Thien is the man! I've taken all my suits to him, dress shirts, and jeans. He does it all! He may be a little old fashioned (no computer etc), but I think that's what makes him good. I concurred with Dan D.'s review Found Thien through Yelp reviews but unfortunately he's good with simple alterations only. Kept my stuff for over 3-5 months. Kept calling or stopping by to find out when my stuff will get done. Eventually had to take unaltered stuff back. He ruined my Jil Sander dress unintentionally (due to his lack of skills) - it's lopsided down and he said he couldn't fixed it. read more

Thien tailor looks to be a one man show. He's very professional and really nice guy. He listens to what you're asking for and gives a very fair price for the work. I've gotten several jackets altered with the shoulders brought in. When you flip the jacket inside out it's as though you bought it that way. His work is very thorough and the craftsmanship is definitely there. Sometimes when I go on Sat, there could be a few people already there waiting for him. You'll just have to wait your turn or try going there first thing in the morning. Not sure how the weekdays are, but on Saturday, it seems to be busier late afternoon. Yes his place is a mess and yes his store is hard to find in a sketchy place, but I think he takes a lot of pride in his work. At the end of the day, that's what really matters when your getting your clothes altered, I would think. Like other reviewers mentioned, he only takes cash. I decided to try Thien Tailoring based on the ratings and proximity to my house. I took a two pairs of jeans (boot cut to straight leg) and suit slacks (a few snags). It's kind of inconspicuous to find (Hawthorne Blvd. by 147th, below a Property Management sign) and it takes me back to an older place but Thien Tailoring is great. I said no hurry on the alterations and he did a great job on all three. Total cost was $35. I will definitely go back, as my suits need to be taken in. FYI cash or check only. read more

I've been coming to Mr Thien for almost 10 years. Even after moving away to Hawaii, I continue to use his services by saving my alterations and bringing them with me to Thien every 6 months or so and he is very accommodating. I've tried other tailors but he is the best in quality of work, professional manners, and very fair prices. Overall I had a great experience. I had three dress slack shortened and a dress shirt taken in. He created record of all of my measurements. That way I can just drop off an item for alteration and he does not have to re-measure me. Inside the place is not much to look at but thats why the prices are low. One tip is to park in the lot to the north (by the mortgage company). Parking right on Hawthorne is a bit risky. I would recommend this place to anyone who likes good quality for for a low price. read more

Mr. Thien is awesome. I came into his shop three days before a baptism to get a pair of my boyfriend's slacks tailored. It's easy to see that he is a VERY busy man, because there is clothes everywhere (organized) and the small waiting area was never empty. When he got to my boyfriend, he spent a few minutes sizing him up (by eye!) and asking questions about the fit. When he asks when we need the slacks by and I explain the situation, he says he can have them ready by 9am on Saturday, the day of the baptism. He doesn't officially open his shop until 11am on Saturdays......... essentially he was going out of his way to get them done on time. He also promised to call us on Friday if he got them done even sooner, which he totally did! We picked the slacks up and they fit PERFECTLY. And it only cost $12, amazingly inexpensive for the stellar customer service we received. I never had shirts altered before, so wasn't sure what to expect but Mr. Thien did exactly what I asked for. He has a very small shop, but it's always busy. Thien is right on point with his tailoring and alteration work. There is a dressing area to change in, then he will measure and ask you exactly where to hem. You can tell he's been doing this work for a good minute. I brought in some jeans and a wool coat and left with no complaints. He gets all my alteration business from now on. I have done business with Thien Tailoring for over twenty years and have always been more than satisfied with the service and outstanding quality of the work he does. I have used tailors from California to Hong Kong and he is one of the best! Mr. Thien is a perfectionist and wants nothing less than this in the work he does. I came in on a Thursday to have 2 pants hemmed. The place looks kind of run down and really disorganized, but I don't care about that, especially since I only stayed there a for a few minutes. He had them both done by Saturday. It was reasonably priced ($6 each) and the work was good. My only problem is that when he finished with one of the jeans, he folded it so that there was a crease running down the front legs. The jeans are very rigid so those creases are staying there for a while. Jeans with front creases....not a good look. Why couldn't he just fold it the way I originally gave it to him? Why does anyone fold it the way he did anyways? I'll probably come to him again, I'll just make sure to tell him not to fold it that way again. read more

