Our first time at The Yellow Cactus! My sons and I came for lunch, ordering cheese dip to enjoy with our chips and salsa. I enjoyed both their mild and spicier salsa. Good flavors. I'm already craving it for tomorrow. My youngest traditionally ordered a cheeseburger with fries (his version of Mexican). The burger was massive! My other son enjoyed the 2 tacos with rice and I did the combo with a burrito, taco and rice. So much food! I couldn't even make it to the taco. Lots of beef stuffed inside. FOUR STARS PLUS!!! FIVE STARS PLUS FOR FOOD!! This Jeffersontown location is in a strip mall. Several other eateries there now. The inside is much prettier than you would expect. The best Mexican I've eaten for the price. Delicious salsa plus a spicy ranch flavored dip....yum! Big portions, a queso like topping if u choose rather than traditional red sauce. Queso delicious on huge seafood burritos entree. Was with 14 others. Everyone loved what they got. Bargain lunch specials. LOOK UP for DAILY specials!! Very Quick service...even a speedy Gonzalez menu if u are on the run. Servers very prompt and friendly. Just one thing....if you choose a virgin drink, our experience....you will not get it. Mehhh...I really wanted to like this place and had high hopes based on the ratings, but it just didn't hit the mark for me. Pretty on par for any fast casual Mexican spot like El Nopal, which I also didn't like much at all either. Mexican places like this seem to have multiple locations around town so maybe I'm just not a fan and other people are... Everything we had seemed to be just sitting around or heated up in the microwave. The tostaguac wasn't horrible, but the ground beef was luke warm. The chille relleno tasted fine but was so hot it had to came out of the microwave. Somehow the taquitos weren't even hot, which should've came directly from the fryer. The queso was our favorite part, along with the free salsa. The decor and everything inside was cute and looked nice overall. It was located in a small strip mall and the other main reason we ate here was Bingo a few businesses down. The yellow cactus is a Mexican eatery in the Jeffersontown portion of Louisville tucked away In a very massive and unassuming shopping center off six mile lane. I travel the area frequently and have never noticed this place until I stopped in the other day to have lunch with my family and some family friends. Walking in and it's a rather spacious place. Extremely colorful and vibrant decor and vibe. Like so colorful and vibrant it would be hard to be an a sour mood here. Very uplifting. All the tables and Chairs looked to be hand crafted and hand painted. Someone spent a great Detail on making this place appear the way it does. The staff on this sleepy weekday we stopped in was pretty sleepy themselves. We was the only customers in on a random late November monday at 11am and all the workers sat a table playing on there phones majority of the time. We had a large party and our food came out fast. But if we needed anything we had to stand up and give a neighborly wave. I jokingly asked the teenagers in my party if they were communicating with the staff since they all had faces buried in phones. The complementary chips and salsa weee very good. Salsa had nice flavor and chips good taste as well. Came with traditional mild and hot options. Put party of ten people sampled the menu pretty well. The younger kids went with a kids chicken tender meal and it got mixed reviews. Some ate it all and others a piece here and there. My wife got a steak ranchero and while it was overpriced at around $20 she did say it was good. Said steak nice and tender. My oldest daughter got a steak burrito and her best friend got a steak quesadilla. They both stuck with the theme that the steak was top notch and they enjoyed it. I personally got the Pollo con chorizo which was grilled chicken, cheese sauce, rice and chorizo. Our friend got a Similar plate except it had no chorizo. She loves hers and had plenty of cheese sauce. Me I was disappointed. It's like they skimped put on the cheese sauce to add some chorizo and my chicken was rubbery. So rubbery that when I went to cut it up what little cheese sauce I had slide off my plate and on the table. Bummer. Overall majority of the people in our party loved our meal. Place had great vibe and decor. Our waitress maintained her focus for the most part but it isn't easy being the only one working when all your co workers are sitting at a table playing on the phone. I get it. Slow boring day but you have to understand perception that can put off. I'm sure on busy days they don't do that. As for the kitchen staff they were very fast and we got of food out quick, correct and warm. Solid Mexican eatery. I've always said (at least since moving to Louisville) that when one Mexican restaurant closes it's doors (Mi Casita) another one opens. Such is the case with The Yellow Cactus. We were able to visit on the first weekend they opened, after having waited for what seems like forever for it to open. We'd drive by frequently, looking to see an opening date but not seeing anything. Fortunately my wife takes Karate around the corner and came home on this Saturday and when I asked where she wanted to go for lunch her answer was "just drive. I'll navigate". The restaurant is very colorful and the menu is huge. By "huge" I mean "enormous". By "enormous" I mean "extensive" By "Extensive" I mean "Freakin' MASSIVE!" The furniture is decidedly Mexican, very similiar to the very colorful table and chairs you see frequently at Mexican eateries, but uniquely on the back of all of the booths it says "Fiesta Mexicana". I love this kind of furniture and if my dining area at home was large enough we'd be eating at this furniture every day. Well, until my wife came home... We were seated immediately and handed the aforementioned