The PLACE: Great local joint with a great old school Irish pub vibe. We knew we were in the right place when we entered and there was a friendly group of peeps from all walks of life from Firemen to a few office working stiffs. The FOOD: Excellent burgers made and delivered good and -hot- made to order. they nailed it. The BEER: Great variety with some hometown flavors. There's something for (nearly) everyone The STAFF: Cool bartender and Wait staff. gratuity was made for that kind of friendly service. My last review was over nine years old, so I guess it's time for an update. Especially since I haven't really been going to McGrath's much for the past three years. The reason I haven't been going for the past three years is that the last time we ordered a Reuben, it was the most disgusting sandwich I'd ever received. The meat tasted terrible, and the color was "off." The time before that the Blarney bread was undercooked and had so much mayonnaise on it that it was inedible. Two weeks ago, it was undercooked and cold in the middle. The more well-done pieces I was able to eat, but the little pieces I could not. The following week, we decided to try the newly opened section on the corner inside the old Arooga's. Two bartenders working, the bar was not that busy but one of the bartenders closest to us didn't even acknowledge or let us know that she'd be right with us. It took the other very attentive and excellent bartender at the other end of the bar to notice my eyes looking around for some help when she came over to take care of us. She was great! The petite blonde was absolutely the worst and I wish I knew her name so I could call her out in this review. I used to love this place and my previous review is five stars. It's definitely not the same as it was before so I'm not sure we will be visiting this establishment again. read more

Add this to your list! My buddy recommended this place and it did not disappoint. Showed up a few minutes after they opened and it filled up quickly with the lunch rush. That right there tells ya this is the place to be! Sat at the bar, and the service was great! Food was delicious, and the rustic pub feeling passed the vibe check. I'll for sure be coming back for dinner next time I'm in town. FYI, I parked on the street and did have to pay. Good variety on their menu. Typical pub food. Shaun was our server and he was very cordial to us and gave us all the time we needed, but was there to answer questions when we needed. Two thumbs up to him. We ordered the Ryan, Carolina BBQ Burger, and Shepherds Pie. Ryan's meat was tough to me, but the flavors were all good. Just wish there was more sauce to soak up the drier meat. Carolina BBQ Burger was juicy. There was a big hunk of fat on the brisket at the end which wasn't appetizing. So lost some money there, but the flavors of it were fine. Shepherds pie was disappointing to me. I've had it in Ireland before, which I can't compare this to since that was more authentic. But I've had plenty of bad shepherds pies in the past, but some good in the US (Pensacola Florida in particular). The veggies hadn't been cooked all the way through so they were too hard to bite through. Good amount of meat though and the sauce was decent. Mashed potatoes could've used some more flavor. I wouldn't order it again, but they did a decent job for PA. read more

The Buffalo Garlic Habanero sauce was outstanding -- packed with flavor and just the right amount of heat. The wings themselves were fried to perfection, crispy on the outside and tender inside. Really excellent pub, which is unsurprising since the owner is also responsible for the also great Sturges Speakeasy and Mad Moose Tavern. The beer list had a nice selection of brews for a variety of tastes. Very accessible. For food, I had the oh-so-boring chicken tenders with a side of pub fries. "Oh-so-boring" is a comment on my tastes--bot the food, which was excellent. The pub fries were especially noteworthy as both crisp and unique with a circular/crinkle cut. Yum yum freakin' yum. Service was fast, friendly, and excellent--as I've learned to expect at this owner's establishments. McGrath's does a nice job of channeling true Irish pub atmosphere--I'd rate 8 out of 10, with 10 reserved for pubs in Ireland and 9 for the rare US pubs that fully embrace the vibe with food, drink, and music. Despite my Irish pub snobbery, I wholeheartedly recommend McGrath's as a downtown Harrisburg spot. read more

We had rave reviews from a fellow foodie we know as to where the "best fish and chips" in town are... We had a large group and most ordered them. They are made with salmon which I normally enjoy very much but apparently not so much in fish and chips. The salmon was so overcooked and the flavor was mild to bland. The chips were good but that's not what I came here for. The service was so slow despite the restaurant not really being full by any means. Majority of patrons were sat at or near the bar and we were in the back room area. Honestly, the first person to get their fish and chips was done eating by the time the last person even got their basket of food. Everyone enjoyed the drinks and some even complimented the food but as for me, I will not be able to give a good review. I will keep searching for good fish and chips in the Harrisburg/York area, but alas my standards are set high from eating the freshest fish and chips in Iceland quite a few years ago. As Irish pubs go, it was cozy and had TVs with the college football playing and a jukebox playing a mix of music. The patrons were lively but I did not enjoy the smell of smoke or cigars when I first walked in. Fortunately it was mostly unnoticeable where we sat. The server was friendly but not very attentive. We kept trying to catch her attention for drink refills and more water but it took way too long. All in all the company and conversation saved the night as it always does, but I will not be getting the fish and chips here again. read more

