real deal as far as a homegrown diner goes. The ambience is 5 stars: a 1950's vintage original diner. There's nothing gentrified here. The fried fish platter is as good as you'll get anywhere- fresh fish, perfectly fried. Yummy coleslaw. I need to go back for the desserts. It's a wonderfully quirky place with liver and onions and tripe on the menu - go figure. Service is friendly and brisk, solid coffee. Not to be missed Vermont experience. read more

I love this diner! It has become a home away from home visiting my mom at the nearby Mtn. ASCUTNEY Rehabilitation center. The food is classic and tasty. With many fresh homemade and local option! You certainly can't beat the prices either! The waitresses are so incredibly fun, lighthearted, funny and helpful which makes having one of my meals here daily these past few weeks a true uplifting joy. The town of Windsor has free WI-FI and great cell service so this comforting colorful warm friendly place has become my temporary east coast office landing pad! read more

This is a very special place. Vintage rail car, with additional seating in the back as well as large booths. Staff is funny and friendly. Food is great and when it has been underwhelming I let Theresa know and she was happy to fix it. She goes above and beyond for me and others in the community. The staff is friendly and appreciative. They have a great sense of humor as well. Bathrooms are always clean as well as the restaurant as a whole. Big plates, heaping with food, and a laughing good time worth five stars to me. This is an experience. A small town diner with friendly faces you know. If you're looking for a more fancy pretentious place, this isn't for you. Just good comfort food and witty servers. read more

We just finished lunch at this diner. It was possibly the worst meal I have had in years. I ordered an ice tea and the Mac and cheese which is a fixture on the menu. The waitress was curt and gave us no eye contact. The ice tea was tepid and barely tasted of tea. The rolls were so stale they were inedible. The Mac and cheese looked like it had been scraped from the bottom of the pan- dry, congealed, and horrible. Even with liberal salt and pepper I couldn't get it down. Ok, so I really don't understand the negative reviews. All I can say is that if you look at the negative reviews most if not all are from many many years ago. Right now, the lady who owns this place and makes her own amazing bread is a star. They have a great vibe. Friendly, welcoming, small town feel with great breakfast foods and a great atmosphere. My wife and I came twice in a row. There's not much to see or do in Windsor, VT I'm afraid, but we would actually come back to town just to stop here for some eggs and that amazing bread. This place fails me everytime Im dragged here due to lack of food options. Last time I ordered waffles, because "there was no hollindaise in the freezer" (okayyy :/) for eggs benedict and apparently that was too hard to actually whip up, they literally tasted like cardboard, told the waitress they were unedible and still was charged for them. I don't know who Dan is, but this is just the Windsor Diner now. I stopped in late on a Sunday (they close at 8) and was immediately greeted by the waitress (I'm assuming a husband/wife team, possibly brother/sister or other relationship?). She didn't look up or smile right away, but I'm from NJ, where surly is acceptable as long as she's attentive. She did warm up later and was very attentive, so I'm not subtracting points. The clientele is mostly locals/regulars with the occasional tourist or traveler. It's not on I-91, so you have to get off at US 5 (NB Exit 8, SB Exit 9) and drive through Windsor. It's easy to miss the place, and even easier to misjudge it, as the restaurant is inside a tiny train car. Only a handful of dishes are up on the menu board, giving the impression that it's a cheap fried food joint, but no, no, far from it. I'm glad I didn't read the Yelp reviews first, because I wouldn't have dared stop by if I had. Now, I had dinner, so I can't speak to the breakfast, but it was all freshly made. I had the cabbage rolls (a special), and they were loaded with meat, and drowned in a meaty sauce. I got homemade mashed potatoes with plenty of gravy (yay), and a nice big dinner roll to sop up the sauce and gravy (more yay). I got incredibly more food with dinner than the price I paid. I also had the special soup, which was similar in makeup to the cabbage rolls (I must have had a hamburger and tomato craving) and actually seemed more like chili than soup - and they also have a chili. Fortunately, it was delicious, for the lack of liquid consistency. After that positive experience, I elected to continue with desert, and ordered the rhubarb crisp. At the waitress's suggestion, I made it warm and a la mode. This was the correct choice. I can tell the crisp is homemade (it is part of their Friday/Saturday buffet, so it must be a standard), and if there was less crust than I might have preferred, there was a ton of rhubarb, and this is the first time I have enjoyed eating rhubarb. All in all, I would absolutely come back here in a heartbeat, and write more positive reviews, and shake my head at all you naysayers. I want to come for the buffet, which is $10 for all I can eat of their best dishes. I told them I'll be back, and I mean it. read more

