Do you love a good sausage on your pie? Best pizza experience I've had in a couple years. This, coming from someone who's visited Pig Ate My Pizza, and Mucci's in the Twin Cities -- no shade thrown here to either establishment, just quite comparable execution. It's a ground sausage (made in-house) similar to the texture you remember from your childhood on Totino's party pizza sausage. Great spice level, slight fennel, doesn't overpower other toppings. Adding to the experience, if you're on the run in solo fashion like myself, they offer INEXPENSIVE personal 6" pizzas with three toppings. Spicy Italian sausage, sun dried tomatoes (god bless em for having that option), and mushrooms. A perfect lunch with an IPA or two, and I don't feel gross afterward. We went early on a Sunday afternoon. I was walking with a toddler so I missed a sign that indicated we should sit in the bar. When the server came over I apologized and offered to move and she said, "No, that's okay" and then literally threw menus on our table! We ordered a sausage and pepperoni and also a derailed pizza. They were very good. I like a little more sauce, but overall the food was great. My husband had a short flight sampler of the sour beers and tried one other - Indian Pagan, I believe. He said the all the beer he tried was fantastic. The building itself is fascinating. We thought it was either a creamery or possibly an old bakery. Excellent food, cheap and house-made beer, and live music. When you come in you can choose the dining area or the bar/lounge. The bar area has a view of the stage which often has live music or an open mic night. The board you see upon entering has the daily food specials, and the board behind the bar in the lounge area has the daily beers on tap. The beer was very good; brewed in house, lots of selection, and lots of flavor. The food was much better than one would expect for a bar. I didn't try the highly praised pizza, but the Mediterranean sub was an open-faced sandwich piled high with goodness. The feta and olives made for a nice and salty sandwich. Served with a side of chips and a pickle spear it was a satisfying plate. Dessert includes cheesecake bites which are tiny but inexpensive; the flavors are always different, and since the portion is small it's easy to sample more than one. They post their daily food and brewery specials on their website along with the live music schedule. The staff was very friendly and unpretentious. Night parking on the street is easy and the bar is nested just off the main way in Superior. read more

Sidewalk was covered with ice just upon visiting on a Thanksgiving weekend. The decor wasn't fancy. Overall, the service was excellent. The bartender was polite and speedy. There were many "regulars" here as far as I can tell but that did not deter me from getting good service.The beers were above average, I've had a lot better at other places. I had 3 pints here and also ordered 2 large pizzas to go. I had the Thai special & the Veggis. They were pretty good, just a bit salty but what pizza isn't salty? I would gladly to return here again. Inside is closed. Outside seating-which was really nice. Live music- not our taste. Food took FOREVER. We ordered stuffed mushrooms, we were told they would take longer we thought like 20 minutes. However, 40 minutes after we ordered we finally got them. They were amazing. Would highly recommend if you have hours to kill. We also got a chicken Alfredo pizza. It was well over 50 minutes before we got the pizza. They did take off for our first round. Service was good, once they came to the table. It would of been nice to know that food would take over 30 minutes. We had places to be and things to do. We definitely did not enjoy the music. They only reason they did not get one star is because the food was very good. But having to wait over 30 minutes for food when they have 13 tables is ridiculous. First of all I really enjoyed the Hazy Pagan Sour I got. The server we had was really good also. The only thing was I didn't enjoy the pizza we got. It was a glorified frozen pizza. I think I am giving such a low review because I was really looking forward to going to the Thirst Pagan and left somewhat disappointed. read more

Best pizza place I have been to in awhile. It's a deep dish sort of not as deep as Chicago style but still excellent. The crust to toppings is a perfect ratio and I wouldn't change anything there. FYI I had the hawaiian pizza. I had the seasonal flight which is 9 beers. Pretty much loved each beer there were a couple that were so so. My wife had the other traditional flight and she also liked the majority of her samples. read more

On vacation and Duluth and came across the bridge to support the local brewery scene. Had lunch on Wednesday afternoon and they gladly made me a wrap out of what was normally Mediterranean sub sandwich and it was excellent. My wife had an interesting Ruben roll-up that was very good. Of course tried their beer, started with a Burntwood Black black ale and ended with one of their bourbon barrel blends, #3 to be exact and it too did not disappoint. Went there a few weeks ago with my brothers. The food was very expensive for the quality. The pizza was undercooked both on the bottom and with the cheese. It was very busy in there, but the service was very very slow even so. Also, the personal pan pizza I ordered was not brought with the correct Toppings. read more

