Husband loved his made-to-order Pastrami & Swiss sandwich, and I loved my Cranberry Cashew salad with house-made vinaigrette. I loved this place. I went there twice during my stay in Oneonta which was from late Friday (checked-in to hotel at 10:30pm) to check-out Monday at 11am. Sorry I didn't know about this place the first time I was in Oneonta 4 years ago. The decor is great. You can find lots of pics here on YELP. The service was very friendly. Not only was the waitress very nice and helpful with questions I had about the food options but several other people that worked there (maybe 3 others) asked me how I was and how my food was. One of them may have been a manager or even an owner that took the time during an incredibly busy day (first day that the college students report to school) to talk to me. Went back the next morning for their breakfast sandwich for my drive back to NYC. He remembered me and welcomed me back. As for the food I had three different items off the menu. The breakfast sandwich, the chili and the yellow submarine which is a vegetarian sandwich with "the spread of the week". I'm not a vegetarian but LOVED that sandwich. All three items were very good. I was visiting Oneonta New York. So I pulled out my trusty yelp app and searched for top rated sandwich shops. The yellow deli was top rated. Although I did see some comments on how they will push their "religious" views on you and treat women different. I decided to check it out for myself. So I rolled into The Yellow Deli for lunch. The interior was beautiful! The walls were all hand painted there was handcrafted wood work! It was stunning. We were sat quickly and brought sample of their specialty Yerba mate teas. We had the peach flavor and the mango. They were delicious!! The sandwich I had was turkey avocado. It came with chips and a pickle. It was huge!! The service was great! We left full and feeling great. I wondered what all the reviews were about the religious stuff and treating women different? The next morning before I left to catch my plane I stopped in to get on of those amazing mango yerba mate teas!! I walked in and the guy who worked there remembered me from the day before. He greeted me asked where I was from. I told him I was from Vegas he said he was also. Comped me a drink and asked if he could talk to me quick about Vegas. So he told me he left Vegas because it was a sinful place that promotes chasing the ladys. I was thinking to each there own. Although then he went on to tell me women who dress reveling are telling men to come and "CLAIM THEM". That it is wrong to dress a certain way. He went on to say very offensive things to me about women and Vegas. He wanted me to join the 12 tribes. I left feeling very uncomfortable. I believe everyone has a right to there views.Although I don't believe that if I am in a public place a stranger has no right to push his views on me. Or tell me how to dress!! I remember seeing the Twelve Tribes members building this place up before I moved to the city and I don't believe they finished until one of my first visits back home. Their attractive sign out front was one of the first things I saw and I was instantly intrigued. I had heard from a friend that their veggie burger was delicious and I've been dying to try out The Yellow Deli ever since. Let me first address the "cult" issue: It took me quite some time to persuade certain people I know to come along because they were stuck on the fact that Twelve Tribes is considered a "cult" by people who are most likely followers of the more popular and accepted veins of Christianity. I think everyone should take a deep breath and get over the negative "cult" label. Based on my interactions with the Twelve Tribes and what I hear about them from people who live in or near Oneonta they are a harmless, friendly group of people who offer to help the less fortunate in the area and now have a great restaurant with homemade organic food at reasonable prices in an economically depressed area. I personally don't follow a religion and do not agree with some of their beliefs but I don't think that's reason enough to refuse their business. One of the issues I came across reading other's reviews was the feeling that they treat women differently and perhaps more negatively than men when serving them. I arrived at The Yellow Deli with a group of women and we were welcomed by a very friendly man who treated us to a selection of Yerba Mate teas since it was our first time there. I did not get the impression at all that he was looking down on us condescendingly. We had a second server while there who did act considerably more reserved but I didn't interpret that as him having a negative view of women and undeserving of a decent tip. All of that aside...the teas were fruity and fresh tasting. I opted for a caffe latte however--two of them actually. Obviously they were good. I started my lunch with the chili. WHOA. I think it's safe to say their chili is the BEST I've EVER HAD. The homemade bread with slices of jalapeno peppers in it that came along with it was the perfect