The people are really sweet at this neighborhood hot dog joint. They get 5 stars. The food is a bit meh. The fries were okay, as was the dog. But the burgers we had were a bit dry and unseasoned. If they are fresh, I'd be surprised. They seemed like frozen burgers. It was fun to sit outside to eat watching families and traffic. This was on my bucket list to try as it's nearby my home. Ample parking available with small inside for seating and sidewalk seating. I have had better Chicago dogs as this one they gave it a large dose of celery salt. The French fries and strawberry shake was spot on. Staff was ok. Yum! We had been to Chicago just this past July and we're headed back from Wisconsin when we were driving though. I of course was craving a Chicago style hot dog so we found a place and stopped. I loved the vibe, it had the small hole in the wall feel and in a great area. Big parking lot on the side (we had our van so that was so nice). There were outdoor seats and it was a decent size for it being a little hot dog shop. We walked up to the counter and ordered them sat down. Our food was up in no time flat and called out from a window on the other side of the shop. Loved that! Like I said, has an old time feel a bit. My Chicago style hot dog was delicious! Nothing to over powering which I find sometimes. My husband got a chilly dog and wasn't a huge fan of the cheese but he's just weird about nacho cheese so if he would have known he would have ordered something different. His was okay. I was recently at Southtown hotdogs and the cashier ( Don't remember her name but she was nothing but rude). She was being rude to my son and his friends with no remorse. But things just got worse. My son gave her a two 20s and a 10 dollar bill, and she only charged him for 40. Her own naivety caused a little argument with her. Reluctantly she gave him the 10 back. Southtown Hot Dogs is a tiny little eatery located right at the intersection of Vallette and York Road in Elmhurst. There is an attached parking lot with a fair number of parking spaces and a handful of tables inside. In stopping by Southtown I decided it would be a wise decision to try out the hot dog. I placed my order and within a few minutes a hot dog and fries was ready. The hot dog here came on a classic Chicago style poppy seed bun. The bun was soft, no signs of dryness and was prepared well. The pickle slice used here wasn't too thick, too thin or too sour. The tomato slices were a bit on the thick and sloppy side. There was a tad too much celery salt applied to this hot dog, the sport peppers were good with just the right amount of spicy to add to the dog. The mustard, onion and relish were all well applied and the skinless sausage on the dog was well heated and tasted. Overall this was a solid example of a Chicago style hot dog. Also included with the dog were long shoestring style fries, these were very good fries as well. They were a little on the salty side but had a nice amount of flavor, were crisp enough to get a good bite out of and had a tasty potato paste. Overall these were well above average fries. I left Southtown Express being quite impressed and would say they are well above average for a Chicago style hot dog stand. I am going to give them four stars. Not bad, not great. Decent Chicago dogs and fries. I personally enjoyed the thin cut fries (similar to McDonalds) but think they should have been seasoned more. I also ordered the Italian beef combo and thought it was pretty tasty. I the beef didn't have much flavor but I liked the sausage. Plus, you can't go wrong adding giardiniera to anything. read more

I really want to give Southtown Hot Dogs four stars, but I can't. It's not because I don't like their hot dogs, they're good and a good value. I'm just not a fan of their french fries. They look like McDonald's fries, but aren't as good as McDonald's. Also, there's something really funky about the ketchup they use. I don't think it's Heinz. It tastes very vinegary (if that's a word). The place is always busy and it's a good stop, but if they improve the fries, it would be a great stop and worthy of four stars. Great find in Elmhurst. I was passing through the area after visiting a local Motorcycle dealership and found Southtown Hotdogs. I must have just missed the lunch time rush because I had the place to myself. Neat little shop that is CLEAN! Almost too clean for a hot dog joint! Lol. I order a Chicago style ( minus relish and onions of course ) and some Mozzarella sticks ( Wisconsin proud! ). The dog was a nice Red Hot Chicago brand and tasted delicious. Hot dog and fries was $3.54. That's a great deal! If I have a knock with the hot dog it was that the bun was just slightly dry. It could have stayed in the steamer a touch longer... But otherwise it was great. The sticks weren't homemade, but still good and the marinara sauce had a good flavor too. SouthTown HotDogs is A-Ok in my world. They've got decent seating inside and 4 tables outside on the sidewalk too. I'd come back for more! read more

When I used to work in Elmhurst this was my favorite spot to visit for lunch. I would normally order the grilled chicken breast, a side salad, and the curly fries. The salad isn't fancy and consists of romaine lettuce, sliced tomatoes, sliced white onions, with pickles and a side of dressing. Now I never had pickles in my salad, but it wasn't bad and for a side salad it was a very generous portion. The chicken breast is juicy and delicious and again a good portion. The curly fries are seasoned perfectly and more than enough to share. The staff here are really friendly and do a great job getting your food to you fast and perfectly made. Now pre-covid, in the summer, there's a usually a long line of kids getting their ice creams. I'd always call my order in beforehand to avoid a longer wait, unfortunately, I never had the time to wait in the line for the ice cream but it must be really good. read more

I'm so happy I came across this little hot dog stand! I ordered a hot dog with everything and fries. Both were delicious! The fries were absolutely outstanding! The hot dog and fries were so good that I decided to try a plain cheeseburger. It was great too! The large hamburger patty was high-quality and served on a sesame seed bun. What a great little place in south Elmhurst! We were out house hunting and needed an inexpensive and quick bite -- hot dogs always fit the bill and Southtown seemed like a good place to try. It's smallish but has a handful of booths and a counter, bright red and yellow with a chalk menu (and more menus above the counter and kitchen areas). Hot dogs, sausage, Italian beef, burgers, soup, the usual assortment of fried things (potatoes, cheese, onions) and ice cream. Yum. Friendly, chatty guys working who dealt with the influx of teenagers well. We both got hot dogs and fries, and I cheated on my diet a little more thoroughly with a dreamsicle shake that I couldn't resist. The hot dogs were the longer-thinner variety, with good flavor and snap, and those squishy poppyseed buns. Good thin-sliced pickle, lots of celery salt, and slightly chewy sport peppers. The fries were the thinner variety, not shoestring but just right, hot and crispy. And the milkshake was divine. While I'd certainly like to try more of their food, it's the ice cream that would probably get us back even sooner. read more

Great Little spot in Elmhurst just south of the Prarie Path at the corner of York and Vallette. I have to say that this corner seems to build up every year with great little shops and of course Verlare Cleaners. I don't go very often, maybe once a year, but eveytime I do I think why don't I come back more often. There hot dogs are very good, much better than the big box by K-Mart.....plus local!!! Their shakes are amazing. The place is a little smallish, but I think that makes it have a better feel. In the summer they have seating outside. This is a nice hidden gem. The hot dogs are a bit above average, they do come with all the dressings, and the Chicago style relish is excellent! The fries are good, but they do need salt. Prices are fair market, but the seating space can be difficult at times, especially after school hours. Parking is ample next door or sometimes you may get a spot right in front. I recently moved and found this place near me. Firstly, CURLY FRIES!!! With cheese. So good! That alone will have me coming back again and again. I also had the corn dog and it was really good. Nice and hot both inside and out, which sometimes isn't true, so I'm glad it was good. The hot dog was also tasty. For some reason I had a jonesing for a dog (which is rare though I love them) As I was in the area picking up my dry cleaning....why not try here/ very clean inside. Enough small booths and seats to accommodate 20+ customers. Lots of young families and Elmhurstians in here. Ordered a dog with everything...to go.
