Very cool atmosphere with lots of rich history, and so many different things to read throughout this historic building. The service was so so, could be improved with friendlier waitresses. Visiting from out of the area, so was highly recommend. Got the wing deal, great pice but wings were burnt tasting.. oil needed changed and there was minimal sauce on them. I had to ask for extra sauce twice. Crab fries were simply fries with crab seasoning and a side of queso. Fries were also greasy and cooked in burnt grease. I was visiting my elderly parents in Schuylkill Haven and wanted to treat them to something different than the 3 regular spots they always seem to go. Mom said that she heard this place was pretty good, so we went. On arriving, we stood inside the front door for at least 5 minutes before we were even acknowledged. The first thing we were asked was if we had a reservation. Really? An Irish pub where you need a reservation? When I answered "no," we were given the first table that was free. OK. We had a seat and were given menus. This place must be really up-scale - the menus had no prices, instead, a QR code on the page telling us that we could download a menu with prices (it was the same menu, but had prices on each item). Maybe this is a new thing that I haven't seen before, but I travel for a living and never saw this anywhere around the country. I guess St. Clair is way ahead of the curve? Of course, my 90-year-old dad didn't appreciate this one bit! So we ordered our meals. The server was friendly and trotted back to the kitchen to get the order in. And we waited. And we waited. And waited a little more. After at least 45 minutes from ordering, the server came back and said that it would be just a few minutes more. So we waited again. Finally, the food arrived. Dad's burger looked pretty good. Mom and I ordered the fish and chips. The fish had a crunchy batter that wasn't great, but it was OK and the fish was very good (and hot). Fries looked fresh cut, but a bit undercooked. About halfway though the meal, I remembered that the menu said there would be cole slaw - we were missing this. I flagged down the server and asked. She ran back to the kitchen and came out a few minutes later empty-handed. They were out of slaw, so that's why it wasn't on the plate. Oh. So we weren't supposed to notice? She offered a salad and many apologies. I didn't want to deal with a salad at the end of the meal, so I passed. Maybe she'd adjust the bill a bit. Out came the bill - and more apologies. And a few more apologies. The manager was out for the night, so she couldn't authorize a discount for the food that we were promised and didn't get. Nice. Overall, the place looks nice. It's an old tavern from the days when the town was a happening place. All of the old places are gone - all had great food and great service. If the service was adequate, it would be a pretty good place to visit, but either they're really understaffed, or really disorganized. read more

I t was early afternoon and sunny, but it was so dark inside I couldn't even read the menu. I ordered the crab dip for s, and for myself the Irish stew. I expetted stew, what I got looked like a hot beef sandwich without the bread. Thin slices of beef in a watery gravy. not real stew meat. The crab dip was cold, I ordered a berry dacqueri , waitress said she didn't know if they could make it. This was our second choice of the night due to the first choice being closed. Ordered a buffalo chicken cheesesteak and a side of fries. Son had boneless wings with barbecue on the side. Wife had loaded homemade pierogies. Barbecue sauce was spot on, my son loved it. Pierogies were very good. Buffalo chicken cheesesteak was very good and rolls very fresh. On a sidenote they forgot my fresh cut french fries so I had to settle for the chips and Pickle included. Bonus they were handmade chips. So a return trip to the hometown and decided on a late night dinner @ the Wooden Keg Tavern. A Slow Monday evening in St.Clair but still nice to go to a great old time Tavern with an old time wooden bar with the metal pipe foot rail! I ordered the Fish & Chips it comes with fries ad slaw & 2 sides ( I decided to skip the extra sides) The wife ordered the Cuban Sandwich which is pulled pork and Swiss cheese and Smokey honey mustard & served with homemade potato chips. She said it was delicious! The Fish & Chips was a nice sized portion of hand breaded crispy light haddock it was delicious and served steaming hot unfortunately the fresh cut fries were border lined like warm I can't understand how you can order a dish called Fish & Chips and the chips are served cool. My wife said I should send them back unfortunately that doesn't happen with me because I already started my fish and it was like I said steamy hot! Stacey are server was very accommodating and pleasant. I looked back on my reviews I