partner and you know I was dippin' it, taking unattractive looking big mouth fulls because I couldn't help my animal instinct to devour such deliciousness at the highest speed possible. Somehow I still had room left for the hot pastrami sandwich on rye bread I also ordered with a side of chips (kettle cooked I believe). One of the tastiest sandwiches I've had. Across the table one of my fellow diners had ordered a salad and was mentioning how fresh the vegetables looked. I can't forget to mention the homemade furniture and general interior. AMAZING. I want to live inside this place. Beautifully done and they successfully achieved a warm, inviting, back to a natural, country roots atmosphere. This place is truly awesome. Upon entering you step back in time to a place in history that had love for nature, community, and fine workmanship. One can sit amongst other diners around a fire or find a cozy corner to enjoy a little privacy. You are greeted with enthusiasm, as though you've always belonged there... The drinks are uncommon, but delicious. I always order the Banana Milk and enjoy a running joke about milking bananas to obtain it delicious nectar. The first time I went to the deli, I was craving my glass of wine and knew I'd have to do without. I was a little cranky. But all of that washed away because the outstanding experience of eating at the Yellow Deli overpowered my deep love of wine!!! Now THAT'S impressive. I went there to wait for my friend, whilst waiting, I order a "coca cola" it wasn't a coke. It was a weird version of soda that didn't even taste like coke. So looking past that because it doesn't matter. I was going about my business when one of the "workers there" more like a cult recruiter, tried to tell me to live with him and his 12 friends and they have a house on chestnut street and so I kind of ignored him. Within minutes later he was staring at me across the room and kept trying to talk to me. They gave me a card concerning their cult and it was weird and creepy and stalkerish and I've never been back since and it's been three years. Upon arriving in Oneonta on a chilly November afternoon, my friend and I were looking for a delicious, inexpensive, cozy place to have lunch, and that's exactly what we got at The Yellow Deli! After parking for free in the garage behind The Yellow Deli, we walked into the first level of the restaurant and were brought upstairs to be seated. The first thing we noticed was the warm, woodsy decor of the restaurant - natural slab wood tables, shiny wood floors and furniture, hanging plants, hand-painted images on the walls, big windows, and an old-fashioned "dumbwaiter" lift that brought food orders from downstairs to upstairs. The waitstaff was very friendly to us and our waiter was very calm and zen. In a conversation with our waiter at the end of the meal, we found out that all the staff at the Yellow Deli both work and live together in a community that shares all of the profits they make as well as the staff from several of the other Yellow Deli restaurants across the country. Who knew? Even before we found this out, the sense of community and hard work among the staff was definitely evident. After looking over the menu and zooming in on soups and sandwiches, my friend and I decided to start off with a delicious bowl of chili, which came along with a cheesy jalapeno bread that was to die for! I swear, I would order a whole loaf of it if I could. For lunch, my friend ordered the Deli Rose sandwich and the Yerba Mate Latte and was totally impressed. I went for the Veggie Burger and ate the whole thing, down to the last potato chip and pickle. For dessert, we ordered the Cream Cheese Pie with Blueberry topping and the Sweet Potato Pound Cake to go. Don't confuse the cream cheese pie for cheesecake - it's much lighter and reminded me a little bit of the tartness of yogurt. The Sweet Potato Pound Cake was dense and delicious. I only ate half of it before sticking it in the fridge, but even chilly, it made for a good midnight snack. The Yellow Deli is an interesting place to eat. The place itself is beautiful, with interesting architecture and aesthetic decor that emulates a quiet cabin in the woods. The food has been excellent every time I've gone; they serve breakfast all night and morning, which is nice if you want late night pancakes. The people that work there are members of an organization called the Twelve Tribes, and if you're wearing anything related to the Grateful Dead, be prepared to talk to them for a while. They are very nice people, but they are very immersed in their hippie movement that they've got going on. The Yellow Deli operates on a 24/5 schedule, staying open from noon on Sunday until Friday at 3 pm. It is a local favorite for the newest wave of "hippie-youth"--primarily SUCO or Hartwick students. Dining at this establishment is usually an overall positive experience, but it helps if you enjoy the sometimes awkward conversations the staff gets you into. read more