Our group would like to petition to grant McGrath Irish Pub 6 out of 6 stars. This was admittedly our second choice for dinner, when Appalachian Brewing Company was closing at 7pm, but we were not sorry. We were able to call ahead to reserve the last table in the back. The space itself is small but charmingly decorated for autumn. The kitchen might have been short staffed, but when we told our waitress one of us needed to catch a train, their entree came out likitysplit. This was our introduction to Irish potato pancakes, or boxty. That part wasn't amazing, to be honest (undercooked?), and the Brussels sprouts were okay, but the duck. The duck, with its crispy skin, was divine. And the braised short rib fell off the bone in one piece. The veggies on that entree were just meh, but the gravy. The gravy was revelatory. If you could have put that gravy on thise short ribs, with some rosemary roasted Brussels sprouts, the resulting entree would have been osgasmic, positively indecent to consume in public. The table enjoyed a couple of Guinnesses and Irish mules, an Irish coffee (the kind with Baileys), as well as a dessert with cheesecake and ice cream. The prices were fair. There are single-room, gender-segregated restrooms, but a male employee came out of the ladies room when I wanted to go in. We have consistently loved the food here. The bartenders are great too. The bar is a bit awkward to eat at. But maybe that's just me. And it definitely doesn't stop us from eating at the bar. Wow where do I start? The bartender at the crown plaza recommended McGraths to us. We saw many great reviews on yelp. We are a group of six adults, walked in and we were sat right away. Ordered some basic meals off their menu. One order was a corned beef Ruben, the meat looked more like bacon or jerky, not edible. Two ladies ordered the Pittsburgh salad. When they were delivered, the fries were cold and wet, not edible. 2 folks went with the pasta dish when that was delivered. Cold noodles, same with the sauce with unmeted cheese, and a glob of ricotta, A cold pasta dish! I went with the beef short ribs over mashed potatoes. I know this is a fatty piece of meat, but there was literally no meat. It was all fat. I never thought to ask if the mashed potatoes were real. Why wouldn't they be? This is an Irish restaurant, potatoes are a staple in many dishes. These mashed potatoes were disgusting from a box and the side of broccoli was brown. All the food took over an hour to get to the table. We watched people come in sit down and get their food before we were seen ours. Server could care less, manager walking by never stopped. There were 3 of us we got an appetizer,Entrées, Desert and drinks. It was very very good. Best Fries of my life. I have been all over this Hemisphere and haven't had fries that good anywhere. The burgers were also amazing.Blarney bread appetizer delicious. The only issue for this entire experience was wait time. They were very busy so between courses it was about 15-20 minutes each. McGrath's Pub offers a nice selection of craft beer and delicious cocktails, alongside Irish and American food choices. The pub, while small, extends lengthwise to the back to create a larger feel with a dining area separated from the bar area. This gives a nice divide for those dining and not wanting to be in the hustle and bustle of the smaller bar area. The food menu offers both pub/bar food and full dinner meals. We started with the duck flatbread, which was very good with a nice balance of the blue cheese and sweetness of the pears. Entries we tried the pierogies (delicious), French Dip sandwich special served with pub fries- very good and nice portion size, and the Shepard's Pie- tasty. The service was also very prompt and friendly from everyone we encountered. The one down side that we couldn't get past is the very strong smell of stale cigarette smoke that hits you as you walk in and lingers through the restaurant. First time at McGrath's on Locust. As someone who has been to the Guinness brewery in Dublin and pubs there, my standards are probably higher than some and McGrath's didn't disappoint. I had Scotch Eggs, hard boiled eggs in sausage cups. They were big and delicious; even my wife, not a sausage connoisseur loved them. She had the Irish Beer Mussels, also wonderful. These came with two big slices of bread, which was nice; many places seem to skimp on the bread and the sauce was too good not to sop up and eat. Service was cheerful and the right balance of there when wanted without being intrusive. We went at 4:00 PM on a weekday and had easy immediate seating. 3 beers and the two Starters came to $40. read more

For dinner, he had Shepard's Pie - a dish he also makes himself. Heavy on potato and lighter on filling - flavor was very good. Fun, Irish-American style pub where the political staffers go to blow-off steam and the locals go to grab a beer or whisky. The food is solid, nothing fancy, but a good compliment to the straight-forward drinks and atmosphere. The specials are usually tasty. When in doubt, I recommend the wraps or wings. The upstairs area is much more of a typical bar with some hangout spots. Kind of reminds me of a speakeasy. The bartenders are all friendly and attentive. Tucked inside what looks like just a welcoming Irish pub with all the craic is a superb kitchen. The short rib boxty was delicious and fall-off-the-bone tender. The boxty was a mite gluey, but had great potato flavor despite having soaked up the mouth-watering sauce. (Maybe serve the boxty on the side?) My guests reported that the meltdown burger was cooked as ordered and had just the right amount of kick, and that the sausage stroganoff was also tasty, with tasty chunks of Irish bangers and perfectly cooked egg noodles. I come to Harrisburg for work a few weeks a year and love exploring downtown. McGrath's has been busy every time I've come here and I've never had a bad experience. Later in the evening it does get difficult to find a place to sit and I don't love that people are basically just standing over you waiting for a table to open up but what can you do, it's not very large and there isn't any where else to stand. Lots of great cold drink options, the ambiance is wonderful and has a good food menu. Every server/bartender I've met here are nice and helpful. Can't wait to come back in the Spring when I'm back in town! read more

I looked foward to going to McGraths for their Fish and Chips. It was fried, old Salmon that smelled old and fishy. I will never go back.