was going to give this review 3 stars but my last review I gave two and why? Because of cold fries! Everytime I've been to this place the bartenders act like they don't see you or want you there. It's absolutely appalling how bad the customer service is. The staff seems like there's enough people to hand a medium crowd but they act like the bar is at max capacity. The bartender has fucked up wife's order, not a huge surprise she didn't write anything down at all and I think everytime I've been here something has been fucked up in the order. Same bartender refuses to acknowledge people coming in the door and a table that needs cleared instead she's just consistently over pouring drinks. This place is laughable anymore and the owner/manager needs their head caved in for ruining such an awesome spot with dogshit management and staff. I am basing this review off my many experiences at the Keg. My main problem with the Wooden Keg is inconsistency, especially within the past two years or so. It used to be a solid 4+ star place to me. This used to be my spot for wings, and now it's just... there. Sometimes a two star, sometimes four, but rarely a five anymore. The Key West Parm wings are usually a solid choice. The worst wings I ever had were a salt and vinegar special, which were dry wings with salt and vinegar chips crumbled over the top. They were as odd as they sound--like a stoner had a genius idea to toss their leftover plain wings in a bag of chip crumbs. Sometimes the wings are deliciously saucy, and sometimes you have to scrape the basket for enough sauce. Their menu is pretty standard pub foods--burgers, fries, sandwiches, and fried apps, with some Irish fare (Excellent fish and chips a few years ago; not sure if that changed). My last visit was for their $10 steak night. $10 will get you a pretty decent steak and side (I chose a salad). My friend and I also ordered their loaded fries. My medium rare was closer to medium well, but for $10, you can't complain too much. There's a wing special night and a half priced apps hour, too. While the food is hit or miss lately, the service is almost consistently subpar. Servers are often inattentive and don't know the menu. I have never seen the same server twice, which seems like a possible management thing to me. A few years ago, a family member requested a condiment on his appetizer on the side. It came out with it on the item. The server asked him if he could keep the item when he brought it to her attention, because if she had to take it back to the kitchen, she would have to pay for it. So I could be wrong, but it seems like the problems with service are related to management. My other issues with the Keg is that it's dark. I'm not talking ambient lighting--I'm talking DARK (it was only by taste that I knew my steak was over cooked--I couldn't see it otherwise). Also, the upstairs seating area tends to blast loud Irish music. LOUD. There is a downstairs seating area that is quieter and has better light. I say try the Keg and form your own opinion. Such a great corner bar and is really neat inside. Could use a little more light. The bartender is not very personable. She also doesn't know how to make drinks. She needs a new line of work. Service was very slow, waited a half hour for a sandwich which was mediocre at best. My buddy had the lobster dip which was average and his chicken Chesapeake sandwich, again, average. Kelly was incredibly rude. Then more of our friends arrived and Kelly ignored them as well and did not greet them or make eye contact. This place is awesome. I'm here for work and there's not a lot to choose from in this town when it comes to chain restaurants which is why I love places like this. This is more of an Irish style place with plenty on the menu. Anything from wings, to soups and salads, to shepherds pie. Beer selection is minimal but they do have some craft on tap. The service is great and it wasn't too crowded. There is seating around the bar. I had the shepherds pie and it was so delicious. The absolute worst service I've ever had in my life. Let me first say that at the time we visited there were 2 tables when we arrived that left shortly after we arrived and one table that came in shortly before we left. The reason for my complaint isn't due to being short staffed. Upon being seated I asked what was in draft, the waitress laughed and said she didn't know but I could look it up online. I found that off putting but looked it up online. I asked what soups the restaurant had and she couldn't remember and she thought that was funny. I did not. We proceeded to order - she was only half paying attention to us at this point because a table of her friends came in so when we ordered a drink refill she only brought half of what we ordered. She delivered the food which was lukewarm at best. We ate the soup and wings we ordered even though the soup tasted