menus. The is A LOT to peruse through where this menu is concerned. The chips and salsa we good. The chips were your typical tortilla chip affair, the mild sauce pretty average, but the hot salsa? EXCELLENT! Spicier than your average salsa, so I loved it I settled on the Burrito Carbon, my wife the Arroz con Pollo. Both were excellent and served VERY hot. I'm going to say less than ten minutes from order to delivery. The atmosphere is very laid back and quiet. Our server was on the spot with drink refill and anything we needed. Enjoyed our dinner, food and service until the bill came with a $4.50 surcharge for paying with a credit card. This was a shocker as there was no mention of this prior to presenting my card. Granted, no fault of the server but instead of a 25% tip ($100+ bill), I reduced it by $2 to so everyone had skin in the game. We entered Yellow Cactus (@ 9111 Galene Dr Louisville, KY 40299), a clean, bright, and cheery environment at 3:30 in afternoon. We, my wife and I, went exploring here and had a great time. We are new in Louisville. My choice, El Patron burrito, with the steak option was a tasty, new experience for me, in this new restaurant for us. My wife enjoyed her meal, a Chichimanga filled with Chicken, as well! The entire restaurant's furnishings were uplifting, and very uniquely crafted. Our server was upbeat, friendly, helpful, and effective. This was our Valentine's Day outing, and the waitress, graciously included a complimentary plate of cinnamon baked wafers, covered with chocolate syrup and whipped creme - (we grew up calling them "crustos'). For both of us, there was plenty in each entree, along with sit-and-dip nachos, and a sweet light-colored sauce, a Hot and a Hotter Salsa, before and during the meal. We so enjoyed this date, I, for us, took time to personally thank the manager on duty, regarding the hospitality, food, service and the presentation provided by the Yellow Cactus, before we left. The Yellow Cactus is awesome! We were in search of a new Mexican restaurant to try near our home, and this place was the first to peak our interest. For some reason Google says it is closed permanently, but it is in fact open and fully operational. I was immediately intrigued at the colorful decor upon walking in... It's so pretty in here! The food is pretty much the same as you'd get it at your standard Mexican joint, but it's great and a large portion at that! Very friendly staff and incredibly quick service! Gave this restaurant a try based on the reviews and unique name. Nice place inside, but on the small side. They immediately took my take out order for two. I ordered the steak rachero and chickens wings for her. Half of the meal was good and half was not so good. That steak had pretty bad flavor to it. She loved the chicken wings but not parts of the sides. I liked the rice and beans. Bottom line I will skip this place from now on. read more

Returned here recently and the menu has changed. It appears new management may have taken over. Service continues to be great as the staff is beyond incredible. The food has definitely taken a step back from 5 stars to 2 stars. In the past the food was fresh and incredible. Now it is on par with most of the other Mexican restaurants in the area. I'd been hearing a lot about yellow cactus. So I wanted to check out the hype. I must say it had lived up to the hype. I ordered the steak fajitas quesadilla. The well seasoned steak and peppers tucked in nicely into a fresh flaky tortilla drizzled with creamy queso was everything I wanted and more. I was only able to eat half due to the portions. Had to stop in our neighborhood restaurant to support local businesses. This little place is nice. Very clean, bright staff is friendly and helpful. It has a nice little bar and plenty of TV's. The booths are nice and plenty of room. It has both tables and booths. My wife and I were pleased. The chips were fresh and warm,, the salsa was just right, not all watered down. It had plenty of taste and heat. Our main dish was chicken fajitas. It had a good taste and was well cooked. For dessert we had the chiros and they were wonderful. This is such a great Mexican restaurant. In a city where all of the Mexican restaurants appear to essentially be the same, Yellow Cactus is better. My wife has noticed that several do not have mole, but Yellow Cactus does add it's very good. My wife makes authentic mole with Mexican chocolate and spices purchased from a market in LA, so it probably came from Mexico... yellow cactus mole comes close. So I will not eat at this PLACE AGAIN! Went to the Jeffersontown location ordered the TRIFECTA COMBO, they never gave me my third option! When I called the manager said the beans and rice were the third option. I pointed out the menu clearly states the beans and rice come with the combo! It also clearly states to choose three items and not that the beans and rice counted as one! I guess the Duo is really a single. The manager was extremely rude saying I can do nothing for you it is what I say. Well why don't your read your menu! False advertising and super poor service! We just had dinner at the Yellow Cactus. When we walked in a white board listed todays specials including a 22 oz lime margarita for $6.99, flavored for $7.99. We ordered 2 lime margaritas. When the bill came the charge was $8.99 for each drink. We walked to the front of the restaurant and double checked the price on the white board. We went up to pay for our dinner and questioned the difference in price, the man at the register said, no that's not the price today, even though that was listed on the white board as today's special. We paid the $8.99 price and left. The restaurant should have honored the price on the white board, we will never go back. Ruined an otherwise good dinner. There are other restaurants to choose, go somewhere else read more