I came here before and he did a really good job, but I stopped by two weeks ago to get two shirts sewed up(very minimal tears). He told me to come back the following week and I did, and when I stopped by he couldn't even find the shirts and told me they weren't ready. He told me he would call me in two days so I can pick it up. No call, so I called him and he tells me they weren't ready still. Wow. So now he tells me to come back tomorrow. This is ridiculous. I understand he's a very busy man but don't tell me they'll be ready at a certain date if they wont be. read more

I have another tailor who I absolutely adore, but it is hard to get to her when I need a last minute alteration since I don't live and work in the same area. Working in Torrance, I decided to find a local tailor that would make picking up a garment on a weekday easy.. So here we go.. Sorry, Thien is a really nice guy and I have no problems with him as a person, but I'm not sure if I would trust him again as a tailor. From the one job he did for me, his lack of skills are apparent and he may have ruined a pair of my suit trousers for my new suit. I requested he take in the waist of said trousers, and he just took a glance at me with them on, and said, "Okay, I know what to do." From experience with my other tailor, who gives you a preview with pins and makes sure to make proper measurements, this gave me a bad feeling. You don't just say that you know what you are doing without measuring things. I asked him repeatedly if he was sure and he just said "Yes, trust me, trust me, over and over again." Really...? Doesn't instill much confidence. But, um.. Okay. Maybe he just has that magical touch that my other tailor doesn't. So I leave my trousers, and come back a couple days later. The waist fits well now and I am happy. Then I take them home. However, upon closer inspection of the garment, I realize that it is incredibly obvious where he has taken them in due to extremely sloppy stitching. In fact, the space between the center-right belt loop and the center of the back of the trousers measures 15mm, while the space between the corresponding numbers on the left side measure 11mm, a 4mm difference! Now, some of you out there may say, "Hey, that's not a big difference; relax man," but no, if I am paying you as a professional tailor, that is a HUGE difference, and I expect better. You can just tell by looking at it. Incredibly sloppy. I will take them back to him to see what he can do, but honestly I am kind of scared to leave them with him now.. After this, I don't think I will go back. Maybe I am an exception.. or maybe he is just not a very good tailor and no one else notices. I have another tailor that I have been to more frequently who has NEVER made a mistake, let alone one as obvious and basic as this. Different people have different skill levels and I honestly wouldn't rate Thien very highly comparatively to my current tailor or any of the other tailors I have had experience with. Sorry to be one of the few negative reviews on here, but I had to tell the truth as defined by my experience with him. I might let him hem a pair of pants or something, but anything more complicated and I would rather just take it somewhere else. read more

I'm not sure what yelpers are rating here, or perhaps he used to be great, but it's hard to believe, given what he did to my stuff: I had two Bebe skirts to take in on the sides, and a pair of pants to lengthen. I had the skirts all marked and hand-basted, and I showed him what to do with the pants. Well, when I went to pick it all up, he had the pants, which have flare legs, lengthened with a straight piece of material, so they looked very funny, and the hem pulled all over the place, being the additional length narrower than the end of the leg (yes, unbelievable!). His excuse, given my disbelief, was: 'you didn't tell me'. The skirts, cute Bebe stretch material, were sewn pulling the sides with a non-biased black net, 1/4" from my marks, and all crooked. The extra material was cut very close to the seam, and the seam was so tight it pulled all over. So, the pants are unwearable, but perhaps I can recover them. The skirts, both part of very nice outfits, are completely ruined, since he didn't leave enough material to make any correction. I wanted to cry, it's so hard for me to find clothes that fit, and I loved these outfits, and Bebe does not have the skirts anymore, so I wasted my money, time, and two entire outfits, So, one star because there is no less, and - fellow nice dressers - do not entrust your nice clothes to Thien. He may be OK to just shorten jeans, but he sure doesn't know how to treat nicer stuff. read more

I'm sorry to leave a bad review but just being objective. Thien is an extremely nice nice man. However, the dress shirt that I had him take in was of low quality and the arms were too tight so my $90 Ralph Lauren shirt now has Express quality stitching and I can't bend my arms in it properly. It was very low priced but I think you get what you pay for here. But, this is my one and only experience and probably my last. I'm sure for more simple jobs, he would be fine but for shirts or pants, I wouldn't bother unless you're ok with cheaper quality for cheaper price. On the other hand, I took my other clothes to George's over in West LA and definitely much higher prices but also much much better quality. So if you just need some cheap jeans hemmed, I may stick to Thien but if you have clothes you definitely want tailored well, I would stick with George's. Not trying to hate on Thien cuz I found him extremely pleasant but just trying to save the next person from ruining an expensive garment. read more