burnt and was only warm and the wings were cold on the inside. When we received our food we attempted to eat it. My salad didn't come with the ingredients advertised on the menu. My boyfriend attempted to eat his brisket sandwich even though the meat was ice cold and fatty. After he ate half of it the waitress came back and he told her that it was ice cold and he didn't want it. She immediately took offense to this, to which he tried to explain he was letting her know it was cold, that it was all cold - to let the kitchen know that the food is coming out cold. We even said we aren't asking for another or asking for it to be taken off the bill just letting her know we didn't love it. She took offense to this and became upset and told is she didn't do anything wrong. I told her we weren't suggesting that she did but we didn't enjoy lukewarm food - it wasn't even busy there. She walked away and took his sandwich... we continued a conversation amongst the 2 of us which basically was - why is she offended it wasn't about her. She heard us talking and screamed at us from across the restaurant. At this point I was mortified that feedback about our food would have us yelled at by the staff. I told her that it had nothing to do with her .... it simply wasn't about her. She kept screaming. I didn't want to discuss it any longer with her so I asked if there was a manager or owner we could talk to- she said no, she was the only one we could talk to because there were no managers and no one owned it. Things went worse from that point because she kept yelling at us and we kept saying we just wanted our check and we would come back. She literally said good. On our way out she said fuck you to us. I am appalled by the service we received. I am appalled by her behavior. I sent a concern to the Facebook and also an email. We did not receive any response. Walked in on a Saturday night at 6:30. Two couples and they told us to sit where we wanted. Waited 15 minutes and nobody came to the table. My wife walked up to the bar and asked the bartender for service. She looked at her and walked into the kitchen and never acknowledged her. The food orders were wrong (3 of 16) the drinks and food were on the wrong checks even though we were very clear and one very simple grilled chicken sandwich took over 45 minutes. Seriously understaffed. But that's not the worst... The place is a hazard. The steps to and from the street can't possibly be code. My father in law stumbled and fell to the street. When asked for towels to stop the bleeding from his head, we were given the brown sandpaper towels from the bathroom. Couldn't even be bothered to send out a bar towel. This was the first time that I've been to this place and the moment I walked in with my family it was very confusing and employees were less than hospitable. The menu has no prices on it and they make you scan a QR code in order to get prices if you wanted to know the cost. Finally when the food came out all dishes were subpar except one was exceptionally bad as it contained a metal shaving in it. CHEF RAMSAY HELP !Tuesday night, not overly busy. Thumbs Down Sadly in food department. Took over an hour to get our food. Atmosphere is the ONLY positive. Nice place for drinks, but food quality was poor in our group. We had Wings, Steaks, Fries, Mash Potatoes. The steaks were edible for the price, but the fried items tasted AWFUL, it tasted almost like the fryer oil wasn't changed in a while, everything fried had some sort of deep fried sea food taste to anything else fried, so the wings and fries tasted awful, wings were undercooked. DO NOT try the Butter & Garlic Wings, all oil taste, awful compared to anywhere else I have tried them. Mash was blah, left half of it. Chef Ramsey needs to Help this place in the cooking and kitchen department along with general food quality. What a shame because it's a very nice atmosphere to take clients or a date, worst food I have ever tasted anywhere hands down. In a large group everyone at our table said the food did not taste right. I always finish a steak, this is the first time I actually left half of a steak on it's plate to die, rest in peace with the wings, even left the fries. Tried twice won't be back. I wanted to try something different so I went on yelp and found the Wooden Keg Tavern in Saint Claire, PA. I've been in several Irish pub taverns before and this one did not disappoint. I was greeted with a smile and The sound of Irish music playing in the background. I enjoyed a Chesterfield Ale with Fish and Chips. The food serving sizes were large and fresh. As I was eating the Irish background music faded and the live music started. The environment was very pleasant, the service and my experience was great. I would highly recommend this restaurant to be included on your trip to St. Clair PA. Enjoy the tavern and a nice walk around town. read more