Been going here for over 10 years (since way back when it was Twin Ports Brewing). I love what's become of Thirsty Pagan since my initial visit. They have incredible beers -- I highly recommend India Pagan Ale, it's one of the best IPAs I've ever had, and I've had enough IPAs to fill Lake Superior so that's saying something bucko). And their pizza is delicious. Vegetarian options galore. The staff is great, so friendly and down to earth. Their live music is spot-on (I'm biased because I've played their quaint stage a number of times). Go on Wednesdays to see Jim Hall's Little Big Band. Jim is the Duluth area's best kept secret. A transforming folk and blues man who was born to sing you songs while you drink a plethora of TPB beers and gobble down their tasty pizza. If I'm ever within 50 miles of the place, I'm on my way there for a pint and a growler fill. read more

The Pizza here is fantastic, and different from "other"pizza joints. Even more so for their Calzone's, which are the best anywhere. Microbrews are very good. The atmosphere was quite conducive for the perfect pizza and beer date. I decided on the pizza which was top notch and I tried the margarita instead of the beer. The margarita was great and was made from scratch (better than your normal Applebees one). Hanging in the entryway to the Thirsty Pagan, you'll see a news article from the local paper telling the story of how a local man turned a struggling brewery around. The story is about Steve, owner of the Thirsty Pagan, who really does seem to go out of his way to make sure everyone has a good time. The girlfriend and I were sitting back and enjoying a very good Chicago style pizza and tipping back what the woman described as one of the best raspberry beers she ever had and what I'd describe as one of the best Belgium sour beers ("Rounding Third Ale") when Steve noticed I was wearing a Shenanigan T-shirt and struck up a conversation. I explained that the shirt was for a fundraiser for a friend who passed away in San Francisco. He talked about his recent trip to Palo Alto. We mentioned we had just moved from the Bay Area. He talked about being from out West originally and how he wanted to create the kind of brewpub he frequented when he was a student at the University of Oregon. I mentioned I was a Duck as well. He asked us if there was anything we'd change about the food (It is a good pizza, a step up from most chains) and made us promise to try a slice of one of Paddy's homemade pies. On a future visit, we talked to Paddy while she was tending bar in the back and she mentioned how she picked whatever fruit looked freshest and baked pies out of it. During the winter, she leans toward making cheesecakes. The girlfriend swears it is some of the best pie she's ever had. On our way out the door, Steve grabbed us to chat again, giving the girlfriend tips on where to look for jobs in town. In between, he opened the door for everyone walking in the door--greeting most of the people by their first name. Good food. Good beer. Good service. After a "no star" experience with my family around the corner at The Anchor Bar, where "abandon all hope ye who enter here" summed up our attempt at getting a burger , our faith in the industry was single handedly restored by the staff and food at "the Pagan". A genuine "we're happy that you're here" greeting by two members of the staff was followed by quickly served cold beverages and our pizza order placed in about ten minutes, which only took that long because there were so many great pizza options to choose from. We were entertained with live music from an adjacent dining room and never had our beverage glasses go empty while waiting for our pizzas. Our food arrived promptly, fresh and hot from the oven and brimming with toppings and perfectly melted, lightly tanned mozzarella cheese. As first time guests we greatly overestimated how much pizza we would need for our family of five. Two 13" and one 10" left us filled with almost an entire pizza to take home. During our meal a second musical group made their way into the adjacent room and before leaving we were treated to several numbers by The Bitterroot Band, so good that we would have stayed much longer if seating would have allowed. Thirsty Pagan has some of the best pizza in the Twin Ports. It's definitely on the spendy side, but its well worth the premium. It almost has a hipster atmosphere to it. The staff are amazing and the service is top notch. If you want to go with the intention of having a conversation, its not the most quiet restaurant around, especially when there's live music being played. Either way, it adds to the atmosphere of this wonderful restaurant. 5/5 would recommend to all. read more

This was a pleasant surprise. After a day of hiking the great Norf Woodz, I needed some calories. I dropped by around 6pm on a Friday. Busy but not crazy. Got a booth right away. They have a bar area somewhat hidden from view from the main restaurant. Didn't check out the bar. They had some live music going on there that filtered over. It was the non-annoying kind of live music. Not too loud. Not offensively picked genres. Sung with some skill. I checked out their house beer list and found several I was interested in. I tried the India Pagan Ale and the Velo Saison. Both really good. Ordered a 10" pizza. It was a hand tossed type crust and was served in the pan from the oven. That pizza didn't even stand a chance. Gone. Really good crust, sauce and cheese. Could have been a little more meat on it but it was still great. Service was friendly, close street parking and fun atmosphere. I will definitely make this a regular stop when I pass through the area. read more

If you can just enjoy these two things I would give it five stars but throw in the terrible music that apparently needs to be so loud you can't have a conversation with someone two feet away from you makes for a terrible dining experience. The last location you could at least try and find a room on the opposite side of the building so you didn't have a banjo blaring in your ear for 45 minutes.