We live about 5 minutes from the Windsor Diner, so we frequent it at least once a month, sometimes more. The staff is great and knows our regular order. I almost always get a veggie omelet, fiancée gets hash and cheese. They're pretty big portions, giant omelet, good helping of home-fries, and their home-made bread is delish! (You have to ask for it and it's an up-charge, but if you like your carbs, it's worth it). It's not the fanciest place in the world, but it's an old-style diner - what do you expect? Sure there are fancier places around, but the food here is great, the prices low, and the locals are always entertaining :) read more

Driving into town with hunger rumbling in our bellies, we were looking for a place to eat on a lazy Sunday afternoon. Since we'd been disappointed by our last VT diner, we thought we would give Dan's a try. The dining car showed years of use but is in fairly good shape. A fine example of a Worcester car, with lots of chrome. It was fairly quiet, so we got a lot of attention form the staff. I ordered a chicken club with fries. The fries were greasey, but house made. The club was done perfectly. My partner had a grilled cheese sandwich, a perennial winner to his palate. He very much enjoyed Dan's version. We both liked their cole slaw..fresh, house made, and not sweet or creamy. The best part of the meal...ample bread pudding! The custard was rich and eggy and the sweet taste of maple was prominent throughout the dish. YUMMMY! We enjoyed the staff and meal...sorry you had such a lousy expereince there, Matthew! Decent food served quickly, very friendly service. The blueberry pancakes and the Windsor breakfast muffin are particularly good.

I ate at home so I can't really say much but when my husband picked up the food one of the lady's was kinda rude to him and when we came home to eat we thought that the home fries were good and my omelette was okay but the pancakes really need work like they were shaped good but didn't taste right but maybe we will try again and see how it goes next time? read more

The attendant at St. Gaudens in Cornish NH told us about this spot....she'd never eaten here, but being a sucker for dumpy looking diners I had to try and guess what? A Score! No, there was no waitress named Pearl, Flo or Alice, but "wise cracking" Shelly was the best. Partner had chicken salad sandwich and I had BLT Bothe very good, big chunks of chicken.... both served with chips, pickle and some "sweet talk" by Shelley. I've been going to the Windsor Diner for 25 years anyway. This place goes through cycles. Quality and quantity cycles. My last trip here was last Saturday, for lunch. As usual, they had some satisfying sounding specials on the board like a Haddock dinner, and the (always a favorite) fried belly clams! I was a bit apprehensive about getting the clams because they were priced at $27.00! I had images of fresh fat belly clams piled on my plate. A little Tabasco, a little ketchup. Some nice tartar sauce and a cup of Cole Slaw. Not to forget the hand cut French Fries. My mouth was watering while my brain was in my private Clam Heaven. I got a big old iced tea and sat with my friend in anticipation of what was about to grace my table. My luck has always been pretty good here. Breakfasts mostly, and a few good lunches. This time was to be different. Our lunches arrived. We both ordered the same meal, and we both had the same reaction. You've GOT to be kidding.................Right? ( they weren't kidding) Before us sat our lunches in those little plastic burger baskets lined with paper. It was one potato's worth of soft hand cut fries, and 10 or 12 cute little tiny starving belly clams. I stared at my basket for a few minutes before I ate my first fry. It was soft, and lukewarm. The clams were hidden amongst the fries. $27.00 ?! There weren't enough clams even to make a light weight clam roll. It was a $20.00 potato, and $7.00 worth of clams. What a disappointment. Even after they made a slight adjustment to our tab, I'm going to have to hear some consistently fabulous news about this place before I ever re-enter it. I should have gone to the Crossroads in White River. Or a tiny bit further away and hit the 4 Aces Diner in West Lebanon. Sorry Windsor, this was a push a little too far. Waitress was rude. I specified how I wanted my burger cooked and explicitly stated I didn't want roll roasted. Roll was toasted, burger rare. Cheese was a cheap thin piece of fake wrapper cheese. ive lived in windsor my whole life, and nothing says welcome to windsor like a iconic dinner. i used to go their a lot, the staff always found a way to make me laugh. however, over time the food quality plumited to what i could translate was undercooked and ranchid. i ordered a burger, it looked so good. but when i bit into it, it tasted like it was sour. their was deffinitly a bad after taste. i will admit though its been years since i went their and i dont know if they improved since then. i hope they did, i dont want them to close down. read more

I love diners, especially in Vermont. Very hungry after a night of cold windy camping so our standards weren't too high. We both left agreeing this was, perhaps, the worst diner experience either of us had ever had. We didn't care for the unwelcoming waitress and cook but the 'attitude' may be part of the shtick. Pancakes were from a lousy recipe and completely uncooked in the center, bacon tasted 'off' like it was leftover and not stored properly, eggs were OK but undercooked. Coffee was watery and bland but I don't fault them for that; seems to be a common oversight. Beautiful old diner that is begging for new management. read more
