I've driven by this restaurant many times but have never stopped but at the recommendation of a friend my sister and I tried it. It was Friday at lunch time and a few people were there but not overcrowded. The waitress was very prompt and friendly. I saw a sign on the table the last Friday of the month they had sauerbraten. I asked the waitress about it and she said it was a family recipe and very good. She was right!! The noodles were homemade, the beef was tender and the sauce didn't have too much ginger. The portion was huge so I took 2/3 of it home. I saved room for homemade pie which was fantastic! I have to say it was the best pie I've had at a restaurant in a long time. The waffles are always so hard on the outside, I'm beginning to think quikrete is a core ingredient used. Even the chocolate milk doesn't taste right. You hate to see it, because Thee Diner is considered by some as a staple of the Cicero area. Thee Diner is like a senile dog. It once flourished with freedom and vibrancy. Now, it's debilitated, pained, and in need of someone to put it out of its misery. I wish thee diner the best, but I feel as though it's in the public's interest to practice abstinence with it. My husband and kids went here this past weekend for the 1st time. We've driven past it many times and the parking lot is always packed. Our waitress was one of the nicest I've met. Food prices were reasonable. I had the open-faced meatball sandwich which was decent. My husband ordered the cajun chicken sandwich that lacked some flavor since it was supposed to be cajun. We ordered the kids a chicken tender entree to share. The tenders were really good and had a really good flavor. Their fries were great. Macaroni salad was solid. They were out of the apple crumb pie which was a bummer to the hubs. They had an interesting display of jewelry on the counter. Pins made out of dominoes. Each had an unique painting on it. I picked out 4 for $10. Turns out our waitress' sister makes them. We later returned for their ice cream and milkshakes. Kids enjoyed their cherry milkshake and the other, blueberry milkshake. Me and my niece went to Thee Diner for the first time. I've driven by there for years and I've been wanting to go there. I finally went there and it was such a disappointment. The waitress Megan (I believe was her name) seemed so cold. We ordered hot chocolate that wasn't even hot. At one o'clock they where out of soup. The chili was okay but it was very greasy. The French fries (for my niece) tasted like they were frozen and that they came from Walmart. There patty melt was okay but I've had better. How do you screw up a patty melt? Maybe I should have tried their breakfast. I asked for a sample of the sausage gravy, she rolled her eyes and said No you'll have to order a side of it, all of the other restaurants I went to gladly gave me a sample. I ordered from grubhub and it's not that far from my house so the food should not have been THAT cold. Home fries tasted like actual rocks and i couldn't keep eating them. I when there to have a heath sunday. I got a Sunday with peanuts in place of the heath. Told them about it and they told me it was heath. I do know the difference between them because I usually get the heath sunday. And I don't like peanuts. They said they would make me other kind for sunday. So I ask for a butterfinger sunday. When I got it, it had very little toppings on it and did not taste rite. I have been getting ice cream here for years. Now because of the worse service I have every got. Plain diner, generally dumpy and yelling cheap! Specials board listed 4 entrees, including Italian Mac & Cheese (with sausage & tomato) and 2 "homemade" soups. Beef Vegetable Soup $1.75 a cup, seemed to be a mix of soft, canned veggies, poor beef chunks and a strong, lousy tomato base. From the adequate-looking menu - Turkey Club Wrap $5.50, had a good mix of deli turkey wraped around enough good bacon, plus lettuce, tomato and extra mayo. They didn't grill it as was asked for. Meatball Sub $4.75 presented a big plain roll holding 3 (should have been 4 to fit) medium-sized misshaped balls with nothing added, so, no flavor. Stopped for ice cream on my way home this evening, ordered a medium twist in a dish...very disappointed...first of all, the staff working was more interested in talking to each other, attitudes were very flippant and their perception of a "medium" and mine were two totally takes....First of all, they were all out of dishes, so they used a cup..., not a problem, the cup was the small flurry cup, it was filled 1/3 full, and when i questioned the girl, all she stated was yes, we ran out of cups and this is a medium...and promptly turned around and began to speak to her friends//co workers..... All the food was very average, nothing special about the breakfast. Service overall was subpar, waitress seemed disinterested and unhelpful. Food and drinks seemed a little overpriced, especially for the quality of what we were given. We arrived at Thee Diner this morning at 8 AM were served coffee and our order was taken. At 8:40 we had still not received our breakfast. The waitress returned and asked us what we had ordered again and she wrote it down again and said it will be right down. We waited five more minutes and still nothing while the table next to us which had ordered at the same time had finished their breakfast. We left and told her to forget it as we had an appointment to be at. She yelled into the cook to forget it so she evidently just put in the order. This is the second time we have had poor service at the diner and will not return or suggest it to our friends and family. This is one of those throw back places that existed before the development of Cicero took off. I think the breakfasts are great, especially the fretta. I have it with some of their homemade Italian bread toasted. Lunch and dinner is good but pretty much on par with places like Stella's and Little Gem. The ice cream stand is where the place really shines. Everything under the sun, cheaper than most places and large servings. A small soft ice cream cone is a meal! read more
