Ordered hot dog everything - missing tomato no pickle slice?!?
    Joel M.

Really disappointed. Signage outside looked okay but when I pulled up around lunch time on a Sunday I should have read the tea leaves and left since there weren't any cars. The locals must know. Had a hot dog with everything and a burger with everything. Hot dog didn't have any tomato and no pickle and didn't have much flavor. Burger was just an over cooked skinny thing and the onions on it were oily beyond. The worst part, fried were clumps cooked together. Inside is run down and needs a little TLC to look cleaner. I won't try again.

This place is always great. I've been coming for 15 years and it has never let me down. Eddie and Tom are legends!

Best beef sandwich I have had in a long time and fresh made fries. Fast service and friendly workers Gyros very good and not over priced.

Typical fast food joint that will satisfy your urge for greasy and fried goodness. Nothing spectacular but not too bad. I really liked their fries as it was crispy and flavorful. I also had the fish sandwich that was alright, and their chili was ok except for the fact that I think they used nacho cheese in it instead of shredded cheddar cheese? There are lots of tables inside to sit and dine in. Don't expect anything fancy - this is your standard ma and pop restaurant. There are a couple TV's there for you sports fans. There is also this little area that has about 5 video poker machines on it that you can play for money. There is a sign that says "21 years and over only" but it's printed out on your standard 8.5x11 printer paper so curious kids can easily bypass it. If I was in the area again and have a craving for fast food but not the fast food chains, then yes I'll come back. But I wouldn't make a special trip just to come here.

Good amount of food for the price (~$24). Good amount of seating, too. Beef sandwich had thinner bread compared to others. Staff was friendly/helpful.

In driving down North Avenue on more than a few few occasions I've driven by the Winking Dog Restaurant and said "man, I need to stop here sometime". Well that day finally came and I decided to try the hot dog. Before I go over the food there's a few interesting things about the restaurant itself. First off I love the look of the place, it has a very unique old feel to it. There's a board where you can order from out at the edge of the parking lot rather than a normal drive-thru on the side of the building and the inside seems small but actually goes back quite a ways. It's definitely different than you would initially expect from looking at the building from the outside. The hot dog served by Winking Dog is served depression dog style. The hot dog I received came wrapped with fresh cut fries on a soft non-poppy seed bun. The way the dog was assembled was a bit sloppy after opening it up the condiments were applied all throughout the bun but the hot dog was wedged over to one side so that when I picked it up quite a bit of mustard and relish spilled on to my shirt. The dog was as mentioned earlier served depression dog style. So no pickle, celery salt or tomato. There wasn't too much mustard, relish or onion and the sport peppers applied gave it a nice flavor. Overall this hot dog tasted fine, but wasn't exactly assembled perfectly. The fresh cut fries included had a nice flavor and were better than most fresh cut fries I've had. I'd say this place is average overall and give it three stars.

Decent burger and okay dogs. The interior could use a deep cleaning, but as far as the food? It was an okay burger and better than your typical chain restaurants but not comparable to a true burger joint, like Paradise Pup. The fries are crispier than some places which was nice, but the fries tasted like it was fried in old oil. I'm in the middle on this one.

Alright, so I was on North Ave with the boyfriend and we were like lets get Gene and Judes.. and then I was like wait! I read a review for Winking Dogs to have similar hot dogs. Having lived in the area for 24 years almost, not sure why I have never tried the place, but yesterday I finally did! (Thank you Yelp!) So I ordered a hot dog with fries and a chicken and rice soup. The hot dogs is made EXACTLY like Gene and Jude's (Vienna hot dog, mustard, relish, onions, and sport peppers-on a steamed bun) and then topped with a pile of fries. I must say the only reason it didn't taste just like G&J is because its not soaked in the grease of the soggy fries! Which lets me honest here.. that is why they are so addictive (SICK AS IT SOUNDS).. all that grease when your hung over or drunk... is exactly what your body is crying for.. and it adds that "unique flavor." So for me the hotdogs are a perfect alternative.. but here is the real kicker.. THE FRIES are actually crunch and not all soggy like G&J. So for me the hot dog meal was a WIN.. and its only like $2.50 For the chicken rice soup... I wouldn't order it again.. it was meh at most. The boyfriend ordered the same sandwich he ordered most places.. A combo with both hot and sweet peppers. Which he enjoyed. Helpful Tips: - There is a drive through.. and yes that old box thing does still work! -The prices are very affordable and they have daily specials. -You are going to get what you get with these types of places. They are not find dining! Its hot dog joint food!

Ribeye steak sandwich around $4.20. Not that great though in taste
    Jen J.

I had the steak sandwich, which was fairly cheap at less than $5, the deep-fried mushrooms, and pizza puff. I wouldn't recommend the steak sandwich. I took one bite and was disappointed, did not finish it. Didn't like the tasteless bread and the bland, tough steak. The deep-fried mushrooms were pretty good though, a variety of large and small mushrooms that were served fresh and piping hot, the juices almost scalding haha. But then again, I haven't had a bad experience yet ordering deep-fried mushrooms in my eating history ;} This is the 2nd Iltaco pizza puff that I've tried. I first found out about the Iltaco pizza puffs from the food site seriouseats. It looked appetizing with a golden deep-fried shell that was similar to toaster strudels, but a tad crispier. The first few bites were good, but I wasn't impressed. Lito's Empanadas does the fried dough filled with goodness better.