The owners of The Yellow Deli are very kind and welcoming people and it's very clear that they put a lot of work and effort in running the place. It was a lovely experience eating there. I'm glad I didn't look up the Yellow Deli People (aka The Twelve Tribes Community) online before popping into this place because it sounds a little too "out there" or cult-ish for me and that would have prevented me from dining there which would have been a real shame. Firstly, the atmosphere is amazing. The place is spotlessly clean and the woodwork is just beautiful. It's like walking into a fairytale cottage. The foods they make are hearty and fresh and their breads are fantastic (their baker really knows what he's doing). The people in my party ordered the veggie burger, Reuben sandwich, lentil soup, Volkswich sandwich, sweet potato pound cake (incredible!) and the cream cheese pie with strawberries. This place is an authentic commune complete with utopian philosophy hand-painted on the wall, hand crafted tables, a commune-owned-managed-and-run restaurant with amazing food and service! Indeed, I think many of the folks working here literally founded the place? This vibe was a trip but best of all the food was fresh and great, and so was the service. The bread was absolutely the star of the show. Amazing. My co-guest has a salad and after trying the bread she wished she had gone with a sandwich. Don't make that mistake. I came here with a couple of mom-friends to have some late-night "whoops, we were too busy feeding the kids to eat anything ourselves" dinner. We sat down with our knitting and were (finally) greeted by what was easily the most unenthusiastic and under-impressed server I've ever met. He was utterly dry, lacking in smiles or humor. We all felt like we had somehow done something wrong by coming there. After reading all the reviews and looking farther into this supposed religion, I see now the lack of favoritism towards the females. But it makes me feel less than fuzzy about the whole thing. The ambiance is amazing, that's no lie. The place is all warm woods and amber lighting, it feels really lodge-like and inviting. I wish the staff was equally warm, and maybe a little less spaced-out. I was really wondering if there was anything at all going on behind the cashier's eyes. I ordered a draught root beer, which was very uniquely flavored, and a custom sandwich, which was just okay- the veggies were fresh and flavorful, but the hummus was a little tahini-heavy for my liking, and the pumpernickel not dark enough- but that's my personal tastes! Everything was fresh and tasty, regardless. The feelings we were left with caused my friends to not even leave tips, which is hard to do, honestly. This place is fantastic! The food is all amazing, it's so good! For such simple sounding dishes, they are all done so well. The extra touches and fun different items offered, like banana milk, yum! Their smoothies were so good, and when we found out they were all made from pure fruit, juice, and just a touch of honey, this place offers not only good food, but food you can feel good about putting into your body. My little one absolutely loved her peanut butter, banana, and honey sandwich on a whole wheat roll, and we loved EVERTYTHING we ordered. I ordered their ruben, and it was by far the best I have had thus far anywhere, and my wife tried their Deli Rose sandwich, a smoothie, and their peach mate drink. We both shared everything we got and was so impressed with how good it was, if only we had one of these restaurants where we live. The staff was so friendly and attentive, and had such sweet and genuine attitude of wanting to make our stay a nice one. The atmosphere was amazing, I have never eaten any where like this before. The beautiful wood work, metal work, and the bathrooms where so much fun, called EVE and ADAM! We really enjoyed our stay in every way and really hope people don't let the churches scare them away because of so-called religious differences, this place is such a great place to eat and the prices are so good also. The Yellow Deli (or the Common Ground as it was known its first year open) is a small restaurant on the corner of main street and chestnut, run entirely by the twelve tribes of Israel- a religious group that also owns a house in Oneonta. All the men wear long hair, buttoned up shirts and beards, and the women old fashioned house dresses. Some more cynical people might refer to them as a cult, but they deny it, and they certainly do not seem like psychotic or violent people. I'll get to more on this later though. The ambience of the place is really incredible, it's like something out of the 19th century- with all wooden/log interior, a dumbwaiter, and soothing instrumental irish folk-esque music. On certain nights they have live folk music being played, I remember having dinner here on St. Patty's day at Oneonta when there was live music before we hit the town was a wonderful tipsy delight. The food is fitting to this ambience, all of it is freshly made, non-processed, simple, mostly healthy, relatively inexpensive and delicious. They have a homemade selection of many breads, and a variety of unique drinks- including