So I had to find a new Italian deli in the area and this place had an authentic Italian sub on the menu with prosciutto, Genoa salami, capicola, provolone cheese, Italian dressing, lettuce and tomato that I added raw onions, hot giardiniera and mayo. It's a deli/mini mart/gambling machine/cafe with friendly service. The meats were skimpy was my first thought, see my pictures. My first thought after taking the first bite was WOW this Italian hoagie bread was perfect/fresh with that great chew/pull. Even with the skimpy meat the whole combination with me tweaking the sandwich was so fu#king delicious I got a second one to take back to WI for dinner. The area probably has a better Italian deli the residents will tell you but I'm in town once a year so next year I will try another Italian deli until I find one to start a new tradition like my old friend for many years that is no more. My final thought is that the price point is similar to the chain sub restaurants with a high quality sub sandwich and why anyone in the area that goes to a chain with this gem is beyond me because they do an authentic Italian sub very well.

You place your order on the tablet, there is just one guy working in there who makes the food and places it on the counter. The decor is simple and just right. The food is the best food ever! I had the rice paper wrap with tofu in it. I could only eat half as I was so full. The seasoning on the fries is so good.. and the cucumber salad was top notch. Even the drinks in the cooker area were very interesting that I had never seen before. It's very clear that this is a very well thought out restaurant. The only feedback I would give is to add a couple of options for vegan gluten free in the menu. My wrap had to be customized and communicating with the chef was a bit of a challenge due to language.

Zenwich - Tasty Food, Lacking Warmth…read more My family and I recently visited Zenwich and tried a little bit of everything--two sandwiches and two rice bowls. Let's start with the good: the sandwiches were delicious, with standout bread that really elevated the meal. While I wouldn't go out of my way to make a special trip just for them, they were definitely enjoyable and well-executed. The rice bowls earned a solid 7.5 from my husband and son. Flavorful and filling, but maybe missing that little extra something to make them truly memorable. Where Zenwich unfortunately fell flat was the customer service. We visited around 5 PM on a Friday and there was only one person working. Not only were we not greeted when we walked in, but we stood at the counter for several minutes without even being acknowledged. I even saw another customer politely thank the staff member after asking for a napkin, and he didn't so much as look up in response. It left the whole experience feeling impersonal. If the service matched the quality of the food, this would've easily been a four-star visit. With just a bit more effort in the hospitality department, Zenwich could really shine.

The rainbow rolls consisted of plain, uncooked vegetables wrapped in rice paper, accompanied by peanut sauce as well as a vinegar dip. There was absolutely no taste to the rainbow rolls, and the peanut sauce tasted like peanut butter that had been microwaved for twenty seconds. The vinegar dip was the only thing that salvaged the rolls. The teriyaki did not come as advertised. There were chunks of glazed soy in brown rice - no other veggies in the bowl itself. There was a side salad that I dumped into the bowl to add some crunch and texture. The glazed soy was tasty but the rice was remarkably bland and mushy. This regime of blandness continued with the Burmese noodle salad: some of the flavours had potential and the dish might have been tastier if those flavours were accentuated, but instead it was a bowl of noodles and assorted vegetables with no compelling taste or texture. The cheesecake was both too sweet and remarkably bitter at the same time. It was fine texturally but the sweetness was overwhelming. The layer of tea on top of the cheesecake added some bitterness. The two flavours were totally incongruous. I have never wasted dessert before - if I can't finish it I take it home, but this dessert was so inedible that even at nine dollars it was not worth salvaging. Service was fine and the food came out quickly. The location of the restaurant in downtown Oak Park was nice - there was some sort of music festival going on outside that made an otherwise aggressively mediocre meal more bearable. Overall, I do not recommend this establishment.

At first, I was disappointed they didn't have Chicago Italian beef. So I asked what they would recommend, and the very polite lady behind the counter said, "You should try my meatball sub." I laughed and told her, "I don't know... my late grandma (100% Italian) made the best meatballs ever, but alright, let's do it." Then she asked, "Do you want peppers?" and of course my reply was, "Heck yeah!" She chuckled. When the sub came out, I have to say, it was huge. I sat down, took one quick smell and a bite... BOOM. I was instantly transported back to my grandma's kitchen, eating Saturday pasta and meatballs. I highly recommend checking this little gem out. Quality was good it's not as greasy or thick as Manny's corned beef which you'll have a food coma if you ate a whole corned beef or pastrami sandwich over there here the way they make their sandwich is similar to Jason's deli if anybody remembers Jason's deli. Jason's deli was not bad but it wasn't greasy if you're the type that likes greasy salty corned beef if it's done right like Manny's then that's what you should go otherwise if you don't like that feel this might not be a restaurant or cafeteria to eat at. The corned beef in regards to quality their Mile high corned beef was light and delicious it's fresh too just like Manny's but not greasy and heavy. I have seen this on Facebook as well and they're Italian versus being a kosher Jewish and they've been around too but not as old as Manny's since they've been around since 1960 whereas Manny's has been around since 1942 and is as old as my parents. Ambience was very casual and friendly it was my first time I had a dress to the cashier it's not really a cafeteria style but you can still sit down and eat I would most likely come back also because of the prices since Manny's tends to be expensive for their sandwiches. This was expensive too but then again I ordered a chili and a tiramisu I was going to get a potato salad just to find out they had soups. If you're around Franklin Park in like Mom and Pop delis this is another good option and don't want to drive to Chicago for Manny's and an alternative to Jason's deli in oakbrook or in Chicago surprise I did not know the other Jason's deli at the four stars. Being an Italian deli it's going to be a bit more limited to certain kosher dishes so don't expect to have knish or matzo ball soup but they will have chicken noodle soup.