freshly brewed mates and teas from various regions, as well as my personal favorite Banana Milk. They also have many vegetarian options. The staff is VERY friendly, welcoming and gentle group of people. I believe it part of their beliefs to be kind to others and help those in need. They don't bring up their religious views around you, rather they have some pamphlets laying around if you're into them. Being a bit of a hippie on the inside myself, I really dig the whole communal idea of everyone sharing and working together at the restaurant with no one true owner, and the money going to support their community rather than for one person's profit or modern materialistic objects/technologies. Where I take away one star is that the groups's beliefs are a little... radical. They are very kind and peaceful people, which is good, but on the other hand they apparently believe in things like segregation and are a bit backwards on gay and woman's rights. They have a pretty off-putting poster (or used to have it at least) in their bathroom which essentially tells a story in support of the rights of a landlord who discriminated against a minority. But otherwise, it is a great atmosphere and eatery to stop by when in the city of hills. read more

The ambiance alone is worth it: hand carved furniture, exposed brick scrawled with colorful art, and fine woodwork make this place feel like a wayfarer's tavern from the days of yore. For drinks, they'll serve you a pint of their special draft root beer in a frosty mug or let you sample their iced mate (rhymes with "latte," for those unfamiliar) which comes in peach, papaya and hibiscus. They don't serve alcohol. Try their specialty sandwiches or make up your own. I've taken a liking to making a turkey sandwich on rye with avocado. Just throwing that out there. Also, they now serve breakfast before 10 a.m. Poached eggs and a waffle with fresh fruit are my picks. ALL their food is fresh and tasty. Definitely try the fruit smoothies too. The staff are very friendly. For some, too friendly. But they're always courteous, and honestly, the good food is worth the odd momentary inconvenience of sitting there nodding while they talk about something. Personally, I enjoy a bit of conversation if I happen to go there alone, and some of them know me by name. If you are coming from out of town, definitely give this place a shot! From the unique people to the delicious food to the amazing architecture of the restaurant, eating at the Yellow Deli isn't just a meal, it's an experience you'll be telling people afterwards. The first thing you notice is the people -- they're definitely some sort of... "group." But not the creepy kind -- the cool, old, hippie kind. The food, however, is amazing. The waiter even brought us a selection of different teas that they serve, free of charge, to decide which one we'd like to order with our meal. Walked into this place and it was NOT at all what I was expecting. I actually think I said, Where in the name of Jesus H. Hippie did Yelp send me? It's not what I would call a deli. But after the initial shock, I realized it was a decent place. Very "zen" and organic. Got seated and they brought over some tea/juice samples. Nice touch, I tried them and ended up ordering the Peach Mate to drink and went with the veggie burger. Both came quick and were freaking delicious. I don't know if they were putting hippie voodoo into it, but it was great. They went heavy on the avocado, which I totally dig. Cashed out and saw they were selling some Yerba Mate tea, so I grabbed some of that as well as some organic body wash. Hey, I have a little hippie in me as well! Food is great, Staff is friendly, atmosphere is cool and I would def return. NOW: Apparently this place is ran by a "cult" and the only reason I know that is from the reviews on Yelp. An absolute jewel in the middle of "nowhere". As a skier we often head to Killington from our home base in Philly. Our trips usually end with a final shortened day of skiing and 6+ hour drive home. We're usually hunger, thirsty and cold. While driving down the main highway our options for decent food looked sparse. We decided to drive into downtown Oneonta -- just off the main road, and spotted this bright yellow sign just around the corner from the main light. When you walk in, you're immediately presented with a decor that's beyond anything you could imagine. Incredible ceiling tiles, real natural wood railings, seats carved into real tree trunks and wonderfully homey fireplaces. The staff was also extremely friendly and willing to please. The menu was loaded with exceptional items that made our mouths water. We're near-vegetarians so it was great to see several items on the menu that fit the bill. I had a veggie burger and a creamy potato soup. Both were out of this world. Every member of our group of four loved their different meals. Their drinks are also extremely diverse and just as good as the rest of their fare. This is a place I wish I lived closer to. As it is, it will now be a permanent stop on our trips up from here on out. read more
